Wampler Tumnus Deluxe Transparent Overdrive Pedal Reviews

Overdrive Pedal with 3-band EQ, Controls for Level and Gain, Normal/Hot Switch, and Buffer Switch

The Wampler Tumnus Deluxe puts precise tone sculpting into one of Wampler's most popular overdrive circuits. The Tumnus Deluxe offers the same detailed clarity, gritty drive, and powerful boosting potential as the original design. Yet the addition of a 3-band EQ and a Normal/Hot switch opens up even more tonal options. On the side of the Wampler Tumnus Deluxe overdrive pedal, you'll find a Buffer switch that gives you access to transparent true-bypass switching or the tonal sweetening of this design's buffer. If you want the tone of the Tumnus with a wider range of character, check out the Tumnus Deluxe at Sweetwater.

Very nice

By Nick from NC on February 28, 2024

A great boost pedal. A great overdrive. A great pedal. Is an almost identical k style pedal plus more. A whole lot more. Wish I had picked one up sooner. The eq and controls are killer for getting the tone just right. This one is on my pedalboard for good. And so far every amp I have put it through it just works. Some pedals are picky about amps, or amps picky about pedals. Not to worry with this one. If used correctly , it goes with any amp like butter on popcorn. I would definitely get another if something happened to this one.

My bass rig loves Tumnus!

By Miles from Austin on February 20, 2024 Music Background: Trombone to acoustic guitar to electric guitar to percussion to bass. I’ve also repaired, modded, and designed and built tube amps. I know tone. 8^)

This is the sound I've been looking for. Just enough overdrive to get hairy, always on except for tamer passages when I want it really smooth. I have never played the original but this sounds like the Centaur of my dreams. A siren call, but not a sociopath - unless that's what you need.

I use it differently

By Slim on January 15, 2024 Music Background: Pro

I've used various boosts over the decades, starting with the original EHX LPB-1,a small steel box with a single knob you plugged directly into your amp rather than placing the floor. It was a righteous-sounding beast but had to give it up cuz tended to destroy speakers and amp circuits. That was in '69 and companies like EHX often offered too much of a dB increase.

Later in my career, such as is) I switched over to OD pedals figuring they could in many cases do double duty as a clean boost and dirt generator.

After going through literally a hundred ODs, I found my main box in Lovepedal's High-Power Tweed Twin. It's all I need 85 percent of the time. I bought the Tumnus to goose the HPTT when I want extra girth and sustain. It works beautifully for that. I rarely use the Tumnus on its own. I kick it in in front of the Lovepedal for the 'big' solos. In some rooms and with some backlines, it does sound pretty good on its own but the HPPT sounds better. Together they're a mighty mighty team.

All the Awesomeness I've come to expect from Wampler

By Bill from Lawrenceville, GA on December 13, 2023 Music Background: Way too many years of playing guitar to not be better at it.

The Tumnus Deluxe is a Klon clone with an EQ section and a bright switch. If you want a transparent overdrive, I haven't found a better one.

Tasty Tumnus

By Moose Coghill from Virginia USA on September 26, 2023 Music Background: Musician, Songwriter, Engineer over 50 years

I use tube amps' dynamic response for a wide variety of tones & genres. Over the years, have blown through most of the major OD & boosts from MXR, Boss, Fulltone, Ibanez, TC Electronic, etc., etc. Tend to go back to the MXR 10 band EQ, when I need something extra for anything from glassy cleans to driven harmonic distortion. Recently got some of my best tones in the studio with the Tumnus Deluxe. The +/- EQ is brilliant; from clean boost to pushing my amp over the top - this thing is sweet. A keeper for the toolbox, live & studio.

Terrific Tumnus

By Steve from Utah on September 13, 2023

Gotta make room on the pedal board to permanently mount this gem. What fabulous tonal bliss this pedal adds to the palette. Especially with the single coil Tele (Texas Specials) and Strat (custom shop 69's) thru the 65 Fender Princeton. Plenty of clean gain and/or dirt plus a wide range of options with tone controls. The "Hot" switch is very much loved as well. I don't use the buffer, but its there if you need it. Definitely a solid mid-range bump - some say its like a Klon...perhaps...but would also add some Tube-screamer tone to that as well - but unique in its own right. I play alot of blues and classic rock - perfect pedal. Does very well with humbuckers and high gain amps too - but the singles thru the fender....win. The only thing of concern to some may be the pedal (on or off...just plugged in the chain) really captures the single coil hum and amplifies it. It depends on where you are standing ref the amp. Standing right in front...noise from the coils louder. Off to one side or 10 feet away from amp..more normal noise.
I would buy another - great pedal.

Excellent Pedal

By Don P from Pensacola, FL on March 29, 2023 Music Background: Guitarist, Musician, Songwriter, Home Producer

Bought this as a Klon Clone and it works great as an 'always on' pedal to ramp up tone, or it can be more aggressively dialed in and driven to obtain a sweet to snarky or even howling overdrive sound. Does what it claims and well. The knobs onboard offer lots of ability to adjust and after a bit of experimentation, found the perfect position on my pedal board for the Tumnus pedal as well. Wampler makes great pedals.

Mystery Secret Sauce!!!

By Greg from MT on March 10, 2023 Music Background: 60 years on guitar.

