Have to downgrade from prior review

By Matt L.

I still like this mixer, but I now have to downgrade it to a 3 or even 2 star purchase. From a work flow perspective it *has* been great, but it's proving to problematic in a way that has me considering some other option. The first issue was that the power supply failed after a couple years, which was disappointing, but I found the part online and replaced myself at a cost. But after another year, the right channel fades in and out on the main bus. I dont know if it is a bad component, or a loose connection, but the volume will noticeably drop - especially if the signal passing through it isn't strong. And there is static when the sounds starts fading out. The monitor bus seems to be fine still, but it's really frustrating because it affects the workflow. And it is surprising because it *feels* really well built. I dont know what went wrong on this unit, maybe they have fixed both issues? -- I bought mine like 4 years ago. If it was a cost cutting measure, I would have paid the extra $ or whatever for them to design/build it better. If it was quality control, I dont know, what are you going to do about that? Hope others have better luck. I would have used this unit for the foreseeable future -- I dont need anything more -- but the issue on the main bus is a problem. If I knew it was an issue with an early version, I would consider buying a new one, but what if it just happens again? Has never moved from the mixing desk, and it's a smoke free environment.

Great Mixer !!!

By Chad from NEW LONDON, NC

The pre's are just unreal for the price point. Studio quality vocals, instruments, ANYTHING from a bedroom….if you know what you are doing of course. Great HIZ DI channels that seems like has top notch IR built right into it because I can run right off my pedal board and into the HIZ and sound like I'm playing a high end tube amp through high end cab/speakers. IMO this is the closest you will get to achieving commercial studio console type quality from a $ mixer in a bedroom setup.

Nice Board, But The PC Driver is "eh"

By Nicholas F. from Carolina Shores, NC

I like this little board very much as far as features and sound go. But the driver for my PC is wonky. It cuts in and out at times, sometimes right in the middle of me recording a track (with Studio One software). Sweetwater tried to help, but they really couldn't put their finger on the exact cause. I know PCs can be very weird with drivers and such, but I never had a problem like this with my Behringer interface. But the board itself is very nice.

Squeals like an angry squirrel

By Ed from USA

To be clear the audio signal path is fine...but the power supply hisses and squeals and over the years has gotten so loud that mics are picking it up 15ft away.

There are slots in the top so when I bought it in 2021 I thought it had a small fan. When it finally got unbearable I checked to see what kind of fan I needed to replace and found out there is no fan and that from day one I had a very noisy (and Allen & Heath say defective) power supply board.

When I contacted A&H and they said their distributor would take care of it, but the distributor said I had to buy and solder on a new power supply board I could buy from an authorized dealer like Sweetwater. Sweetwater said it's a special order part- I requested a quote a week ago and I haven't gotten a reply. I suspect they're going to want another hundred for the board, but really, if it's a known issue A&H should have acknowledged it and sent the part from their US distributor. It's frustrating to spend this much time trying to get a defective product fixed. Hopefully soon!

Excellent Live Mixer

By Michael Z. from Lombard, IL

I purchased this mixer specifically for solo acoustic/vocal live performance. I previously had been running my guitar and my vocals through my Line6 Helix directly to my QSC K10 for my vocal and guitar, and while that worked just fine for the most part, I was unable to have an extra mic or instrument channel in case I had bandmates or others who wanted to play along.

I had been looking at a few different smaller mixers in this range and was already leaning towards this one, but when Sweetwater knocked $ off this unit a few months back, I jumped on it immediately. I haven't regretted it. Setup was easy, and I can tell I'm getting a much better overall sound running my guitar and vocal through this mixer than I was before just using the Helix as my defacto mixer. The onboard effects are just right for what I need (mostly a little reverb), and tweaking the EQ to make things right is a breeze. It's very light and small, and now I have a few extra channels on hand if I ever have an extra vocalist or instrumentalist with me.

I would definitely recommend this mixer to anyone who doesn't need a lot of channels, but is looking for a good sounding unit that is easy to use and setup.

Best audio quality in price range.

By Kerry D. from Sandpoint, ID
Music Background: I have been recording and performing for over 40 years and have owned lots of gear.

I have been recording and performing for over 40 years and have owned lots of gear. I bought this Mixer to use in my small venue acoustic music rig. I had previously tried both the Yamaha and Mackie Mixers in this price range. The ZEDi 10FX has the best sounding preamps, effects and overall audio quality. I do wish it had channel faders and mutes. That would make it perfect.

