We drummers love the feel of wood under our fingers. From wood shells and wood hoops to our favorite wooden rods, mallets, and sticks. The Vic Firth VicKick VKB5 brings the familiar sensitivity of maple wood to a high-performance bass drum beater for real wood feel underfoot. The Vic Firth VicKick BKB5 features a large-bore beater shaft of real hard maple to balance weight and response all the way up and down the playing surface. At the business end of the VKB5 sits a low-profile 1.75" felt beater head that is perfectly weighted with the maple shaft to give you a balanced feel from toe to stroke. This puts full dynamic control in the player's pedal, for fast and sensitive feathering to rock 'n' roll beater buries. All told, the VicKick BKB5 from Sweetwater brings to the table an organic response and level of control that is hard to come by in other beaters. Best of all, it's compatible with any standard kick drum pedal.
You gotta want the sound
This beater sounds fantastic, and feels really good to play. Nice balance. I think it's easier to get those 60's & 70's bass drum tones from a more solid beater, and this does the trick. Sometimes I want the feel of something like a wood beater, but I needed something that was just a bit softer, so as to avoid poking holes in my BD which has no patch. This product is a nice middleground. It's much harder than a standard felt beater (and thus has more punch/attack), but nowhere near as harmful as using a wood beater.
The weight is fantastic, and it feels great. It's not a "workhorse" beater -it sits on my shelf for the most part- but... every once in a while it sounds fantastic for a particular setup, so I love it!