This little unit Sounds and Responds like Nothing Else I have! The tone controls are totally effective no matter what level of gain is dialed up.
There is, as "Brian" has said, More Bass Available than will ever be needed. Quite unlike another company that also starts with a "W" that seems
to be afraid to design in enough Bass to suit me. I didn't hear any obvious difference between Buffer button in or out. If you have a chord or a
note ringing, and you hit the foot switch, You will hear a "POP" ....If no signal is going into it, and the foot switch is used, NOTHING is HEARD!
I suspect this is just the nature of the circuit. For total quiet operation, JUST STOP PLAYING FOR 1/2 OF A SECOND and you'll be fine. With the
GAIN on FULL, Toggle in Normal, and a Bridge Humbucker, it reminds me of Clapton & the Bluesbreakers. It will remind you of whoever you like.
The addition of the Normal --- Hot toggle switch is GREAT....it adds GAIN that the "golden original" cannot! It satisfies the "Wish I Had More" of
this great Sound--syndrome. It does the Clean Boost thing, Very Mild Dirt, and right on up the ladder. It can drain a battery in not too long. Just plan to use it with a power supply. At FULL Gain, it enabled me to get "USEFUL FEEDBACK" at the Bedroom Levels that I tested it! GET ONE NOW! And write your own story about their Unmatched Audio Superiority! Then thank Brian Wampler for his forward-thinking Design!

Great pedal !

you gotta understand

By Christian from Lakewood CO on September 28, 2022 Music Background: intermediate producer and songwriter

this is a intentionally light distortion that focuses on harmonic clarity while still qualifying as distortion. it's thick but somewhat transparent. i found i really had to dial mine in carefully and the effect varies greatly from single coil to humbuckers. i think it sounds best with single coils but that's just personal preference. you can make it sound good with anything. best clone in the zone.

The tone you've been looking for

By Beth Isbell from EUREKA, CA on September 9, 2022 Music Background: Working Musician

You. Yes, you. Have you been looking for THE right overdrive? This is it. It will improve all your tone problems. Your Angry Charlie or Waza Fuzz not doing the trick for you? Stack them in front of this thing. That's right, I said in front of the Tumnus Deluxe in your signal chain. With the level about 2/3 and the gain about 1/3, this thing adds beautiful grit and lovely tone to your "clean" sound. I'm funning my Waza Fuzz, a Super-Octave, a Blues Driver and an Angry Charlie, into a Keeley 4 knob compressor, followed next into the Tumnus Deluxe, then into a Keeley Katana. Running 2-4 of those drive pedals through the compressor (light compression) into the Tumnus, in any combination, sounds amazing. This thing has quickly become my main lead boost OD. I can fatten up the Tumnus overdrive by adding any of the pedals I mentioned above. This pedal adds pinch harmonics into your tone arsenal. Also when I ran just the Tumnus into my Katana boost, this feature becomes even more noticeable. Very usable. I have played through a lot of amps using a lot of guitars and pedals over the years, this pedal is the one thing I've been searching for to improve my tone. I've had a lot of great overdrives and distortions, but the Tumnus Deluxe simply kicks their ... through most amps and with most guitars. It just might be THE overdrive you've been looking for!

One of if not the best boost/OD

By Sweetwater Customer on August 24, 2022

An incredibly versatile and great sounding pedal that can easily go from mild breakup to classic rock. I use it as a tone shaper to help cut the bass and accentuate the mid and high frequencies. Would recommend going for the deluxe if possible as the tones available out of the 3 band EQ are incredibly useful. I tried it with the buffer on and off and found it better with the buffer out surprisingly. The tone seemed less compressed; however I have another buffer circuit before this one so that may be contributing to that. Glad that Brian Wampler made that option available externally. In addition, would recommend removing the internal battery if you are using a power supply.
To sum up: a fantastic boost and overdrive.

My absolute favorite Distortion pedal ever!!

By Jack Yang from NYC on June 14, 2022

I just did a 6.5 hour session with it and it is so awesome. I wouldn't use it for metal or anything like that, but it's great for Blues, Jam and anything where just need great tone. I never really ever wanted to switch it off. Really, it's so nice. It comes right after my Maxon OD-9 (Original Tube Screamer). I hardly used my Screamer the whole time. When you use them both?, look out

Just amazing

By Scott Klonowski on February 26, 2022

With the gain all the way down, it sweetens up the signal of the clean sound. With a little gain, it's a nice alternative to a tube screamer in front of other distortion pedals. What blew me away is when I cranked the gain all the way up and dialed the mids back - what an incredible sound! It is outrageously good.

The Tumnus Deluxe is definitely a family member of my pedalboard!

By Ben from White plains, NY on January 27, 2022 Music Background: Beginner always!

Well done Wampler! Good build and input output at the good place. The Tumnus going to do the job you expect but on better, with more trick-able possibility with the Bass, Mids, Treble and the Gain you can push more than a reasonable limits.
I play it with a Les Paul Standard and Stratocaster on normal position and buffer on, the Tumnus give me exactly the tone I was looking for my Stratocaster (EJ with Clapton noiseless pickups) I can not be more happy :).

Might be my favorite overdrive, EVER

By Tim from Jeffersonville, IN on December 24, 2021 Music Background: Gigging musician for 15 years

I've owned, and still own, many different types of drive pedals. This is one of the few I'll never sell. It can go from transparent boost, to full on hairy. It stacks great with other drives, and has plenty of low-end and volume to be your only drive pedal. The 3-band EQ is what makes it, though. Unless you need death metal distortion, go buy this pedal now and thank me later.

It’s a keeper!

