Universal Audio UAFX Orion Tape Echo Pedal Reviews

Tape Delay Guitar Pedal with 3 Tape Modes, Delay, Mix, Feedback, Wonk, and Rec Level Controls, and Bypass and Preamp Switches

Emerging from Universal Audio's flagship Starlight Echo Station, the UAFX Orion Tape Echo puts authentic EP-III-style effects right under your foot. This guitar effects pedal not only gives you a glorious cache of magical delay effects, but it also exquisitely captures the original hardware's analog preamp for beautifully fat, boosted tones. You get three tape modes, arming you with a trio of distinctive sonic colors, along with a Wonk control for modulated repeats and wow-and-flutter artifacts. Integrating the Orion Tape Echo with the rest of your guitar rig is a breeze, thanks to selectable true or trails bypass switching, switchable preamp emulation, and analog dry-through. Few things are as ear-grabbing as a '70s-style tape echo, and the Universal Audio UAFX Orion Tape Echo packs the sound of one of the most iconic vintage tape delays ever built into a classy, pedalboard-friendly stompbox.

Outstanding

By Terry from MO
Music Background: 40+ years semi-pro

This little box does the tape echo thing really well, with a lot of control over the sound of the repeats - as others have suggested, it has an almost digital quality on the cleanest setting or absolute warble and grit on the most extreme.
Makes this quite a fun toy to have in your arsenal.
The real magic is in the preamp - it adds a clean boost to your overall sound that is very useable. In fact, I set the pedal in my FX loop and can turn the loop on and off with a footswitch. Leaving the preamp always engaged, I can kick on the FX loop and get a solo boost with or without the echo. Really enhances an already simple setup to allow for more sonic options.
Build quality seems solid. Not a big fan of the plastic knobs, as that seems the cheapest part of the build. I would happily pay extra off the line for sturdier plastic or metal knobs, but I can always customize.

Great pedal

By AJ from Vermont, USA

Sounds great, super-simple to use. If you're a fan of the one-pedal-does-one-thing-and-does-it-well, the Orion really checks that box brilliantly. I've compared it against more expensive tape delays that I own, and the Orion is staying on my board.

UAFX Orion - In search of the lost Echo

By Frederick C. from Connecticut
Music Background: Playing Surf since the 60s!!!!

Wow! Where to start? I have decided a while ago that I needed an echo/delay mostly for Rockabilly Slap-Back. Then I got the notion to incorporate it into my surf music. This magic box does the trick and then some.

The Orion sounds to me like a Roland Space Echo or Maestro Echoplex. The Tape Switch is icing on the cake allowing sounds from "Wow that new tape is nice and bright" to "I better check that tape. It sounds warm and dark but kinda like it's getting ready to break".

The Wonk knob at first was a "say what?" sort of option but it cleverly combines all the modulation you can use into only one knob. Seems to me that as you turn the knob the wow and flutter stay in a more musical balance than adjusting two parameters.

So the rockabilly slap back sound I wanted is there in spades BUT adding the Orion to my spring reverb pedal produces a fabulously drippy spring reverb that stays on while the surf music portion of our sets is going. It's subtle but if the Orion is turned off the loss of the 3-dimesional tonality is quite noticeable. This is not a reflection or criticism of my spring reverb - far from it. The combination of spring reverb and echo is a match made in surf heaven!

Buy one! Play it and never look back!

Awesome Delay Pedal.

By Richard S. from MISSOULA, MT
Music Background: Professional Pedal steel player for over 50 years.

I am extremely happy with this pedal. It is replacing a TC Electronics Prophet Digital Delay pedal on my pedal board. Was not happy with the TC pedal at all. I have a NU-X Atlantic Reverb/Delay pedal that I run in my amp's effects loop. I like the analog and digital delays, but the tape delay leaves a lot to be desired. The Orion fills that void. The ability to taylor the sound more is the reason I bought it. I am a pedal steel guitar player, and sometimes pedals that sound great on a 6 string regular guitar, don't sound that great on a pedal steel. We watch the demo videos on YouTube, but they only use 6 string guitars as no one does these demos on pedal steel. This pedal is great.

My pedal board has an "effects loop" where all my gain and modulation pedals reside, so they don't alter the tone of my signal change. This Orion is actually after my volume pedal and the cord to the amp comes from this pedal. I really like the delay in that spot of my signal change. I use the Orion for more "Drastic" delays, and the Atlantic for more subtle analog delays.

Best small EP3-style pedal yet!

By Sweetwater Customer

As a former owner of a Maestro Echoplex EP-3 (sold long ago), I've been chasing this sound for a while. I didn't want a larger complicated pedal, because I wanted to fit it on my small pedal board, and I don't need a lot of extra features. The UAFX Orion satisfies my need for a great sounding, EP-3-style pedal. I'm going to give it 5 stars for the sound and ease of dialing in my settings, but it could have included a tap tempo input or an expression input.

I used to use a Dunlop Echoplex pedal, and while the Dunlop is also a great-sounding unit, I found that the Orion was easier to adjust for the exact sound I wanted, plus it had the preamp circuit built in for extra authenticity. I also compared the Orion to the tape setting of the EQD Spirals. Again, I liked the Orion better, although the ability to save programs on the Spirals is a big plus.

Sounds great!

By Michael L. from Norris, TN
Music Background: Audio Engineer / Composer of Music for TV & Film

I own the UA Statlight and the Orion is supposed to be the same tape unit. For whatever reason I think the Orion sounds better. Simple to use, sounds great. It'd be nice to have a tap to tempo but at a budget price you can't beat this.

