Warm Audio WA-47Jr Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone - Black Reviews

Transformerless Large-Diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone with 3 Polar Patterns, 10dB Pad, and 70Hz Highpass Filter - Black

Compared to tube-based microphones, solid-state microphones like the Warm Audio WA-47jr are prized for their detailed sound and resistance to distortion. These are the reasons transformerless FET mics with a U47-style capsule are so popular on kick drums and other percussion instruments, capturing their power and intensity with amazing fidelity. So naturally, the WA-47jr shines on percussion. That said, it’s also a go-to choice for acoustic instruments where capturing fast transients is critical, and it should be on your short list of mics to audition on vocalists, electric guitar cabs, and a whole lot more. Perhaps the more pertinent question is: what isn’t it great on?

I've Wanted a Good Mic for a Long Time

By Sweetwater Customer on January 12, 2023

This mic is wonderful and my bandmates have given me feedback that my vocals are very nice because of the mic.

AN EXCELLENT MICROPHONE

By Mark King from Beautiful Melbourne Florida on December 17, 2021 Music Background: Retired, loving life and my wife

This microphone sounds great and when I face mic decisions for recording, that is all I think about. This is my third 47jr purchased from Sweetwater and first one in black. It has the same capsule as its much more expensive tube counterpart, the WA-47. The capsule is responsible for the overall tone of a large diaphragm microphone and this one sounds good.

I use a stereo pair of these 47jr as room mic's in my amp room where my four Marshall 4x12 cabs and Leslie 147 make their magic sounds. This pair of mic's captures a wonderful natural tone with excellent positional information conveyed in the recorded stereo audio.

No fancy briefcase or wood box included with the mic but the carton is fine with me, stores in my mic locker perfectly and keeps the mic dust free. More importantly, the mic ships with a "hard mount" and a "shock mount". Sometimes I need the more compact hard mount when doing multi-mic setups.

I normally only use the cardioid pattern but it's nice having the Bi- and Omni- positions. Just listening you'd never know this mic is under $, it's a deal.

Good music to you!

Super Beef for the money

Yes. Acoustic guitar. Yes. Percussion. Yes. Vocals. Yes. Performance beyond the price point. Ended up buying a second one to do cool pairing stuff. The first one I got had a misaligned capsule, which seems like no big deal, but if you're setting up a drum kit or piano or micing the bout of an acoustic, and eyeballing from arms length and visualizing the pickup range based on the metal band holding the screen together as the plane of the capsule, it won't give you what you expect. Ultimately, yes of course, use your ears, but really.... It came with a tag saying it had been inspected. I casually spotted it right away, which I found to be particularly aggravating. I'm not afraid to open things up, and this may have been something I could adjust myself, but that would void the warranty, and- it's brand new! Shouldn't be a thing. But Sweetwater exchanged it no problem, and they didn't send that one back to me when I ordered a second one. I've heard that I could expect Warm Audio customer service to be equally accommodating, and in this time of free shipping it cost me nothing. But it did set me back on project plans I intended on getting deeply into. Shouldn't have been in play to begin with. C'mon, inspectors. That said, I have a WA412 that I'm totally in love with for guitars, bass and drums, and a 273 that isn't obviously wonderful until you hear things in context and you realize what might have seemed dark at first is super 3d, again, at the price point. But also very far beyond the price point in performance. I'm really stoked on the company and what they make, and my tracks sound way better already, just from running my same other stuff through their stuff. Working for me. Working for my clients.

Great Sound and Sensitive

By David from NYC on January 28, 2021 Music Background: Professional Singer / Voice Teacher

The WA 47-JR was an impulse buy. I already had several different microphones but had the feeling I was missing something in the sound. The 47-JR proved that! The mic is so sensitive, and responsive, it resembles the feeling of being in the recording studio, and with his suspension bracket, it looks way cool! Great value for the money. Highly recommend it.

Warm and Crisp

this was a great deal. It is really solid build, although the shock mount screw doesn't go on as smooth as I would like.

Great sounding mic6

By Sweetwater Customer on December 20, 2021

I was looking for a large diaphragm condenser with a fairly flat response and this mic fit my budget. I used it to record a harpist and it sounded great. I'm looking forward to opportunities to try out the figure 8 and omni pickup patterns.

Stunning for the price

By Alan Bean from Harrison, ME on December 16, 2021

As a pro studio owner/operator for the last 27 years, I have amassed a pretty large mic collection. At times, choral groups come in and I may need 12-16 vocal mics put up at once. I bought a couple of these on sale specifically to expand my capabilities for that purpose. All I can say is there is NO compromise in sound quality with these mics. Clarity, body, airy top end with no harshness and dead quiet S/N noise ratio. Plenty of gain.

I just recorded a singer/songwriter (acoustic guitar and vocal at same time) doing a dual fig-8 set up with a pair of these and was stunned at how it compared to my stable of usual high-end suspects. Why 4.5 stars? Cosmetics only. The mic looks fine, but it doesn't have the immediate "wow" effect of some of my high-end mics. Yeah, that does NOT really matter!

Comes with both shock mount and regular stand mount and extra elastics for the shockmount. I have never auditioned a better mic for the money. (Disclaimer: I record through Millenia preamps, so I cannot testify what it sounds like through cheap preamps.)

I liked the first pair so much that before the sale ended, I bought two more!

great multi use mic

By Ben Phelps from Warsaw, IN on March 31, 2021 Music Background: Enthusiast/Noise Maker

I bought this for the figure 8 pattern to be used in a mid/side configuration. This is not a symmetrical figure 8 pattern mic though, so it works but its won't be quite the same left to right. The biggest giveaway for this was the proximity effect. I didn't notice it as much on one side vs the other and this could be useful. Loved the look, the feel, and using it. Its a great mic, just be aware of the figure 8 being asymmetrical. I gave it a 4/5 so you might read this to see why it wasn't 5 star material.