By Kevin Lozano from Elk Grove, CA on December 14, 2021 Music Background: Studio musician 30 years

This just might be the best overdrive pedal I have ever played. The klon circuitry clone is amazing. I get so much dynamic response and rich harmonics from this pedal that I have never had before. There is a subtle feedback and articulation too each note that not only sounds good .. it feels good. This was an impulse buy and was going to return it after I ordered it but after playing with it for the first 10 min changed my mind

The Best Transparent Over-dirve

By Jim Daniels on November 7, 2021

I've owned many over-drive pedals in my time and must say by far the Tumnus is the best! You get that clean transparent over-driven tone, and when you dig in you get that nice break up. This pedal is awesome!!

Fantastic Overdrive

By Scott Young from Avon Lake, OH on October 25, 2021

This pedal sounds great and has a wide range of tones you can dial in. Having the EQ directly on the overdrive gives me more control, and the range of sound you can find with the gain control is huge. It goes from a clean Klon-esque sound to almost a distortion when you turn in all the way up and engage the hot switch. Simple to use and great sound.

For the longest time I was a RAT overdrive/Distortion guy. After much searching I can say this pedal is turning me into a Klon guy, it is amazing.

I don't know that there is a better overdrive.

By Peter Faden from LEADVILLE, CO on May 20, 2021 Music Background: Some dude somewhere.

This thing is versatile, first off. It can do whatever you want. For me, that translates to providing an amazing, JCM 800 to Peavey 5150 tone on its own, or stacked with a distortion for legitimate metal crunch and chug. You can also dial it back for a pretty on point Blues Driver tone. Versatile.

This is the one.

By Mike Hart from Illinois on January 2, 2021

Just as good as you think!

By Ran Zer from Israel on December 10, 2020 Music Background: Mostly play at home for own enjoyment

There is a reason why the Tumnus is revered.
With the additional EQ capabilities, this version is even more unbelievable.
Plug in any guitar into it, and it just sounds amazing.
Single coil, humbucker, solid body or semi-hollow, bridge, middle or neck (or any combination there off), direct into the amp or stacked into other gain stages (especially the Wampler Plexi drive - YUM!) - You just sound awesome with it.
There are just no wrong settings with it - but I especially love to put bass and treble at 12, mids at around 3'oclock, take the gain up to around 3'oclock or more and enjoy the glorious hard clipping of this legendary circuit.
Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

Nailed it

By Jim from Da' Burg PA on February 13, 2020 Music Background: 45 years in love with the guitar

I bought the first Tumnus (miniature pedal) when my Tone Monk Phoenix drive was inadvertently plugged into a 12V supply (sizzle sizzle pop). I panicked and wanted to capture that sound with another K-Clone. So I spent the money on this tiny pedal with not a lot of tone shaping capability as it turned out. Present day... I bought another Tone Monk Phoenix because I love the dang thing. But... I needed a dedicated Clean boost with tone shaping capabilities. I decided to take a chance on Brian's improved Tumnus. I love Brian's pedals, and I own many. I have a crap load of pedals but I specifically wanted a nice boost that was quiet with the ability to dial in a little bit of hair... tweak the mids and highs for solos and not break the bank. I gotta say... he nailed it on his second attempt. Wampler builds pedals that a guitarist would build if he were an electronics guru. I have not liked them all.... but I have never been disappointed in his effort, attention to detail and flexibility. In my case I was looking for a specific need but this pedal goes beyond that need, as his pedals usually do. I highly recommend this effort as it was well thought out and probably a result of feedback from guitarists that enjoyed the original Tumnus but wanted flexibility. It may not nail the K-type pedal. It does however kick my Archer's arse... offer more tonal variation that my Tone Monk Phoenix and plays nicely with all of the other pedals on my board.

I have been a guitarist for almost 45 years, I have discerning taste. I am very particular about tone and quality. I don't view a $200 pedal as much of an investment. That being said... I think that this pedal is a great investment from beginner to professional. Some pedals are media hyped, some V2.0 pedals are just an attempt at generating revenue. I believe this to be an offering that transcends budgetary and profit constraints when sending a pedal to market. Thanks Brian for putting the money men at bay and delivering a pedal for the discriminating guitarist. Try it before you buy it, but don't fear that this was an attempt to cash in on initial success. This one is vastly improved, at least from this guitarists ears. Original Tumnus... slightly used for sale now.

Wampler Tumnus Deluxe

By DNM from Maplewood, MN on December 21, 2019 Music Background: Amateur

I’d been missing the gain type that the Tumnus Deluxe gives. I’ve put it first in my chain and it stacks very well with the succeeding drive pedals, especially with a v1.7 OCD. I like the choice of buffered or bypassed. I recently purchased a Radial Twin City ABY Switcher, which has buffered outputs, so for a wet/dry mix it precedes the Tumnus and I can disengage the buffer of the Tumnus. Otherwise, I use the buffer in the Tumnus.

Great pedal

MY SALES ENGINEER JONATHAN APPLETON RECOMMENDED THIS PEDAL TO ME AND I AM SO GLAD I LISTENED. I HAVE THE VERTEC STEEL STRING AND THE IBANEX TS9 BUT WANTED SOMETHING THAT WOULD ALLOW THE STRINGS/NOTES TO RING THROUGH WITH SOME CRUNCH AFTER THE ATTACK. PULLED MY TS9 OUT AND INSTALLED THE TUMNUS AND WHAT A SOUND AND THE DELUXE ALLOWS ME TO TWEAK THE EQ EVEN MORE. MY STRAT, TELE, LP SOUND AWESOME TO ME THROUGH THIS WITH THE STEEL STRING AND MXR CARBON COPY WHICH JONATHAN ALSO RECOMMENDED TO ME... YOU CAN MAKE THIS PEDAL BE AS CUTTING OR AS WARM AND BUTTERY AS YOU WANT. IT IS ONE AWESOME PEDAL NEVER TURN IT OFF NOW...

