Mind blown

By Kraig Kappler from 602 oak street Farmington Missouri on July 6, 2023

I would highly recommend it is surprising loud for 40 watts !. Has everything you want in compact amp. Lightweight portable with ease. Its that vintage JCM 800tone which I love . Boutique amps or nice and crisp clear sound.

VT40X with Legend 1058 Speaker

By Bill Robertson from Roswell Ga on March 10, 2023 Music Background: I have played guitar for 60 years; mostly for my own enjoyment now-a-days. . today. Seeking samll gigs.

I play jazz, mostly on a Heritage 575 archtop. I have a TomKat amp which was starting to give me trouble and they don't make them anymore. I bought the VT40X as a backup. It was the only hybrid amp with a 12A7X preamp, 10" speaker and DSP the same as the TomKat (but better because of its modeling capability). The VOX40X is a great amp and now the Tomkat is my backup amp. I exclusively model the 22w Deluxe Reverb clean channel, which is widely used for jazz, in addition to rock and county. I am achieving getting the tone I have been seeking rather than spending $ for the Fender.

The stock speaker is a nonstandard 5 ohms, and not up to par. I upgraded it with a Legend 1058, after doing a fare amount of research about which speaker to use. The cabinet's base reflex design is probably adequate for the stock speaker, but it constrained the Legend 1058. Eventually, after taking a deep breath, I core drilled four 1.5" diameter holes across the back of the cabinet and wow it made a huge difference - warm unconstrained lows. The Legend 1058 is used to being in open backed cabinet and now it can breath!

The VT40X acheives 40 watts of power because VOX uses a 5 ohm speaker which allows more current through the coil. ( Watts = Amps squared times the resistance.) The Legend 1058 is a conventional 8 ohm speaker, which reduces the current to 5/8 of what it was with the 5 ohm speaker, but when combined with the higher resistance of the 8 ohm speaker, results in 25 watts of output. I am OK with that since the Fender DR is 22 watts and both are plenty loud enough.

Awesome Amp

Loving this amp. So many options and sounds. Sounds amazing. I have yet to realize the full potential = but then again - that's most of the fun.

Keeps getting better !

I have been playing guitar for decades, and these are my favorite practice amps. I can get any sound I want out of this amp! Great amp! Great Value!

Vox amp

By Kip from Virginia on August 11, 2021 Music Background: Ex pro weekend warrior

If I had any negative comments it would be over come by the bang for buck of this unit. A good quality exterior and the foot pedal is metal (not included) . I have not dug deeply into programming but I don't need a bunch of amp models. It has effects and a tuner . Great for me to set in with a local duo. As far as wall warts go it's not a bad one. It's pretty loud but if you wanted more you could D I it off the headphone jack or microphone it.

Nice amp

Was just practicing my guitar on a 15W bass amp, and decided it was time for an upgrade. This amp is really cool, lots of sound options and it's very loud...my neighbors can confirm. Definitely a lot more fun to play my Strat on this, really brings out the full potential of the guitar.

I am just floored by the sound and features with this amp. Download the tone room app and a whole world of sounds becomes available! I purchased a demo and it was in perfect condition! Instructions are super easy to understand and controls are simple to navigate, especially when using the tone room app! I love this freakin amp!! So awesome and at a price point I am super happy with! As usual my man Corey is spot on and always there if needed. Sweetwater rocks!

A special thanks to my customer service rep Mike M. he has been awesome over the years thanks man.

Great Amp . Still going strong after 3 years.

By Mark McK from Coventry Township, OH on February 20, 2021 Music Background: Hobby Musician

I bought one of these in 2018. Still going strong . It is fun to have a pretty full array of effects at your fingertips , but I really just play clean with some reverb most of the time. The headphone jack works well. The power adapter is a bit odd and very fragile. 19Volt output. 12AX7 tubes are easy to find and replace. I like this amp so much , I bought an addition used one in need of TLC.

One of the best amps I've ever owned

By Jason from Minnesota on October 3, 2020 Music Background: Musician for 10 years

Outstanding amp. I would recommend it to anyone!! I use mine as a practice/live backup amp and it's almost every bit as good as my primary rig (PRS Archon w/ Orange 2x12). It's seriously mind boggling how sick this amp is for my room. Get one.

