If you can find a better 11 pound power amplifier than this. Buy it!!

By Vincent C. from Antioch, TN

I have had my Crown XLS1002 for a bunch of years. Runs cool, has plenty of power, and since it is class D, light as can be. Switch mode power supply too keeps the weight down. 19 inch EIA rack mountable of course. A sweetheart in many venue applications. Also my heavyweight for home theater multi channel and Atmos setups. You are not finding a more capable amplifier at this price that will do what this amplifier does. Not happening. Good on Crown for keeping the price inline in our challenging times today. Another brand who I used to tout has gone up 46% in less than 3 years!

The Crown will accommodate any connection scheme. The Speakon Binding posts are the way to go. I love them. Balanced XLR and RCA and TRS inputs only sweetens the deal for connection versatility. Trigger friendly too. So power sync this amplifier too.

I have another project I want to employ these as Monoblocks and go for it! Good on Sweetwater in carrying the best amplifier bargain in 2025!

Crown XLS 1002 Power amp

By Sweetwater Customer

I have a Axe FX 2 and had trouble with my Mesa Simul Class 2:90 power amp. I searched for a replacement but this amp isn't made anymore and I couldn't find a decent tube amp replacement for it. I ended up looking into these Crown amps as a substitute. I think it has been a good experience . In retrospect I wish I had purchased a more powerful model but this amp is surprising. It doesn't weigh much which is nice for gigging. Also the cost of these amps is a very good bang for the buck.

Excellent Amplifier

By Joe H. from Our Savior Lutheran Church, Laurel, Maryland
Music Background: Lead Audio Engineer, also drummer and guitarist

The Amp arrived directly, and was very easy to install in our rack. Setup was straightforward; the enclosed manual outlined step by step how to connect and configure.

The sound is clear and clean; volume adjustment is precise and in very nice increments.

Good service from Sweetwater and Chris Jenkins.

I started gigging again after a long absence. My old bass rig was to big and heavy to use at these acoustic gigs. I tried a Hartke amp and an Ampeg but I couldn't get My sound. With the Crown 8.lb power amp I am able to use my trusty Alembic preamp and my other rack gear. I am very pleased with my new/old setup.

The Best Amp For My Guitar Rig and Everything Else

By Tyler from Florida Keys
Music Background: Semi-Pro

Owners in my Line 6 Vetta user group began posting that the amazing Vetta HD amps I've used since 2012 have begun failing. Before mine failed I found the closest substitute available - the Line 6 X3 Pod and LIVE. Both formats have the same Dual Amp models, cabs, effects (pre & post) stereo outs, and ability to deep edit the patches on my laptop just like the Vetta can do. The X3s are the software of the Vetta but they aren't amplifiers like the Vetta, so I needed to run the X3s into a mixer, then to a power amp, then to my speaker cabinets using SpeakOn to 1/4 inch speaker cables. The Crown XLS 1002 gives my 16 ohm Celestions (Marshall, Jet City, and Ibanez cabinets) 115 watts each side which is more that enough for me. Speakers with 8 ohms will get double that wattage. The XLS 1002 is very quiet and sounds pure and clean. It's only 8 lbs, 2 rack spaces, and less that 8 inches deep allowing it to fit perfectly into my SKB 4 space shallow rack case between my BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer and Furman 8-Lx rack power conditioner. It's beautiful sounding, easy to carry, and simple to set up. If I need it to be a PA for a gig, no problem, I just change speaker cabinets and add any mics, keyboards, bass, etc into the mixer.

A fine amplifier, flexible, too

By Sweetwater Customer

I use a Crown XLS 1002 for my desktop system, which is quite different from the kind of use it gets generally. However, it drives a pair of relatively inefficient Mini-Magnepan speakers and Magnepan DWM bass panel. I use with two (good) DACs, a Schiit Hel and an SMSL Sanskrit 10th. I drive the unit with a small (Ampapa) tube-based preamp. This amplifier drives the Magnepan speakers with ease. Sound is clear, detailed, and relaxed, supporting the excellent imaging for which these speakers are known. For a desktop system, it provides impressive performance at a modest price indeed. I also use one of these amplifiers to drive a subwoofer on my main listening system, and it works well in that capacity. Its flexibility (see Sweetwater site) is also great, working well in both full-range and low-cut configurations, and as both a stereo and mono/bridge amplifier. I listen critically, and this amplifier works well.

A very good amplifier; a fantastic value

By Sweetwater Customer

First, kudos to Sweetwater for advice in choosing this unit and customer support.

The amplifier - I use it as part of a desktop music system, driven by a couple of Schitt DACs (and Schitt SYS volume control/source selector). The amplifier drives a pair of Mini-Magnepan speakers and Magnepan bass panel. The amplifier itself is quite flexible with multiple input/output options and selectable sensitivity. The Magepan speakers, while not large, benefit from a fairly powerful amplifier. No, the Crown is not "audiophile" gear; it's intended for the pro market. But, yes, it delivers plenty of clean power, preserving the imaging and depth for which Magnepan speakers are known. I use a predecessor Crown unit for the subwoofer on our main audio/home theater system (alongside a McIntosh amplifier for left and right channels). So, our Crown equipment is in good company. The engineering appears first rate; the unit has no hiss or fan noise, by the way. For a powerful amplifier at a reasonable price, look at the Crown XLS series.