Great little mixer. Unreal value in Jan 2019.

By Matt L. from Chicago
Music Background: semi-pro pop rock performer (Bass / vox) 10+ years. Bedroom producer 15+ years.

Bought this Jan 2019 when the full-price value seemed unreal. Price has gone up 40% since then, but I think it's still a good deal and would probably buy again. When this came out, I'm not sure anyone had anything comparable, but now other vendors are catching on, although the small, multi-channel USB audio interface / mixer is still somewhat of a niche. Feels amazingly sturdy, more than I would expect at orig price point. Sound quality seems good, but I'm an amateur bedroom producer, so have limited reference points. Noise floor seems decent. The effects are probably best suited for live jamming, or in a tracking situation where you can send a dry signal to the computer, but have FX for singing / playing along. I am using with a somewhat ancient rig -- 2010 MP5,1 with OS 10.11 running Logic. But I have had zero issues with this setup. One minor point - a lot of interfaces include a Midi port, but the ZEDi doesn't have that, so I bought a Roland UMone and it works totally fine.

Two additional notable points:
1) the FX channel bus is shared with ST2 inputs and USB 1-2 inputs -- and they all are ultimately controlled by the same fader knob. I find that quite odd when I think about it. it would be better of course if they had separate buses. And while it was never much of an impediment to work flow, I now route the Logic stereo out to USB 3-4, and that has added a little extra flexibility.
2) sometime in 2022 (3 years old then), the mixer started behaving erratically. All sorts of intermittent issues started to show up including pops, sound levels dropping, humming on two channels, and losing connectivity with Logic. It become practically unusable. After a lot of searching I found a new power supply at another large AV retailer online. That fixed everything. Out of curiosity, during the swap, I checked the voltages on both supplies, and indeed on the old supply, they were all over the place. It's a bummer that the PSU went bad, and while ideally A&H would build a more durable PSU, it's a credit to A&H that they offer a replacement via a retail channel. Not sure if it was dirty power, over heating, leaving it on 24/7 [wince], something else, or all of the above that killed it, but there you go.

It would be 5 stars but I took off 1/2 for FX bus weirdness, and 1/2 for PSU failure, but it has just been a pleasure to work with otherwise. great to be able to record 4 dry channels at once, monitor with some FX if needed, and track without latency (assuming you're monitoring your input tracks via the mixer, and not your software that is).

Great mixer

By Jim from New York capital region

I'm very happy with this mixer. Right now I have inputs from condenser mic, 1 mono synth, and 2 stereo keyboards. All is working very well—haven't yet had time to play with effects.

In case this is helpful to others, I spent a lot of time trying to connect the mixer to my Mac with a USB-b cable but kept getting serious hum in the mains and no usb connection. I finally realized I was using a generic cable instead of the one that shipped with the mixer. I swapped them and now all is well. Phew!

Great Mixer in a small package

By Don H.

This mixer has been a joy to use while having to teach guitar online. I'm able to control my mic and headphones, my guitar, and another audio device and be crystal clear. I'm also able to separately control my student's volume. I can't say enough about how easy this mixer was to setup and how clear it is.

Best Bang for Buck

By Nick from Seattle
Music Background: Bedroom producer/metal kid.

This mixer has the features and build quality of mixers 5x its price. 10 channels, 4 channel multi-track recording, onboard fx, and more. I've had this thing for a year and I've barely scratched the surface of its use cases.

I currently use it as my main audio interface in my little studio, and it works well enough for that. As an interface it's not as user friendly as the scarlett suite, but it makes up for it in versatility.

If you need to multi-track record, this thing is outstanding. I keep dedicated mono channels for my guitar and mic rigs, and a stereo channel for my hardware synthesizer rig. 3 band EQ, on-board FX, AUX AND FX sends mean you can shape your tone and work in outboard rack mounted gear before the sound ever hits your PC.

I haven't used this thing in a live setting yet, but it has all the features you want in a live mixer (XLR Main Outs are you kidding me?) Want to add verb or delay on the fly? Do it. There's even a tap tempo. Want to monitor a dry signal and push a wet signal out? Go ahead. Wanna do the opposite? Heck yeah.

My only complaint is that the USB connection is a lot flimsier than I'd hope, especially since it is the linchpin that holds my entire studio together. Eventually I'll get a different interface, but this mixer will always be sitting right in front of it. It's just too useful.

BLUE, KANGAROO, EFFECT NUMBER 92! HUT HUT HIKE!!!

