EV ZLX-8P-G2 – Real-World Karaoke & Event Use Review

By Lynn H. from Tabiona, UT
Music Background: KJ, DJ, and Sound Engineer

I've used the ZLX-8P-G2 in multiple real-world scenarios including karaoke, floor monitoring, outdoor movie nights, and dance events, often paired with Bose L1 Pro8 systems.

Pros:
Excellent clarity with clean highs and warm, controlled lows
Outstanding as floor monitors — singers consistently comment on how good they sound
DSP is intuitive and powerful, especially the delay system with feet/meters readouts (perfect for outdoor setups)
Very flexible EQ and voicing options — easy to tailor for music, movies, or live vocals
Punchier output than the L1 Pro8 in dance scenarios, likely due to higher wattage and cabinet design
Pairs extremely well with Bose line arrays as fill or monitor speakers
Cons / Considerations:
The rear-offset pole mount is an awkward design choice that affects balance on tripods
When adjusting DSP settings via the EV app (volume, delay, EQ), audio will momentarily cut out — this appears to be normal DSP reconfiguration behavior but means adjustments should be made before the performance, not during
Built-in Bluetooth playback is noticeably lower in volume than line inputs (common with many powered speakers)

Locking XLR connectors can be inconvenient for frequent cable changes
Customer support experience was less friendly than expected for a design-related inquiry

Overall: The ZLX-8P-G2 is a strong, flexible speaker with excellent sound quality and DSP control. It excels as a monitor, fill speaker, or standalone system and integrates very well with Bose systems. Best results come from setting DSP in advance and using mixer controls during live use.

They get a 5 for sound and 1 for Tripod Use. Therefore a 4 total score.

Very good

By Michigan m. from Grandville, MI
Music Background: gigging professional

Use case: Small gigs/busking for acoustic guitar and vocals, sometimes a looper pedal. Also rehearsal, etc at home.

Pros: 1) Portability. 2) Price. 3) Pretty feature rich: built-in fx and mixer (2 channels)--with complete control available on a 4) Super reliable and easy to learn/use app. 5) two combi (line/mic) jacks, with phantom power on channel 1 and additional dedicated high z jack on channel 2 --I am able to run vox in channel 1, guitar into channel 2 (with a DI) and my boss stomp box looper pedal into the high z. Granted, that means I have to set the output level on the Boss pedal itself to blend with vox and guitar--but it still sounds good and kind of makes it a quasi three channel unit.

6) There is a ton of control through the app. I especially appreciate the EQs: 3 band for each channel, and global EQ-either graphic or fully parametric, which is great for minimizing the "boxy" sound inherent in an 8" speaker, you can also use it like a notch filter to zap feedbacking frequencies.

Between the EQ, presets and FX, I can actually get my acoustics to sound as good as any dedicated acoustic amp I've played through--all for $, and the vocals sound way better IME and the speaker provides a lot more volume. Why spend $ on a Loudbox Artist?

Cons: 1: EV didn't center the speaker pole hole on the bottom, it's located at the rear-most point on the back of

the speaker and makes it unbalanced. If you use a smaller speaker stand like I do, you have to watch it

because it wants to fall forward. On a standard sized speaker stand this isn't as much of a problem.

2: There is no carrying handle on top of the speaker, just one on the side.

3: You have to really spend some time tweaking the EQ so it doesn't sound muddy and boxy at performance

volume. I got there, but it took a while. It just may be me though because I'm used to using The EV50M

for most of my gigs and it doesn't require that much tweaking to sound good. It's a line array and

doesn't inherently suffer from the physics of boxiness like a tradition speaker does.

Overall: I like it, it offers a lot for the money. I prefer the line array sound, but sometimes it's just too much to schlep the bigger rig for a smaller gig.

Sounds Great and Super Versatile

By Mark T. from Elkins Park, PA

I am really appreciating how great these little guys sound! Using as monitors or mains, they deliver beautiful sounds and so smooth. Perhaps I'm now becoming a EVangelist? (see what I did there...right?)

Three things I think make these speakers stand part: the sound quality, the durability and the features on-board.

Simply put, these sound so good. I have some little Bose S1 Pro's I use as micro-monitors...they are pain to dial-in on stage. I have old passive wedges with custom 10" + horns...sound is less than impressive/one-dimensional. These are full spectrum and good dispersal pattern for monitor use.

Much like my EKX-15P's they are built like tanks. Little tanks. This is something I greatly appreciate when using them on stage as wedge monitors.

And lastly the versatile feature set - using them as monitors, mains, bluetooth, dual-input, line out, full DSP options for EQ and limiting, full stereo bluetooth pairing and linking. Amazing!

Magnificent Ceremony/Cocktail Hour Speaker

By D. J. from Hoover, Ala
Music Background: Professional DJ

As an Electro-Voice fan and owner of the ELX200 series speakers. (2) 12P's and (1) 18SP when the new G2 ZLX series was announced at NAMM and released I knew for quite a while that I was interested in the ZLX G2 8P as the replacement to my Alto Professional TS408 that I was using previously. I considered the QSC CP8 and Everse8 which has a cult following of its own. The Everse8 does so many things well and sounds incredible. Ultimately and HAPPILY I bought my ZLX G2 8P going on 2 weeks ago have already done a couple wedding with her and LOVE IT!
It's built solid, light, compact (although larger than my Alto it replaces) still fits in my 8" Gator Case.
The ZLX 8P is rated at 126 db vs. 121 Everse8
Both are plenty for ceremonial, cocktail hour and as a remote/filler speaker. The EV App opens a world of sound, DSP and mixing options. I'm going to add either a Jackery 500 or Bluetti AC50B to my arsenal giving me waaaay more connectivity options outside of just a battery powered speaker standalone.
Verdict: Buy this EV ZLX G2 8P now…and thank me later!

Works for me

By Sweetwater Customer from PA
Music Background: non professional performer

As, I found myself invited to play in increasingly larger areas I knew I was going to need some speaker power. I got one of these and it was quite competent. I've since gotten a second one. They do what I need to get the sound out there.

Excellent, Portable, Plenty of Loud

By Jose S. from NARANJITO, PR

Bought 2 of these for a more portable setup in my solo gigs. Thanks to those effects and buit-in mixer, its just my guitar, multi-fx/looper, drum pad and the speakers. Definitely louder that the battery powered ones since it runs from AC. I'd recommend them for small to maybe medium venues with a subwoofer if AC power is accesible. Let's see the test of time, but I'm very happy with the purchase.
