Vocal Harmony Effect Pedal

With TC-Helicon's VoiceTone H1, vocalists can have fun with stompboxes, just as guitarists have been doing all along. VoiceTone H1 adds one or two voices of rich, realistic harmony to your voice. You can use the key selector to dial in harmonies to fit a song, while the cool guitar-sensing feature keeps your harmonies in tune. Although VoiceTone H1 fits the form factor, to call it a stompbox would be misleading. As a member of TC Helicon's VoiceTone lineup, VoiceTone H1 is strictly studio grade - complete with a clean, quiet mic preamp and studio-quality A/D conversion. So give your backup singers the night off. You've got it covered with TC Helicon's VoiceTone H1.

TC Helicon Voicetone H1

By Sweetwater Customer from 49

I just purchased my second H1. I play solo and duo acoustic gigs. I use the H1 to add a little something extra on the chorus of some of the songs. It adds a nice harmony to your vocals. I use mine set to about half way. Any more than that is too much for what I'm doing. The first one I had finally had to be replaced after about four years of use doing these gigs. It took a beating and still worked but was starting to make some background noise. I replaced the old one with the new one and problem solved.

Blown away

By Wes B.
Music Background: 40+ years performing

I am the sole vocalist in the musical trio I perform in. I was a bit skeptical about the quality of sound that was achievable in a device this inexpensive. I assumed I might have to spend several hundred dollars to get anywhere near a natural harmonic tone. Boy, was I wrong! I have utilize this twice now in public performance, and the people in the two venues we played, have all been very complementary about the vocal harmonies evoked from this device. It is well worth the investment if you're looking to add vocal harmonies to your group.

Solid performer

By SK

Simple, straightforward operation. Harmony options fit my background vocals needs. I plug an output from my keyboard to eliminate fumbling around trying to dial in the right key.

TC-Helicon Voicetone H1

By Mike K.

I wanted a simple to use harmonizer that didn't break the bank and the Voicetone H1 fits the bill. It's easy to setup and sounds great.
If you are a solo acoustic player, as I am, I recommend it.

Works OK with some caveats…

By Sweetwater Customer from Silver Spring, Md
Music Background: Singer/songwriter, performer, mostly acoustic roots music

I've been using this unit at home for virtual open mics and band practices, and have found that it has some idiosyncrasies that make me hesitate to try it at actual gigs. I play guitar (mostly acoustic) and sing, so I've been mostly using it in "guitar input" mode. The problems I've experienced have to do with false triggering on bleed-through of the acoustic guitar into the vocal mic, and feedback occurring on the processed mic due to the additional gain introduced by the mic gain preamp on the unit. Let's just say that it's a delicate balance getting enough gain on the mic to make the harmonies track perfectly, without having it trigger on bleed-through of the guitar, which adds garbled "noise" to the background, and I have pretty much given up on using it with an acoustic guitar (works good with an electric guitar running direct, monitoring with headphones). Be forewarned that the built in mic preamp has A LOT of gain, and can easily cause preamp saturation and feedback if you're not careful. I have tried it with several vocal mics (Shure SM58, AKG C535, Shure SM86). It has built in, always on, non-standard (24V rather than 48V) phantom power, which works OK with the C535, but not with the SM86 for some reason, so I'm also marking it down for the phantom power being non-standard and un-switchable.

Perfect Addition to the C1

By Sweetwater Customer

I added this pedal to my C1 and I find that it is a perfect addition. The two together are great! I am not a singer but I get by just fine with these two!

simple and functional

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: retired guy with an expensive hobby who plays out several times a month

I've used the T.C. Helicon Play Acoustic in the past as a harmony pedal. That one has many functions and works great but was much more than I needed. This one is perfect for my uses as I am interested in adding harmonies to just a few songs in a standard 3 hour show. I use it set so the guitar determines the key and the mix of wet to dry set at about 10 oclock. I will use it live this weekend and expect it will deliver.

Harmony for a solo vocalist

By John from Michigan
Music Background: Singer / Songwriter - Soft Rock and Folk,

This pedal provides effective vocal harmony only. No other effeects are included.
Using the Guitar as my basic chord input, I have found this pedal to be very effective to provide a harmony "boost" to Chorus segments as well as full on duo type harmony for the appropriate songs (think C+W or Everly Bro's). If this is what you are looking for - this pedal is a very robust choice.