By Byrdman from StLouis
Music Background: Professional

I've had mine for about a year now. For the money it's unbeatable. I love the analog tracking - mute the track in the daw and just monitor through the board. You can doll it up with EQ and effects (that sound GREAT) and still take a pure dry into the DAW to be edited and boujied up later - no tracking time wasted messing with buffering sizes and plugins and loading screens and signing in and forgetting your other ilok for that plugin and everything I hate about all digital tracking. It's fantastic. The A&H hardware sounds amazing and I'm impressed with it at this price point. The AD/DA won't blow your socks off if you're used to recording above 96khz, but I do slightly prefer the conversion on this to a 2i2 at 96khz. 2i2 is absolutely transparent with the air off. I like the color on this unit a little more to the focusrite air - sounds more console-y. Can't tell a difference @ 44.1

Aside from the meat and potatoes; One of the happiest times of my life was putting 4 mics on a drum set, putting on a pair of closed backs, getting a bomb sounding 4 channel mix in like 2 minutes, turning on effect number 92, big gated reverb that cuts off quickly, on all 4 channels and just BEING Phil Collins for a while in my own head. With NO. Latency. No Computer. For $. That alone was worth it knowing I can also record with it. You could do the same thing with a $ behringer board, I'm sure. But it doesn't sound like the A&H. This is an all tube Marshall compared to a solid state Crate in that regard. Individual Boards for each channel strip. Each Channel. Has it's OWN. Transformer... Other boards are a giant pcb. That and the outputs are XLR. *CLAPS* I can't sell this thing any harder folks.

I've also had a Zed6 for 3 years now and that little thing is just dandy.

Allen & Heath ZEDi-10FX mixer

By Paul B. from Vermont
Music Background: Performing, recording, and teaching musician

After living with the battle ax Mackie 1202 for decades (it still works fine) I decided it was time for a new gig mixer with effects. After exploring the numerous trade offs that included quality, price point, inputs, outputs, parameters, and, of course, effects the ZED seemed optimum. In the world of compact mixers, though ideal for small duo gigs, there can be a lot of missing features to accommodate space and price. Allen & Heath hits the mark. I was close with other choices until I discovered something key, like no AUX out for monitors, was missing. Look over all the details when shopping. I think you'll find, in this class of small mixers, A&H is an excellent choice.

Its sound quality when recording with your interface will be the same! It doesn't overheat. Very friendly to use and connect. Its filtering knobs are amazing. I still haven't used the FX section yet, will soon. Each channel has it own preamp soo i can leave it here with that! For the price? Just go for it and try it out yourself

Waiting for this for a long time

By Tobo
Music Background: Hobbyist recording artist

I bought this as an upgrade from my scarlett 6i6 1st gen, I was considering another 4x4 interface that came out recently so I analyzed this purchase thoroughly. First, a friend of mine told me the best way to record is with a mixer. Well, my headphone mix is independent of the DAW mix. For ex, I can send a low vox volume to my recording software and send a higher vox volume to my headphones. This way I can record lower vox and add whatever processing I want later. With the interface to keep the vox volume down in the daw while listening to the playback I needed to turn the playback volume down, hence I wasn't getting a nice overall mix volume on my headphones, problem solved with the mixer. With the interface I had to go through the settup with a mixing software, with the mixer I control everything outside and can even turn the knobs while recording. I am using presonus studio one, I was facing some lattency issues with the scarlett, there aren't any latency issues any more. Takes a bit of reading to figure out the in/outs in the pc but once you figure it out you can do different configurations and record however you wish. It would be cool if they added some free plugins and things as they do with the interfaces. Great deal for the price, the next best thing is about $200 more, from what I saw in this price range is the best and worth it.

Great Mixer but the Interface is outdated!

By Lisa S. from Nashville, TN

I purchased the Allen + Heath Zedi 10FX and encountered a problem with the interface. It is not compatible with macOS newer operating systems from 2019 forward (high sierra, mojave, catalina and big sur)
I will keep the mixer because it is not worth returning and exchanging for the model Zed 10 FX without interface. I had to purchase the scarlet 2i2 to do my live stream. It was frustrating figuring out the incompatibility - I did this review so you don't have to go through what I did!

