Love it

By RAMA H. from Orem, UT

I love this synth. It has a really unique interface that makes playing music really fun. The effects are great. I will be buried with it. Lots of good YouTube reviews cover all the details if you want to know more about the functions.

One thing I've seen in many reviews was criticisms of noise. There may have been some problem units shipped out a few years ago, but mine is fine. When plugged into a wall adapter,it will have some noticable white noise, but only when the volume knob is turned up past 80%, and the synth produces plenty of volume for My headphoes around 40%, So the white noise isn't an issue for me. I wish I wouldn't have hesitated for so long about getting it. With simple gain staging you will never have to worry about the internal noise.

It's possible that some people are getting a ground loop while using this device plugged into speakers. One possible fix is to just power the device with a battery bank.

That being said. I do notice some type of faint and very high pitch (like above 15khz) electrical buzzing coming from the device, probably from a capacitor or something? It isn't present in my headphones or speakers. Honestly it's very faint and it gets blocked by the padding of my headphones.

Brilliant Synth

By Britton K. from Minneapolis, MN

The effects alone are worth the price of admission here. But having a great sounding mono synth in addition makes this a killer deal. In typical Dreadbox fashion, the VCO and VCF are charming and unique. The UI is actually really quick and intuitive, and the modulators are fantastic. There are some clever designs too like the wave selector (which makes for an interesting modulation destination), and the fade in/out functionality.

Being able to use LFOs, EGs, and sequencers on FX parameters opens some wild doors (especially since the delay is digital and you can do super short delay times).

My only complaint is the USB power, but the synth is so awesome otherwise that I'm not even deducting a half star for that. This is a slam dunk.

A Flagship Concept in Mono (w Stereo FX)

By MadShamanStudios

Incredibly rich analog sound. Beautiful and powerful digital FX. Extreme portability. Ease of use.

At an INIT setting with just the waveform, the Typhon sounds richer than my Moog Mother 32. When you add any parameter - the second oscillator, the filter, the FX, the modulators - the initial sound takes on remarkable life and shows you why people are obsessed with the Typhon. It is the real deal. The analog functions (oscillators, filter, resonance, ADSR), are so juicy.

The FX section has everything you need and its audio quality is high-grade. You can pass external audio through it, basically use it as an FX box for any audio you want. That's crazy.

Portability - this thing has a nice heft for its size, and does not feel cheap at all. At the same time, it is highly portable. I can bring it with a little MIDI controller to a cafe and develop sounds while out - a pleasure!

Ease of use - no synthesizer with multiple envelopes could be called simple to learn. But I have to say, the Typhon is as simple as they get. The learning curve through the menu system was very digestible. It's also a great synth for learning synthesis. This morning I learned to make various kick drums using YouTube videos that show the concepts - and I translated them to the Typhon with great results. Menu diving is NOT deep. As Loopop says on his video, you can't quite call it "diving." Pretty straightforward.

Firmware update was easy on my Mac. I wouldn't mind if the L output was mono on its own, but I'm not going to complain about having 1/4" stereo outs, especially with fx like these. MIDI connectivity was easy. With the Audient EVO4 and my laptop, I'm recording high quality sounds from this thing anywhere and everywhere. THANK YOU DREADBOX!

NOTE: The title of my review says "flagship concept" as opposed to flagship device. Dreadbox have other analog synths that could be called their flagship model. But the Typhon concept - analog quality, digital control, portability, ease of use - is perhaps their most important concept. The Typhon is the kind of analog synthesizer we need in this day and age. Onboard FX are essential to modern sound design, and quick high quality results help creativity a lot. I hope Dreadbox continue with more portable FX synths like this, hopefully duophonic or quadraphonic!

Typhon v Erebus - I really wanted an Erebus because they're duophonic! I think the Erebus is great if you have the time and knowledge to quickly reshape your synth sound. But the Typhon has presets, many more modulators, and many more FX. That makes it incredibly powerful and efficient from a production standpoint. I also hear that the presets are exchangeable and you can download preset packs from sellers and such. Although the Erebus was my first choice, I knew the Typhon would fit into a working studio that much faster. Now that I have it I'm so glad I chose it over the Erebus, because the work flow is so much better. With 3 modulators that can have 4 modulations types and 32 modulation targets, it's hard to believe the Typhon is cheaper than the Erebus!

One of the BEST SYNTHS ever

By Noj S. from NOLA
Music Background: Singer, Electronic Composer

WOW. The Typhon is an incredible synth. I have been composing electronic music since 1985 and been through many synths, workstations, and soft synths. This outshines them all!!!!

However, the new 4.1 firmware upgrade which fixes the very loud noise issue does not download for me. I followed the directions, viewed many video's, and read oodles of forums with no luck. Changed the USB cord 3 times and tried on my second MacPro with no luck. I am very very computer savy and have been using computers since 1989 when DOS was the king of OS's and a CAD Draftsman for 35 years.

