I use these mixers for 12 years , sound is amazing.

By JB from Seattle
Music Background: Rock

Never had any problems eccept wifi not stable , but air 18 has very stable access point .Just buy wifi router for $ and use etarnet out , as simple as that . Sound is great , i was thinking about getting allen and heat q 18 but thats the real trash , hardware and software , both.I think most people who complain do not know what they are doing .Just my opinion.

Don't waste your time or your money. As soon as my singer saw the mixer I bought. He said oh my God. I have one of those it never works right I had to buy an analog board. I thought that he was just not very good with technology. So I fired it up and tried to get it running and every time you save a snapshot it would disappear or load in correctly. Half of the channels worked sometimes and sometimes they did not. I did everything possible. I tried every suggestion to remedy this thing. I even factory reset it. Nothing worked. I spent at least four nights for 8 to 10 hours a night trying to resolve the situation. I finally thought it might work correctly and we took it to a gig on a Saturday night to a packed house. We plug everything in turn it on and there's a loud humming coming through the mains not through the monitors just the mains. So we unplug all of the inputs to see if maybe it was a send coming to it creating the hum. But the loud hum was still there. What a total piece of junk.
Thank God my singer had the forethought to bring his analog mixer because he had a feeling that this mixer would fail just the way his behringer x18 mixer failed. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS. IT WAS A NIGHTMARE FROM THE GET-GO.

Can’t connect to it

By Sweetwater Customer

My iPad won't connect to the mixer's access point to set it up, and the app crashes whenever it tries to connect to the mixer when the mixer is hard wired to my router. The App Store reviews are nothing but people reporting the app crashing since the iOS update to iOS 26, which is what I'm experiencing. Without the app, this mixer is a brick. I'll be trying some other connection methods once I can get adapters for my iPad tomorrow. I really hope I didn't waste my money, this mixer is perfect for my needs. It would be sad to have to return it because Behringer can't update their app to work.

Perfect

By Jesus from Houston, TX
Music Background: Christian Musician 20 years experience. Several instruments.

I saw a few bad reviews, mostly from older people or people who didn't do a little extra research to enjoy the features and the great potential of this XAIR 18/ XR18. I didnt get the Rack version because it was not available(out of stock) at the time i needed it, so I ordered the XAir18. Which is basically the same software just some hardware differences. I lost control of it because the integrated wifi is weak, if 2000 people show up to the venue your wifi and iPad control is gone(too much interference)... learned the hard way. I was going to return it but I decided to give it a second chance, and wow. THANK God I decided to keep it. You definitely need a third party wifi router for it to work. Or you can plug it directly to your laptop or iPad with a LAN cable. I was amazed the second time I used it. I bought a 50 dollar(on sale) router at Walmart to use it with the Mixer this time i didnt have any connectivity issues and worked perfectly fine with the ipad , with almost a thousand people. Nice Highs and Lows. Reverb and gates perfect. We use a QSC mixer which is much more expensive but its getting old and we need a plan B thats why i decided to purchase this one. Believe me im not going to say its better than the QSC Mixer but its literally the same quality . Keyboard was happy, drummer was happy, guitar, and vocals were happy and even the bass player was happy which is weird!!!... i have used it for over a year now , one time 3K people in the church and never had the connection issue again. A couple of months ago OCT 2025 I decided to record an album for my wife , she sings and writes her own songs and I play a bunch of different instruments so I decided to do some research on what do I need ... hahaha guess what those multi channel interfaces cost a leg and an arm just for an interface(no mixer capabilities). But this Air X 18 beauty acts exactly as a 18 channel interface and it works with many different types DAW (Digital Audio workstation software) for example , Studio one, logic, Reaper, etc... in my case I have the Reaper software which is also wonderful. You are able to record 16 channels at a time and then go back to edit one by one and the quality of this recordings is amazingly perfect. And its so easy to use .

Should have read the reviews

By Sweetwater Customer

This was my first (and hopefully only) bad experience with sweetwater. Love this company, but I wish I would have read more reviews for this mixer, because two of the wifi options don't work, and it only functions if plugged in via ethernet. The app, even on a new mac is VERY flukey, and I cant even get one mic to work half the time... I have high hopes for the next purchase, but this one in specific is not it

Beast of a mixer for WAY less than MOST!!

