Great mic

By Timothy V. from Lancaster, PA

I replaced an sm57 with this and I am impressed. Much better isolation capabilities and a wider range of tones captured at the guitar amp's sweet spot. I get more volume out of this mic as well, so I can track at lower volumes.

Solid Performance Mic

By Peter M. from WILLIAMSTON, SC
Music Background: Pianist, Live Streaming, Sound Mixer, Studio GA, Live Sound Engineer,

Use case:
Fender Rhodes 73 Stage Piano Mark I
Fender Frontman 65 Reverb

Set with presence boost in my setting. This helps cut through the mix with my synthesizers. I have to tame everything in post but it has a nice smooth response. I do like having the eq options on the mic. That was why I selected this mic for it's versatility over the e609. I've had this mic a couple of months to test out. Great price point, versatile and easy to use.

Yeah, it's that good

By Sweetwater Customer

I use the e906 with the Sennheiser MD421 when micing guitar cabinets. I replace the SM57 with the e906 and am very pleased with the result in sound capture. No mistake the sm57 and the e906 are very similar in make up but the 906 does a better job at it in my experience. Supercardioid, three position switch go a long way to outperform the SM57. As always do the research, I am sure you'll see the difference.

I don't have a lot of experience using microphones with amps but this works great. I detect no loss in the quality of sound when using during performances. Great results for a great price.

Great mic for guitar and snare

By Christopher L. from Sparta Township, NJ
Music Background: Hobby musician and studio engineer playing gigs once a month

I've been using this mic on my '68 DRRI all year and it has been fantastic for live gigs and home recording. I really like the way it captures my tone fully and being able to just hang it over the front saves me time and the clutter of another stand. I recently tried it out on my snare and I will be picking another one to replace the sm57 I've been using there. Though the sounds were pretty close, the e906 sounds a little fuller and a little closer to the natural snare sound than the sm57.

Great Mic for Guitar Amp

By Sweetwater Customer from Virginia, USA

I bought this mic for near proximity capture of guitar playing through effects chain into tube amp and was not disappointed. Captures output of amp with amazing clarity and mic signal sounds considerably better than the ambient sound in recording room. A great solution for recording guitar tracks for multi-tracking original works, improvisational takes with Tascam and overlaying with video for youtube or social media. Accomplished exactly what I needed for professional sound quality at a reasonable price point.
Also, I bought the Gator Frameworks GFW-MIC-2621 Tripod Style Bass Drum and Amp Mic Stand that comes with the package deal on Sweetwater and was very pleased with this mic stand. It is nicely weighted, very stable and highly adjustable to get the right mic height and angle. With this combo, you have a solid solution to mic amp and don't need to worry about any problems.
Additional note: With this combo, you will need to remove the threaded brass screw inside the mic clip to mount the mic onto the mic stand in order to get the threading diameter to match up.

Sennheiser e906's

By Gordy B. from Northern California
Music Background: pro musician many years

These mics are the best I have ever used on my guitar rig! Really ease to use. I just plugged them into the board with no eq and they sounded wonderful! Nice tight low end and smooth highs with no harshness. They are super light-weight so no worries about hanging them on the cable through the amp handle. No more mic stands! I run a stereo rig so the lack of mic stands is a wonderful side benefit. Very reasonably priced and far better than what I have used for years. I highly recommend them.

THE mic for guitar cabs

By Brent B. from Plano, TX
Music Background: Synth, Guitar, Piano. Music Production and Scoring

I was a sm57 loyalist for basically my entire guitar career when mic'ing up a speaker cab. Due to a pet related incident I had to replace my sm57 fairly quickly. David W. my sales engineer, highly recommended this e906 as a replacement and per his recommendation I picked one up.