Excellent Overdrive!

By Trev Morson from Aurora, IL on June 17, 2019 Music Background: Classic Rock

For those of you who use an overdrive pedal to slightly boost your primed high gain amp (think Eddie Van Halen with lots of squeals and harmonics), this is THE pedal.

It's more versatile than most other overdrive types. I bought this because my previous overdrive pedal, (Digitek CM-2 Hardwire Overdrive) clapped out after many years of hard use (it started hissing like crazy).

I liked it better with the side button out (true bypass), my pedals go through a looper anyway, but with this setting, it seemed to have more sustain than when pressed in and buffered?

I used "normal" gain (versus 'hot') since my EVH EL34 amp is cranked with tubed high gain. I had Bass setting at 2 O'Clock, Treble setting at Noon, Level at 2 O'Clock, and Gain at 10 O'Clock.

The Mid control on this is not like a MID control on an amp, when past the 2 O'Clock position, it sounds like a Wah Wah pedal on permanent deep setting (perfect for Schenker if you play his stuff) so I had it set at 2 O'Clock.
With these settings I got a very slight boost, and lots of screaming harmoincs and squeals with ease.
Great pedla, well worth the money!

Thanks to my sales/tec Ed Nystrom at Sweetwater as always.

Great Overdrive Pedal

By Shawn from SC on February 21, 2019 Music Background: Working musician

I have used an ibanez TS 808 for years as my primary crunch pedal. It's off my board now replaced by the Wampler Tumnus. It's a better sounding OD to me.

My experience is most gigging players have 3 or 4 basic sounds in their palette and then color them with time based effects. The sounds are: 1. Clean, 2. Slight gain, 3. Crunch Rythmn/blues and 4. Saturated lead.

The Tumnus fills the Crunch requirement nicely. The EQ knobs work well...I set mine at 12oclock, because the guitar tone is fine coming into it and the pedal does not color it much. If anything I add a little treble depending on the guitar I'm using The gain knob is smooth and gives a nice grit..I tend to land around 11 to 2 o'clock depending on the song. The volume knob WORKS. I cannot stress enough...this pedal will get loud.

If I had any concern, it is that the volume knob will push from slight foot contact and if you are not careful, the loudness will jump. This is just something to be aware of and adjust your aim when stomping.

WELL DONE BRIAN @ WAMPLER PEDALS!

I bought this product as a demo product and can i just say... This pedal is absolutely amazing. Nothing short of it. First
of all, i love narnia, and the graphics on this pedal are so cool! Looks aside, this pedal sounds great. This pedal alone is just incredible. The EQ is great, the hot switch is great, AND it has a built in buffer option. Great design, great look, great sound. I put it before a fulltone mosfet in my chain and i can get some serious gain from these two pedals. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR? Brian, you"re incredible. Keep on making great gear! As always, thanks Sweetwater!

Best Pedal Ever

By Sweetwater Customer from Kansas City on December 12, 2018

Absolutely blown away by this pedal. I was previously using an OCD, but I'm happy I made the switch! It's a beautiful transparent overdrive, but don't let that fool you - it covers the entire sonic spectrum and is super easy to use - the deluxe version is amazing because of the tonal crafting options - MY GOD this pedal just rocks. Also, shout out to my main man Paul Eckert for the being the best sales engineer ever. Big ups!

I hardly write reviews for anything, but I've been so in love with my Wampler Tumnus Deluxe that I felt the need to shout it from the mountaintops. This pedal has revitalized the joy of playing guitar for me. I'm using it with a single coil Tele and Vox AC-30/15. It has a little more bottom bump than other transparent overdrives which to me really completes the overall sound. The extra mid/bass knobs on the deluxe version are very handy altho I don't use them as often as I'd like. It's more helpful when I plug in different guitars other than my Tele. For gain, I'll use it between low and mid gain depending on the song. I don't hear any unwanted popping sounds when turning on/off as i read in the other reviews. So not sure what that's about. I first caught wind of this pedal from a klon clone shootout videos on youtube. It's just as good as I was hoping. And is so much more enjoyable hearing it on my own rig!

Never would have thought.

By David O. Brown from IN on June 29, 2018 Music Background: Played professionally for over 30 years

I have had my Fulltone OCD, as my number one OD sound for over ten years now, and I seriously, didn't think anything was ever going to kick it out of it's spot, on my board, but WOW. The Tumnus Deluxe, is absolutely amazing, with the amount of versatility that it has. Not many OD pedals can be ran through a perfectly clean amp, but with just the turn of the volume knob, go from smokey, to all out fire breathing, and clean up so good, by rolling the volume back off. I seriously could use JUST THIS PEDAL ALONE, and cover everything that I do, with very good results. This REALLY is as good as it's HYPE. Don't take my word for it, try one out, you'll be blown away.

This is to my ears and taste the perfect preamp stage ,Yes I said ( preamp stage ) the Gold color is a hint as to the amp I'm using it in,,, I wish It was built into my 100 w Marshall head, I may just have it done as the first stage of the game before the pre amp with its three 12ax7s hahaha I Love my new found friend with teeth if you get one just feed it all your 9v battery's even the ones you don't have or be smart and give it a one Spot 9V Dc adapter or never ending food supply and you will have a little monster in your amp

King of the Pedalboard

By Eric from Illinois on May 11, 2018 Music Background: (25 years) Original and Cover projects, (10 years) Worship Leader

Previously I had both a Shiba Drive and a Tube Screamer stacked on my board to get an overdrive tone close to what I wanted. Mr. Tumnus came along and could do what 2 pedals did...but way BETTER! The tones are what I have been chasing after for a long while. Big Chronicles of Narnia fan too, so that was a bonus.