By BIG K. from Texas
Music Background: Drummer/ Producer/ FOH Mixer

FIRST: You SHOULD get an external wx router - the internal wx routers in Behringer digi mixers are notoriously fickle. Even a sub $ wx router will give you ROCK solid workflow! The better the router - the better the range - but I can mix from 50 - 60ft away and that's plenty for the rooms I work in. The ONLY caveat is the aux outputs are on 1/4" bal connectors and somewhat close together - so I use 8" pigtails (1/4" to XLR) for my monitor sends. Plenty of output gain before distortion, even from average powered speakers (JBL Eon for example).

SECOND: Android users MUST use Mixing Station app for Behringer and some Midas mixers (phones/ tablets). FANTASTIC app (spring the $ for the full version), and better than the native ever was anyway.

THIRD: You CAN record multitrack - BUT YOU NEED THE CORRECT DRIVERS!! Free downloads from the Music Tribe/ Behringer website.

Cheers!!

Very good digital mixer/stage box

By Kieve B. from Florida
Music Background: Amateur musician: classical violin, jazz, rock, blues drums and diatonic harmonica

Works well so far (I've only had it for a couple of weeks), but I'm still learning. The one bit of advice I've heard from multiple sources is to get an external router because the internal one isn't reliable. My own criticism is the difficulty I've had in navigating Behringer's website for customer support as a newbie to digital mixers. There's no comprehensive manual or guide pertaining specifically to their newer app, MX-Mix, and not much recent info about it online; that's why only 4 stars.

Been using someone else's for years, just bought my own

By Billy B. from KIRKLAND, WA
Music Background: in a few bands

Got one of these for myself on a great deal Sweetwater was running. Basically the same guts as the XR18, just in a different form factor. If I'm being honest, the XR18 rectangular brick form factor makes more sense, and having the Aux outs as XLR probably makes more sense than having them be 1/4" like they are on this X18. Especially since this form factor has a tray to hold your iPad, suggesting that the expectation is you'll have this mixer with you at FoH. But if the mixer is located FoH, then are you really going to run your Aux out monitors all the way from FoH to stage using 1/4" cables? Doesn't make a lot of sense. (The manual says they are TRS 1/4" outs at least, so you should be able to get a TRS to XLR adapter for them, if you need to do a long run from FoH to stage). But anyway, I can place my tablet on a table next to the mixer pretty easily, too. That works pretty well too!

Nice Little Mixer

By Sweetwater Customer from Wadsworth, Ohio

This is a great mixer. I had to do gymnastics to record and play from the mixer, but I got it done. This IS a multitrack recording mixer. I had NO problems recording five different channels with this mixer. If you have issues, then you might want to seek help. You might be doing something wrong. You can be confident that this is a multitrack record for the rest.

Behringer X Air X18: A Powerful Mixer with a Simple Wi-Fi Upgrade for Rock-Solid Performance

By J S.
Music Background: Award-winning Audio engineer with over 40 years experience in the studio and live

The Behringer X Air X18 is a fantastic, versatile mixer that's perfect for live shows, studio work, and even podcasting. It offers 18 input channels and lets you control everything from a tablet or laptop, making it super convenient to use. One of its highlights is the Midas-designed preamps, which deliver clear, warm sound that holds up in both live and recorded settings. The onboard processing—EQ, compression, and effects—gives you everything you need to craft a great mix. Plus, the ability to multitrack record to a computer via USB is a huge bonus.

One thing to note: the built-in router can be a bit unreliable, so I always pair mine with an external router for rock-solid Wi-Fi connectivity. It's a small adjustment that makes a big difference. With that setup, the X18 is a reliable workhorse that punches way above its price. Whether you're on stage or in the studio, it's a great investment for pro-quality sound.

Caution

By Sweetwater Customer from MI

If you are using android I recommend you don't buy it. Behringer no longer provides the software. 3rd party company sells one that was last updated 2017 and won't work on newer androids. Bought a tablet for it as I know android. If it doesn't work I will have to buy an ipad and lean how to use it. (qualifier... I am not great with tech) Working with support to try to get it to work. If you are using ipad you should be good.

LOVE IT!!