The mic arrived very quickly and after getting it set up (which is super easy), my first impression of its performance was that it is an AMAZING instrument microphone. It has a nice tight super cardioid shape that does really well when right up on the cab. The big thing that I really like about it is how true and unadulterated the sound it picks up is. The sm57 is a great mic, and obviously has been used successfully for years, but it certainly shapes the tone a bit, which is often a good thing. The e906 captures what is coming out of the cab very faithfully and in a era when a lot of post processing is done in the box, having stuff that is flat EQ is a benefit. I can 100% see using the e906 as my "go to" microphone for guitar cabs and other instruments. Almost essential to my arsenal at this point.

Another Alternative to the SM57

By Anthony P. from New York
Music Background: Studio engineer for over 25 years.

Like its little brother the e609, the mic is light weight and compact. Easily draped over a cabinet in lieu of a lic stand with great results. The sound is more full bodied than the e609 and SM57. The filter switch is for the top end of this mic and allows you to shave some of that top end hype off in the 4k range (perfect for electric guitar). Check out s comparison between this mic, the e609 and the SM57 in the video linked. Only reason I didnt 5 star this mic is the price. For $200 i felt the mic wasnt twice as good as the e609.

Versatile!

By Josh

This mic sounds great! my favorite part about the e906 is that it's side address. Being able to hang this from the top of a guitar amp by looping the cable through the top handle allows for more stage space by eliminating a mic stand. This may seem like a small detail but it makes a big difference of small stages.

The E 609 Upgrade

By Tucker from Houston, TX
Music Background: Musical Entertainment

Having used the 609 for years this is a slight upgrade. It's nice to be able to push the guitar out front or pull it from the FOH mix with just a flick of a switch. Do yourself a favor and also purchase a cab grabber to hold the mic as the XLR connection can become loose by hanging it gig after gig.

One power chord and I needed to change my pants.

By Sweetwater Customer

I was just hoping to get the tone I had set up on my rig, but it chewed that tone up and spat out gold.

As a disclaimer, this is my first time buying an amp mic as I usually DI my katana for recording, but I wanted a mic for live. The first mic I bought was the e609 (this one's cheaper counterpart) and it gave me all low end and barely any mids or highs. So I took that back and bought this and it still has plenty of low end but also gives me the bite of the mids and highs. I play modern post-hardcore and heavy metal guitar, and I think this ruined DI recording for me, it added depth and bite to my tone that I was VERY pleasantly surprised by.

Problem solved!

By Jeb T. from Indiana
Music Background: Drummer, jr. High band to bars, clubs even churches.

Growing up a drummer, I've always had friends old and new, come over to play and always the same problem: practice amp or combo cabs. The problem is neither of us are going to hear it. You're gonna have to build some sort of rig, and there's a million simple ways to go about it. In most situations you're gonna need a mic. The Sennheiser e906 is incredible! That combo amp will sound as big as your house if you want, and the mic is the key! The 906e picks up every detail.

Nice Mic

By Len

This is a nice alternative to the industry standard SM-57. This has a little flatter frequency response compared to a 57. I like how it can hang from the cab front if required, and the front is clearly labeled.

Exactly what I wanted

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Gigging guitar player

I was unhappy with the line-out sound of my Boss Katana for in-ear monitors. Wanted to hear the amp. As soon as I got the e906 and ran it through the iems I could really hear the amp. Hung it right through the handle, half way between the come and the edge is the speaker.

Incredibly impressed!

By Jeffrey H. from ROCHESTER, MI

Hooked this up as soon as I got it, found the sweet spot on a Vox AC15, and I was ready to record. This mic sounds great with minimal eq and tweaking. The low profile, flat-against-grill setup is excellent for leaving out without the unsightliness of a boom stand and mic sticking out 6 inches from your grill. I have the E609, but I found I didn't really care for that mic for recording. This is a great upgrade.

Perfect for micing guitar cabs

By Amy from Coral Springs, FL
Music Background: Long-Time Rocker

I really like these. I own 2. They pickup guitar frequencies nicely. I especially like that they're easy to hang from the top of an amp. I just wrap the mic cable through the cabinet's or amp head's handle and let them hang flat against the speaker grill. Saves me from having to bring mic stands to mic up the 2 guitarists. No mic stands means more room on small stages for the guitarists.

