Great Bass drum mic at a good price

By Sweetwater Customer

I listened to a few drum mic comparisons for Bass drums and each time the e 902 stuck out to me as having the sound I wanted. I love that it's dynamic so you just plug in and start recording, it adds a lot of impact and body to my recordings. Fully recommend getting this if you're looking for a solid kick drum mic without breaking the bank.

Awesome kick mic!

By Mike Y. from Santa Rosa, CA
Music Background: Professional drummer, songwriter, home studio engineer

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with how much I love this bass drum mic. I was tempted to go with some of the "industry standards" for kick mics, but I was recommended the e902 by Chris at Sweetwater. I also viewed over 20 mic reviews/shootouts on YouTube and Sweetwater videos, and the e902 has overall the best representation/reproduction of a bass drum that I found.

Great low end, punch, warmth, fullness, with nice attack/click from my wood bass drum beater. All the other kick mics I heard were "boxy", "flat", "thuddy", "whimpy",... and sounded artificial. Thank you to Sweetwater and all the YouTube guys for doing those reviews - very helpful!

I used to have a couple Beyerdynamic M380 bass drum mics (lost them in a fire), and they had the same incredible low end, punch, depth,.. the M380's are now extremely hard to find and run about $ - $ for a vintage mic. The e902 is about as close to the M380 mic that I have found,... at a fraction of the cost. The e902 is also built like a tank, very rugged - solid!

My only complaint (even though I'm still giving 5 stars), is the mounting apparatus (as mentioned in other reviews). It's not constructed in a very usable design, especially if the mic is used in a port hole. The mounting apparatus tends to get in the way when searching for just the right mic position. I ended up finding a solution, and that was purchasing an Audio Technica AT-8459 swivel-mount-mic-clamp-adapter. This adapter is the bomb - and fixed the issue I had with the e902 mount (see pics). I don't like using mic stand boom arms, so this AT-8459 adapter did the trick. I have a nice sturdy/compact mic stand for the e902, in just the right position.

Overall, I highly recommend the Sennheiser e902 as a bass drum mic! I'm curious to try it out on my floor toms (which I haven't done yet),....

Awesome for mid to large toms

By Mike from Fort Wayne
Music Background: Heavy Christian Punk Metal & Jazz Fusion Country

Phenomenal mic for mid to large Tom's. If you want a step up from the standard Shure SM57 try these puppies on your Tom's. You won't be disappointed. Thank you Mitch Fraizer in the Sweetwater store for this recommendation. You were right !

Great Mic. for the Low End

By Sweetwater Customer

Just recorded my bass with this last night. I mic'd it to a Mesa 15" cab, and then had a DI out the back of my Mesa Subway head. Combining those two gave me a great sound. The low is really there, and it doesn't sound muddy. I did have to crank the amp a bit to get the mic level up for recording. But hey, if I am going to record my bass, the neighbors are going to know it!! :) Feels heavy duty too. There is some weight to this mic. I am going to try it with my drummer's kick next.

Sennheiser 902e

By philip s. from NY
Music Background: multi-instrumentalist musician/producer

I was looking for an alternate kick mic besides my AKG d112 which I also used for a bass guitar cabinet. The Sennheiser 902e did not disappoint. The sound quality is quite possibly a bit richer in quality. I can't wait to try it on a bass cabinet!

Great Decision

By Jason H. from Conway, AR
Music Background: Mixing Recording artist

Had issues with capturing the kick drum for years. The e902 has made my life so much easier! Seriously! I've tried tracking with the D112, Audix, MD 421, boundary mics, various outside condensers, etc...
Plain and simple the e902 captures the kick the way it sounds clear and pumping! If you are not sure which mic to get for kick drum this one will even your playing field! I can't wait to mix these solid tones! No hassle

Beast

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: 55 years playing, 30+ years making drums.

Watching shootouts on youtube, this one always stood out to my ears. I had been using an e614, and although it isn't meant for low end input per se', it has the same range of specs as the 902 and has proven itself in the past. In the current environment the drum set is in, for whatever reason, the 614 just sounded too soft. I actually wanted the Earthworks mic for low end frequencies but, at more than twice the price, I decided to get the 902 and it's a beast. Not so much a low end difference, some, but the punch and articulation are vastly improved. The guitarist noticed the difference immediately, when he listen to the files. A great purchase for me.