By Vickie I. from Colorado
Music Background: bass/vocals/sound

After working with analog mixers for years we bit the bullet and went with this mixer. I read the reviews about the wifi and had the brains to change the wifi so that only my equipment could ping it and get through, and it has worked like a charm. There IS a learning curve, but if you watch the videos that are out there on youtube you will learn quite a bit, plenty to get you going. We got this and gigged with it for the first time within 9 days and our sound was excellent! Still some learning to do, but we are thrilled with this unit.

Wifi is sketchy

By wayne G. from NY
Music Background: performing musician

Love the mixer. I use the Xair app on my i-pad and it works great. Took me a while to learn all that I can do with it. I've used if both for live performance and as a mixer for recording. I just love it. The problem is the internal wifi. This lulls you into a false sense of security. It works fine as long as there is not a lot of internet traffic. I set mine up at home and it works great. I go on gigs and it's mostly fine. But, just when you're feeling confident about using it, you have a gig with high internet traffic which interfered with the inadequate internal signal. I could no longer control the mixer. This is not a place you want to be with a vocal jazz group that is depending on not only main speakers but monitors. I was bailed out by someone who had an analog mixer. With careful searching, I found that many users buy an external router or hardwire the i-pad.

Behringer X Air X18

By Doug W. from Ann Arbor
Music Background: Musician

This unit has amazing features and puts out flawless, clear sound. I'm using it in my rehearsal/recording studio with QSC K10.2 speakers and nothing in the price range can touch it. It's fast to set up and use right out of the box. It does take some time to get to know the effects, the EQ, the routing options, etc. Being able to move from place to place with an ipad in hand controlling the sound allows you to have the audio levels and tones right regardless of where you are in the room. The real time analyzer feature of the EQ makes it easy to squelch feedback issues. It has more inputs than I typically need and six aux sends which we use to drive in-ear monitor mixes as well as powered speakers (QSC CP8s). It's supposedly made more for studio use than live performance but I think it will excel in a gig situation.
One of the reasons I got this unit was for multi track recording. It will send all of it's inputs via a single USB cable. I've only just started trying that and I need more time on it to comment properly. However, several musicians have been in the room and all agree on the outstanding sound quality (and the look!) of the system.
Thanks Dan Robinson from Sweetwater for your help as always.

mixer good ,NOT a multi track interface!

By Tom
Music Background: producer engineer musician

I have a studio and have bands, working artists over for recording and I play out, I had an old mixer in my new studio and I wanted to upgrade and clean up sound while also using my software , cubase, to multi track "works to multi track with your DAW " . NOTtrue. You Can Not integrate with it you can only record in stereo, very misleading. You can down load the x air edit and play with all the channels. but not in your a software ONLY 2 CHANNEL STEREO RECORDING. This is not an interface in any sense of the word . If you want to lighten the the load on your computer one or two channels at a time ok. If you do live gigs great to control remote monitoring. Oh yeah and all those effects you can only put them on two channels at a time???? Actually let me go back and give this a 1 instead of 2 now that I think about how disengeuous they were. And support ? Behringer sends you to a "forum" so they don't have to explain their misrepresentations. Then you file a "ticket " and sometime later they answer part of tour questions. Hopefully on the forum someone has your exact same hardware, software and problem , yeah sure. So if you need an inexpensive mixer for live gigs with limited effect channels and stereo recording that can't be mixed after , unless you wat to do individual track recording, go for it if you want to interface in any way buy somethig else. Can't wait to try individual wi fi mixes, probably need to purchase their ricey proprietary monitoring hardware system.

You simply CANNOT get more mixer for less money.

By John
Music Background: Musician, FOH Engineer, Home Studio Engineer

Ok, let's forget that this is one of the lowest priced digital mixers. Let's ignore the fact that it has 16 XLR inputs and 6 aux sends. Let's not even consider the multiple ways this mixer can be controlled, and the multiple number of people who can control it all at the same time. We won't even look at the unobtrusive, almost invisible way this unit can be placed anywhere on a stage. We will disregard the excellent array of built in effects it has. We will refuse to listen to the quality sound you get from the Midas designed mic pre-amps. We shall erase the knowledge of the built in multi-track recording capabilities from our minds. And whatever we do, we will NOT add up the cost of what analog gear with less than HALF of this capability would be, (well over $5k according to one video I watched). I will simply ask you to answer this ONE question: What other digital sound mixer, under $500, allows you to do advanced mixing techniques like parallel compression/eq and has a multi-band compressor that you can insert on your main mix bus to help you get a professional caliber mix..? If you can find an answer to that question then you will have another digital mixer you can consider buying for this ridiculously small amount of money. Owning one of these units I can tell you, if you are looking for more mixer than this for under $500 you should stop wasting your time.

