An excellent swiss army knife
Vocals, guitar, drums, you name it. It sounds wonderful on everything. It is darker than the u87 but for me, that is part of its appeal. The darker tone adds flexibility and makes harshness an engineering problem of the past, but it's still remarkably receptive to any EQ move you make. You can easily add those upper-range frequencies with a subtle high shelf if you want to get that 87 sound. Still, this thing's versatility puts it over the top as Neumann's best solid-state mic. It is an underrated gem in my book.
Love It
What a great microphone, to record with it,
it is a blessing for an artist and engineer serious about leveling up their craft. The Neumann U47 Fet is a phenomenal microphone worth the investment.
The best!
U could put this mic in the center of a room w/ no other mics & it would record all the instruments perfectly. KWIZ radio in Santa Ana CA used to broadcast the Methodist church services every Sun morning in the early '60s. If u listened u'd think there were separate miss for the sermon, choir, & organ. In reality, just one ONE Telefunken, a little bigger than this one, hanging from the ceiling! Absolutely beyond belief. And KRLA Pasadena, Top 40 Beatles powerhouse, was the only station I ever saw w/ a Telefunken in the control room. And so many pics of Sinatra & Dinah Shore singing in front of one. The best microphone in the world!
Great Mic
I bought this for micing a Kick drum. I could not be happier. I used to use a d112 and some form of transducer. I have three of them homemade DW moon mic and Solomon. The d112 and transducer defiantly does the job through a neve 1073. First time I used this mic i just really wanted to hear only this mic. So I miced a kick on the outside with the u47fet. It was probably one of the best sounding kicks I have heard with absolutely nothing on it (EQ, comp etc). Now combine the D112 and the U47fet and WOW. If you just buy this for kick you will not be disappointed. I have also used this mic with good success with acoustic guitar and percussion (tamb, shacker, etc). But it really shines on stuff with bass in it. I cannot wait to use this on upright bass. Forget about it for vocals it just sounds weird. I have heard some people say this mic works for some peoples vocals but I have not found that person yet.
I had the originals in the 70s
Haven't bought the new one, but I had six of them in my studio mid to late 70's. One of my FAVORITE mics on kick, believe it or not. Would really like to hear how the new one stacks up, especially selling at almost 10-times the price they sold for then!
Killer mic!
In combination with a D112 (or D20) you can't get a better kick drum sound!
(Just so people know, the review about this being used on "Pet Sounds" is a joke from the show Portlandia. Pet Sounds came out in 1966, the U47 FET was not released until 1969.)
Awesome Mic!
I have been researching this microphone for the longest time as my mentor and very famous Portuguese recording artist Jorge Ferreira has one and swears by it. I have a tube U-47 clone by Flea and love the sound but got this microphone recently and fell in love with it on my type of vocal. I share a similar vocal style with Jorge in that it's a brighter male tenor vocal and it translate my vocal beautifully. My vocal chain is the Neumann U-47 Fet - BAE 1073 - BAE 10DC comp - Apogee Symphony A/D - Logic Pro X. It picks up other sources very well as well. This is my workhorse microphone for sure. OH - this mic for some reason has a softening of the "S" sibilance like it's own deesser. I suggest you get this microphone as it has a beautiful rich sound.
Great Mic
I own many Neumann microphones (U67, U87, M149), and now I own this mic. It may not be quite as versatile as the U87, but to me, it sounds much better than the U87 on many sources. It is my favorite mic for backing vocals, guitar amps, and acoustic guitars. It is simple, elegant, and vibey. This is a must have for a complete mic locker.
Used on Pet Sounds
This is the mic they used on Pet Sounds.
