Crowd Mics?!

By Yaroslav Stalin from Sacramento, CA on February 16, 2023 Music Background: Drummer, Sound Engineer

We've owned a couple of these for a few years now. They've been on the shelf after we got shotguns for crowd mics. But recently we hung them up as crowd mics in a 150-200 person prayer room for daily worship sets and they work great. And yes the off axis rejection is insane!

AT U853R microphone

This mic is great and can be used on a stand or hanging. It has a nice warm sound. I have used several of these over the years and will probably go back to it when the need arises in the future.

Third one. All are great!

We use these mics mainly for youth Christmas plays. It"s not like having individual mics for each person, but it is much cheaper than a dozen wireless lapel or over the ear mics. Our youngest children don"t project very well but these mics pick them up very well.

Audio-Technica U853R (Black) Microphones - EXCELLENT!

By Michael Wicks from Florida on April 3, 2013 Music Background: Live Sound Engineer

We had 2 other hanging condenser mics which did not have the coverage, nor the power, of these mics. Really enhance the sound of our church choir.

Use of AT-U853R for theatre performance

By Joel Frank from Bismarck, ND on November 15, 2018 Music Background: Sound Engineer, guitarist, vocalist

We used the AT-U853R hanging mics for a fast paced original play on the "Voices of the Great War"
A series of letters to home from North Dakota nurses and soldiers who served in WWI. We engaged the low cut filter and it seemed to help with the 250Hz bump that occurs with this mike. There were songs and poems from the era as well as readings of excerpts of the letters, The mike performed well.

Please

Nice Mic

By Sweetwater Customer on December 16, 2017

I recently bought two of these to use with a Christmas Program. Program is next week and the mics are working fine in practice.

Decent quality for the price.

I recently purchased for an outdoor event and thought it was a bit sensitive in the low frequencies due to the feedback I was running into.
Even with the low cut engaged I could not control the low mids this mic was picking up on. The speakers were placed 180 degrees away from the front of the mic about 30 feet away. For cardioid they seemed pretty sensitive. I then decided to hang them in out Performing Arts room and feel they are working out well as recording mics, not sound reinforcement. They are about 15 feet above the stage and is pretty sensitive for cardioid. Percussive, transient sounds and instruments tend to make this mic react in a different way. SPL's have a lot to do with this but I found that Xylophones were causing the exact same problem I was having in the outdoor installation. I would say around 250 hz really made this mic responsive. Dial it away and it seem to pick up the vocals from the singers much better. I used a Mackie with VLZ3 and these mics were near silent. I think for recording I will go with more of an omni instead of cardioid. The cardioid did provide some good separation since I was using 2 of them for a clean clear stereo image. I mounted them together and at 90 degrees from each other.
Definitely good mics for this sort of thing for the money.
