Korg microKEY Air-25 25-key Bluetooth Keyboard Controller Reviews

Class-compliant, Bus-powered 25-key USB/Bluetooth Keyboard Controller with Mod/Pitch Joystick

It just doesn't get more portable than the 25-key Korg microKEY Air MIDI controller keyboard. Grab your laptop or mobile device, pick up your microKEY Air, and you're all set - you don't even need to remember to pack a USB cable! A first among the cool MIDI keyboards we've seen at Sweetwater, this Bluetooth-equipped controller can connect wirelessly to your computer or mobile device, providing you with about 30 hours of low-latency virtual instrument control with just a pair of AA batteries. Sure, you can run it off of USB and even power it from your iPhone or iPad, but you don't have to. There's a cool pitch/mod joystick onboard, as well as a sustain button for holding notes, and the 25-key microKEY Air comes complete with an awesome software package too.

Good, but overpriced!

By Sweetwater Customer

My gripe is that this really does not feel like a $ item - I realized that when I was embarrassed to tell my friend how much this costs. At most, it feels like a $ device, not $. The keys are a bit spongy, it doesn't seem extra durable, and it does not come with a travel case or anything like that, which is odd when it seems like the prime use case for such a thing is travel.

Price aside, I am satisfied with the keyboard. It's a convenient size for continuing to compose and try things out while traveling. As a Mac user, the bluetooth is a tad annoying because it requires downloading a separate app from the app store, but it does work well and the latency for me at least was low enough for it to not be a problem. The LEDs showing the current octave are a nice touch.

Very nice

By Meg

Good, solid quality keyboard. The keyboard is a little light to the touch for my taste, but more importantly I needed lightweight and it's going to travel well. Buttons extending the range are a little kludgy to use, but the extension is something I needed more than I realized.

It was a challenge to set it up - but documentation is sparse on the ground. Bluetooth connectivity is something I really wanted and I found in the end it was essential because this cable doesn't work with my iMacPro (Apple's fault).

I'm using it as a composer, so I can't speak to how well it would work for a keyboardist

Korg microKEY Air-25 = Awesome!

By Sean from Louisville, CO
Music Background: 20+ Year Producer

I've had this for just a short while and have used it a few times. There is a latency when using bluetooth but connected via usb there is no latency. Good build and small enough to travel with (the whole reason I bought it). Highly recommended!

Bluetooth makes this insanely great!

By Mark A. from South Orange, NJ

I have both the 61-key and the 25-key versions of this controller, and I think Korg have done a very fine job. The feel of the keybed is, of course, a very subjective issue, but I find it to be at least as good or better than other mini-key controllers. Superior certainly to the iRig Keys or Xkey, which I also have. It is important to know that the 25-key version is slightly different from the other three in that it has no sustain pedal jack (why not?) and instead has a sustain button as well as an arpeggiator button, if you're into that kind of thing. Importantly, it also has the Korg joystick (which is also clickable), while the other three sizes have pitch and modulation wheels. Lots of setup parameters can be set using an editor that Korg provides, but this controller is quite intuitive out of the box.

Bluetooth connectivity is VERY cool and liberating; it's so fun to be able to go anywhere on a stage or in my classroom and play this controller. A minor grievance is that a few steps have to be taken to set up the connection every time you use this (or any BT) controller. You can't just turn it on and start playing whatever app you have launched. Not a big deal, but if you're in the third band of the night and the schedule is slipping, or if you suddenly have an idea and want to get your gear out and lay it down asap, any extra steps are annoying. Latency is very low, though it does get slightly longer as the controller gets farther from the device it's controlling. You would only notice this on a sound with a very fast attack, but some people are quite sensitive to latency, so it's something to be aware of. Overall, this is an excellent product in any size, it's a ton of fun to use, and I highly recommend it.

Great for a tight workspace

By Casey from NYC

I had a previous generation microkey and bought this one to fit into my workstation at my new job where space is at a premium. This 2 key controller is shorter than a standard computer keyboard and just a shade longer than my macbook pro, so it's great for the space. Bluetooth option is awesome for computers with limited ports, and the bluetooth does work surprisingly well for the most part, however sometimes after a while the connection gets buggy and some latency glitch causes midi in Pro Tools to be recorded EARLY - in this case it's simply necessary to turn the keyboard off and then re-connect it, that seems to fix all issues. hoping this may get cleared up in future. This doesn't happen when using the controller's usb connection. Download Korg's Bluetooth Midi Connect and KONTROL Editor software for increased ease in connecting and customization of controls, respectively. All in all though feature packed and a nice addition to my workflow.
