Excellent tool with some limits

By Andan from Chico, California
Music Background: Singer-songwriter, band leader, pro sound, local brewery sound coordinator

I own all three of the UI mixers. Started with a Ui16 in 2016, added a Ui24R in 2019, and completed the set with a Ui12 for small casual gigs. I've done over 400 shows between them.

The 12 and 16 do have inferior preamps, but keeping input gain below +30db keeps them quiet, even with phantom power, in the real world of live audio. Understand your gain staging and you can get great mixes with plenty of final output.

The connectivity issues disappear completely with a decent dual-band external router and proper addressing. I use older Netgear units that are plentiful. I have a backup/restore file that lets me clone the settings in a couple of minutes.

The anti-feedback system is great once you understand how to use it. Basically, the computer will ring out monitors in seconds if you run the fader up and down quickly so that the honks and squeaks are very brief. Very wise to double-check your main and monitor eq profiles during final setup.

Recording and playback to and from USB sticks is really useful, from live captures of the FOH mix to break music playback.

Good until you NEED it to work.

By Ian

Been using this unit for about a year, mostly for open mic nights. Works well (with an iPad Mini 4), but has occasional WiFi drop-outs and "Connecting...." messages. Until last night....
Running sound for a national artist playing a solo acoustic set. Perhaps it was the number of people in attendance (and their cell phones/wifi signals, etc) but the UI12 disconnected and would not reconnect to the iPad. WiFi was on, tablet was connected to it, but the mixer screen would not load and timed out at least a dozen times. I tried everything; disconnecting WiFi, restarting the iPad; nothing worked. I can only assume that a reboot of the main unit may have worked, but killing the sound in the middle of a performance is usually frowned upon. Luckily, this was a simple solo acoustic gig and I already had the sound dialed in pretty well. But had I needed to actually make adjustments, mute effects, etc, I'd have been screwed. At least the default of the unit is to keep running at the last known settings, but this show went on for 45 minutes with NO control over the mixer. Unacceptable. I love wireless mixing, but I'll be ditching this one for something more reliable.

Crap that cannot be fixed

By Robert from Louisiana
Music Background: DJ,sound engineer

My girlfriend bought this for me for Christmas, she bought it from here ,do not buy this unit or the ui16, both models are plagued with really bad mic pre amps, extreamly noisy and if you need to use phantom power the noise level increases, been reading on the audio forumes and it seems that this problem has been going on for over ,2 years now ,it would make you think that soundcraft would have got the problem fixed by now,go look at other brands of mixers because I do not recommend anyone wasting money on this product

Great for My Use

By Sweetwater Customer

I use this mixer primarily for relatively small gatherings. It's quick and easy to setup. I can attend a dinner where there is a speaker(s) and/or 1- 5 entertainers. I can set it up without having to run cables across the floor where they'd be in the way. Then I can sit anywhere in the room and control the audio without being obvious. It works great.

Awesome gui, poor sound

By Periklis from Greece

A very intuitive piece of equipment that makes everything else look obsolete . It's a pity that it's audio performance is poor. It sounds dull and plastic. Tried hard to improve its performance through several tweaks but nothing serious happens. I really hope it's performance will be improved because such developments show the way to Future possibilities.

WiFi Beware!

By Wayne from LA, Calif

I purchased a Ui12 to augment IEM network because of the guitar amp emulation. The emulation is quite nice and exceeds our needs. The other features are great and I agree with the other favorable reviews.

Some quirks.
1) The "cute" physical package. Great on stage, but no way to incorporate into a rack.
2) Scrolling. I'm an analog mixer and detect the digital boards use of layers. So, the Ui series with left right scrolling seemed like a good idea. Not. Scrolling is both imprecise and slow. With the small screen that cannot reasonable span all input channels + aux + effects + groups + line & player inputs, scrolling is not efficient. Using "layers" might be an improvement.
3) Limited effects channels. There are only 3, dedicated: reverb, delay, and chorus. That's it. A fourth, a 2nd reverb channel would be very handy.
4) Security. WiFi client mode. The mixer will not connect to a dedicated network if it does not broadcast SSID. That is potentially a security problem. Hotspot, access point, allows SSID to be hidden. However, the Hotspot mode will accept any domain with a valid domain extension. I tried 11 different extensions, they all worked.
5) Support: buy from Sweetwater!!! Their support guys are great. On the other hand, Soundcraft's support for this product is bad. After spending 2 days to iron out WiFi client mode issues, I indicated that the unit seems to be defective and would like to get it replaced. That was the last I heard from Soundcraft. As a result of working with Sweetwater, discovered the SSID broadcast issue. So, beware.