By gary c. from rochester, NY

What's to say? Just find your cabs sweet spot and hang. It's that easy. This mic does not color your sound, you get what your cab/speaker really sounds like when recording or playing live. I have Shure,Audio Technica, Blue, Sennheiser and others you can't go wrong with the e906, this is a Great mic!!

Great Mic For Guitar, Snare, Toms, Even Bass Guitar Cabs/Bass Drums

By Lester H. from Memphis, TN

Soundwise, sort of like an SM57 but you can hang it over your amp! How cool is that? However, hanging this mic on a drum head does not work very well unless you are VERY punk, avant-garde, experimental and like explosive rattling noises that make no sense. Could be awesome though WHO KNOWS

This mic is a real workhorse that I have used for virtually every instrument including bass instruments. Used on and in bass drum it gives that old school Van Halen type sound (that they used SM56/SM57s for). For quick and dirty rehearsal or live recordings you just can't beat it. No mic stands needed for amps!

Naturally, for more critical recording purposes, you will want to attach it to a stand and then find the correct placement on the speaker or drum to suit your taste, as you would with any mic.

Sennheiser e906-More than just cabs!

By Alejandro C. from NYC
Music Background: Guitarist, electric bassist and tech geek.

So I got two of these mics, not for guitar but for Latin percussion. I've used them live and to record bongos and tumbadoras (congas). Of course they work great on guitar cabs/combo amps but they do way more than that! I've also been messing around with them as close mics on upright piano and vibraphone. On bass I've tried them on a PJB 4x5 and they did the job. I think this mic would probably be fine on a 1x10 or 2x10 if paired with an additional condenser for more focused low-end.

Great mic for guitar cabs

By JG

When I got this I tried it on a few on my cabinets. I used it in a mic stand and hung from the cab both work great. The Mic gave me a really good representation of my sound. This is a great add to my other mics I use for micing guitar cabs. I am very pleased with the Sennheiser e 906.

June 24, 2021

Very, very pleased.

By Robert F.
Music Background: Pushing 30 years performing and recording very outre music for weird people

I use it generally on the standard middle setting - I can adjust the amp tone/guitar settings if I want something different usually, but could see it being useful for a live situation or with two guitarists using similar amps/mics.

It also is VERY useful because it doesn't require a mic stand, which if you're limited in the amount of stuff you want to carry is a godsend. Loop the XLR cable around the combo or head handle, adjust to taste, hang mic, profit!

Normally I am not a big fan of the dynamic mic on guitar standard. I use ribbons and condensers typically and don't even own a SM57 any more, but have fond memories of the 906 being the only dynamic one I ever really liked when it was used at a few sessions and gigs in the past.

I decided to bring it, a Zoom R8, a single Les Paul (one of the much-derided 2016 High Performance model with the oddball features that I love every single one on!), and a Boss Katana for a remote recording rig in the Mojave recently for a week. The entire session other than the guitar itself were Sweetwater purchases, for the record!

I can report back that the entire time I did not feel a lack of anything and the finished product made me very, very pleased. Fat, thick tones, and feedback was pleasing rather than shrill when I went there - cleans were round and full.

An absolute bargain for what it is.

Great, unique guitar cab mic, with lots of character and midrange quality

By Mark L. from Chicago
Music Background: Guitar, bass, synthesizer, programming, recording, mixing

I'll start by saying I am a huge fan of Sennheiser products, and I have built a nice collection of mics of many different brands over the years. I tend to spend a lot of time recording guitar and very critically listening to the character and tone of each mic. I've actually used the e906 for years, and I wanted to give this mic the fair review it deserves.

Packaging: Very high quality, with the Sennheiser seal of approval.

Build: I love the beautiful metallic indigo and black stylings, as well as the refreshing side-address design. I find positioning the mic extremely easy, and that it takes up a very small footprint whether on a small desk stand in front of my amp or draped over. Super-cardioid pickup pattern is awesome for isolation. A+ for design.