Great amp, great service.

Sweet amp for the money!

By Eric from Maryland on July 3, 2020 Music Background: Classic Rock

I bought this amp to replace a Fender Frontman amp (circa 2001) that died. It was either the VOX or the Marshall Code. I tried them both and went with the VOX for the following reasons: I liked not having to rely on the little LCD display for amp settings that the Marshall Code had. The VOX panel was more user friendly and straight forward. I also liked the fact that the VOX is hybrid (solid state or solid state + tube) and with the amp models included it makes the amp sound really awesome. It's a 40 W amp, so you can crank it up and it sounds good to a point as the speaker starts to max out (a beefier speaker would be better at higher volumes). I have the VOX paired with an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and the sound is really good using all amp models and effects. I have read reviews about amp noise, but have not experienced any of that, and it's been pretty clean. I haven't had a chance to use VOX's Tone Room software yet, but have it loaded on my iPad. I am really happy with this amp and it has all the modeling and effects that I need without having to add specific pedals. I also bought an extra tube (Mesa) just in case. Sweetwater was also awesome regarding the order, checking in regarding any questions about the order, and followup after I received the amp. It arrived pretty quickly and I had no issues out of the box (thanks Sweetwater!). For the money it's awesome!

Outstanding Sound

By Glenn Jackson from Austin, TX on June 23, 2020 Music Background: former professional musician now playing weekends for fun

I have historically been a snob about modeling amplifiers. I didn't like them at all. Until now, I had never heard one that sounded "real" to me. I took a chance on this amp because I have owned Vox amps before and always liked them, and the reviews were consistently positive. Being an older guy, I have gotten tired of lugging heavy tube amps around along with a pedal board that weighs almost as much as the amp. This little amp has solved all of those problems without having to sacrifice sound quality, which still comes first. I not only retired my larger amp, but also my pedal board, which I never thought I would do.

It's definitely loud enough to gig with in the places I play, and the headphone jack is great for practicing in the condo where I live so I don't have to piss off the neighbors.

Highly recommended.

Also, a big shout out to Sweetwater customer service, which has always taken great care of me and continued to do so with this order. Every piece of musical equipment I buy comes from them and will continue to do so. Great job guys!

VOX VT40X Amp

By Wes from on a farm in Iowa on November 19, 2019 Music Background: beginer

I love this amp. I had my mind set to buy a Fender amp, until I went to a store and listened to them. I just thought the VOX sounded clearer and brighter than the Fender modeling amp. Plus is was $ less. I just use it for practice at home. It is plenty load and could be easily be used in a small venue. Go for it! You will like it!!

The only problem I have with this amp is it"s smarter than me. It has more options than I can figure out. Sounds great and a lot of fun to mess with. A friend of mine tried it out and ordered his the same day. You will enjoy.

By Nehemiah Barshlomo on February 1, 2018

Absolutely love this amp. I upgraded to this amp from a Fender Champion 20 which was my first electric amp. The difference is incredible. Love the deep tones from this amp and I'm still experimenting with all the possible sounds. I play at home in an apartment and I can keep the output at a lower level but still get great sounds. The sound from this amp just incredible in my opinion. Definitely worth the investment. So many options to explore.

Best practice amp . This one here has a very incredibly beautiful sound . Clean or dirty . I can use all my guitars from my low end ones to my high end ones & it does me justice to the high courts !!! Its very easy to use . Whether you want to dig deep into it or just move around some knobs you are sure to be pleased . And when I say dig deep , that means either use a patch , change out the tubes or speakers ( in which you dont have to change any thing ) but what ever the case my be its still an awesome sounding practice amp & am not getting rid of mine for nothing . My only regret is that I wish would of gotten mine alot earlier instead of waiting so long . Best $... Ive ever spent !!!