Best voice harmonizer for solo gigging

By Jim from Central Florida
Music Background: Have played for a long time solo and band gigs.

I'm on my second one of these and love it. I've used it with bands as well as solo but it is a premium feature to add to your solo performance. The pass through guitar tune match function is fantastic. I never have to worry about setting a key for voices, my guitar does it. I bought a second one after many years using the first one and the foot switch started wearing out due to constant clicking in and out for just about every song I play. I wouldn't want to be without this fantastic foot pedal in my board.

OMG!

By Ken from Wisconsin
Music Background: working pro

This little device is awesome! If you play acoustic singer-songwriter gigs, you neeeeeeeed this. If you understand how harmonies work compositionally, you can make your one voice sound like The Eagles. It's total ear candy. I love it, and I'm already picking up more solo gigs because of it. Couldn't be happier with a single piece of gear.

As expected!

By David W. from WA
Music Background: 12-string guitarist for 60 years!

I've had the Helicon Voice Live for a number of years, and was impressed by it. So much so that I bought this H1 without worry, and was not disappointed. I used it in an acoustic gig with my 12-string guitar, and many in the audience were curious as to where the other singer was!! Bravo Helicon, Bravo!

Singer's Best Friend

By Gene F. from Graham, TX
Music Background: I'm learning how to play

What an awesome harmonizer. I love it! Playing my guitar through it makes your harmonies spot on. And the actual harmonies are super. I've also played my keyboard through it and the harmony recognition is also great. To say this is my favorite stomp box would be 100% accurate. And TCHelicon builds them to last. A tank could run over this pedal and I don't think it would put a dent in it. I love this pedal!

AWESOME HARMONIZER

By Dick M. from Inglis, FL
Music Background: Music teacher

I do a lot of Eagles songs in my repertoire and this little guy is really something to have when you do Eagles songs.
First thing is that it sounds like real harmony voices, and not the robot sound you can hear from other devices like this, so it's really sounds like it is REAL harmony voices coming from this great harmonizer.
I have owned a lot of stuff during my life and when it comes to the song, it just have to be perfect when you are alone as I am, so, to add extra harmony to my voice is very important and this H1 will never disappoint you, it just back you up, and that's the only thing you need.
So, I do recommend this TC HELICON product to 100%, because you will be happy with this little guy in your gear trunk!

By Karen H. from ALPINE, CA

WOW!!!! Super fast shipment! This little device is so amazing! I do a lot of acoustic playing and this Voice Tone is awesome. Super simple to set up right out of the box. Nice little pedal to travel with. I use with a Fender acoustic amp, it works and sounds great! I see myself getting more devices like this. Works great for worship services. Sweetwater is the best! I'm never disappointed by any product I have bought here. Thumbs up guys!

Hatmony

By Dick M. from Inglis Florida
Music Background: Music teacher

I bought this harmony pedal because I sometimes feel that I need something more to my voice when I for instance do an Eagles song.
And everybody knows how great they r on hatmony!
Anyway, I"m a music teacher so I guess I can say after all there years as a teacher and a musician that I can sing.
But no matter how strong your voice might be, if u r a solo performer u can never harmonize.
So, I bought this TC Helicon H1, and my gosh was I surprised, it kicked in at once and u could really get this feeling of true harmony.
I can"t really describe it, it"s something u have to feel yourself.
So my advice is, buy this pedal and u will be satisfied...,.lat least I was!
Also thanks to Sweetwater for the fast delivery and once again thank to Geoff for your consultation in whatever I ask for, u r number one Geoff!

Mind of its own

By Forrest B. from Jensen Beach, FL
Music Background: Solo guitar/vocals

I like it when it works right but for some reason it comes on on its own even when I have not stomped the switch at inappropriate times, making it unusable for now - unless I can figure out why it is doing this.

Natural Harmony

By Wally H. from Coldwater Mississippi

It performs exactly as advertised, and is extremely simple to use. You can even get the harmony to modulate which is very cool, as an example Seven Bridges by Eagles.......just a cool tool for a solo acoustic player.

TC Helicon H1

By Dan from Chesterfield MI
Music Background: Solo performer

3rd unit and same failure mode has just shown up after 3 rehearsals. All failed with the guitar input, cutting out, fading in and out and now out of warranty, clearly a batch failure. Works ok with manual selection ( at least for now). Shame as it is a well made pedal with a stout case.