I mainly use the toggle switch towards the "hot" setting (when playing my Strat). The Tumnus at any setting/toggle delivers a fantastic sounding overdrive and I love the 3 EQ dials which gives you even more tone control. The on/off is slightly noisy on mine as well (in response to other reviews) but not enough in my humble opinion to lower a 5 star rating....I just hide most of my switching rhythmically within the drum hits anyways.

Disclaimer: I have never played on a Klon, maybe I would like it more but this pedal is rightfully gold...because its tones very much are.

6 STARS******

By ASM from Indiana on March 23, 2018

This wonder can be used in a multitude of ways. I use it as the K style booster, using basically the same recommended settings in the manual. Without changing a single knob, it boosts the clean (Princeton) sound, the overdrive (ocd), the high gain (dirty little secret) and the fuzz ( Wampler velvet). It just compliments them all perfectly. A lot of players use an OD and a graphic eq pedal to get great solo sounds...I imagine that's very similar to what this thing is doing all by itself. Adding mids and highs, tightening bass and adding grit. I don't prefer this as a stand alone od over the ocd, but I think it's got to be one of the best boosters ever made. And the buffered bypass makes a noticeably better tone when pedal is off over true bypass. Last thing, if you dime the mid control it really sounds like the Slash half- cocked wah sound. Its the secret weapon you need to actually be heard in a full band situation.

I took the time to actually write to Wampler Pedals and tell them what sound I wanted, and what pedal by another manufacturer I wanted to replace. They got back to me two days later with two suggestions. This Tumnus pedal had a great demo by Pete Thorn on YouTube and I was quite impressed by the tones Pete got out of it. I ordered the Tumnus right away and two days later I had it in my pedalboard and I was just blown away, it's like Wampler asked me what I desired in my first stage crunch/mild gain pedal and built it for me. I am sold on this pedal, Wampler's customer service, and Sweetwater's prompt and speedy service. A five star rating all the way.

Exactly what I wanted out of the pedal.

By Kody from Northern Illinois on February 5, 2018 Music Background: Amateur

The Tumnus deluxe is what everyone says it is, a Klon Centaur clone and that's exactly what I wanted. It sounds great. It does what I want, from giving you a barley broken up cranked tube amp sound to much heavier. It stacks great with my OCD and Xotic EP boost pedals. I will definitely say the deluxe is worth the little bit of extra money. The three band EQ really does give you tonal control and the hot switch cranks up the gain very nicely.
Sweetwater gave me a great deal and I got the pedal in only two days, being in northern Illinois it's always very fast.

Absolutely love the Tumnus Deluxe!! Bought a demo to save. Pedal came in flawless condition...MINT! The tone of this pedal is far beyond my expectations! The gain and clarity is truly inspiring. I run this pedal into the clean channel of my tube amp. Easily enough gain for my main rock tone! Push this with a boost and you could solo for days! I've had no issues with popping! Definitely not my last Wampler pedal!! Did I mention "I Love this pedal"?!

I"ve owned the original version for a while now and love using it as a clean boost for coil taps on my PRS CE 24. It"s one amazing pedal so when this guy came out I had to check it out. This thing completely exceeded my expectations and even my band noticed the difference on my leads and overdrive tones through my Orange Rockerverb 100. 3 in 1 pedal , great boost, great crunch overdrive and great extra push too a already dirty amp ,I have had none of the popping others have had and no added noise 5 star pedal all the way everything I have always want in a boost/ overdrive pedal and then some great job wampler!!!

Awesome.

By Eric Duczkowski from NJ on December 4, 2017 Music Background: 16 years

This pedal is really good. It"s just as good as my JHS Morning glory. This is a little more versatile since I can use it for more applications due to the EQ. Which is why I gave it 5 stars. I use this as another lead channel instead of a boost. I think the original Tumnus is better as a boost. I can achieve many different sounds that are not only convincing and sound like a tube amp but FEELS like a tube amp. It sounds like an overdriven/distorted channel on modern or classic pushed amps. Easily could be a signature sound for someone. Blown away. PS: a little hidden feature on this pedal is to crank the mids all the way and you have a "wah" like effect. Subtle but just noticeable enough. Wampler and Sam H. from sweetwater, THANK YOU!

A Great Way To Get Other Famous Boutique Tones Out Of Any Amp

By Mark Groody from Chico, Ca. on October 17, 2023 Music Background: 50 years on Bass Drums Guitar playing it all except Lounge Jazz.

So instead of spending mega bucks on holy grail amps, goose your 6L6, KT88 EL34, Solid State based amp into a touch sensitive tone monster at low wattage. Added front end pre amping is the Boutique trick, and audiences can't tell if you have a Dumble, or a Fender, or why you ask the speaker to break up on 9 to go with your funny facial expressions as you drill holes in their ear drums. The only reason for 4-1/2" stars is it doesn't turm me into a Steveyjimmyeddieericcarlos clone playing wise.

Better than the original

By Alex Sasseen from Reno, NV on September 13, 2022

Sounds just like the original when you leave the bass and mids at noon and the switch at normal. However, I like adding/removing the bass and mids. The hot side circuit is pretty nice if you really want to use this as an OD/distortion v. a boost. If you only want the clean Klon boost tone, go for the original and save a buck. If you want more drive this is your pedal. Wish it had a red switcher for the circuits like the JHS morning glory, and maybe a color-changing LED to show what circuit you're using.