Wow! Highly recommend

By Brad from Suwanee, GA on September 27, 2017 Music Background: Guitar Student

I bought the VOX VT40X amp about a year ago for my teenage son. I've played it some and thought it was a super amp. A few months ago I added Fender 68 Deluxe Reverb to my stable along with a Hot Rod Deluxe. After I found out what a wonderful amp the 68 was, I traded my Hot Rod to my son for the VT40X. I put the VT40X on an A/B switch with the 68. After fiddling with controls and doing a comparison, I could barely tell the difference between the 68 Bassman stack and the VT40X on the Bassman emulation. Sure I'm old and half deaf and I'm sure you really can tell the difference, but it is real close. The VT40X is a super amp for $250. If you want a really versatile amp for practicing, this is a good one. I plug my computer into it and play along with backing tracks. All of the amp emulations are good, and they are infinitely adjustable. I find this amp to be much better than the Mustang and Line 6 which I play on in guitar class.

Well worth it!

By P. Stack on April 4, 2017

All right I give this a five-star only because it's my preference and this is exactly what I was looking for. The current modeling amp I have now which is a line 6 75 watt spider 4. And it gives off of very muffled sound no matter how many times you mess with the controls it does not sound clean. I play a lot of thrash and speed metal but I also like to dabble in the Blues. The Vox has a very clean and Clear Tone to it that really lights up a room. Now the added bonus to it is the tone room app you can get on your iOS device or Android. Just make sure you have the right cables because I read a lot of reviews of people having trouble accessing it. It works just fine for me matter of fact I use my charging cable from my PlayStation 3 and it seems to work just fine. And it's a lot of fun in the tone room because there is an endless supply of amps and pedal sounds you can gather even create yourself. I've only dabbled in a little bit of it but like I said I cannot stop playing the clean tone on here it sounds fantastical! I was looking for something lightweight easy to carry around when I travel from time to time especially when I go to my buddies house it's a perfect amp for us to jam out with, and I don't have to Lug around this giant Line 6 anymore. I've only been playing guitar for a little over four years and I put a lot of work into it so I do know a thing or two about gear. I mean nothing sounds like a marshall stack Half Stack a great tube amp but plain and simple you can't look that thing around everywhere so what modeling amp works just fine. A plus Sweetwater did a great job once again for me

Best $ I Ever Spent

By Happy camper on January 26, 2017

I bought mine used but i had to leave a review somewhere. I've been playing for 15 years, but the past 10 I've been a giant gear snob and collected everything i could get my hands on. Tone chasing, we've all heard of it. Well I've owned over 50+ tube amps throughout the years and this my friends is the best sounding modeling amp I've ever played. Better than the kemper and axe fx if you ask me. Better than bias and amplitube or any of the vst modelers. It has the organic tube feel, especially noticeable when you dial back the volume knob. The only downside is that you have to hook it up to another device to access the majority of your amp models in vox's "toneroom" program. They could have made them all available with the 3 stage preset button no one will ever use. And some control variables are only accessible through the program as well. You can at least save 8 of your favorite tones to foot switchable channels. No effects loop or extension cab output. Still an outstanding amp and probably the last amp I'll ever buy (maybe I'll get the 100w version) i have 7 big name amps that are currently up for sale now because this thing covers it all. Whoever said this is a beginner's amp is downright crazy. Go buy one, take it home, mess around with it for a week. Return it if you don't like it, but i guarantee you'll fall in love like i did. There's only happy endings with this amp. Hats off you to vox. This one flew way under the radar. Whoever doesn't try one of these now is going to kick themselves later

Love it

By Sweetwater Customer on December 31, 2016

There is a lot of amp here for the money!
I think it sounds good: none of the videos do justice to the "in person" sound of this amp. My expectations of the VT40X were realistic and they were surpassed when I tried it out! For practice and a whole lot of fun: THIS is the amp. It's so inexpensive you can add it to your collection just for the hell of it and you won't be let down!

There is no better amp value than the VT40X on the market today. The sounds are spot on electronically mapped reproductions of really high end and boutique amps and the power of it will knock your socks off. The previous reviewer suggests it's tube muddy. I don't agree. It's one of the best sounding amps I've ever heard. The fact that it sells for under 500. is just shocking. The overtones, feedback characteristics, the sustain and the authentic response of the amp makes playing a joy.

Great amp for anything.