Bottom line, after working with Soundcraft, and if it weren't for the amp emulation, I would go with brand XR.

Soundcraft Ui12 is the bomb!

By Charles G. from Wewahitchka,Florida
Music Background: Playing professional from 1970 to 2000 then doing weekends since!

I bought the digital mixer to condense some equipment use in small area venues. After going from analog to digital, I've come to learn the ease in setup and all the great features involved in the small but mighty Soundcraft Ui12. I do weekend gigs by myself using keyboards, guitars, vocals and background tracks, and the Ui12 fits my bill to the "T". My time is limited for setup due to having a normal daytime job and running from there to the venue. The Ui12 is easy and fast to get up and running and all my settings are preset for each venue I play. Great product!

Soundcraft Ui12

By CJ from Midwest
Music Background: Drummer turned sound engineer

I utilize this mixer with my smaller venues or when I am in the mood to enjoy the freedom to walk about with my device. Most of the drop out issues are really just other devices trying to access the built-in wifi router. It is possible the other user reviews may be experiencing that problem when they don't secure the router from outside world. Follow the same WIFI security protocols and you can avoid having any signal interruptions.
Another strange thing that I failed to realize is that when you set up amp modeling its important to remember to reset them amp modeling to "None" if you want to plug in a microphone. That was my "Duh" moment.
Overall a great addition to anybody's sound gear.

Soundcraft Ui12

By Pro S.
Music Background: Band Engineer

I own a small sound company and toured as a BE and have worked with many national Blues Acts as a BE.
I find this units software to be very intuitive and easy to use. Make sure you do the latest firmware
update from Soundcraft. I did purchase an 8db boost TP Link antenna and range was increased greatly with this.
You can of course hard wire an external wireless router via the ethernet port. This unit did not hand out an IP for hard wire ethernet connection so I had to create a static IP on the laptop in the range of the default IP of the hotspot. I did notice the noise people talked about when engaging
phantom power. The noise floor dropped on phantom power when a phantom mic was connected to the mic input with phantom power engaged on that channel.
It seems a load on the phantom power circuit makes a difference. This really is a nice mixer for the price and you can disregard a lot of the negative reviews. Also, with the latest firmware update you can record on a usb stick on the Ui12. For the price you cant go wrong and the software interface beats
out the competition. Only 4 stars because small issues. I vote yes buy it.

Great little piece of gear

By Marg H. from Indianapolis

The Soundcraft Ui12 is a terrific little piece of gear. At $300 you simply can’t beat it.

This is the first digital mixer I’ve used, though I have extensive experience using the digital mixer in Sonar and other recording applications, and I found the software mixer to be very easy to use, very intuitive. I spent about half an hour going over the manual, and from then on in I hardly had to look anything up.

Effects sound good, controls worked smoothly on my iPad and there was plenty of room to work. Controls were a bit small on my 7" tablet and my phone. Playback from an attached flash drive never stuttered. On my wish list is a way to manipulate the songs (rearrange them) on the flash drive while it’s attached to the unit.

The preamps are about what you would expect for a piece of gear in this price range. I’m used to my True Precision 8, and these preamps are certainly noisier. If very quiet preamps are necessary for your job, I’d plan on using an external ones.

All in all, hauling this little five-pound piece of gear and an iPad means that I don’t have to haul my reverb, eq, and compressor rack, my mixer, my snake, my playback device, my recorder, and quite a few cables. I’m not tied to the mix position. I can discreetly mix from anywhere in the hall. Bottom line: great performance at a couple hundred less pounds, more room in the car, shorter set-up time, and a lot less hassle. $300 sufficiently replaces a couple thousand bucks worth of gear.

Note that the latest firmware upgrade (as of 7/5/2016) allows the unit to record onto a flash drive (even when a flash drive is in place for playback).

The unit acts as its own hotspot, and reviewers have listed trouble with the unit’s signal not being very strong. Anticipating this might be a problem, I replaced the small antenna that comes with the unit with a 7dbi amplified antenna I had on hand. I didn’t have a problem with signal strength at all, though I have only worked in smaller venues.