Great Mixer/Interface

By Steve from FL
Music Background: 40+ years as a professional musician

There's not much to say that hasn't already been covered in other reviews, but one thing I can add is, this is great as a live mixer and audio interface. I am a keyboardist and I play in a duo with a guitarist and we use backing tracks that we create ourselves. We play Classic Rock and sound like a 6 piece band. I run two midi controllers, using many soft synths including Komplete 11, Sample Tank, and many other 3rd party plugins. I also have a Roland Integra 7 sound module. My only hardware keyboard is a Yamaha MX49 synth. I used to run through a Presonus 2/6 interface, but I kind of maxed that out and needed something more. With X Air 18, I was able to ditch my Presonus and use this as my interface. I am currently running 2 vocal mics, 2 channels for stereo Guitar from a Boss ME-80, 2 channels for stereo inputs from the Integra 7 sound module, 2 channels each for stereo VST's for my controllers, 2 channels for the extra instruments we overdub onto tracks, 2 channels for backing track drums, 2 channels for bass, 1 mono channel for a click track (just a count off that is routed to in-ear monitors), and 2 channels for my performance software which is Cantabile 3. All totaled that is 17 channels, 6 analog and 11 digital. I have the X Air 16 as well, but when I realized this could serve as my interface with 18 channels and 6 aux busses, it was a no brainer. As I did /do with my X Air 16, I use the X Air Edit app on my laptop so I am able to see all channels at once and easily adjust things as necessary. Cantabile allows you to add as many media players to a song as you want, so we take full advantage. The mixer allows us to make adjustments at the gig if necessary, but the mix is set in Cantabile. I also have the app on my iPad and can go out front and adjust anything if necessary. I use an external router because it's more secure and my two iPads are running wireless midi using Midimux. One iPad runs a remote app for the Integra 7 sound module, as well as a QSC touch app for Cantabile 3, and the other runs Songbook and the X Air app. Once I go out front and set the sound, the iPad pretty much stays on Songbook. The effects in this are very doable and you can get some really nice vocal effects and save them as Snapshots. Cantabile sends midi commands as each song loads that recalls the snapshots so the effects are ready to go without having to do anything. Since I don't store or use a tablet in the built in tray, I created a shelf for the mixer in my slant top rack by purchasing two blank rack panels and used heavy duty velcro strips on the panels and the underside of the mixer and it goes nowhere. At only 8 lbs, the panels hold it perfectly and my laptop shelf slides right down over it and the whole thing stays secure. This mixer rocks. It's got a bit of a learning curve, but you will be very glad you purchased it.

Love it!

By Sweetwater Customer

This is a great digital mixer. The more I learn about what it can do, the more I love it. I would recommend using a Windows tablet or laptop over an Apple device. The iPhone apps are very limited in what it can do, over the PC program. With the Windows program, you get EQ, FX, Gate, Compression, Sends, etc. You can save your settings, then load then latter. You could have a live preset, one for studio, then load them when you need them. You can also tag each channel for whatever instrument you have assigned. I know, it's the little things. :) Overall, great mixer. The little mixer that could, and does!

Good unit but BE AWARE OF THIS

By Mike C. from MA
Music Background: Professional Retiree

This is an excellent PA with a great many cool features. I'm using it for my band PA with an iPad Air and two Turbosound iP1000 columns and it sounds great. Nice, compact PA system that works in good-sized rooms. Here's what to be aware of: The unit has a built-in Wi-Fi that is prone to being over-ridden by anyone walking into the venue with a smart phone, looking for a connection. This causes your iPad to lose connection with the X18 Wi-Fi and to lose the ability to control the PA. You then have to reset the Wi-Fi connection, if you can regain the WiFi channel from whoever has latched onto it. NOT good in a live situation. The only way to guarantee that you stay connected is to purchase a separate router, with a 5ghz frequency and set the X-Air to connect through that frequency. Most smart phones use the 2.5 ghz requency, so they won't over-ride the 5 gig. Behringer had known this since they began making this unit, but have not addressed a fix with the newer units. They also have not responded to emails or phone calls from me to address this problem. I bought this unit in good faith and then had to spend an extra $60 to purchase a modem to overcome an issue that Behringer should take responsibility for and should make some kind of concession to the people that have bought the X-Air. Hence my 3 star rating - A great unit with tremendous potential from a company that seems not to care about their customers once the unit has been purchased, making the customer think twice about purchasing Behringer gear in the future.