By Loren Knight from Burbank, CA on February 21, 2016

I'm not concerned with such things as "Does it really sound like this or that." I do my own thing and I want it to sound good. I'm getting great sound out of this amp. I really like most of the presets even. I just got a Gretsch Jet Baritone guitar and the combo blew my mind.
This certainly gets loud enough to play small to medium venues so I really thing the VT40X is the choice middle ground. Working pros playing medium to large venues maybe should go with the 100w but those venues have PAs so the 40w could be mic'ed.
One little thing that might be helpful. I found that when changing between amp models the volume jumps to a preset level and not where the volume is physically set. But a quick jiggle of the volume knob resets it where it should be. So I just change the amp model and juggle the volume know in one move before playing a note and there is never a surprise.
Super pleased with this. I'm going to garage sale my Marshall Valvestate 20.

Upgraded from VT40+,

By Mike from Fairfield County, CT on January 16, 2016 Music Background: Hobby

I've only had this for a day and used it for a few hours so far to get the hang of the settings, but so far I'm glad I decided to sell my old VT+ and get this one as I'm trying to get back in the swing of things again. Equally important, I can't say enough positive things about Sweetwater and Jordan who helped me with this order. In fact, they were incredibly helpful in fixing a UPS error and keeping me out of a bind. I live close to NY where there are Sam Ash and GCs all over, but I'm glad I ordered from here and will do it again.

Here are some initial thoughts:
- You really need to download the tone room app to get the most out of this. So many more models there and presets. Without this functionality I wouldn't have bought it based on the initial models.
- you need to buy a separate USB camera adaptor plug and if you connect it to iPhone/iPad a separate Apple camera adaptor to to use the software.
- the instructions aren't great for tone room. Total trial and error. I still don't know which presets I can change permanently or if I can only save them as user settings, and if so can you adjust the prameters that way.
- I Think the models sound better on he VTX and definitely like the way you use the pedals.

By Steve Waite from Shelton CT on January 6, 2016 Music Background: Playing for 40 years and loving every nanosecond of it

Sweetwater delivered this amp today - that was fast! - and after several hours of jamming with it, I have to say it's one of the best little practice amps I've ever had the pleasure of using. The combination of tubes with state of the art digital modeling provides an array of great tones to please any guitarist. The Dumble tone is terrific - both clean and distorted. The other amp tones are authentic and sound great too. The reverb and assorted effects all sound good as well. I haven't used the modeling software yet but I'm looking forward to creating custom tones with my iOS devices. The Aux In jack is sweet to use to jam along with an iOS (or Android or some other) device. In summary, I'm deeply impressed with Vox VT40X amp and would encourage guitarists looking for a great little practice amp to check one out. At $249, it seems like a bargain.

Great small amp

By brian from FL on January 20, 2023

Bought the amp in 2021 and although it was mainly for a practice amp it actually is strong enough for band gigs. Modeling is really good. I dont use the onbaord effects because I generate those from another source. An effects loop for that is the only thing missing

Excellent amp for the Money!

By Matt from Richmond, VA on August 24, 2021 Music Background: B.A. in Music, Worship Leader & Multi-Instrumentalist

I have owned tube amps for a number of years, the most recent being an AC15, but sold them a few years ago when my life situation changed and I was traveling a lot. I'm finally getting back into playing more again at my church, and needed a new amp but didn't have the cash for a new AC15. I also didn't want a complete solid-state amp and found this sweet little amp for under $. I normally don't buy gear without trying it, but gave it a shot after watching the videos and reviews. The portability of this lightweight amp was one of the big selling points as well.

It's not a tube amp, but offers a lot. Despite it not being a true tube amp, the 12AX7 preamp tube and power amp modeling is fantastic and it feels and responds almost like the real thing. As a big fan of VOX, I love the AC30TB setting, which sounds great. This amp also really kicks for being a 10" speaker. It has plenty of low end, but you may have to compensate the EQ to get it to sound more like 12" speakers if that's what you're used to. The other settings, from Fender Cleans to Marshall stacks are really good too. The effects are decent, and certainly get you by, but I'll probably still get some stompboxes later on to get some higher-quality effects.

My one recommendation to anyone who buys the amp is to pick up a USB cable and hook it up to the Vox ToneRoom app, either on your phone or computer. This makes a WORLD of difference into the customizability of the amp and effects models and gives access to controls and models that aren't available on the physical amp to really dial in the tone. I liked the amp before hooking it up to the app, but REALLY liked the amp after digging into the app.