I use this as a heavy OD with an always-on Timmy running into it. The added EQ controls let me find the sweet spot for home play, and I can crank the treble to "cut through the mix."

Game changer

By Eric from San Diego on December 14, 2021

After messing with some cheaper OD pedals I decided to give the Tumnus a shot to see if it lives up to the hype. And it absolutely does. Gives such an authentic range of tones from bite to growl. The low end of my guitar was really feeling flubby and I was considering getting a new guitar, but with the Tumnus it sounds snappy and fresh. My only gripe is that there is a slight pop when tapping the pedal on. It's not a deal breaker, but I wish it wasn't there. Overall extremely happy with this OD.

Tumnus

By Sweetwater Customer on February 27, 2021

Good dirt pedal. It allows for a subtle amount of distortion, retains bottom end, and cleans up well with a reduction in guitar volume control. A very useful tool for getting a tasteful tube overdrive sound that is not overpowering. Great for Blues and Americana.

The Tumnus Deluxe OD

By Peter from Washington on November 19, 2020 Music Background: I don't play the bagpipes, too much breath.

The pedal rocks! Howev, not a big fan of the newly redesigned artwork on the the front. So..., I bought this pedal brand new (again) and removed the guts and merged them with the shell of the 1st year run of the Tumnus Deluxe pedal (please don't tell Wampler.) Anyhow, merged them with little effort and now I have the original case and artwork together with the new circuit board for the worlds best Tumnus Deluxe pedal. Please, again don't tell Wampler. Don't care if it voids the warranty. Not giving up my Mr. Tumnus artwork for no one LOL.

Wampler Tumnus Deluxe

By Oskar on December 11, 2018 Music Background: Longtime guitar enthusiasts

The Tumnus Deluxe is a new type of overdive pedal for me. I purchased the Tumnus to replace my aging TS9. I never owned a K type pedal, but I own the Wampler Ego compressor and really like the versatility. After reading a lot of reviews I decided to purchase both the Tumnus and Clarksdale overdrives. Especially since they were on sale during Sweetwater"s Black Friday.

Both the Tumnus and Clarksdale are well built, outstanding pedals. I would give 5 stars to both except for the fact I have only had them for a little more than a week. The TS9 is simple to use; level, tone, drive... the Tumnus is much more; fully EQ, volume, gain, toggle boost. You can really zero in on that specific tone you are looking for. Most pleasing is the great transparent boost and warm tones you get. The Tumnus seems to accentuate the tonal characteristics of my amps, not replace it. I have used the Tumnus with my Blues Junior, AC15, Laney Ironheart, and Egnater Tweaker. It feels like it almost becomes a part of you amp. I have been running mostly clean and adding volume and grit with the Tumnus.... wow, very nice with lots of headroom. The true bypass or buffered toggle is a great design, although the Tumnus buffer color is almost preferable to me.

Still learning the secrets of the Tumnus, but so far I do not regret the purchase at all.

Great Pedal

By Shannon from Indiana on December 11, 2018

Getting some really nice sounds from this pedal. very versatile overdrive with excellent adjustments. I don"t think it has quite the build quality of my MXR pedals but it certainly doesnt feel like junk either. I"m running it through a boogie mark v25 and like what I hear.

Impressive

By Paul from Ironton, Ohio on November 17, 2018 Music Background: 35+ years, Rock, Country, Contemporary Christian

After researching many overdrive pedals, I decided to get the Tumnus Deluxe. I originally planned to buy the mini, and still believe it would have been fine . When I first fired it up, I was underwhelmed. Couldn't really find what I wanted at lower gains. But when I cranked the gain a little, WOW. Huge smile, Just what I wanted. The reason for a 4 1/2 is that the three tone controls, while useful, are not completely transparent. The pedal imparts a small bit of mid-range to the tone. I wish there was a center detent on the tones which would render them completely off. But still, I get an awesome overdrive tone with this pedal. I mostly play a Strat through a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Good luck.

exactly what I have been looking for.

By Richard Scott from Hendersonville, TN on January 18, 2018 Music Background: 27 years playing

I've been looking for something that would add grit while keeping the articulation with the sound when I'm chording. Pretty much everything I've tried so far either mushed up the chords in a bassy fuzz or had a shrill top end. This pedal doesn't do that. It gives me what I want AND has the ability to add way more gain if I want it. The buffer adds a noticeable top end sheen to the sound too, of course you don't have to engage it if you prefer true bypass (I thought I did until I heard this one). If I didn't have so much money tied up in pedals already I'd probably get two or three of these and have them set to low medium and higher gain settings, that's how good this pedal is.

The review misses a half star because the switch pops a little when you engage it and it's not a huge deal but it's annoying.

Awesome.....except for one thing.

By Brian Saltos from Bronx, NY on December 27, 2017

I had previously tried out the original Tumnus in another store and liked it very much. Once I saw this one I jumped for it.

Hands down this pedal is amazing. The additional EQ was definitely something that I liked about the Deluxe vs the original Tumnus. The only thing that is causing me to return this is the annoying popping sound that happens when you on/off the pedal.

I originally ordered the pedal from Sweetwater with Cody and thought this is probably one of the best investments I made. Turns out when I got the pedal I noticed a popping in the signal when I turned the pedal on and off. I first hooked up my guitar direct to the Deluxe and straight into my audio interface and noticed the pop. Once I ran it through my Bugera V22 the pop was more noticeable.