Meets or exceeds

By Ken T. from Norton Shores, MI
Music Background: Audio engineer, composer, choirs director, keyboard/guitar/trombone

Many well-thought-out features. I do mostly studio work and location recording, but occasionally FOH for smaller shows, and I can easily configure this console to do either task quite well. The preamps are clean and quite clear, as I expected since Behringer makes it known that they are of Midas design.

The channel EQs so far sound smoother and more musical than many analog consoles I've used in the past, the only real exception being ... a Midas! Go figure....

The channel comps are very good, though sometimes they seem to "make their presence known" a little more than I'd like. BUT, this is most likely a symptom of me needing to get on a more familiar basis with the response of the comp parameters, so I don't hold it against the console at all.

For my needs, one of the biggest advantages is the 18x18 USB interface. Many times my location recording is multitrack, so I needed something to back up my aging MOTU interface. I also am being called upon more and more of late to handle small-show FOH or at least multiple live mixes (to stereo audio, foldback to video cam, monitors, ...), and doing all of that from within a DAW while still recording is dangerously problematic from step one. Therefore, I needed to choose a budget-conscious device that could hopefully cover both sides of that coin - multitrack recording feed to the DAW *AND* handle multiple live mixes. OSX's Core Audio plays nicely with the X18, so my DAW just adds it to the list to select and use - no fuss, no muss! The X18 so far is the perfect fit for me.

I've seen a number of reviews that mention it's cool to have more than one mobile device connected so that an audio team can all be working on different aspects of the mix simultaneously. This is indeed great, but I'd like to offer a slightly different thought: Sometimes it's good to have, for example, the faders immediately accessible while working on something deeper, such as eq settings. A single tablet display cannot show both at the same time. If a single engineer were to have 2 mobile devices under hand both connected to the X Air, he/she can keep one tablet open to a fader layer for instant access while the second tablet is used to access deeper parameters - eq/comp/gate/fx etc. Also, with a little creative layer customization (at least on Android, I can't speak to iOS), 2 tablets together can give you simultaneous access to everything resembling a channel strip that the X18 can offer, without shrinking the channel width *too* far while doing it. While I know that acquiring multiple tablets for devoted operations can be expensive for iOS devices, entry-level Android tablets can make this a cost effective idea while still offering all the capabilities. Just my 2 cents....

Overall, this is a great little console. I've not had mine very long yet, but it's already easily filling every need I had hoped to fill with it.

X18

By Charlie B. from Dwight Il
Music Background: Live sound, Play Guitar, Recording

I've been using the X18 for a few months now (about once a week) and love it. I've been using a Presonus 24.4.2 ai for the last few year and really love it, but it's heavy and a bit bulky. A lot of times I don't need over 10-12 channels at the most. The X18 is light weight, (only 10 lbs.), compact, and easy to setup in small places. I won’t go into the specks you can get those online.
I really like the fact that I can walk around the venue with an iPad or Android tablet and make changes to how the system sounds. (Some brands don't support the android systems.)

As far as how it sounds, I’ve had several folks commit on how good it sounds, most of how it sounds is objective, for live sound applications it’s as good or better than most, same with the effects. When you’re recording you add or change the color in the final mix down. I record all of the shows for later mix downs and don’t notice a big difference in the raw data between the two mixers. Keep in mind the ear differs for person to person and I’ve yet to get a complaint on the system.

If I were to find a fault which is not really a fault, it would be that you need some kind of way to control it, be it a computer, tablet, or control surface. I'm old school, I like to be able to grab a fader when needed in a live setting.

I tried using a tablet first and had a few issues so I went to a Behringer X-Touch universal controller. I picked the Behringer X-Touch and I'm very pleased, it works as it should controlling the mixer and takes very little time to get used to it. A Plus is the X-Touch works with most DAW software. (I use Both Studio One and Reaper) Not Perfect but it's very, very good. Seems to be aimed more towards Logic and a few others but seems to work with about any DAW. The only down side to the Behringer that I’ve heard of is the support and documentation. I’ve not used support so I can’t comment on that.