If you're looking for a versatile, mid-powered amp, that won't break your bank or budget, I can't recommend this enough.

Awesome amp!!

Great sounds with some limits

By Corb from AL on January 22, 2020

Found a great deal on a slightly used VTX 40. First time Vox buyer. At first I was a little underwhelmed as the stock speaker sounded a little thin on the lows. Once I used the Tone Room, I found the presets were heavy on the mid boost patches. Once I loaded up some of the other patches, the amp really came to life. The tubes give you good break up and produce warm cleans. I have no idea how close the models sound to the real thing, but I also wouldn't we want to spend the $$ to find out. The effects sound good and are easy to use. It doesn't have the full range of effects as a Boss Katana, but you can control the parameters better on the amp. It also had less noise with the overdriven models than the Katana. You get a wide range of amp models that all sound noticably different. Getting the footswitch is a must and you must RTFM to get the maximum use out of it. It's plenty loud for jamming and is easy to carry.

There are a few things Vox could improve on. The lack of a standard IEC plug and instead using what you might power a laptop with is kinda lame. If you lost it, you are SOL. The 100 has an IEC, the smaller units do not. You are limited to 2 effects + reverb. Not a huge deal but an insert like you see on a mixer would be cool as would a DI out. If an extension cab capability is important to you, look elsewhere. The on-board tuner is Ok, but not the easiest thing to use. The power button is right next to the power output knob and sometimes you can turn it off. Not sure why Vox didn't make it a switch on the back.

Jazz Upgrade...Update

By VonBach on August 11, 2019 Music Background: American

I've had the VOX VT40X for about a year now and LOVE it. I've been playing softer, jazzier music and thought that a speaker upgrade might be in order. And so it was. I installed an Eminence Lil' Buddy and turned this amp into a really sweet box! Doesn't matter whether I'm playing my PRS Santana solid body or my Ibanez AM93 semi hollow body, the tone is what I've been looking for. It's smooth as silk, but you can still get it to bite like rabbid dog when you want. It's clear as a bell, even when you roll off the tone control... it just gets warmer, not muddier. I'm a fan of that Lil Buddy and coupled with the VT40X it's perfect.

really happy

By steven conroy on August 19, 2018 Music Background: 30 yrs bass player and guitarist

when i first bought this amp i was really dissapointed the controls on top i found hard to get the sound i wanted but once i found out about toneroom i realised just how good this amp is i had no idea it was a modeling amp i rushed myself when i bought it due to swapping from bass to guitar i wanted to just jam with a mate on drums at the time.the guy at the music shop has always looked after me over the past 30 yrs so im happy he actually did me right with this.. i still do want a fender red knob twin reverb but i have to say this amp for its price drop is impressive im actually in no rush to get the fender amp...i now use this amp in a band i play in we play thrash/punk and some grunge/metal and i find for a small to meduim jam room this amp kicks butt it has alot of power and even got some bottom end which i did not think it would deliver.if you use tone room u will find it easy to use even for us old schoolers. i was never impressed with the idea modeling amp but it does cut it ... the only downfall with this amp is you cant hook up another speaker .this to me is a great loss the amp does sound really good and impressive but it would have sounded much better as a twin speaker.but you do still have the option too mic up the amp which is great for small gigs.

Great Amp, Great place to buy it.

First off, I must commend Matt and the Tech folks here at Sweetwater for dealing quickly and effectively with the problems I encountered. The first VT40X I received was damaged in shipping. Matt immediately cross-shipped a new unit which arrived the next day. BUT, that 2nd amp sounded bad, scratchy highs and very weak bass. Matt and the Tech folks responded without missing a beat and sent me a THIRD VT40X which sounds GREAT! I have read reviews of the VTX series that indicate that some of the amps out there have a tone problem, like the 2nd amp I received. But when you get a good one, it's AWESOME. It's the perfect small amp. I have 45 years of playing under my belt. I've done the pedal boards, 2 x 12s, 4 x 10s, singles, doubles, and most of the big brand names. This little amp has all the effects I need, built-in, it has a huge range of tones from very clean to very mean, and it can get LOUD. It has plenty of bottom, top, and everything in between. I also purchased the VFS5 5 button footswitch. With 8 programable presets, compressor, chorus, delays, reverbs, and more, all built-in, Tone Room software library,.... AND....it has a 12AX7 TUBE in the preamp section along with bias switching and an A/AB amp configuration switch. I really like the Clean settings on this baby! It won't break your bank, and it's light enough that it won't break your back. The place that Vox chose to cut corners was in the cabinet material...and I agree...I think it's better to sacrifice the wood cabinet than the tone. So, the price is perfect, the amp is perfect, and Sweetwater goes above and beyond in customer satisfaction. Buy it...HERE.

