Korg microKEY-37 37-key Keyboard Controller Reviews

Class-compliant, Bus-powered 37-key USB Keyboard Controller with Mod Wheel, Pitch Wheel, and Damper Pedal Input

Korg's microKEY2 MIDI controller keyboard embodies elegant simplicity, putting basic functionality over frills to provide you with an excellently playable set of keys wherever you need them. This microKEY2 features 37 keys, putting three octaves in easy reach, while remaining slim enough to fit in tight desktop setups. Dedicated pitch and mod wheels are also handy. Our customers and the keyboardists here at Sweetwater both appreciate the added portability of the second-generation microKEY line, which can now be powered right from your iPad or iPhone, and the addition of a damper pedal input is a nice touch. Top it off with a nice software package including titles from Korg, UVI, AAS, Propellerhead, and Ableton, and you can't go wrong with a microKEY2.

Malfunction with Windows OS

By Sweetwater Customer

I wanted this keyboard for the compact design, but it doesn't work with windows…I hope they update the driver

does the job for me

By Daniel from Flagstaff, AZ
Music Background: Amateur musician playing for an audience of 1 (me). Drums, guitar, noob on piano

I got this to have a keyboard at my computer to figure out chords and to have something while taking my piano lessons. My Windows PC did not recognize it until I got a program that has midi (I found Synthesia and am using the free version). My Mac saw it right away in Garage Band. Works great on both machines. I take piano lessons online that I can't take at my piano, so it's great to have this little keyboard at the computer to follow along. The keys are very small but adequate. For figuring out chords, the 37 keys is plenty even for spread out voicings.

NO NOT BUY THIS KEYBOARD

By Sweetwater Customer

Do not buy this keyboard if you are using windows. It just simply does not work even after hours of troubleshooting. It even caused my computer to slightly act up in strange ways after plugging it in. Seems to work for some, but I know I'm not the only one experiencing these issues. Do not waste your money.

Keys are not great

By AM from Oakland, CA

Some internet reviews suggest that the keybed on the microKEY feels better than others in the same price range. I didn't think so.

Perfect for my needs!

By Cindy from Colorado
Music Background: I write and arrange music for harp, piano, cello, clarinet, flute, mandolin, Native American flute, mandolin and violin, in a wide variety of combinations.

I love this keyboard SO MUCH. I have been using a two-octave one for several years (to quickly input my music into Sibelius). It has been a pain, constantly pressing the "up" and "down" and trying to remember where I was octave-wise. I had been planning to find a three-octave and bought this one on a whim while buying my amp package. So glad I did. It is elegant-looking, the action is a bit higher (and better) than on my little two-octave and the three-octave range is perfect for what I do with it and the space I have too.

For anyone wondering, I plugged it into my "Windows 10" HP desktop, put up Sibelius, it found the keyboard instantaneously and the keyboard works perfectly with it.

Works fine for me!

By Greg

I have been using it for about 5 years now and it works fine on Windows 7 and 10. I don't know what the other reviewer was encountering but I've not had any trouble with it being discovered by the OS. Does exactly what I need it to do.

It has its uses and great at them

By Sal from San Diego, CA

This Midi Controller would fit 2 places, the road and the beat maker.... and be GREAT at them!
This would not be a good fit if you primarily use a controller for piano or electric keys or any other rigorous musical playing that involves needing full size keys for space to play them, and room for speed as well.

The keys themselves are very real, and make pushing out drums, bass lines, layering pads, and even pumping a lead part out a breeze! The keys push down easily which may pose an issue again for musicians who play more rigorous parts but i'd say if you just lay some stuff down you don't need to worry about hitting other keys. If you are a pianist who just needs to demo parts on the road this could be a good fit, but i wouldn't make it a primary controller for a studio unless you want something taking up minimal space and mainly pump out beats for hip hop or electronic music of any sort.

Set up was painless, plugged it into my mac, into logic, and i was playing away in 5 seconds. 3 octaves offer substantial room to play, and the pitch and modulation wheels feel nice. The octave buttons are, well buttons, and it just feel like a solid compact board!

I'd 110% recommend this for anyone who wants a plug and play, good key feeling beat pumping artist who wants a minimal set up that can do the job and do it amazingly well at an amazing price, or as a road controller that is so small to pack away. Definitely get a sustain pedal if you're wondering if you should, cuts work in half and saves headaches.
I'd hesitate to recommend it to pianist's or artists who play rigorous parts that involve speed and space of regular keys but if they just need something to lay ideas down this would be a good minimal set up.

DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS OS

By Cemego

I've had a Microkey 37 since it was first released. It worked under Windows XP BARELY. Had to constantly update or wait for new drivers. Always had to click through messages on install of the Korg USB/MIDI driver that said it was not Windows compliant.

Same issues with Windows 7.

Now with Windows 10, it literally wont work at all. I installed the latest Korg driver that they claim is made for Windows 10. Does not work. Red power light between the octave transposer buttons wont even light. The Korg driver doesn't recognize when the microkey is plugged in or removed. It looks like the ESHelper app that is supposed to scan for this wont run consistently in Windows 10.

KORG HAS NEVER PROVIDED GOOD SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS. IF YOU ARE RUNNING A WINDOWS SYSTEM AND WISH TO CONNECT A KORG PRODUCT, YOU SHOULD PROBABLY NOT CONSIDER BUYING A KORG PRODUCT.

They should be brought up on charges for advertising that their products are Windows compatible. THEY ARE NOT FULLY COMPATIBLE NOR HAVE THEY EVER BEEN.