An article was published soon after the release on Wampler"s site stating they realized the issue on certain units. I followed the instructions on the article and set up a replacement for the unit. According to the article if the serial number starts with an M it"s a unit that has already been fixed.

Wampler shipped me out a new unit and immediately when I plugged it in I got the same results. At this point I waited about 2 weeks to get this replacement pedal. Feeling a little bummed out about the popping I reached out to Cody again and let him know of my issue. Cody hands down has been my go to guy every time I make a purchase here and was very prompt about helping me out. Cody was willing to help send a replacement but only after checking other units in stock to make sure the same popping noise doesn"t occur.

It turns out according to a rep from Wampler, the popping noise is part of the pedals nature and many other units have the same issue.

That being said if you"re going to buy this pedal it sounds amazing. The only thing to look out for is the popping noise that comes with it. I give is a 4.5 just because of that. Other than the popping I like the sound of the pedal and am still satisfied with the service I received here at sweetwater. Thank you all and especially to Cody for helping me in the process. I will be making a return/exchange.

A definite improvement

Tumnus OD

Have gone through a few pedals looking for the right tone to meet my needs in my classic rock band. Have used a Fulldrive 2 for a long time and it's fat and smooth. Like other Wampler pedals this one has more bite and high end so a more aggressive at full bore but rock sound simmers down to a smoother crunch at lower gains. Always a matter of taste and ears but so far I like it. Has that extra edge that I don't get on the Fulldrive, but still getting used to it/

I like it, didn't keep it

By Dane Whylie from NC on October 30, 2019

The tone stack on this pedal is brilliant, perfect for use with any amplifier.

I don't like the quality of the clipping sound, it's kind of dark and weird to me, not "open." Not "amp like."

I own two very high end Klon recreation pedals so I have a reference point with this kind of circuit. In comparison to the Wampler, those pedals are incredibly amp like in their response.

It's an interesting take on the K-pedal but ultimately I found it lacking.

Great pedal

By Bill Tice from Shreveport, Louisiana on May 31, 2018 Music Background: I've been guitar for 40 years

Really nice tones! Tweak it just right and it yields some convincing blackface tones. Play with with it some more and it gives up plexi-type tones as well. It dones a fairly convincing Klon style boost. It can also work as a mid-hump style pedal if you want it to. It plays nice with other drive pedals. For what ever reason, I've noticed that the pedal wants to be pushed a little bit harder before it really comes alive. Not necessarily a negative just a characteristic about it. Over all this pedal is very versatile. I like it!

Low Gain Setting Is Good

By Daniel Fennessey from Houston, TX on March 22, 2024 Music Background: Studio Musician / Composer /Engineer

I bought the Tumnus Deluxe based on hype...which I don't usually do because there are so many fan boi's out there for all kinds of gear. The comments for this pedal seemed to be legit. I just finished comparing this pedal to my Audio Alchemy modified Soul Food pedal(silicon diodes replaced with Germanium diodes like the original Klon). The modded Soul Food sounds just like an original Klon...super transparent, great harmonic overtones, great articulation as you would expect from a real Klon pedal. The Tumnus DLX low Gain setting can get close to this sound...had to dial back the bass to about 10 o'clock and bump the mid, treble, and gain up a bit. It sounds good, but different than a Klon does..the main reason I wanted it is to have a Klon type pedal with 3 band EQ instead of just tone. The Soul Food sounds richer harmonically still. The high Gain setting on the Tumnus sounded woofy in the bass..I didn't care for it too much and it was noisy as others have complained. Not what I was expecting.

Compresses tone

By Sweetwater Customer from Orlando, FL on December 29, 2018

Great snappy sound to the overdrive but I wasn't impressed by the dynamics in the low to mid gain range as it seems to compress the signal. That is great for some people, but wasn't for me. Just something to be aware of before you buy. I compared it side by side with the Ibanez Tx9Dx Tube Screamer and thought the Tube Screamer had a notable warmer tone with better dynamics and similar sounding overdrive breakup in low to mid gain range (especially with the setting on TX+ on that pedal). Just my preference and observations.

On off switch loud popping audio sound

By Lee from Florida on February 24, 2018 Music Background: Guitarist

This pedal sound awesome, when you step on the on off switch ,you will hear audio noise from your speaker. Very bad.i had to return two units. I will get one again if it be corrected.

Great tone, but loud pop when turned on or off

By Matt W. from PA on January 19, 2018 Music Background: Hobbyist, 25 years

This pedal has amazing, and versatile tone. It acts well as a clean boost, to subtly thicken your tone, or to give you a big drive sound (think more of a rumble like a Harley than a buzzing like a Suzuki). By modifying the EQ knobs, you can get totally transparent sounds, scooped mids, boosted mids, or anything else. The only knock on the pedal is that it is incredibly loud when I turn it on or off. The sound comes loudly through the amp, not just from the mechanics of the foot switch itself. Using a decibel meter on my phone, with the amp settings identical, it registered 10dB higher than turning on my next loudest pedal (spiked to 80dB from a background of 48dB). And you don't want to have your delay engaged, because you'll hear the pop over and over. I don't gig, so it's more of an annoyance than a problem, but I can't see anyone gigging with this without using a pedal switching system. For $... it seems like this shouldn't be an issue.

Great but!

By Geo Arceo from Jamaica, NY on April 10, 2024

I ordered two and I returned them, This pedal is awesome but the switch and toggle that came in the two pedals were not like it shows in the picture, they were pretty bad quality, it supposed to look like the Dracarys. Hope Wampler can fixes that because I like his pedals and the guy is cool, but they have to be more careful on using quality parts to their pedals.