Vox VT40x

By B. V. Scott from Houston, Tx on March 7, 2018 Music Background: Rock / Country Classics, Jazz Standards

I am revising my rating up, to 4.5 stars on the star meter. The VT40x is a very warm sounding amp with the one 12AX7 tube in the pre-amp section. The effect settings were very frustrating for me, seemingly moving targets on some days, and the volume level will change dramatically as the Amp Models selections are changed as noted by others. The user just has to take notice. Having more or less resolved most of that, I am very pleased with the warm jazz tones that I get with the 4 reverb choices plus the two pedal effects. My rating should be 4.5 stars.

Outstanding

By Frankie Davis from Roosevelt, UT on November 4, 2017 Music Background: Vocalist, Guitarist

I am extremely surprised with the sound that this amp produces. Paired with the Tone Room, I can reproduce nearly any tone and effect that every other amp produces. The only things I dislike about it are the handle placement(which makes carrying it awkward when your hands are full) and the input location for the power source which can easily be damaged when plugged in if not careful. I love this amp though. It's great for cleans, shredding, and even low drop tunings. I may just purchase another one to keep at my house.

Incredible Tone

By Will R. from Clearfield, UT on September 30, 2017 Music Background: Session musician, songwriter, artist, tone junkie, guitar enthusiast.

I bought this amp because i though the idea of a tube preamp with solid state effects was a pretty good idea. With that being said, this is the best practice amp I've ever owned. The tone is exactly what you want. I honestly didn't think the tube would make a lot of difference but i was mistaken. The tube creates a warm, thick, and rich tone that makes you want to keep playing, even the effects sound better. You can immulate a lot of high quality amps that sound unmistakable. Whether you play metal, blues, rock, or anything else, this amp can do it. Plugging in the macbook and using the Tone Room editor unlocks the true ability of this amp. You can literally do anything. This is the amp that gives me the tone that I've looked for for a long time. My only issue is that there needs to be a small display that tells you what patch your on. You can use the tone room to assign onboard presets, but you literally have to connect your computer every time, or remember what patch you put where. Thats my only problem with it. Well worth the money, and after using it for a while, i would still buy it. Vox hit a home run with this one.

Best Overall at Covering Most Everything

By Doobster6 from Exton, PA on June 14, 2017 Music Background: Retired ex-Rocker still noodling along.....

I currently own six modeling amps covering practice-recording to small gigs. These include (in no particular order): A Fender SuperChamp X2 head-ext cab; Line 6 Amplifi 150; The Vox VT40x; Yamaha THR10; Yamaha THR10x and Marshall Code 25. None of the are perfect for everything, but the Vox comes the closest overall. In a few nutshells:
- The Fender probably has the best tones overall owing to its use of preamp and power tubes with its digital modeling section. But you can't save complete patch settings nor does it have any footswitchable memory banks. Its tones also sound best at loudness levels above conversational.
- The Yamahas are both acoustic-physics defying little practice amps and probably good recording interfaces. If you want inspiring tone at near whisper volumes, get one of these.
- The Amplifi is an incredible tonal chemistry lab that sounds awesome but in fact, has too many tweakable dimensions and easily gets overwhelming. The Bluetooth implementation (which is the only way you can fully control it) is also sketchy and so it's not a reliable tool.
- The Marshall Code is simpler, its crunch and gain tones are spot on, Bluetooth works flawlessly although everything is accessible from the amp, and it has footswitchable access to 32(?) of the 99 tones that can be programmed into the amp. But its clean tones kinda suck though, so it's not an all-arounder.
- The Vox has a tube in its circuit and so it sounds pretty sweet. Has great clean tones and, with some patch tweaking effort, also produces awesome gain and blues tones that can rival the Marshall. It also can use a separate footswitch too. It can be used to cover the widest range of tones from country to jazz to metal, and at neighbo-friendly practice levels. It's three effects are arranged in a potentially limiting arrangement though, so you might need to add an outboard pedal or two.

