Just what I needed

By Jake K. from New Jersey, USA
Music Background: Gigging musician and public school music teacher.

I've dragged a Hammond B-3 and a pair of 122 Leslies up until 10 years ago. I have various clonewheels, but the elusive "battery B-3" wasn't a reality until now. The Kong MicroKey Air 61 has saved my musical bacon in various ways. First, the ease of a Bluetooth connection eliminates a patch cord and allows me some freedom in keyboard placement without any noticeable latency. Next, it weighs next to nothing, so no schlep factor. Finally, the mini keys are vital to me. The years have not been kind regarding arthritis in my hands. On my Hammond an octave stretch is painful, but on this a 10th is easily attainable. I can now play using my traditional fingering without pain. No downsides regarding this purchase.

Great but beware iPad’s and IOS 13

By Chris S. from Southern California
Music Background: Working keyboard player in the 80/90’s .. now retired playing only for enjoyment.

The only compact 61 note Bluetooth keyboard controller out there, and it’s a joy to be able to just grab the lightweight little (slim) guy anytime and pair it with my iPad for laying down chords or riffs that are impossible on iPads virtual synths keyboards. The action is a bit mushy .. but workable. The latency via Bluetooth though not like a wired midi board is very doable .. even for soloing. The only issue is as I write this in late October 2013 it will not pair with iPads running any version of IOS 13. I like this board enough that I refuse to upgrade to IOS 13 until this is either fixed .. or Korg makes a new version that will pair with IOS 13. If your

Great Little Controller

By Bernie A. from Port Charlotte,FL
Music Background: Keyboard entertainer over fifty years

I am a gigging musician and sometimes need a small compact setup for my styles,SMF's, and vocals. I ordered the Korg MicroKEY 61 as it is narrow and thin, and light, fitting nicely in front of my other gear. I was hesitant because of the narrower keys, but have had others in the past that I adapted to.

Surprise, surprise, the action is much better than the others and the midi connection with USB is very stable. I haven't tried the other features yet, but I have found a real keeper.

You could have only dreamed about this 20 years ago.

By Cee J. from Ringwood, NJ
Music Background: Professional Musician/Composer

Imagine if someone told you all you needed to 'perform' was a wireless keyboard - and a smartphone (or tablet) for your sound source - and have it actually sound 'professional' (not 'like a Casio"). Well, that time is here - and this keyboard, particularly the 61-key version, let's you actually sound 'legit', however you might look like an amateur!

Throwing ego out the door, I bought this so I could 'noodle', get this, at work - during my down time - in my office at work (I'm a video editor, btw). For YEARS I was looking for a 'near-full' keyboard that was smaller than my 88-key controller - which was obnoxiously huge - and would be easily able to slip away from my console desk.

The keyboard is, well, Korg.Out of the box, it looks like a melodica on steroids without any blowhole - and the keys play like one. If you got big mitts for hands like me, you may feel ham-handed playing this - especially if you play 'close voicings' that require finger dexterity. Like driving a VW bug after a Lincoln Continental, it is small. Your playing will require you learn 'compact' skills - but...

I warn you... You will LOVE this controller if you use if for actually performing as if it were a piano. Performing wide chords like tenths are effortless - and you will find you can do miraculous voicings - because you can REACH them, whereas on a 'regular' piano keyboard, the width of the keys make it impossible. That said, be sure to regularly play your 'standard-sized' keyboards often after a few sessions with this mini-controller so your fingers (and your brain) can re-adjust for the size difference.

PLEASE NOTE: I am using this with an Android (Google Pixel 3XL) phone - via USB. You need to buy (e-bay) a OTG USB-C cable with a 'USB hub' splitter. One USB goes to the controller - the other goes to the DAC dongle for HI-Q audio output. Android WILL recognize the bluetooth - but if you use older software, like iGrand for Android, you will find most of the software, as of Spring 2019, do not offer support for BluetoothMIDI - yet.

Only issue I'm having is my current sustain pedal used in the 'assignable jack' works with some apps, but does not offer sustain in iGrand.... Hmmm.

Awesome, in So Many Ways!

By BFMAudio G.
Music Background: Singer and piano/keyboard player since 1989, with emphasis on pop, gospel, country, and oldies. Also music arranger, creating accompaniment tracks in Apple GarageBand for iOS

Let"s discuss the mini keys first. These are not a problem for me. I got used to them pretty quickly, but it"s definitely important to remember that this unit does not have full-sized keys. Anyway, I use my iPad and iPhone for just about everything in work and life, including music creation and performance. I purchased this controller for use with the GarageBand app, and I have since also gotten Korg Module with a couple add-ons, Korg iM1, DrumKick, DrumsLive, and Accordion HD. This combination of apps provides me with an extensive library of instrument sounds for use in both live performance and studio situations. The keyboard itself has just what I wanted - 61 keys (in this model), hardware octave shift buttons, damper/sustain pedal support, and extreme portability. MIDI over Bluetooth was the final selling point for me. This is really awesome! Now I can just put two AA batteries in the keyboard and start playing with my iPad wherever I am. Great for impromptu jam sessions, playing in the hotel/airport/coffee shop, and even useful at gigs with your favorite software. Of course some of these situations will mandate plugging your iPad or iPhone/computer etc into a sound system or at least a larger speaker. When I"m at home I just use a Beats Pill Plus with an audio cable to maintain portability and convenience. I highly recommend this keyboard controller, and of course I strongly recommend purchasing it from Sweetwater, as they are an awesome company!

Works as advertised

Couldn't be happier with this keyboard. As my title says, it does everything as claimed and does it well.

Nice little keyboard!

By Sweetwater Customer

The touch if the keys is surprisingly responsive, very easy to control velocity from pp to fff. Lag over bluetooth is barely noticeable. Solid build quality. Nice portable solution for learning new tunes and casual playing.

Key size is only a problem if playing live

By Phill from Columbia MO
Music Background: Music director/music minister/gigging musician

I bought this because I'm a guitarist first and pianist second. Not wanting to drop hundreds of dollars on a real keyboard I decided to set for this. It's great coupled with my iphone's Garageband for synth sound in a live setting or just to record!

That said, be sure to get a sustain pedal! I showed up to play music for a youth retreat and the piano there was very out of tune. When using the microkey in place of a piano my fingers got fumbly due to the smaller size, and without a sustain pedal I was forced to use the "always on" sustain function in GarageBand, creating some really rough dissonance...

All in all, it's a really great price and size for a midi controller, but don't expect it to take the place of your real keys/piano. AND be sure to get the sustain pedal!