Really, a bargain

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Classical music, jazz.

I have two of these units (well, a 1002 and a predecessor model). I use the predecessor in bridged mode to drive a Ohm subwoofer on our main system and it handles that subwoofer beautifully. However, the newer XLS 1002 is in use on my desktop system to drive a pair of Mini-Magnepan speakers and Magnepan DWM bass panel. I use two DACs from Schitt as sources. Magnepan users tend to have audiophile gear; the Crown is pro gear, and it works very well. The unit is silent (no fan noise or hiss) and has excellent detail and imaging. The Maggie's need power; the Crown provides it, cleanly and with imaging and depth. The Crown also offers excellent connectivity, selectable input sensitivity, on-board DSP, and a mono bridged mode. Are there better, albeit more expensive amplifiers? Of course, and I have one in use for the left and right channels with our main hi fi system. Are there better, and more powerful, compact, and flexible amplifiers for the money? Perhaps not. My desktop system really makes my home office a pleasure. PS - Working with Sweetwater is a pleasure. Good advise and fast shipping.

One fine amp for a reasonable price

By Sweetwater Customer from District of Columbia

I've used these amplifiers with Magnepan speakers. In fact, using an XLS 1002 with a pair of mini-Maggies for a desktop system. A very quiet, wide bandwidth amplifier with plenty of power. Good flexibility, too, with adjustable sensitivity and a wide variety of input/output options. I listen critically and rate this amplifier very highly.

About Expectations. Power you bet. Efficiency and versatility absolutely. Audiophile. Well lets talk about that.

By Vincent from Nashville TN.
Music Background: Audiophile, Musician, IT Professional

First and foremost lets get this out of the way why this amplifier is here. It is about sound reinforcement, and used in multiples where need be. Venues like large stage, house of worship and so on. At home in the studio too. Also kind of at home at home too with some caveats.

Lets get the bad out of the way of which there are really nits more than bad.

The amplifier lacks soul. Sounds dry, so impersonal. Okay. A natural for Eq. You can change its voice the way you want too. Lacks slam in the Bass as far as it goes. Nice extension, just not allot there for 2 channel. For Subwoofer drive with all that power a different story there, but on 2 channel even towers, just isn't enough there. That is it!

The good.
Versatility. Mono and Stereo operation, Balanced XLR or RCA single ended. Has sleep trigger though Crown is a little vague on that detail in their sparse documentation. Light as a feather. Like around 11lbs. Doing multiples of these? Your back thanks you.
Speak On connector and not quite 5 way binding posts. A miss there but not enough to call bad.

Menus easy to navigate and setup crossover point and status of amplifier. Really nice there. Plays nice with just about any audio gear. Haven't found anything it doesn't like. From an SD Tascam recorder, to my Anthem AVM-30 Pro to my Denon AVR-4802, it will dance. Nice!

This amplifier steadily got more and more expensive. I used to recommend this amplifier sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. As its intended design purpose, doubt there is better. Sure different but better no. For 2 channel audiophile listening. it is about 3/5ths there. A great addition is equalization like from Schiit Audio's Lokius. $ and bring this amplifier alive. I love the Crowns. I have 2 of these in my theater. One is bridged for the Center Channel, the other runs surrounds off my Denon AVR-4802. What is my primary you ask? For $ more, the Emotiva BAS-X A2. Traditional Power, more meat around the bones, and just $ more. A no brainer. If your focus is balls to the wall applications this is it! Want mega power for a home theater the XLS is without peer in power and value and versatility. Just don't ask it for a soul in your music listening, it is about as engaging as tax accountant.

Solid bass amp for my hifi subs x 2. I plan on running four sealed eight inch subs with it, the crown xls1002 with built in crossover. This is the least expensive amplifier purchase I made in all my life for audio, which puts its $ to sound value out of the freaking park with all the bases loaded. like it love it

Just what I was looking for! I use a Behringer xSeries mixer and this unit is both light AND powerful for most venues that I perform in.

By Todd from Atlanta, GA
Music Background: Keyboardist/Engineer/Producer

This lightweight amp sounds great, is super quiet and has very intuitive menu controls (including ability to shut off the blue panel view lights if desired, and set crossover/bridge settings per channel). I like that RCA, 1/4" or XLR input options are available and work well.

I can't believe how clear, undistorted and balanced my keyboard rig sounds through a pair of 27 year old RAMSA speakers.

Audiophile Use Case

By Jim L. from Antioch, IL

I have a pair of these running bridged in a mono block configuration powering a pair of Magnepan 1.7i planer speakers. These speakers are notorious for needing plenty of high current-high wattage to get a decent sound. The Crown is not only up to the task, but they sound better than any "audiophile" amp that I've had try to drive these beasts. Highly recommended for this application.

Good value

By Sam from Florida

For the price it sells at, this is a good amp. I would not call the DSP "massive" compared to what you can get in higher end Crown Amps (no EQ or Limiter, for example). I am using this one in a small fellowship space and it"s doing fine. Quiet, lightweight are bonuses.