The price for the X18 is reasonable compared to the others in the class, but you need to have or buy a computer at least, and I'd recommend a tablet and this is true for all rack mount mixers. Most of us have these around so that not a big deal, and you can get these cheap now if needed. If you want the Control Surface (I Like the X-Touch) that’s another $450 (New) but considering that you don't need a rack full of gear, it’s all in the mixer. So that kind of helps cover the cost.

For me the X-Touch is worth the money.

All in all, it’s great product.

Pretty nice, but wireless not totally reliable.

By Joshua B. from North Texas
Music Background: Musician for over 20 years, Audio Engineer for 6 years

The features for the price are unbelievable! I've only used it for a wedding reception so far, and the built-in wireless just quit working on me during the evening at some point. It wasn't responding to my iPad or my laptop that were both connected wirelessly. I had to pull out a network cable and connect my laptop to it with the wire for it to respond to me again. If I really want to use wireless with an iPad a lot, it may be best to buy a wireless router that is a little more robust than the built-in wireless..

Solid mixer

By 00judas from Mid south
Music Background: 25 years of gigging/recording experience

This is my first digital mixer after 25 years of using analog gear. There is a learning curve at first, but as long as you watch all the tutorials-you can pick it up rather quickly. This is the main mixer in my home studio now and It does great!

Outstanding pice of gear

By Jeremy P. from Simi Valley, CA
Music Background: Drummer

This board is the BEST on the market for its price. My company uses this for small to medium size shows and the X32 for large size shows. It's never failed to impress. The EQ on every channel is fully parametric you get a compressor that sound very good for a board of this price and the gate is awesome! There is so much packed in this thing for such a small price. I recommend this to everyone absolutely amazing consol!

Lovely

By Perez M.

This console is a must have if u love good sound yet u desire a very flexible set up. Easy to use...its like a magical box. Everything u need to make your mini gig boom right is in there...Great dynamics and brilliant effects. My only issue is the fact that u can only use 4 effects at once.Nevertheless, if u understand what u are up to, that won't be much of a problem...

Thanks Behringer..

Oh!! The preamps are great as well... chao!!!

Amazing!

By Dylan W.

This is a great mixer! The built in wifi works well with a couple of devices. If you need to connect a ton of devices at once I suggest buying an apple airport express or something of the sorts.

I have had no problems so far; the build quality is very nice. I think you should buy this if you need a nice little digital mixer.

Everything I could ask for and more

By Joel S. from Union Grove, WI
Music Background: 30 years, vocalist, guitar, sound technician

I bought this mixer at a great price and chose it over the xr18 for that reason. It is still built really well and I intend to use it on stage as well as on my desk. I like the way this looks on the desk rather than the box and it has extra rca jacks to connect to my headphone amplifier. In either case, I would use an external wifi unit just to make sure in a live situation. Don't know why they charge so much more for the other one but I didn't fall for it.

You can read other reviews on how the basics of this thing work but I am going to tell you how the x18 can go from a really good mixer to making you the superstar sound guy in your area.

You see, recording by the interface option is just scratching the surface. In order to get the full use out of this mixer, since you are hooked up to a computer and daw anyway to do your recording, use the daw plugins for effects and other things. Even though the effects on the x18 are pretty good and you still want to use some, the plugins on your computer are way nicer. For example, I am using reaper and drum triggers I made out of some piezo disks for a couple bucks. Tape them to the drum heads, send them to reaper and put them through addictive drums 2 and you get studio drums from your speakers... live. The guitar amp simulator in the effects is practically useless compared with amplitube and you can use the midi port to plug in a midi foot pedal. Want to use butch vig vocal effects, got em.... And so on. There is nothing on the market that can possibly sound any better. I have a haswell i3 laptop and use a latency of 128 samples and no one can tell.

Mix all the effects in your daw and then import it on an unused effects return on your x18. I have a windows tablet so I can get the full desktop app on the tablet, control the daw through remote desktop and everything is still mobile on the tablet. Unless you need more inputs, this is all the mixer you will ever need if you know how to use it.