Great for Bass Cabinets

By Studio 1. from Kalamazoo, MI
Music Background: Recording Endineer

This seems like the most accuratemirophone I have found for recording bass cabinets. The low end seems natural, not over hyped or boomy due to the proximity effect. The end ehd rolls off gently allowing the sound of thcabinet to come through without being too colored by the mic itself. It does seem to require a bit more gain than I expected, but it is dead quiet so that is not an issue if you have a clean preamp. This is worth considering before you buy a higher priced, more 'traditional' mic for the job.

surprisingl Good

Solid Build quality, very accurate sound reproduction on Bass cabinets. It seems to be immune to proximity effect, but captures the low end. My new default microphone for bass cabinets.

Simply the best choice to work with the e901...
Use both mics and you will listen the Bass Drum itself, not mic´s coloration!

Best Bass Drum Mic Around

By Nate

Been searching for a good bass drum mic for a while. If you are are on YouTube enough, you are bound to find kick drum mic shootouts. Some mics sound good, but many lack the thump and presence I've been looking for. Then I encountered this mic.
Out of the box, you wouldn't think it would have the punch and thump that it does. Without any EQ, it will split your chest. For a real "kicker" (no pun intended) stick a 901 inside your kick and have the 902 just inside the drum pointing at the beater? Your ribs just might actually explode.
This mic would work very well for rock, funk and any other groove type application.
Carter Beauford of DMB fame uses this combo. So, if it works for them, I'm sure it will work for you too!!

Get this mic...you will not be disapointed.

Good Stuff!

By Daniel D. from Nashville, TN
Music Background: Engineer

I had been looking at all kinds of mics to build a studio with. I narrowed my kick mics down to 3 and decided to go with this one even tho the other 2 where the industry standard. At the time the mic on here and the other site to buy gear off of only had 2 reviews each but all saying it was great. I went for it and was glad i did. It really does give you a great kick sound without EQ as long as you know where to place mics. It really can handle a ton of lows but still give you the punch you want out of your kick drum. If you are looking to get a mic for bass cabs or kick drums get this mic. DON'T HESITATE!

Superb in the hole...

By C H. from McRae, Ga
Music Background: Studio owner, performer, engineer, teacher, arranger, blah-blah-blah

Have used this mic on a few sessions with live kick drums recently, and when placed properly at depth in the port hole of a kick head, it works incredibly well at capturing a blend of attack and "whoomp". Haven't used it on bass cabs yet, but for kick, I'm sold. Regarding kick drums with no port hole, well, you really have to work on proper placement. Well built mic. Learn to work it, and it will work for you.

Loose the "poof" and gain focus and body in your kick drum sound.

By Alan M. from Macon, GA
Music Background: Recording/Mixing Engineer, Producer, Live Sound Engineer

It seems like Shure has had a big hit in the Beta 52 for the crowd that doesn't dig the slappy AKG D112 sound. However, there are times where I feel that I'm getting too much of a pillowy "Poof" to the kick when I use a Beta 52. What to do, right?

Enter the Sennheiser e902. While it's not just a re-eq'd Beta 52, it gives me what I feel to be an overall balanced kickdrum sound for most situations. It's not slappy nor is it boomy. It IS, however, focussed and gutsy.

My only complaint is the mounting apparatus. Sennheiser hasn't really "gotten" it when it comes to this seemingly small part of the mic's body. While the arm is a little more flexible than other integrated-mounting-arm kick-drum mics, the handleless screw and nut configuration sends you looking for tools instead of just grabbing and twisting a small handle to tighten the sucker down. This is no small thing that Shure did very well when designing the Beta 52 and the Beta 56.

To Sennheiser's credit, they were probably more concerned with how the mic sounds and equating that with how it performs. A little thought in the art of ergonomics goes a long way and hopefully Sennheiser will correct this in a Version II of this otherwise fantastic kick drum mic.