"Doing The Right Thing"

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Composer, writer, guitar & piano player, vocalist, recording & producing.

As always, you are the best! You follow a simple philosophy. " Get up every morning and do the right thing". While this way of thinking should be commonplace it is quite rare, unheard of or not understood or appreciated and therefore not applied. But it speaks volumes and makes business and life great. It's amazing how one degree of focus can make the difference between success and no success. As I've learned, when you focus on needs of customers/clients instead of the profits to be made, the profit take care of itself. After over 10 years of doing business with Sweetwater I am still Blown away! I still get top notch service. My go to person is Ed Nystrom.
My new Crown XLS 1002 power amp was just what I needed. It's noise free / absolutely silent, and powerful. It was the perfect fit for my studio. Based on what I needed and what I was working with, Ed took the time to guide me to this Amp. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
To all of the folks at Sweetwater, Have a wonderful Holiday Season!!

Sweetwater Rocks! Crown amp - - 4/5

By Clarke J. from Norcal
Music Background: Studio, DJ, Semi-Pro Sound

The amp presents a terrific value for the money; and works easily right out of the box - - - But - - - the supplied AC power cord is, at best, 2 ft. long. It won't even reach to the top (or bottom) of any given rack-space unit. Lucky, I had an extra power strip at hand, and was able to plug in. But chances are that many users will need to find and purchase an additional AC cord. Never seen one so short, and Harman should find another way to cut costs. Seriously.

Nice basic amp

By Jerry M. from Watkins, MN

We purchased this and a Yamaha mixer to replace a 20 year old powered mixer. We purchased this to give us more power than the previous setup, which was a 100 watt amp. The amp is a piece to setup. I was surprised at how much better it made our speakers sound. We chose this model over the very nice class AB model because we do karaoke parties and children will scream into the microphone.

The item runs cool after an hour workout.

Clean Mean Power!

By Drennen A. from Pauma Valley, CA

I was previously using an old Crown DC 300A. Which was great for a 30 yr old power amp. Several issues I had with it was there was a really loud and obnoxious 60Hz buzz the second you powered on the unit along with clicking and pooping in the speakers, and the unit doesn't fully power off since it's DC it retains the current so it would still pass signal even if powered down. Also the thing weighed a ton! Not good for studio control room environment.
Fast forward to modern day tech like this XLS 1002. No noise whatsoever, no clicks no pops, super quiet, clean and it just pumps out good stable power. And it's super lightweight!! compared to my old DC 300 this thing is a featherweight! Very simple to use minimal settings. Very straightforward. Not complicated rocket science with a million different buttons and knobs. Crossover settings are useful.
Good buy for Studio, Live, or whatever else you may need a reliable power amp for.

Kool & The Fan!

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Sound recordist.

I have a touring Rig for studio monitoring; this is not near field. It's like if you're in the venue if you're an artist. I used to have 2500 watts per side in stereo. I also have what is called Hollogram meaning if the artist/engineer records it in pristine conditions or as they used to do in the 70's it comes out as if the artist are on stage in your home/studio. The SPL is the same as if in a concert so you visualize the Band on stage anywhwere in the room, example: High hats in the corner, toms all across the audio spectrum, kick dead on, Guitarist walking across stage if not stationary, bassist on left or right, Singer dead center or left and right if they are stalking the stage. Imagery is 3Dimensional. Once you're exposed to this it's hard to live without it.
The Crown Amp filled in for my current Blown Amp. At first I wasn't too pleased; how can you go from 2500/stereo to 350/stereo. The dynamics is way different... Well I bridged the Crown and this was by neccesity. It came through like a trooper. It has a smaller footprint than the original amp so you can imagine how I was amazed.

By Sweetwater Customer

Very clean power. It is very light weight for the power. It does not pop the speakers when powering on or off. It allows for adjustable input levels in case you want to use an MP3 player with it. The LEDs are not too bright, and the screen will shut off after a variable time period. I am very happy with this purchase.

NICE PIECE OF EQUIPTMENT

By Alan

I had a small meeting to play. I purchased the Crown XLS 1002 for the gig and others I expect will be coming up. It is VERY light weight compared to an older Peavey powerhead I own. The Crown is a no brainer to operate and drives my 2 JBL cabinets with power left for larger rooms. Also, I will be able to incorporate it with my larger sound system.

upgrade time

By Roger Y. from Coshocton,Ohio
Music Background: Sound tech for local cover band

Ordered 2 models of this new line 1002 & 2002 to replace a couple of old school peavey tanks that we have.First off these are dead silent at standby, produce very little heat when operating, and are VERY portable! 20lbs for these 2 compared to 75 for the other 2.They run well at 8 ohm bridge as well as 8 ohm and 4 ohm stereo.Don't seem to like 4 ohm bridge go into thermal very quickly. Power output seem a little inflated, these are the same power power ratings as the old schools just don't seem to have the raw output current the old class AB's have.Very clean sounding seem to have better dynamic range than the old school amps.very happy overall with my purchase well just have to see if they can last 30 years like the old ones we have.