Awesome piece of equipment

By Arnold from Fremont, CA

I Will start by mentioning I am a novice at best with audio equipment and this is the first mixer I have used that was controlled by a mobile device. I thought it worked great! We bought it for our church because the mixer in the podium went out and we thought this would be a good way to expand the capabilities of what we had. We have used it so far for our church annual meeting and I will say, it was nice to be able to sit and walk around the room and be able to control the volume level. It did take a little getting used to, but I do like that, in addition to using the podium with it, I can now set up additional speakers if needed for a larger event. I would give it 5 stars, but I really haven't pushed it to its limits yet to see what it can do. Can't wait to use it at a bigger event!

Great little mixer

By Jeff Y. from Ohio
Music Background: Sound Engineer since 98

The mic pre's sound good, the FX are AMAZING! The built-in WiFi isn't worth using, but if you hook up your own WiFi router and it's all good. The interface is easy enough to get around in. One thing that I did like that isn't mentioned much was the fact that you can change the headphone outs to two more aux sends (they must either be both aux or both headphones) in the settings menu. It would be nice to have the option to rack mount, but not a big deal for how I use it.

Soundcraft Ui12 Digital Mixer

By John R. from West Texas
Music Background: Pro

I got into digital mixers by buying the Behringer X Air 12 first. I think it sounds great, but i was still curious about the Ui12. With the $299 price tag I thought that I may as well get one and try it, thinking that I could always sell the one I didn't want to keep. After several gigs with the Ui12, I'm thinking that this one will be the keeper. It sounds fine and the software I'm thinking is superior to the Behringer app. It's much easier to get around in, and is much better appearance wise. I haven't had any connection issues yet either. Also, the on board processing is the real deal from Lexicon, DBX, etc. instead of imitations of the same as in the Ultimately, I like both units, but the Soundcraft Ui12 is the one for me for the longterm.

perfect intro to digital mixing

By Joel from san diego, ca
Music Background: drummer, 11 years exp.

First digital mixer I own and I'm loving the features a digital mixing. I use it at church hardwired + hotspot to a MacBook pro and I've not yet lost signal in about 1.5 months of use. I also have three other devices connected to it via hotspot. Hotspot range is limited to about 45-65 foot radius depending on its proximity to walls and such.

Any device that uses an HTML browser can connect to the mixer via its hotspot or with an external router. I use in tandem OS, Windows, Android, and iOS with no issues.

Plus its super portable compared to my 32 channel Mackie+case. If you don't need more than 4 trs inputs or more than 8 MIC ins, get this mixer.

The only downside I can think of is not having any buttons to move on command like an analog board but that should be obvious and not much of a problem since we live with our button-less devices anyways.

Pro sound quality, can do what most can't... Wifi hub works good except when it drops off

By Mike R. from Los Angeles, CA

First the positives: It does what is advertised. I'm all about keeping my on-stage equipment compact and as portable as long as it doesn't compromise the sound quality. This little unit allowed me to get rid of my racks of signal processors, a large mixer and a bunch of cables.

The negative: The WiFi hub has dropped out during gigs and stopped the show to wait for the unit to boot back up. With 30 years of experience of performing, I know that stuff happens unexpectedly with electronic equipment. And if you have a backup plan, you can be prepared for most contingencies. My backup to the WiFi problem is to directly connect my laptop through the LAN of the unit.

There are several reviewers (not here) that have the same problem. I still use this mixer for most of my gigs and I'm prepared to deal with the drop off... I just wish I didn't have to.

So far so great

By Cliff from San Luis Obispo, CA
Music Background: songwriter with blues produced by B.B. King, country rock songs recorded by Pure Praire League, 49 Special, Virginia Squires

Far as I know, this is only device of this type that has it's own wifi "hub." Looks like all the others rely on venue's WIFI (good luck!). Their software update process is a bit of a hoop jumper and trying to go to their desktop browser url in OSX keeps taking me to some junk website. But works perfectly with my iPad and it packs some of the best mic pres, reverb and compression known to modern civilization! And you can toss it (gently) into (padded cell of) your gig bag.

Really easy mixing on stage but...

By Jim from Valparaiso, IN

Wireless mixing and monitor control is a thrill. The mixer software is excellent. I have tried everything but creating "shows". Being able to save all mixer and eq settings for each song is great. The only drawback so far: the Wi-Fi hub drops out for no discernible reason and there is no output. The necessary reboot that follows is too slow, This has happened 3 times, once during a performance. My current plan is to backup our wireless connections ( I pad and I phone) with an Ethernet connected laptop. Be prepared. Its a bit clunky cosmetically ( I find it homely but appealing) . It really should be rack -mountable. The Wi-Fi antenna should be better protected in its folded state. A bit more recess please. Four stars from me if you fix the Wi-Fi drop out. Five for rack mounting, too. . .