WOW

By Sweetwater Customer

I don't even know what to think about this little thing. It almost feels like it's a mistake like it's too good for this price. It only has 4 mic pres and 2 DIs, so not very many in and outs - and the knobs are small - but it's built like a tank, and most importantly it sounds fantastic. The noise floor is so low it's almost undetectable, the A/D conversion on its audio interface sounds great! The routing is really awkward but functional. The EQ is barely usable, but who cares if you're going into your DAW, use FAB filter EQ, and call it a day. The FX section also sounds really good. I own an Apogee Element 46 which I totally love, but some days I think to my self, maybe I should sell that thing, this Zedi 10 FX is THAT GOOD. Mind Blown.

Extremely Happy with the Zedi 10FX

By Sweetwater Customer

I was in the market for a small board to pair with my JBL PRX 10's for solo/duo shows when my Schertler Jam150 was not big enough for a room.

I did a ton of research and first ordered the Yamaha MG10xu. After using for a week, i could not deny that it sounded metallic and cheap. Was it terrible? No, but it was so icy cold, you could cut glass with the signal. So, I went back into research mode and boild it down to the Zedi 10FX or the Soundcraft signature line.

After a day of internal deliberation and countless hours reading/watching reviews, i decided to go with Allen & Heath because of the size.

The board is excellent. It is exponentially warmer than the Yamaha which for me, was critical. Mic sounded warm, effects were great and the guitar DI was solid. I think the effects are excellent and way better than the Yamaha. The difference is easily discernible to my ears. The Yami verbs were cheap sounding to me. They were sterile, icy, and way too digital sounding for me.

I am super pleased with the Zed and highly recommend it!

GREAT MIXER! BAAAD Electric plug.

By Mike from Lakeland, FL
Music Background: FULL SAIL 1980, studio, live, touring, Dove Award Winner

I own two A&H Zed Mixers. Sonic quality blows away everything else. Koodos for sound quality. BUT!!!! look at the electric plug. What are going to do the day you forget to bring the proprietary plug to the show? You are dead in the water. Why did A&H change to this? Did they save 50 cents? I will buy them again when they use the standard (computer style) electric plug that is common on most every audio product. IS THIS A PERSONAL BITTERNESS... thankfully I found a cable at a Salvation Army store and got the gig up and running only 30 minutes late.
PS: I love Sweetwater!

Great for a small project.

By Eric D. from Southbridge, MA
Music Background: Noise Enthusiast, Industrial, Unconventional Uses For Instruments.

My wife and I doodle with music and have recently become more serious in our output. A long time ago we bought a Line 6 Pod USB interface and it was so clunky with password protected drivers and other overly unnecessary DRM hoops I was discouraged right away from starting to record, I gave up because I wasted money. We then picked up a Behringer 2x2 interface about a year ago and made some progress in recording but the sound quality wasn't what we were looking for. We then did a lengthy bit of research and decided to buy something we could grow into.

After seeing other 4x4 interfaces and their prices, reading reviews, and watching hours of YouTube videos we opted for the Zedi 10fx for it's versitility with ive and studio use. The FX part is so so and not wholly practical for studio but nice for rehearsing with a live mix and doodling in preproduction.

I am a recording novice but eager. I installed the driver as directed for use on PC and my DAW (Mixcraft 8) picked it right up. The confusion for applying the right input and output in the DAW is my own as there are several ways to put the in/outputs in to the settings . So some experimenting was needed to get it right. Not an A&H issue. All in all we are pleased with the simplicity of an otherwise overwhelmingly complicated looking device from a novice perspective.

The quality of the recording through it is better than expected so I'll be doing a lot more research on doing it right since there's no way to hide the suck I'll be pumping into it.

One thing I wish it had was a 2-4 port USB hub even if there had to be another USB-B port to power it from the computer. Tinkering with midi controllers/instruments with some live instruments would be easier if I could simply be plugged in at the mixer rather than separately direct to the computer. The less long cables strewn about, the better.

No 4x4 with effects

By Jessie P.
Music Background: Experimental / Post Rock

It"s an Allen & Heath so, of course, it sounds amazing and it"s build is sturdy. However, the main selling point is 4 in 4 out usb. Please be advised that onboard and outboard effects only send with the first two channels to your daw. Therefore 4 in 4 out only works WITHOUT effects. This is heartbreaking and should be mentioned. This means tracking several instruments live is pointless if you want effects with your instruments. Applying effects in DAW after the fact sounds no fun at all.

Does a great job as an audio interface and live mixer.