Features: 3-way presence switch. I find this term a little misleading, it's more of a high-mids bell-shaped flat/boost/cut, and really doesn't affect the presence.

Sound: Technically speaking, there is a low cut filter starting at 300Hz and cutting down to -5dB at 100Hz, so the lows are fairly attenuated. There is an extreme high-cut filter at 12kHz, so there is not a lot of presence. Additionally the three-way switch adjusts the 4kHz bell curve by cutting or boosting it slightly. In flat mode, there is still a boost of about 5dB. As far as the voicing of this mic, I'd say it sounds warm and mid-range focused. It's definitely not scooped sounding like many dynamic instrument mics in this category, quite the opposite really. It has a sophisticated and unique sound, but because of the low cut and presence dropoff, it sounds very midrangey. I would not say it sounds completely accurate to the source either. As far as the dynamics, I'd say they are typical for a dynamic mic. The transients compress audibly like all dynamic mics do, but they don't compare to the naturalness you would get from a good ribbon mic.

Overall: To be perfectly honest, I've always found myself wanting to like this mic more than I actually like it. Don't get me wrong, I think it has a unique, warm and pleasant sound. The low-mids, mids and highs all sound smooth and accurate. If you are recording a source where you don't want a lot of lows, or want a slightly warm/dark character, this is it. I think there are plenty of people out there that would appreciate the midrange focus of this mic on their guitar cab, depending on their style. However, I find myself wanting more in the lows, and the lack of frequencies above 12kHz is concerning. To be fair, this just isn't a "desert island" kind of mic, which is perfectly fine. I would only recommend this mic as an auxiliary choice for miking guitar amps, or if you want a mic with a lot of character that deviates from the industry standard, especially given it's price point. For some, it will be the perfect choice. But if you want an accurate mic that sounds like your cabinet, this is not it. I will absolutely still keep and use it, as another tool in my mic locker.

4/5 stars. It's a solid and beautiful mic overall, but it's not really natural sounding. Don't expect it sound exactly like your cabinet. The midrange character will be offputting to some, attractive to others. It's best served as an auxiliary guitar cab mic, but if you want a "safe" option, maybe look at some of the other mics in this category offered by other manufacturers. The mic's unique character can certainly have advantages, especially in a bass-heavy mix, or a mic where you need something to fill the midrange.

Sennheiser e906 -- Love It!

By Paul B. from Baltimore
Music Background: Guitarist for a half century

A necessary disclaimer: I am an entirely untrained amateur, doing my own home recordings of my own compositions/arrangements for guitars. The e906 is the most recent addition to my mic locker, and I chose this model based on other reviews and recommendations I had read. I wanted an additional option for mic'ing amp cabs. The features of this model seem useful to me, and equip this microphone for a variety of situations/applications. So far, I am very pleased with the e906. It is lightweight but solidly built, easy to understand and use. Although these Sennheiser models are often used simply draped over the top of an amp cab, I prefer to use the e906 with a mic stand in order to position it more precisely. The results I have obtained with the e906 so far are pleasing to my ears: good clarity and fidelity, undistorted/undistorting compression, excellent reception. As always, my customer rep at Sweetwater was very helpful in trustworthy advice about this mic and with the arrangements for sale and shipping. I have been a Sweetwater customer for many years, and have never once had a disappointing experience.

Stellar Microphone for Guitar Amps

By John P. from Ave Maria, FL

I've been using this mic for about a year now, and it's been a game-changer for me. It's easy to set up, the presence filtering is amazing useful, and it lays flat on a cab! Seriously, spend the money and buy this microphone. It's going to make your life easier when it comes to capturing guitar tones for live or studio applications. I work with guitarists who tend to use overdrive more than clean tones, so having the presence boosted is a must for maintaining clarity. Definitely a must-have for any mic locker, or if you've got limited space for your amps and don't want to compromise your sound by using a mic in a way other than it was intended to be used.