When I run into problems as such, it just pisses me off as I am sure DreadBox knew the noise loop was a problem prior to putting the unit on the market. Now its up to me to "try" to load the new drivers to make the dam thing work properly. Well, after 8 hours and 3 days I'm giving up.

It's for sale who wants it!!!!!!! I would most definitely give a 5 star rating if the unit would not have been shipped out faulty by DreadBox. I was thinking of buying another DreadBox unit but, not anymore.

My first real analog synth melted my curtains :)

By DOGH2O from Pearce, AZ
Music Background: BREED MUSICIAN

I'm a guitar player firstly but love ambient, industrial, experimental, techno and hip-hop. I'm also an IT systems engineer from the days of the Jargon File, DOS, and CP/M (i.e. green screen). So, I worked hard at getting a software synth setup and it works well but I kept thinking about Switched On Bach and the radio program Hearts in Space (1970's). Then I got hooked on Basic.fm with Walt Panorama and it went off the air :(. Walt got me into Sensible Soccers and from there Look Mum No Computer. After watching this show, I was finally ready to ditch the computer and start to approach music without using it as much as possible. The best things is it cuts down on complexity and most of all gives that true, phat synth sound with not worries about crashing. Look Mum No Computer is what got me out of my chair and recommend his site based solely on the title of the channel but you will be blown away by his podcasts. Very inspiring. The Typhon? It's like a dream come true. All I need but now that I have the analog synth but, who knows what kind of Thomas Dolby freak I will become. :)

Dreadful USB noise

By DJDDay

Bought this back in May 2021. Must have gotten an early lot, because it has horrible *HORRIBLE* USB noise that is simply unbearable. You have to run it on it's own dedicated power brick, which makes USB-MIDI useless. It's a shame, because it's really a neat monosynth. Just sad that Dreadbox made such a critical blunder when manufacturing it (they sell a Y-splitter cable for the Nymphes for the exact same problem, but it's not compatible with the Typhon unless it's a very specific run).

Huge Sound!!

By Sweetwater Customer

Great synth in a compact box, there's a wide range of presets and the effects are amazing. I use it to jam using an external MIDI keyboard and grove box and I can spend hours just tweaking knobs and trying different effects on a sequence, really fun for jamming and the service from sweetwater was awesome. Really happy with my little synth and recommend it 100%!

Unique phatness,like moog,but grittier

By Sweetwater Customer

First ordered a Minitaur. I waited for over a month because they were on backorder. I finally got it and it sounded great but it really didn't mesh with my subsequent 25.I was able to return it and ordered a Typhon at the same time. It's easy to pick up and play I can use it with my Marshall Stanmore II mini jack to RCA when I'm in my room and easily move it to the studio to integrate with my moog stuff. Next up is learning the sequencer

Typhon: Future Classic? Duh.

By Jesse P. from SOCORRO, NM

This thing is amazing. And with the USB update, even more so. The sound is unique, so much that I sometime just turn it on and before I know it I've killed an hour. Smooth to Aggressive sound palate. You will run out out of patch saves fast as sound design is easy. Perfect basses, leads, and arpeggios as well as musical melodically pads. It's not huge polyphony-wise, but add some chorus and effects and larger spectrum pads are possible. A truly masterfully designed synth for all EDM or Ambient styles or even more contemporary music, for those looking for a unique add to the studio. I frikin LOVE this thing.

Powerful Box of Amazing Sounds

By Jesse P. from SOCORRO, NM
Music Background: EDM

Very impressive. I have a Hydrasynth and a Matrixbrute and this little guy stands tall right next to them. There is no way this thing sounds bad even if you try. Patching is easy. And all the presets even sound amazing. Great I/O options too. I can't recommend this enough.

Great bang-for-buck!

By Phillippr from Atlanta
Music Background: Self-taught Amateur

This thing is great. It has such a full and vibrant sound to it and the modulations possibilities are truly impressive. I'm fairly new to synths, but the Typhon is easy to pick up and play, but at the same time I know I've just scratched the surface of its possibilities. Solid product, especially for the price!

Outstanding synth

By Matt from CINCINNATI OH
Music Background: Noise, ambient, post-metal, industrial

Probably one of the best synths I've ever owned. The analog part of it is pretty standard, and sounds great, there's a lot of digital controlling going on here for parameters and modulation, it needs it to keep price down I assume, but filter does drive, even on external audio. The FX section has to be heard to be believed. All reverb plugins are put to shame by the Sinevibes FX features. Think of it as a monophonic Volca with the best effects section you ask for at a bargain. This synth could sell itself on the Reverb effects alone. The shame is that you can't use two delay/reverbs at once.