All modeling amps today use much better CPUs than in bygone days and sound awesome. The ones that incorporate actual tubes usually sound warmer and 'tubier'. Some of these cost less than the price of a boutique pedal. It's kinda nuts really. You gotta love technology.

Great amp

By PAUL GIFFORD from Massachusetts on June 22, 2016

I'm only reviewing here cause I read the ones here b4 I bought and must admit it's very right this is a great amp for mony varity of tones easily changed without Hassel b sure read functions manual it's a piece cake .only con on this one is tone room you probley need upgrade phone b4 you get in a new Apple should go but ck the tech sheet or customer support if your getting for tone room .I say still great variety with out tone room and mini port may slow you down but inverters on amazon.a couple of aux 1/4 "would make this amp unbeatable but they say you can port a pa speaker in if you want step up the v but it's just great the way it is well worth mony

Change the tube.

By H Eckles from Colorado on February 12, 2016 Music Background: Hobby

I love the variety of settings and the foot switch. Played it for 3 days then it sounded shallow. what to do? I had some left over 12AX7, changed the tube and it was better than new. I would buy another, I like it. The tube cost one star.

Quality sound for a good price.

By James Johnson from Anchorage, AK on February 22, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist of Greenhouse (Alaska)

I've now used this amp to jam with my friends, record an EP, and play several live shows (indoors AND outdoors). It's very capable and has yet to get in my way, even with a lack of an output jack. It's been easy to mic up to get the same effect. The amp does have a strange issue (maybe it's working as designed) where the volume will change significantly between effect channels. This hasn't interfered with my ability to use the amp in gig/jam/recording settings, but I do have to make adjustments to the volume when jamming at home. I recently built myself a pedalboard and do not use the on-board effects that often, and this amp still (2 years later) offers quality sound in a relatively small and reliable package.

Cosmetic and Ergo Issues

By Mike on June 19, 2019

I would easily have given this amp a 5 for quality and sound. Effects are wonderful ! LOVE IT

My three minor complaints are purely ergonomic and cosmetic.

1. The handle configuration makes it awkward to carry this amp . They should have placed the strap handle on the side in the center vs top and off center and off balance.

2. VOX logo in bright gold is ugly and cheap looking .

3. NO place to store or wrap up the power cord .

Of course this is not any mark against Sweetwater , who are great to work with

Vox VT40x

By B. V. Scott from Houston, Tx on February 27, 2018 Music Background: Guitar Player but unfortunately not a Guitarist after a million practice hours

My criteria for buying this amp were: good tone, weight ~ 22 lbs or less (20.94 lbs), medium power, reasonable portability. I have other ss Fender amps that I am reasonably ok with, and a Marshall 100W head which I have no real opportunities to use at this point, sadly I do say. My Rock & Roll dreams far exceeded any real talent or ability that I ever had, not a novice, fair, but not pro quality.

I now aspire to play jazz standards, which was the reason for choosing this amp. With the Amp Models knob set on "User A", I do get a good, warm jazz tone. The other settings are: Gain - 11:00 (minimum for a clean sound), Treble - 1:00, Middle - 2:00 / 3:00, Bass - 1:00 / 2:00, Volume - 5:00. I would say that "User A" could well be labeled "Jazz". Not sure why the Brits would not have labelled it that way.

I do not make any adjustments with the Bank push button or the 4 channel banks. The deeper you go into the banks, the more distortion you get, which is not the sound that I am looking for.

The operating manual could be better written with respect to the essential Effects Section - Pedal 1, Pedal 2, and Reverb, which I have to say was the biggest problem for me. It is just not crystal clear.

There is this statement, directly from the operating manual: "An effect type LED will illuminate to indicate your selection. Hold down an effect selection button to turn it off and turn off the effects." Good to know how to turn them off, but how can you be sure what you turned on. These effect buttons come in three colors - red, orange, green. After two months with this amp, I am still not sure what these colors are telling me.