By Sweetwater Customer

The unit itself is not phantom powered. It has to be plugged in to a power source. No battery option. Dumb.

best harmonizer

By Jimbo from Alabama
Music Background: fiddle, guitar, bass

I use the H1 harmonizer on my fiddle board. I have used the TC Helicon Harmony Singer, but this is much better. Being able to dial in the key or use the guitar signal is great. I use this for a simple harmony or to get a pretty authentic full string section effect. For the string section, my signal runs through the H1, then a Flashback very short delay with slight modulation, then a bit of reverb. Awesome sound.

Disappointed

By Toby from Auburn, Indiana
Music Background: Self-taught

Was not what I expected. Seems harmony only available on high notes. Lower voice sounds like gargling with gravel. In my opinion, did not perform like the advertisements. Perhaps I should have opted for the higher price model. I do not use it and would not recommend it to a friend.

Decent

By kevin from Pennsylvania
Music Background: i like to play

Sounds artificial for most part. Probably has its place somewhere, possibly as a back up singer using it, which kind of defeats the purpose. Only used it several times, could be operator dependent. I will likely continue to experiment with it.

Cool Accessory!

By Jim B. from Minnesota
Music Background: I've been playing guitar and writing songs for over 25 years and performing in someway during this time. I've been a solo artist for the past 13 years performing throughout Minnesota and other states.

I'm a solo performer. I've always wanted a way to add harmonies to my vocals without having to hire background singers (You know how they can be.......... ) I came across this device, read the reviews and decided to buy one. Good decision! I'ts added so much to my vocal performances. It's simple to use and the only difficulty is getting used to punching in and out at the right times in my songs. It gets easier the more I use it. There are probably other, more expensive devices available with more features, but for the money, this one works just fine for me!

The Eagles in a box

By Merv D. from Granite Bay, CA
Music Background: Bassist, vocalist, singer / songwriter , sound engineer.

This little thing is just what I was looking for. Easy to use, natural sounding. A lot less latency than other auto harmony devices. The only issue I found was the delay in getting the harmonies to come through after pressing the foot switch. A bit of practice at pressing the switch a half second or so before you need fixed that, but it did cost it half a mark. Apart from that, great for two or three part harmonies. Warning though, one of those effects where a little use could possibly be more beneficial than over use.

TC- Helicon Voice Tone H1

By Butch H. from Weymouth, MA USA
Music Background: Pro Bassist Vocalist.

Works best when driven by a guitar or keyboard rather than using the key selection function, yes it hears the keyboard output as well as guitar output. The FAQ on the Mfgr's web site has a question about driving the unit with a bass guitar, the response was basically it might be possible. I can tell you it does and even with songs that contain minor chord changes and are in minor keys.

However, as the unit does not have pitch correction you must pay strict attention to singing precise melodies in order to supply your own pitch correction and avoid dissident harmonies.

Suggestion to the manufacturer. Develop a unit for bassist/vocalists with pitch correction and a second stomp switch to change between minor and major keys with just one stomp. I would have paid a higher price to get those features.

TC Helicon H1

By Amy from Li , NY
Music Background: Vocalist 20 years +

I use this in my Duo act. Since I don't play guitar I use it manually. I have to change the key and the harmony chords before each tune. Because its not reading the guitar chords, the harmonies do not alway work with my song. Its will make the wrong chord and even though I try every setting it won't correct. Since I cant use it on everything I want, I give it 3 stars. Other than that, when it works, it sounds pretty good. Better than paying another musician!

TC- Helicon Voice Tone H! --Needs a bit of work

By jwymer from Freehold, NJ
Music Background: Grammy Nominated writer/musician/vocalist

Love the simplicity of use….keeps it easy when trying to get simple voicing….works great with single voice and single guitar….but cannot use in a acapella setting….voicing don't sound even. The second voicing sounds tinny and echoy even with gain and tone adjusted….put through Fender Deluxe Amp to get guitar voicing in check….Other than that …great little gear!

Not Reliable: Multiple Failures and Repacements

By Sweetwater Customer

When this thing works, it works great and sounds pretty good. The problem is that I have had it replaced twice since I bought it due to complete failure and now, at the end of the warranty period, it has failed again.