This is THE Mic for guitar cabs. I have an SM57 and an MD 421 and spent hours and hours trying to find the "sweet spot" and angles and so on.
I used one of these e906 and was blown away at how good my guitar sounded. I asked the sound guy what he was doing with my mix in the monitors and he said it was just raw.
I sold my md 421 and bought one of these. It takes the guess work and stress out of micing my guitar amp.
It seriously sounds so good!

An incredible investment!

By John P. from Ave Maria, FL
Music Background: Live Sound

Picked up this mic a couple weeks ago on a bit of a whim. Immediately stuck it in front of a Marshall DSL20C during a theater production that very week, with incredible results! It sounded spectacular and immense. The bass response on this little mic is impressive. It picked up all the low-end grunt and growl that little amp could muster (which is a lot if you're not familiar with it) and translated it to my line array with amazing clarity. Presence switch was up for the aggressive tones I was getting from the guitarist. Used it again the following weekend on a Hot Rod Deluxe IV on some country music, again with the presence switch up, and it works phenomenally well on that too. As before, clarity was the name of the game, and yet it still sounds rich and full. Seriously, this mic is hard to beat. The flat form factor is unbeatable for small spaces where another mic might get knocked out of place, and the sound is unmistakably pure, clear, and rich. Be cautious with the gain knob, though! This is a hot little number.

Luv it!

By Larry K. from Elgin IL
Music Background: Studio owner

I'm not sure I have anything more fancy to say than what's been said already. I guess I'm sorry for not having bought one of these earlier. I did some recording with it and was instantly impressed. I'm considering buying another. It's small and light. The roll-off feature is welcome.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars: the mic clip is like a death grip lol. There is no way this mic is falling out of the clip. Which is obviously a good thing. But when I first received the mic, I thought they had sent the wrong clip. It seemed too small. I had to press-fit the clip onto the mic. I would leave the clip permanently attached.

I don't know that there's anything this mic wouldn't be a good fit for. If it works for a 57, then it's probably a good bet the 906 will work fine too. The form factor might not be right for everything (maybe some tough drum mic positioning). Is it worth spending almost twice what you'd expect to pay for a 57? I think yes. The 57 is heavier and sometimes harder to position. Is it as robust a mic as the 57? That I don't know. Time will tell. Anyway, there are a few excellent YouTube comparison videos. If you're not quite sure, I would check them out.

Music Background: 40+ years of sound engineering

We were looking for an under $200 mike to improve the sound for our sax player. Tried this out last night and everyone was blown away. The high contour switch makes this very versatile and can take the bite out of brass allowing them to sit better in the mix while still being fully present in the lower range. Yes, I know sax is not brass but the comment applies. Good stuff. The biggest mistake Sennheiser made was making this "look like" some of their cheaper mikes. It's a whole different animal.

E906 made a world of difference in the studio

By Michael D. from Ri
Music Background: Been playing for 30+ years. Rock, jazz, country, funk etc.

Used the 906 to mic my Masa Boogie Mark IV in the studio. Incredible difference in sound quality compared to other mics we used. Now I have to go back a rerecord all my guitar parts! Great mic.

Nice Mike

By Rick C. from USA
Music Background: Recording/Musician

This is a good little mike. I like the sound more than what the Shure 57 provides for electric guitar. It seems to have a flatter and more accurate tone curve, but less bottom than the 57. Placement is important.

Sure, it's awesome for guitar amps, but has also turned out to be quite handy as a general purpose mic.

Iconic Guitar Amp Microphone

By Lawrence from Canada
Music Background: Guitar

This is one of the best microphone purchases I've made. It replaced the SM57 I used to use at gigs. I bought it because of the side address design that allows me to simply hang it by the cord instead of using a mic stand. However, once I started using it, it soon became my favourite for recording, and I prefer it to ribbon and condenser mics. I did many comparison tests and the 906 came out the winner every time (though I'm still determined to use my ribbon mics more).

For recording, I place it about an inch or so from the grill cloth a bit off centre. For live, it touches the grill cloth, suspended by the cable and is close to the edge of the speaker. You might want to experiment with the presence switch to match different speakers or instruments.