All you really need

By Kirk J. from GIRARD, PA

In a market with too many digital sounding delays it's nice to find a great sounding pedal at a reasonable price. Has nice tone and sweep ranges that probably covers most of what you'll do. Unless you really need a digital workstation this is all you really need. Sturdy build and usable functions. Glad I bought it.

Awesome tape delay

By Sweetwater Customer

Love this pedal. I've had many tape delay pedals over the years and this is for sure one of my favorites. The Wonk knob adds very musical and realistic modulation and tape crinkle. The preamp is so nice I'll probably leave it on all the time. Self oscillation sounds great too. Fantastic pedal at a great price.

Fits right in....

By Tyler from gnarlymen.com

Caveat: I play surf guitar, so this fits right into my perfect pedalboard.
I was a little concerned that the effect would be so pronounced it would turn my sound into mush, but thanks to the Mix knob, I can get as much or as little pronounced echo as I like. I'm running everything into a Surfy Bear reverb, and with the right knob tweak, I can even get the slapbacks dripping! The echo is more pronounced at lower reverb settings. The preamp seems to add some 'girth' and warmth, but it's subtle. I have a clean boost going into it, so I can hit it harder, and get some gnarl on it.
I wish the effect had a gain control for the preamp, and tap tempo for the repeats, but for the price, it's really the perfect addition to my rig.

Great ambient delay for the money!

By Ralph M.

I've tried several different delays, granular, analog etc. This is my favorite out of all the ones I've tried. I think if you play shoegaze or any type of ambient indie rock you can't go wrong with this pedal, especially for the price.

Excellent tape delay

By Dave

This UA Orion is the delay I've been searching for. I've gone through countless delay pedals over the years looking for something that matches the certain sound in my head, and I'm pretty sure this pedal captures it. It can go from pristine delay to beat up, wonky tape machine sounds in the flick of a switch and turn of a knob. I don't see this leaving my board anytime soon.

Tape Echo - out of this world

By Richard G. from Saugus, MA

I haven't even begun to tap into all this pedal does and I am hooked. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an affordable high quality Tape echo pedal. Would buy again at $ if ever stolen. It's that good.

Love it. Very easy to dial in great atmospheric delay. The Tape switch, Wonk and Record Level controls add so much variation and are easy to understand. Dialing in character is a breeze.
Couldn't be more pleased.

Beautiful, warm, haunting

By Robert from Cincinnati, Ohio
Music Background: 49 years playing. Have played out, but always for fun and never for profit.

Like every other player I suppose, I'm continually searching for a sound in my head. I play acoustic, mostly fingerstyle, and mostly chord melody. I make a lot of chords, but I don't really play a lot of chords in the conventional sense. I use chords mostly as a means of arriving at the notes I want to play.

I play mostly solo, and I'm always looking for new and interesting ambience. I've invested in other pedals, some of which were great. Many however, ended up disappointing when applied to my acoustic and style of playing. One of my personal criteria for effects, is maintaining the integrity of my dry signal over the effect. I enjoy getting lost in ambience from time to time, but I want my fundamental tone to maintain its fidelity without being clouded by the effect.

I honestly did not know what to expect from this pedal. I have a deep appreciation for Don Carr, and his experience and insight into all the gear he covers. My decision to purchase this was largely influenced by his excellent explanation and masterful playing.

My initial fear was that the preamp would overdrive my acoustic amp, and that my tone couldn't be clean with the active pickup in my acoustic. I'm happy to say that I was completely incorrect. There are plenty of pedals that were never specifically designed for acoustic, that still work splendidly. Another for example is the "Earthquaker Dispatch Master." I am very pleased to say that this pedal is no exception.

I thought that the "Wow"and the "Flutter" might turn out more quirky than something of substance for my acoustic. As it turns out, they are hauntingly beautiful. You can usually tell when a pedal is well engineered, when you can start with everything at 12 o'clock, and get a good usable sound. That is exactly what I did, and exactly what I would recommend. Starting there, you can make minor adjustments and not only find a sweet spot, but multiple sweet spots.

I look for this pedal to likely double in price after these new form factors have caught on. I've spent twice as much on other pedals that sounded half as good. If you're thinking about one, I would suggest doing it now. I have no regrets, and this has found a permanent place in my arsenal of gear.

Orion UAD delay

By chris from sac area
Music Background: intermediate

Another win. First and foremost, again with the excellent service/delivery by Sweetwater.....best in the biz :)

The pedal is exactly what I wanted. No "frills" excellent sounding/working delay. I didn't want to step up to the Starlight because I won't use most of that extra stuff or go stereo. Registration is a breeze, a quick firmware update, plug it in, and enjoy.

A few things stand out to me. For one, you have the option to have the tail continue after disengaging it, or to just stop. This is very handy for me. Also, I really enjoy that the footswitch is nice and soft. I'm usually in bare feet or socks, so that is a nice touch. It's interesting that it has a mix and a recording level, you can get a bit wider of a pallet between the two instead of just a mix control. Oh, did I mention it sounds great! ;)

Highly recommended.

Orion echo pedal

By Jim from Phila.
Music Background: Retired 78 yr old musician

I've tried quite a few tape echo simulation pedals, Catalinbread's Belle Epoch, Line 6 big green machine, Dunlop's Echoplex, Boss' RE2 space echo - so far I like this new one from UA & the Belle Epoch best. They still don't quite come up to my old Echoplex tape unit (from the '70's as I remember it), but the Orion's pretty good until something better comes along.

Excellent

Great pedal. So many options, it's like working in a studio. The 3 way switch controlling tape wear is awesome, very cool. Still discovering sounds after having it for a month. Solid build, looks good too.