I have a tascam us16x08 that I tried to use this way but the drivers are still buggy even after 2 years, I don't know what tascams problem is. When you change effects the latency can jump to over 250ms which is completely unacceptable. This problem does not exist in the Behringer drivers. 6 of the line inputs on the tascam do not even have level controls. I worried that the x18 only had 16 bit for recording but the daw converts it to 32 bit floating, processes it in 32 bit and then converts it back to 16 bit so you really don't loose any quality during the processing. I wanted to use the tascam for zero latency recording but there is no reverb on the vocals (which they originally promised when they advertised it). But all the effects are available for zero latency monitoring on the x18. So, my tascam interface is going to be sold. I have used tascam products for recording (porta studio, digital porta studio, us16x08) since the 80's but unfortunately they have lost me due to their poor attention to -not even quality but- basic functionality.

The only thing this is missing from the xr18 is the instrument level inputs and that is cured by xlr to line transformers picked up from radio shack or amazon. Since my band has 2 guitar players and a bass player, the 2 lines on the xr18 wouldn't be enough anyway to go direct.

Hope this helped, I really love this thing.

learing curve

By ViSo M. from Reading,PA
Music Background: A guy that spends to much money on sound gear

there is a learning curve when you decide to use this mixer. I have read some of the other reviews and honestly most of the issues that the other customers had are user error. I had a lot of the same issues the other people have had. take the time and watch the videos on YouTube. it will clear up any issues you may have.
we know that there is nothing like that analog sound. if you been using knobs and sliders all your life it hard to change. but when you can just show up with this and not racks and racks of gear.. you will understand why digital is the way to go. it may not be perfect but what is cool about this is most of the time you find an issue. its a programing thing, something you can write to Behringer tell them about it and eventually they can fix it with an update.. (aka you don't have to run and buy a new board just get the FREE update)

Word of advice. when you set up your network.. its best to start with an android device before using an ipad. I had some issues setting up my network key with the ipad. but I downloaded the app to my android phone and set it that way.. after that everything was groovy..

Not impressed

By Ron P. from Texas

Not impressed with this mixer. IPad Application requires a lot of shuffling. I tried this at home, and then put the mixer back in then box. I doubt I'll ever use it. If I could do over, is save my money up and buy one of the smaller X32 boards. They are way more versatile.

Take the plunge

By John D. from Valparaiso, IN
Music Background: Musician

While I was very skeptical of Behring products, I was urged to give the digital products a try. I am very glad I did. The versatility of this product is beyond compare. Consequently there is a learning curve for analogue indoctrinated dinosaurs such as myself. It required a huge leap of faith to lose access to moving buttons, but that faith is rewarded in sheer versatility. Whether recording, or live, or both, chances are good you will run out of things to throw at this beast. From the effects to the usb, Main outs rca or aux sends, busses, the sound is clean with decent headroom all around. My 1/2 star deduction is strictly a personal thing. If the desktop model depth was just 1/2" - 1" shallower, it would fit easily into a larger laptop case. Word of advice, take full advantage of the many informative videos available. Also, the Ethernet plug into a laptop secures connectivity. Still, get a dual band router, and set it up to secure your connections. Have fun and enjoy this thing. I know I will.

Not right for me

By Jerry H. from Mineral Point, WI
Music Background: country music and some classic rock

The X18 looks nice but is difficult to use and there was no manual in the box. Had to go online and watch videos and do lots of searching. I run sound from stage and miss being able to just look at the board and know what to do. If your a techie person who was raised on touch screens and Xbox and iPhones and all of that it's probably second nature to you. This has a lot of features and great if your a pro but too much for weekend warriors. If your an old fart like me its best to stick to the basics. Will probably trade this off for a new Behringer Xenyx or a 24 ch Eurodesk.

Beginners x18

We like this product, but we couldn't use our phone to run it and the iPad was too old and couldn't get an app. So we're having to buy a special iPad for it.

Not for big gigs. Pretty worthless except for home studio..

By Wally J. from Ann Arbor, MI

The X18 is a marvel of technical wonder. It was great for rehearsals, and mixed and performed like it should...UNTIL THE GIG. We have 3 shows a year with about 5,000 people attending. Once the house filled, we lost control of the X18, all 3 times. The only thing I can think of is that there was 5,000 cell phones all reaching for the X18 wifi signal which diluted our ability to control and tweek the sound. After each show, we looked at the system, and it seemed to work fine again, until the next show... We even dedicated and passworded the signal and still, it didn't work. Period. SweetWater refunded our money without question. Thanks. This is great for gigs where there are no patrons, but then why is it on the market at all? C'mon Behringer!! We lost a lot of money and had to cancel 3 major performances. Nice idea, but worthless. I have heard that the Mackie DL1608 fails at the gigs also. Oh what to do??