It is similar to a Shure SM57, but I find the presence hump not quite so pronounced, and the frequency range extends a bit lower and higher, as well. The difference isn't drastic, so if you have a 57, don't buy this expecting a totally different sound.

I know I should write something negative as no product is perfect, but so far I haven't found anything not to like. I have only used it for guitar amps and have no experience with anything else. I've had it at least two years (since January, 2015) and use it every weekend.

Worth every penny.

By Tim W. from MA

The Sennheiser e906 breathed new life into my recordings. I had been using a Shure sm57 and always struggled trying to get the right sound. I tried all different mic positions and it was never quite right. With the e906, you just throw it right in the center of any speaker and you're instantly given an amazing full bodied tone! My only regret is not getting it sooner!

This mic is better than anything I've used to try and capture accurate guitar amp sounds. Simple, straightforward, lightweight, solid construction, focused pickup pattern.

IMPRESSIVELY ACCURATE

By Loyal, r. from PA
Music Background: Decades playing live & recording - pro venues & studios. Less active lately.

There are a lot of great mics and a lot of people get great recorded sounds with them. There are a lot of great videos on youtube demonstrating great gear including mics. One video caught my attention because it was a guitarist with a very similar rig to mine and the sound that he recorded was actually the sound that I hear from my gear. In reading the comments, it turned out that he was using a Sennheiser e906. As a guitarist, I have put a lot of time into research and trial and error to get the sound that inspires me to play, write and record as most of us do and the natural progression from that is that I want to hear that sound in the playback after recording, so with all of that said, I didn't have any choice here. I had to buy and try this mic. I just connected the cable, put it in front of the speaker of my cab, recorded, played it back and WOW! That's my sound in the playback! I have not messed around with moving the mic up, down or over an inch or two and maybe it will be even better, but I am impressed with my quick experiment today. I have used a SM57, a SM7B, Cascade ribbon mic, a Rode NT1000 and a very inexpensive MCA SP-1 in various combinations with good results and I will probably still leave some of them up on the other speakers for mix enhancement purposes, but it definitely looks like my dominant guitar cab mic will be the e906 from today on. If I were only going to use one out of these mics that I have, it would be the e906.
It is not warmly accurate like a ribbon. It captures a growling distorted sound like the awesome SM57, but it sounds more broad and quick experimentation says that it finds its spot in the mix very easily.
It is very accurate in giving what it gets. I have used the NT1000 alone with great results too, but the e906 is really impressive at delivering the sound that leaves the speaker.

More Than You Might Think...

By Moose
Music Background: Musician/Songwriter/Engineer

I have some rare Sennheiser MD-409s in my locker that I record guitar cabs with - but they don't hit the stage. The e906 mics are the closest I've ever found and one of the best for live or recording. Don't mistake them for an e609 with a switch... they are not the same at all. Recently, while recording our drum kit - unhappy with the expensive recommended mics I had on our toms - I tried these instead. Pure magic. Now when recording, I always include these in the line up for best candidates. The ONLY thing I still use an SM57 on is the top snare drum mic.

Versatile Budget Friendly Mic

By Andres R. from Denver, CO
Music Background: Mix Engineer, Producer

It may seem odd, but I primarily have been using this microphone on my snare drum and have been getting incredible results. I am used to miking snares from the top, but the snappiness and crispness that you get from using the e906 on the bottom of the snare is incredible. I have also used this microphone for a long while at a jazz club in Georgetown, Washington DC and the ability to just drape it over a guitar cabinet and capture extremely clean to slightly crunchy guitar tones wonderfully.

It's very hard to go wrong when you add a Sennheiser e906 to your microphone arsenal.

My New Favorite!

By Scott S. from Spring Arbor, MI
Music Background: Mr. Muckabout

I've been using an SM7b to record my amp, as I thought it sounded much better than the standard SM57. The e906 easily surpasses both with a nice, warm, natural sound with no harsh high end. Hits on all six for me!

