Remo Ambassador Vintage Coated Drumhead - 14 inch Reviews

14" Coated Drumhead with 7.5-mil and 3-mil Plies

Today's Remo Ambassador is the undisputed king of the batter heads. But for cats who want something a little less modern - something a little more Ringo on Ed Sullivan - there's the Remo Vintage Ambassador drumhead. This 2-ply head is faithful to the very first Weatherking Ambassador from 1957 with 7.5-mil and 3-mil films. The added thickness and layering make Remo Vintage Ambassadors fatter and more controlled than modern As, but lighter and more sensitive than coated Emperors. The added ply also results in better durability. If you're like Sweetwater drummers and had been waiting for a drumhead option between the Ambassador and Emperor series, the Remo Vintage Ambassador is your chance to score that classic sound.

Excellent

By JD from SC

I bought this head for my Ian Paice Signature Pearl Sensitone. It has just the right projection and feel.I usually stick with a medium tension on batter and a medium high for the resonant.I'm really happy with this choice for this particular drum.

Exactly what I wanted

By JTE
Music Background: Amateur Drummer

I bought a set of the (10" 12" 14") for the toms on my 20 year old Gretsch kit. I didn't know what to expect. I'd tried a few different heads before, like the UV2, EC2S, and Hydraulic from Evans. However, I'd never tried something this thin before and I'd never tried Remo on this particular kit.

So I put em on and tuned em up and wow they are perfect. They pretty much do exactly what they say, they let the drum sing, but the two ply construction gives a little damping. To me, these toms have never sounded better!

Perfect on the right drum.

By Sweetwater Customer

I put these on the batter side of a 12x7 rack tom and 14x14 floor tom, both maple, and a Ludwig brass Supraphonic snare. It sounded great on the snare and floor tom. Just the right amount of added warmth and sustain control, while still allowing the drum to sing. Exactly what I was looking for. However, on the 12" tom it sounded dreadful. Dead, lifeless, like hitting a cardboard box. I couldn't believe how bad it sounded. I replaced it with a regular Coated Ambassador and all is well.

It seems Remo has intentionally left some air between the two plies on this head, for a dampening effect. From my experience, this design works well on floor toms, metal snares, and other slightly unruly drums. On smaller drums that need to ring freely to be heard, it may not work as well. If it mates well with a given drum, the result is a fatter, warmer, mellower version of an Ambassador and sounds great. If it's not a good match, it's the deadest sounding head I've ever heard.