...and the Gods made love!

By Jerry S. from Michigan
Music Background: Ragtime Guitarist / Sound Explorer

I was looking for a desktop synth to go with my MicroFreak(s),,,something similar where I could load/save presets but in an analog version.

The Dreadbox Typhon was the answer.

It is a killer synth to begin with and the added Sinevibes FX simply takes it over the top!...some the best FX I have ever heard.

I am so impressed overall with this unit that I ordered and received 1 of the 500 (#187) Limited Edition Typhons from Synthesizer.GR in Greece, where they are only available.

Also, Note that the Dreadbox Erebus V3 Special Edition is only available at Sweetwater...and I have one...beautiful.

Loads of fun! Unique sounds and a reasonable price

love, love, loving this synthesizer!!

By rocco h. from los angeles
Music Background: composer & producer of ambient sprawl & unusual grooves

a perfect marriage of digital feature sets & analog richness from dreadbox. both aspects, the digital & the analog, are setup in a really unique but very clear & easily approachable way. I don't tend to learn new gear very quickly or easily, but I was really able to hit the ground running with the typhon & start enjoying it right out of the box. such a great value!! I highly recommend.

Mono Maniac Monster Musical Module

By Jon from Nawlins
Music Background: Singer, Composer, Live Performance

All I can say is WOW! The Typhone is hands down the best monophonic synth I have ever owned or played. I have been composing electronic music since 1987 and have owned around 25 Mono Synths including, Moogs, Rolands, Elektron, DSI's, Korg's, etc.

This thing is a beast and so easy to use. The sequencer is a Blast! The sounds are SUPER PHAT! The build quality is EXCELLENT (I love the knobs). The FX are INCREDIBLE. I'm looking hard at other Dreadbox products due to the performance of this little GEM. Polyend/Dreadbox Medussa may be in my near future!

My new favorite monosynth

By Paul from Savannah, Georgia
Music Background: Producer of 15+ years

This synth is very well thought out and built like a tank. The oscillator section is simple yet very effective and they sound huge. There's a sizeable amount of modulation baked in and The FX from sinevibez are a nice icing. I would've loved to have been able to use the audio input without triggering a note but the "input" preset makes up for it. Lastly for being analog there's almost no noise bleed... Great synth, great sound, great build and great price.

Firmware v2.0.1

By Steve S. from South Jersey

I just wanted to add that once you upgrade your Typhon to Firmware v2.0.1 there will be no more noise that was mentioned in my initial review ... My Typhon is now quiet as a church mouse when it is idle ... not screaming out synth notes when played.

Huge Sounds in a Small Box

By Steve S. from South Jersey

My Typhon arrived yesterday and I've already spent more than 6 hours going through all the pre-sets and knob twisting. This small but powerful analogue synthesizer is just what I've been waiting for. It's so easy to play a caveman can use it.

One thing that was mentioned on one of the demos on YouTube. There is a faint background noise that he claims could be a ground loop. This is not an overwhelming sound nor is it completely silent when no notes are played.

You may not notice this but if you do there is a way out of this.

What you can do is plug into the headphone jack with a mini to 1/4 stereo adapter and the noise disappears.

The Real Deal

By DIV1NITAL

If you've researched anything about this synth, it's even better in person. There are plenty of demos and tutorials out there and it's an absolute joy to use so I won't go into detail. This is an analog mono "of the future" the sound is there, classically Dreadbox, classically huge. The Sinevibes effects are phenomenal and the modulators are astounding. Everything is a class act for the price and it can be powered by USB.

The unit does not come with a DC wall plug.

Here are some comments on some things that you might want to know that I didn't as someone receiving the first batch.

The firmware as is (August 7th 2020) does not receive MIDI clock nor MIDI start/stop. The only MIDI functionalities it has right now are playing notes with a keyboard and sequencing externally. Also, USB in its current state has no MIDI whatsoever. On Dreadbox's website these things are ALL IN THE WORKS and should be taken care of completely by October. I cannot slight them due to the pandemic, however my plan was to use this synth with all my others and sync it.

Right now I have to press the play sequence button manually and attempt to sync it with external gear by setting it to the proper BPM, almost like manually setting a guitar pedal's delay time if it lacks MIDI.

Inspiring Analog Monosynth

By Erik from OR
Music Background: power electronics noiser

I'm picky about my synths. Most just don't end up sounding like anything I really would use and I end up back to a sampler to make my oxn sounds. Dreadbox and Sinevibes have totally won me over with this little guy. Size wise it's perfect, with a decent sized screen that is clear and easy to read. The build quality is a solid metal box with great feeling knobs and sliders. The synth itself is a beast and has made me an instant fan of Dreadbox. You want rumbly lows or howling ambient sounds, something in between? It's all in there, and enhanced with some really top notch fx.