Great Mic - Great tone and easy to use

By John K. from Leesburg, VA
Music Background: Guitarist, Electrical Engineer (digital signal processing research and communications)

I have to say, this mic really impresses me. After many years of using the Shure SM57 for mic'ing-up my various guitar amp cabinets, I really love the clear tone this mic provides. I especially love that it isolates just the amp and seems nearly impossible to feedback. I play in live Worship settings and this mic paid its way the first time I used it. I also have to say how wonderful it is to not be bumping/kicking the mic stand that the 57 needs and thus accidentally changing the spacing (and tone). The 906 lays right on the grill and doesn't move - finally a great sounding mic made exactly how I need it to work. As for recording this mic is lively and warm to the subtle creamy tones and yet has great dynamic range when I go straight into pushing the amp deep into its tonal colors. This mic is now my go to mic in my music-art bag. Oh, I almost forgot, this mic has swichable filter settings to boost or pad the high end, and that is handy. I mostly use it when recording to pull out harsh bright tones all while keeping the room-tone where I want. Live settings may be similar if you use stage sound for monitoring or as part of the front of house (I mostly use IEM's so that is not as big a deal to me live).

Sennheiser e906

By Rick from United States
Music Background: Pro Musician

I haven't used a mic in a while, always go thru a i line 6 product then pod farm, and could never capture my true sound of my Voodoo modded Madison Divinity 2 amp which sounds amazing.

When using the Sennheiser e906 and playing it back its spot on.
I finally have my sound that i worked so hard to get and not just some computer generated amp sound thats only sounds close but can never nail my true live sound.

Now i use both, My amp thru The Sennheiser e906 clean on one track and layer and pan the Pod farm sound on an other track. and the guitar really stands out in the mix.

I'll have to start taking it with me and use it for shows.

Two thumbs up on this reasonably priced mic.

The Only sm57 Alternative On Cabs

By Steven J. from Washingotnville, NY USA
Music Background: Recording Engineer

This mic sounds superb, right up against your guitar speaker grille. It is the only mic I have ever preferred to an sm57 on certain electric guitar sources. The sound is a great, full-frequency representation of what the amp actually sounds like, without much hype. Its three EQ settings also give it the high end necessary for a tom mic, and the low-end natural tone you want from a second mic on a guitar cab.

Best guitar amp mic

By Kirk from Sacramento, CA

This dynamic mic is the best mic on the market for electric guitar amps. Don't let it's compact size lead you to believe it doesn't pick up a wide range of full-bodies frequencies. Highly recommend this mic for studio or live use.

Sounds Great

By Joe T. from Fort Wayne, In.
Music Background: Musician/audio engineer

I love this mic, it sounds great in live and studio applications, the frequency settings give me great sounding options for pairing with other mics in the studio (usually just an sm57) to deliver great sounding results. Sure there's a better sounding mic for your guitar amp out there, but with this one you'll get great sound and still have money for other gear. Thanks to my engineer, Jorge ext. 1341 for another great recommendation for my mic arsenal.

Sounds Perfect e906!!!

By Michael M. from Orland Park, IL
Music Background: Recording & Mixing Engineer

As a Sound Enginner I have to say this product is well built and with the low and high cut switches this mic is an all around microphone; great for Toms, Overheading, and Cabs it will blow you away. Light weight, and easy to work with clean sound and is well used for high and loud situations. If you are using it for a live situation instead of a recording situation use it for cabs and toms.

You can't bet the price on what you are getting here. Would I recommend this to a friend you bet I would. You won't be disappointed with the sound quality.

One of my favorites

By Sweetwater Customer from Newburgh, NY
Music Background: FOH/MON engineer and TM.

This is one of those, "no one gives it the street cred it deserves" kin of Mics. Most people buy the e609 and say I don't need the eq switch for an extra $80, but this mic is so much more. The body and fullness that this mic produces by comparison of the 609 is unreal. The 609 is thin, brittle, overly bright. The 906 with the eq switch flat is full, round, and can still cut a dense mix. I've used this mic with almost every band I've mixes since I bought my first one 3 years ago.