By Scott from ATL

Bought this mixer to truly serve dual purposes - to be a live mixer for small acoustic gigs and to serve as an audio interface. I've only used it for one live gig, but it did great. However, I've used this as an audio interface numerous times, and it's fantastic. Certainly not a small form factor, but it does great for my home projects. I imagine if I desired, it'd be great for recording 4 mic inputs live at once as well. Overall a great and versatile mixer!

GREAT! SERVICE

October 2, 2017

Absolutely fantastic!!!

By Mark L. from Indiana

I've previously been using a FocusRite 2i2 Scarlett. However, that unit has some issues, and needs a lot of workarounds. Additionally, the realtime direct monitoring on the 2i2 does not perform as billed, if you try tossing effects on ─ actually, even if you don't, the latency is horrible. I've always wanted reverb back for tracking vocals.

Enter the ZEDi-10FX. This is -exactly- what I've wanted in an interface! It lets me record my vocals clean to the DAW, while monitoring both my DAW's existing tracks, and my vocals -with onboard effects-. That makes it -so- much better for me in terms of singing. Dry tracking is just cringe-worthy at times, but when you have the FX there, you can get a feel for how it's going to come out once you massage it in the DAW.

I have to say, even when the 2i2 was not clipping, the sound was abrasive, while the sound coming off this mixer is warm and rich, without being abrasive at all. Additionally, the noise reduction circuitry nukes a good deal of my A/C (central air). It takes it from needing to use RX to repair, to just needing a little noise gate.

This is my first hardware-based mixer, and while the routing was slightly confusing at first, it was cleared up in about 10min. It's a breeze.

I'm only using a fraction of the power of this unit so far. It can do so much more, if I need it to. My current plan is actually adding a cable (it's ordered!) to pipe my PC sound out to the stereo in, running Spotify. That'll let me do vocal practise (or bass, if I decided to play bass) against pretty much anything in their library, without having to have an MP3 in the DAW, all bypassing ASIO because it'll be coming out of a different sound device. I see no reason it shouldn't work easily.

This unit is so versatile, powerful, and awesome! I've been nothing but happy with it! It's built like a tank, but not too heavy. Everything about it is pretty much perfect.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this unit!

Great with iPad

Really nice with an iPad and Auria Pro app. I can record my guitar and vocals duo on four separate tracks with condenser mics on the vocals and get a really nice monitor mix while I do it. This a great tracking mixer of you are on a laptop or an iPad. If I could add one feature it would be a midi port for adding keyboard tracks.

Great Mixer

By OldC

If you ever use software to record, this is a great mixer. It eliminates the need for a separate sound card which saves valuable desk space for more synths! enough ins to satisfy most, and sounds great.

I do have a couple of items for the wish list. First off, midi in for a clock on the effects would have boosted this to a 5 star rating. You can't synch your delays to a clock, at least as far as I have been able to figure out. There is a tap tempo but we all know they go out of whack after a few min.

Second is that they have a wide case around the outside that does nothing as far as I can tell. It would have been great if they made the mixer just that much bigger with no edges. The knobs are right on top of each other and for live tweaking its kind of a pain.

Other than that, this thing rocks, and for the price of a focusrite 2 input soundcard you get a 10 input mixer with soundcard and effects. If what I mentioned is not a big deal to you then buy this right now. If it is a big deal to you, well, you should probably buy it anyway.

SOLID piece of kit

By Willq from Canada
Music Background: VERY experienced

This is a great little mixer. Very small footprint, yet the features are all useful and well organized. If you are doing work where you don't need to ride faders, (there aren't any - only a master), this unit begins to make real sense. Add the fact that you can tailor the effects presets (but not store you modifications), and you've got quite a bit of flexibility - and the sound is great. Effective and transparent. That said, there are a few things missing; no mutes, no PEAK LED's on the channels. If you've got enough experience, you can work around the Peak lights, ...just PFL your input when you're establishing your input and gain structure. Overall, it sounds great and is well constructed (a circuit board for each channel - like all old school mixers used to be).
If you have big fingers, you may find it a bit tight, but conversely, this creates a very compact workspace which I know a lot of people will appreciate.

Here's my big beef - the power cord does not use a standard North American connector. I hate this, because if you loose or damage your power cord before a gig - you're totally screwed.
I got around this by immediately ordering a 'IEC Male Kettle (C14) To Clover Leaf Female (C5) Converter', so I can use any of my many IEC cables if there's ever an issue. Big sigh of relief (for under $5)

Otherwise, it's a great sounding little mixer, well laid out, at a nice price point.

PS - the effects are really great sounding, useable and diverse.

Very little competition in this price range...
