This is the Mic for Violin

By Richard Schweitzer from Dalton, MA on December 13, 2020 Music Background: Musician, drums & percussion, live sound and recording engineer

Can't get the violin sound you need? Stop searching. This is the mic.

We have a live stage - Guitar, keys, violin, cello, drums, vocals and stage monitors. I have been struggling with obtaining a clean signal from the violin (and cello) since I took over live sound for this band. But research and discussion with my Sweetwater rep, all roads pointed to the DPA 4099.

PROS:1) Picks up the natural sound of the violin. 2) Has a smooth frequency response. I pulled a little 1k and 3.5 k out. 3) Clips on quickly and is easily positioned and stays there. 4) Far superior to other dynamic or condenser mics I have used. Excellent gain before feedback. This is useable gain and is just enough to pull it above the stage volume. 5) Records exactly what you hear. So, it is useable for post production. 6) Allows the musician to be mobile (she loves that!) CONS: 1) Even though the cardioid pickup pattern is narrow and it has better gain, it still picks up stage volume no matter where you position this mic. But it picks up the violin so well, that live mixing and post production is easier.

Recommendation: Get this mic.

The GOLD Standard in microphones for Strings

By Dani Munoz from Los Angeles, CA on November 17, 2020 Music Background: Audio Engineer

There are plenty of reasons why so many of the top engineers still trust the 4099 for recording and live performances of string instruments. It's the only microphone out there that will give you the flexibility for perfect placement and crystal-clear capture of such complex and sonically rich instruments. I've tried just about any other option out there and the answer is always the 4099. I wouldn't bother with anything else. Even if you get a cheaper option you will eventually end up with this microphone. So, save yourself time and headaches. Just get it.

Perfect

Amazing mic!

By Anissa Burnett from North Carolina on June 13, 2019 Music Background: Oldtime/bluegrass fiddle for 16 years; fiddler for The Burnett Sisters Band.

Honestly, this is the best sounding mic I have ever used on my fiddle for live sound. No distortion, easy to use. I am completely spoiled now and don"t want to use anything else for performing! Highly recommend this mic. Plus Sweetwater has amazing customer service... and who doesn"t want candy?