I do know that I need for all three Effects ~ Pedal 1, Pedal 2, and Reverb to be green. Of the combination of things that you can do to get them green, not all, or any combination will work. For Pedal 1, I press the LED and select Comp (compression), the 1st in the group of 4. This LED will blink red, LEAVE it blinking RED. For Pedal 2, I scroll down to Delay, no. 4 in the group of 4. It will blink Green. For Reverb, I select Room which is no. 1 in the group. It will blink Red. Then, press this LED again to get it to Green. I then press the Pedal 1 LED and will become Green. The middle LED, Pedal 2 will automatically stop blinking Green and will go to solid Green. With all effects Green, I have the warm jazz tone that I am looking for although I do not understand why it has to be done in this way.

I have noticed that other methods will work but other methods will also not work. In my left-brain, it just does not seem very logical, and for a while it was so hap-hazard. Millenials love this almost random sort of thing. I don't. Minus one star for a less than clear operating manual that took me nearly two months to sort out. Reading and re-reading the manual really did not illuminate much of anything.

I am a jazz guy now with respect to my own guitar playing for the most part, but am very happy that The Cars and The Moody Blues are finally allowed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Beyond over-due for both incredible bands. Different Amp Models setting for The Cars ~ Let the Good Times Roll, and the Moody Blues, to a lesser degree. I will be in Cleveland in April.

Brian Dillon with Sweetwater is a great guy to work with. He will help you every way reasonable to ensure that you will be pleased with your order. Minus one star for the operating manual on the down side. Not the perfect amp but could have been a 4.5, and don't be questioning my math.

Excellent Modeling Amp

By Mike from RI on June 28, 2016 Music Background: Amateur musician

Having played the Mustang and the Code, I much prefer the VT40x to either of those. The usability and tone are much better in my opinion. You can program presets or bypass them and just use the amp like you would normally. This is very useful when you just want to plug and play. The amp is very responsive to playing nuances and the EQ works very well when adjusting the different frequencies. The on-board effects sound good too. Not as many options as a Mustang, but there's enough here to make it versatile. You can make changes on the fly, which is something other amps really struggle with. I think this particular model is ideal for bedroom, jams, and potentially shows if you're mic'd up. I bought it as a backup/practice amp and I am happy with that decision so far. Very light and portable. I couldn't tell you if the preamp tube is a gimmick or if it really does have a hand in the tone-shaping, but I can tell you this amp sounds great. Could be that Vox has a lot of experience with modeling and competitors do not. I would highly recommend this amp.

Tube Snob

By Mario from DE on April 24, 2016 Music Background: Pro

Change the speaker ! My Sweetwater rep will tell you, I purchase and return lots of amps. Most haven't cut it for the money spent. I was ready to return this amp but felt the issue was with the speaker. Opened it up and sure enough, cheap, thin speaker with hard paper dust cap (adds top end fizz). Purchased an Eminence Ragin Cajun and viola, success! Totally transformed the amp. One of the best modeling software I've heard since Marshalls Soft Tube Technology, but a bit warmer. Shocker as the Marshall amp I am comparing to is the JMD which was tube output. What I love is that the controls work as they should. Crank the treble and mids on the Fender models and the gain is increased. Cut back the bass to tighten the sound, or crank it to add low end aggressiveness.
Crank the gain and volume with the power low on the Vox models and you get great dirty sounding glassy chime.
Of course it doesn't have the dimensional depth that a tube amp has, but the sound and feel is pretty darn close.
Make sure you access the Vox Tone Lounge Software before settling on the sound, Lots to tweak that is not available on the amp itself. My rating is cut due to the crappy speaker.

Lots of buzz

By Sweetwater Customer on June 30, 2019

I"m relatively new to guitar (less than 1.5 years) this amp has had large amounts of feedback and buzz since the day i got it. Granted i have no idea what to do to fix this. Otherwise has a great amount of settings and features.

Decent but muddy

By Bryan on February 22, 2016

It's an okay modeling amp. The tube brings less mojo than you would expect. The settings are easy to use and understand. The sound is muddy however. as the distortion increases it sounds like damp cardboard box. Not too impressed. But again... not horrible, just doesn't live up to the recent hype I have seen.