The good and the bad

By DDP from Edgewood, WA on January 6, 2018 Music Background: Studio Musician, Producer

The pedal sounds great, I use it mostly for the mid-bump and not so much the gain. The pedal does have some issues that aren't really a deal breaker but something to consider- yes it's got a high noise floor compared to other pedals. Yes there is a pop in the switch when you step on it. Next up is maybe something only I've run into....Twice. The first unit I received would last about 30 minutes, then if I switched it off then on again the light would blink like it had a dead battery and it would shut down. Went through 4 batteries testing the issue. Wampler tech support had me try a couple things and then agreed to replace it (never an issue with a power adapter). The replacement unit has the exact same problem but lasts almost an hour before hitting the issue. I tested with 4 new batteries again and still an issue. I told the Wampler tech support about the repeat issue but relayed to them I'd just keep it and run off the AC power adapter. Inconvenient yes but in my area UPS, FedEx and the Post Office all have issues delivering to my house so that creates another issue I'd rather not deal with. Both pedals were the "M" pedal so maybe just bad luck on my part or a QC problem on their part- Tech support guy was very timely and professional in his replies. 4.5 stars if the battery wasn't an issue, does sound great.

Awesome, But...

By Kevin on January 3, 2018 Music Background: Gigger retired to Hobbiest

I always wanted to experience the hype behind that Klon mystique, so I took a chance and ordered the Tumnus Deluxe only based on it's predecessors ratings. The Tumnus deluxe, as far as it's overdrive and tweaking capabilities are concerned, I was impressed. Lots of tone sculpting options here. The two things that made me return this pedal were; the popping noise with the footswitch and the high noise-floor. There was an annoying hissing noise (even after the "mod" return I did with Wampler) even with all the dials at zero. This was not acceptable to my for my situation. I ended up exchanging this pedal for a Wampler Euphoria and I could not be happier. I would also like to thank Tim H. here at Sweetwater for being sooooo accommodating and helpful as usual!

noisy hiss pedal for me

By Paul from TX on June 16, 2020 Music Background: heavy fusion

I got one of these when they first came out and had to return it, the lvl of hiss I was getting was just not usable. Never had problems w another pedal in my chain and I run a huge board. I love the whole Klon thing and its buffer, but at the time I tried this one, swing and a miss for me. Usually I like Wampler stuff, maybe I had a bad one or they have done some fixes but noise and hiss in my board is just not kosher for me. The real Klon does not have this issue.

wampler does it again

By Sweetwater Customer from NM on September 14, 2019 Music Background: professional

At first I thought this was going to be a winner in my search for a new, clear overdrive. I found the Tumnus Deluxe lacking in an open, large bass sound. I don't mean metal heavy bass, but rich in depth. Instead, the bass was artificial sounding. Equally important is the low gain drive tone, and this was lacking. Finally, the pedal has a rather noticeable midrange squawk which does not EQ well. When played side by side and compared to my Timmy overdrive, this pedal did not measure up in these three important areas. The irony here is that the Tumnus is supposed to be the clean, clear, transparent overdrive based on a legendary pedal. This pedal is not transparent and it does take over your guitar's tone. This is something I have now found in many Wampler pedals - your guitar is no longer your guitar. This is not okay.

Tummy’s Deluxe

By Sweetwater Customer from Illinois on May 4, 2019 Music Background: Semi professional Musician

I bought this pedal and returned it the next day. It sounds good but it makes a loud hissing noise when engaged,
even with all the knobs set to zero. I have 3 other overdrive pedals and I connected each one with the same cables I used on the Tummnus just to make sure it was not a bad cable. No hiss from any of them only from the Tummnus.
Hiss was so bad it was unacceptable. If they fix this problem
I might consider buying one again. As for now I"ll pass.

Great Pedal, Almost! Get the Regular Tumnus, not the Deluxe

By Sweetwater Customer on December 1, 2018

Let me start by saying that this pedal provides an AMAZING tone! A fantastic klon clone with a three band EQ and "Hot" switch really puts this pedal at the top of my list. Honestly, I would give this pedal 6 stars if it weren't for a few major flaws.

The failure with this pedal is that the pedal was designed to provide a MASSIVE level output. It reminds me of the older cheap solid state amps that hiss all the time even when everything is turned down. If you turn every knob to zero, this pedal hisses when active. If you are going for the clean to edge of breakup tones that this pedal was designed for, you will have a ton of hiss in your recordings. Not cool. The sad thing is that it doesn't have to be this way. The level knob doesn't have to go much above 9 o'clock to achieve unity, and the noise in the rest of the circuit doesn't even become apparent until you are past 12-1 o'clock. If you cranked the level on this thing, it would overload everything past it!

The other problem with this pedal is that it emits a loud "pop" every time you turn it off and on. Again, this is a classic sign that the gain on the outputs is set WAAAAAAYYYY too high.

Ironically, the regular Tumnus pedal does not suffer from either of these problems. It's a really great pedal, and I end up returning my Deluxe and getting the original. I really would have preferred the deluxe. I love having an EQ, but I've never had a pedal this noisy, even when I used a cheap DOD metal pedal. I can't recommend this one. :(

Check the forums and you'll find a lot of people complaining about this. Brian Wampler knows about the problem, so now the question is whether they decide to address it. It's not fixed as of 12-1-2018. If they fix it, this is a 5 star pedal for sure.
