Amazing Little Microphone

By Mohamed on June 3, 2022 Music Background: Drummer

I use this mic on my toms, super clear and clean sound, one of the best microphones I've ever used .. very natural and responsive, you can't go wrong with DPA!!

Many advantages, but not ideal tone.

I want to be clear that this review is for the 4099 as it applies to brass instruments, and not for the microphone as a whole. The 4099 is an incredible tool, and it's quite possibly the best microphone out there for recording and amplifying string instruments in a live setting.

There's one very big advantage to the DPA in that it's clipped on to the instrument. It's very rare for musicians to stay in one place during a live performance; when you place a mic on a stand, you have to accept that your sources will end up off-axis, changing the tone and worsening the S:N ratio. The 4099 has great rejection of bleed and makes separation a breeze.

However, I don't think that a clip-on condenser (of any kind) is the best choice for brass instruments. Placing an SDC this close to the instrument results in a very bright, strident sound that needs a lot of EQ to tame. Dynamic and ribbon microphones are much better suited to this genre, specifically those with a dip in the high and high-mid frequencies to soften the harshness of close-mic'd brass.

I'd recommend this mic to performers, as it takes away the need to concentrate on playing into the mic. However, if you're looking to use this microphone for live concert (or live session) recording, I'd recommend putting it on a guitar, violin, cello, or bass instead, and using an M88, M160, MD441 or R84 for the brass.