I really wanted to like it and it adds a lot to live gigs, but when it goes down it takes the mic signal with it and you're left with no mic at all. Maybe ok for recording, but not reliable for gigging. I transport all electronics with great care and in cases, but after the original and 2 replacements I'm on the third one and they have all failed.

TC Helicon Voice Tone H1

By The B. from Mohawk Valley
Music Background: advanced amateur, unadvanced performer

Sounds great to me and is a H*** of a lot of fun. I get compliments from the audience (used subtlely), but not from my wife! She feels it sounds artificial. It is easy to use and does alI could want it to do EXCEPT it really needs a remote stomp. Now, I can turn it off and on for choruses, but then I have to lean down, pick it up and make adjustments for the next piece if I don't want the same harmony - all in front of the audience. It feels well made. It would be nice if it would work off the power in the mikes rather than needing a separate adapter and electrical connection. All in all, a good buy.

Oustanding value

By Jim G. from Long Island, NY
Music Background: Played in bands for 35 years.

It is everything I hoped it would be. You can set one or two harmonies at a 3rd or a 5th above and below and every possible combination...the harmonies are you own voice didgitally duplicated. The guitar tells the H1 what harmonies notes to sing...just great.
I sang "Nowhere Man" and "Teach Your Children" by myself in 3 part harmony! Just awesome....sound quality on the voices are very realistic.

Addition to review of Nov 8th

By Charlie from Buchanan Dam, TX
Music Background: church musician (5-string bass and 12-string guitar, as well as vocals).

I'm happy I didn't wait and get the rackmount! I've used this in church, and everyone's blown away by it. I'm stoked! The only thing I don't like is it doesn't have pedals to change presets, like switching from tight, two-part, surrounding harmonies to a single tight, low harmony on the next song, hence the 4.5 instead of 5. Other than taking a few seconds to make this kind of adjustment, I can't think of ANYTHING else I dislike about the H1. Thanks, TC-Helicon and thank you, Phil for setting me up with this monster!

The TC - Helicon H1

By Ron C. from Georgetown DE 19947
Music Background: I have been a performer in various venues for many years

I love my H1 and I'm having a blast with it. I get a lot of positive feedback from audiences on the vocal effects. It sure adds great variety for a soloist. However my review was due to either my inexperience or actual performance of the product. I miss the ability to double-track my voice at times. I also find the harmony effects often missing the intended chord I'm singing. I run my guitar through it and have set my gain properly and stay close to the mic but I still get "off" chords vocally and I'm not sure why. I'm going to try it through a keyboard to see how it responds.

Buy it!

By Charlie from Buchanan Dam, TX
Music Background: church musician (5-string bass and 12-string guitar, as well as vocals).

Although I DO wish I'd waited, saved enough money for the rack mount unit, this one does everything it says, does it well! One or two voices, above or below or split, loose or tight harmonies, keyed manually or from your instrument. I have no complaints about this unit at all.

Sounds Great.

By Eugene H. from Fort Payne, Al
Music Background: Church choir director

I had an old harminizer from the 1980s. It was just so so. The Telicon H1 is natural sounding. I do not play an instrument so I could not play with my vocal. I sing acapella and the H1 is right on key after I determine the key of my song. I really do enjoy singing and recording with this fab piese of equipment. Perfect harmony.

Wow, this little piece of magic is now a mainstay in my acoustic covers duo. It add s such dynamic depth to the songs we play. It's easiest to play with your guitar plugged in and it recognizing the key to harmonize based on the chords you play. Worth the price paid and would buy another in a heartbeat.

I really like the H-1. Anybody who has a solo act should check in to this. I will tell you how off key and pitchy you can get. I'm going to get the Tone Correct next and hopefully sound like I think I should. Great tool for anyone needing accompanyment that doesn't talk back. One of the few times that I can say I am really glad I bought a gadget.

Impressive

By Gary A. from Trinity, Texas USA
Music Background: Semi-Pro Musician, Hobbyist

I've only had the opportunity to gig with this once so far, but I'm liking it. My only minor problem was understanding the voicings control; the up arrows, down arrows. But I did get to field test it some and find out how best to use it, although I'm sure I will get better with it over time.

Quality seems great. It's very robust, doesn't seem to affect my guitar signal at all, and the mic preamp is very clean.