Excellent guitar cab mic, even better on crowded stages

By Ned from South Bay, CA
Music Background: Home Recording, Band Guy, Sound Geek

Wow. What. A. Mic!!
Had previously been using 57's or an e609. The e906 is a marked improvement over either mic and the 3 position switch lets you tailor the sound exactly. It's worth the extra $$.

On crowded stages, you don't want to be tripping over mic stands. Plus, if you're tipping your amp back (you know you should be as your ankles don't hear so well) things like a Z-bar don't work as well. The e906 just hangs from the mic cord - a quick loop through the handle is all it takes and you're done. One less stand to worry about!

Sounds great on a Princeton Reverb, Dr. Z 1x12, or a Fender Bandmaster 2x12 cab. Liked one so much I bought a 2nd one for our other guitarist.

A great guitar cab mic

By Tom from Philadelphia, PA
Music Background: Guitarist, Semi-Pro Live Sound Engineer

I've used many other mics such as SM57's, even CE1000 condensers. This is the first mic I've used that sounded good without EQ'ing. I simply faced the mic dead center over the speaker dust cap and it sounded remarkably close to the sound you hear acoustically listening to the speaker. But, with the added benefit of built-in EQ padding it's fairly versatile out of the box. I'm going to get a few more and try them on drums.

Guitarist's Dream

By D.J. from Monterey, TN USA
Music Background: Live Sound Engineer, Recording Engineer, Vocalist

I have to give full disclosure here first, in that I am a huge Sennheiser fan and user, and have already written a couple of reviews on two of their vocal mics that I use regularly. That being said, I have to let anyone reading this know that as a mic for a live guitar cabinet, you simply cannot go wrong with this mic. It picks up everything that comes out of your cab's speaker cone with perfect accuracy, and does not muddy up or lose any of the frequencies, whether you are playing a screamingly high lead guitar in an 80's "Hair Band", or getting down and dirty with a 7-string while covering some Godsmack or Metallica. When I first brought this mic to a practice session a while back and used it to run my lead guitarist through our practice PA, he actually made the comment that he liked his sound coming out of the PA speakers (product of this mic) better than he liked the actual sound coming out of his cabinet! As a sound engineer, however, I found one of its greatest attributes to be the fact that it NEVER feeds back. As a band that plays more small-stage joints than arenas (like most of the readers, I assume), we constantly find ourselves on "stages" that may be 10-15 feet wide where the monitors can be as close as 10 feet away from the guitar cabinet mic. This creates an intensely challenging feedback scenario where nearly every other mic I have tried has failed without significant EQing (by that I mean degrading) of the monitor mix (I'm talking to you, SM 57!). This mic takes it without so much as a flinch, as its flat-face design allows it to be placed directly on the face of the cabinet where other sounds and frequencies find it difficult to make their way to the mic's element.
As a closing thought, I will add that I normally opt for something a little more "elaborate" for studio guitar cabinet micing like an Audio Technica AT250DE, as that mic basically gives me two mics at the same time. But the AT takes up a little more real estate, which can be hard to come by on certain stages (as I mentioned before). This mic can simply hang over your cabinet without a stand if need be, which is super convenient in the live arena, and it costs just a little over half what the AT costs! The added flexibility of the AT (dual element) is the only reason I give the Sennheiser 4.5 stars instead of 5. As both a live sound and recording engineer, I can truly attest to the differences in each environment, and in the live environment the Sennheiser 906 will simply blow you away for all the reasons I have given. If you are still debating, I'm telling you to buy this mic. For its price, there is simply no way you will be disappointed.

Fantastic sounding mic!!

By Rich G. from Alpharetta, GA

The extra frequency response over the E609 is well worth the extra money. This has a clear, full sound that sounds great on guitar amps. I've also combined it with an MD421 to mic a bass cabinet. Great big bass!!!

I'll be buying a few more very soon!!!