Really wanted it to work out...

By Clint S. from Albany, IL
Music Background: Semi Pro

I have owned my X18 AIR for almost a month, and bought it with the hopes of migrating the band I play bass for off their big, old, heavy analog gear and bringing them into the 21st Century. The guitarist still insists on using a tried and true PA from the late 70's/early 80's that is beyond antiquated - but works flawlessly. Needless to say - our backs just cant handle the weight.

On paper this unit sounds like a godsend considering the price, weight reduction, and how many pieces of gear it replaces. I received my unit and the construction/build quality was very nice - better than most Behringer products. The X18 AIR ap was very user friendly, and after watching a few Youtube Videos I felt that I had a good solid understanding of the ap itself.

Putting the unit into use was another story. During both practices and gigs, we have encountered major problems with feedback on the X18. I have ran other analog systems and have never had to notch out more than one or two frequencies in the mains or monitors to kill feedback - and I do know how to configure a PA (Mic placement, cab placement, input gain, etc...) With the X18, we have to kill anywhere from 7-15 frequencies in the mains, and 6-8 in the monitors just to keep the system from squealing. Doing this obviously makes the system sound terrible.

Another big disappointment tis the channel EQ section. There is no option for a "simple" rotary or vintage style EQ. You only have a parametric EQ available, which the center frequency can get "bumped" side to side when you are trying to make quick adjustments on the fly in the heat of a gig. There is nothing to "lock" the frequency in place.

Unlike others, I have had no issues with WIFI connectivity. You do need to go in and make some adjustments to the WIFI settings, such as changing the WIFI channel and adding a WIFI password and making those adjustments should alleviate most of the WIFI problems.

I have called Behringer's support lines, watched numerous demo videos, and consulted online forums, etc... and still cannot use the X18 in a gig situation without embarrassing results. It's unfortunate, because the idea behind the unit and the possible benefits sound remarkable. However, implementing the unit just has not worked well for us, and unfortunately we will probably have to go back to using our dinosaur mixing consoles and effects racks.

X18 fan

By Aaron A. from Hawaii
Music Background: Producer- Engineer

I was looking for another USB interface for recording. The X18 packs more features than any comparable interface at it's price range. 18 channels in one pass, and it works as advertised once I had it set up. All this and you can take it to your gig to run sound. Unbeatable value!

X18-Xcited

By Kerry P. from NW Ohio
Music Background: #1 folk artist of 2014!

I have been doing the rack mount equipment dance for some time now. As a solo, touring singer songwriter who occasionally plays with other musicians and/or a band... I need something that is SMALL... does a LOT of stuff and works ALL THE TIME! This last piece is non-negotiable.

I have been traveling with a MOTU 828 for some time. LOVED IT! It ALWAYS worked and never let me down!!! However, plugging in additional instruments was challenging without a computer. A local church I work with asked me to set up their new Family Life Center with a sound system and we went with the rack mount Behringer X12. It was... IS... amazing! Based on my experience with that unit, I decided to purchase the Behringer X18.

BOTTOM LINE?

Do I love it? YES! This table top unit does the work of a rack of gear all with the ease of an iPad interface.

Why only 4 starts then? I have used this for 3 concerts now. Each time, I have recalled the saved settings and tweaked for each gig... then lost the wireless connection between the X18 and iPad. The unit still worked and because of initial set up... the ONLY thing that needed adjusting was volume... which was easily done from the power amp and/or powered speakers. That is why I gave this ONLY 4 stars. I wish it had a more powerful Wifi.

NOTE- I have purchased an external WiFi extender that will remain in the rack mount with my power amp... but have yet to use it.

Pretty Good

By Clif from Mississippi
Music Background: worship leader

We just replaced a 20+ year old Mackie SR24 in our youth room with the x18. I was amazed with how much better the x18 sounded with little to no adjustment to eq by using our preexisting amps and speakers. It is pretty easy to use. I've used it with an Ipad Mini and a laptop pc. I think we got a pretty good bang for our buck on this one. We also are planning to use it to bring to events outside our church as an easy mobile solution.
