Swapping 6L6 to EL34B - Amazing sound

By Xylor from SACRAMENTO, CA
Music Background: Too many years

I was never satisfied with my Mark V's sound on these old Mesa 6L6GC - when it comes to Gain/overdrive. So I decided to get these new Tung Sol EL34B and I hoped that they could get those classic / hard rock / metal tones what I used to like from the 80s - 90s (VH, Rush, Metallica, AC/DC, G&R, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, and up to Dream Theater). When Sweetwater delivered my new EL34B tubes, I installed and played a few mins. In the first 30 sec, I immediately felt in-love with my Mark V - like the very first time (again). These EL34B tones are needed that wasn't there at the beginning: Thick, smooth, and warm tones. It have been lacking in my rhythms and solo sections. My original Mesa 6L6GC are wonderful, but were always too "woofy"...and too much bass for my taste. So these new EL34B have more upper Mids and tiny less on the top and bottom. This allows me to increasing the treble without compromising the 5-band EQ. Now it's kinda leaning towards "Marshall'ish". WAIT..I didn't say that it's actually like Marshall..no...it's still always a Mesa crunch and NOT a Marshall. Just wanna clear. I recommend getting these EL34B if you want get into classic/hard rock and Dream Theater era. You'll be happy getting these tubes. By the way, these EL23B are a lot smaller than the regular power tubes.FYI.

Great Russian tubes

By Sweetwater Customer

The tubes are quite expensive, but what's not nowadays? They arrived well packed and quickly. I was able to install and bias them in a few minutes. They biased perfectly in my 100w Randall at 36mV.
Hopefully these will last longer than the cheap ruby's.

At home in a Plexi or JCM800

By Rob E. from Missouri
Music Background: Amp tech / musician

I am a big fan of EHX tube brands, especially Tung Sol and Mullard. I bought a quartet of Tung Sol EL-34B for my AMI Mixmaster (3ch: BF Twin Reverb, JCM60 & 1959 Plexi) as I thought the resident Mullards were getting weak (they were not). The Tung Sols really made the Marshallesque channels of this amp sing a little tighter than the Mullards. But both brands have a lot of fantastic musically harmonic content. Especially in the zone where they live (loud).

The Twin Reverb channel was not as rich as with the Mullards, but still sounded great.

I'd give it a 5 star, but these tested a little leaky on EICO666 tube tester. Installing them and biasing them correctly rectified most of the leaky readings, which indicates they were made a while ago and have been sitting around.

Rating based on the sound, not lifespan (since it's my first purchase of these tubes).

By Christopher from Slidell, LA

I was going to get the Mesa Pair, but they were sold out. I figured if four match, then I basically have two matching pair.

I put these in a Marshall Origin 20, and it really opened the sound up from the Marshall branded JJs that were in there. I feel like it opened up the sound spectrum. These are so much clearer for both low gain and high gain. I should probably add that I replaced all the preamp tubes with Tung-Sol's also, but they obviously are doing something right, unless quality control issues arise in the future, these are going to be what I replace my power tubes with each and every time. I almost feel fortunate that the Mesa/Boogie Pair was out of stock, because I am totally 100% satisfied with the sound I am getting now.

Great Tubes! But May Require a Re-Bias

By Sweetwater Customer

2nd set from Sweetwater. First set was in a year or longer. But just installed a new set and had some issues.
My amp is a 1972 Marshall Super Lead 100 watt. The same amp/circuit as the Marshall 1959HW they make today.

My amp went nuts, popping and humming. Two tubes went into failure. Meaning they were glowing like molten lava! I compared the voltage info on the box to my first set, and this new set was definitely hotter.

The next day I swapped the order of the tubes, and had improved results. Still some red glow in the gray metal center on one or two tubes, but at least they were not going in to failure. But still not 100% working/sounding right.

I decided to pull the chassis and experiment with the bias adjustment. Not having any bias equipment, I went old school. I made note of where the bias was set, it was halfway. Then I dialed it all the way back counter clockwise. Flipped on the amp, at this point there was no red glow on the gray metal center of the tubes, but the amp sounded cold, harsh, and thin. Which is exactly what happens when bias is set too low. When the bias is set too high, that's when things go wrong. So you gotta find the happy medium setting where amp is sounding warm, but not causing the tubes to go into failure. I made small adjustments clockwise, checked the tubes, and waited a few minutes before adjusting again. I ended up just below the halfway point, with no red glow on the gray metal center. I will be taking the amp to a tech soon for bias and other stuff, but all good for right now.

Rene Martinez guitar/amp tech for Stevie Ray Vaughn, now with John Mayer for some years. He stated that you really should bias your amp daily, because power from the wall is always drifting up or down. Most of us can't or won't be able to do that. But for a serious player working at the level of John Mayer or Bonamassa then maybe yeah.

But it really is best to re-bias when putting in a new set of power tubes. And preferably have an amp tech with proper bias equipment do the work.

Lastly, these are great sounding tubes! Clean and punchy, quite Fendery sounding for an EL34.

Awesome Tubes

By Mark A. from Texas
Music Background: 35 years of playing and recording/producing music

Tung Sol gives you a great punchy and, even better, articulate upgrade to your tone. I've put them in my Marshall, Bogner Helios, and Friedman BE100 and they made EVERY amp sound just that much better....crystal clear and punchy tone from rhythms to leads dirty to clean. Everyone is looking for that 3D tone and these power and preamp tubes from Tung Sol make it happen!!

The Best EL34 on the market

By Mike from Brunner
Music Background: Professional

After using several different EL34 and 6CA7's in my amps, I found a review that had stated the Tung-Sol was the most musical, quietest, most reliable EL34 in production so when I saw Sweetwater had them in matched quads from the factory I sprung for a set.

After installing them in my Bogner Uberschall, I biased them at 32mA and each one of these tubes was withing .3 mA of each other. That's a very tight tolerance and better than any matched set I've ever purchased. I found after warming up for about 20 minutes, the current draw increased slightly but not enough to rebias, about 1-2 mA.

But the sound! Awesome! Tight low end that has just a little bit of sponginess when you dial up the lows, the perfect balance, rich harmonic mids, singing highs with no harshness. Absolutely the best EL34 on the market and I've tried them all even the "select" rebranded ones... EH, Shuguang, Ruby, Groove tubes, J/J, Mesa, Svetlana, Mullard, etc. I'll be buy more from Sweetwater.
