DigiTech Trio+ Band Creator and Looper Pedal Reviews

Band Creator Effects Pedal with Automatic Bass and Drum Parts, 12 Genres, 12 Styles, Variable Tempo, Individual Volume Controls, Effects Loop, Looper, SD Card Expansion, 5-part Loop Sequencer, and Power Supply

The DigiTech Trio+ band creator and looper pedal is one of the most powerful practice, writing, and performance tools a guitarist can ask for. The basis of the pedal is DigiTech's popular Trio technology that listens to your playing and automatically plays bass and drum accompaniment. But the DigiTech Trio+ offers five additional genres for getting the right feel. An onboard looper lets you lay down rhythm guitar parts for each loop. And the DigiTech Trio+ lets you store and sequence these loops any way you choose to build full songs for your performances.

Worst pedal but it's a digitech. Should have known better. Good luck playing any riff above turtle speed.

Tempo is always too fast

By Edward F. from Peyton, CO

The Trio+ Drummer only knows how to play in a Polka Band.

If the TRIO+ is experiencing issues with the tempo being too fast, it may be due to a failure of the Tempo Encoder or other internal components. Users have reported that the device can sometimes hold tempo correctly for some parts but not for others, leading to a mix of playback at the correct tempo and parts that slow down or speed up unexpectedly. This can be a sign of a failing Tempo Encoder or other internal issues with the device. It is recommended to contact a local authorized service center for a thorough inspection and potential repair or replacement of the Tempo Encoder.

Does not work as advertise

By Edward F. from Peyton, CO

The Band learning features are very buggy. After the band learns the song the playback features are insanely too fast. Over half of the time the looper does not work and does not light up and turn red. I have to dump the song I was working on to reset the looper. Does not work at all like the YouTube instructional videos.

Should be Better

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: 30 + years with keyboards

The idea of a drum and bass track is what hooked me. The kit contains too many power cord plugs but little info other than quick start. No where mentioned that an owners manual existed. It does online. When you pay good money for a product a few pieces of instructions should be included. The main reason I'm returning it is the syncing the parts with the originals. Starting, ending, and other operations require too much timing and dancing on the switches.

Awesome tool!

By James B. from North Carolina
Music Background: Guitar player and worship team.

Great pedal but some times it's hard to get just the right "feel" on certain songs. Maybe it will get easier after more practice with it.
It is a must have when bass players and drummers can't be found.

Revealing! Thank you Sweetwater

By Sweetwater Customer from Myrtle Beach
Music Background: 50 years

Amazing product, never seen anything like it, especially like the small footprint. The Trio + is a tool that you need to learn how to use, those that unfortunately post negative results perhaps need to consider their musical weaknesses instead of the system. Had mine almost a year and it just gets better and better. Favorite is to lay down a basic track and explore other genres with the loop, taking a country song to a hip hop genre for example can sometimes sound incredible. The hours of exploration and hours of enjoyment makes it a great musical investment. Understand it's not for everyone though.

Great Drum Machine

By Sweetwater Customer from North Bend, WA
Music Background: Going on 40 years of fun

That's all I really use it for. Every once in awhile, when the planets and moon are in perfect alignment, I'm able to figure it out enough to lay down a track to play along with. It's actually only happened once in the year and a half I've owned it. After that, you forget and then have to try and figure it out all over again. I'm not blaming the unit for this. That's all me. I just don't have the time. But for drums it's great. Easy to use. Great sounds.

Nice bit of gear.

By Sweetwater Customer

Whether for practice or using in live performance this is a neat little thing. Still learning how to use it effectively but the ability to instantly get a halfway decent backing track and then being able to loop over it offers a lot of possibility. Learning curve was not bad, especially if you already know how to use a regular looper. I use this for practice (playing to a metronome all the time does get boring) but can see the benefits when performing once I'm familiar with how it works.

Great practice and jamming tool. Not *that* hard to use.

By Rich T.

I wonder how many people complaining the Trio+ is too complex actually bothered to read the manual. Yes, it has a lot of features crammed into it, so it has a bit of learning curve, but if you actually follow the instructions the controls are pretty intuitive. I was able to lay down a backing track and loop within an hour of unboxing it. A few things:

- When teaching the band creator, you get best results using simple unsyncopated strums (read the manual). The more you try to embellish the more you'll "confuse" the band. Save the embellishments for the looper. Using a click track also helps. As with every looper ever, your timing is everything.
- Some genres do seem to have better "bands" than others. I really like the R&B genre - great for funk, surf, and raggae. If something seems off, try toggling the styles (or reteach the band).
- Placement in your chain matters, and definitely make use of the effects loop. At first the Trio wasn't as good at picking up my guitar when placed last at the end where my looper normally goes. It would have to strum harder to get the band creator to start listening. It also added a good amount of hissing noise in series. Putting my entire pedalboard in the Trio's send/return loop solved both problems.

I haven't played around with the song part creator much yet, but for quickly generating backing tracks for practice or jamming, this thing is great. Best looper I've owned. Totally worth it.

Great concept, iffy execution

By Ellen B. from Danville, KY
Music Background: rock, jazz, acoustic, playing for over 50 years, solo and in groups.

I've owned this for over a year but have only been trying to use it with a set of cover songs for a couple weeks. It's so complex it's driving me crazy. I also ordered the FS3X footswitch, it should arrive tomorrow, hope it helps. Anything to make this easier to use. Nothing else on the market does what this does, but trying to decode all the little LEDs is very difficult. I thought it was just me or a defective unit, but I see plenty of other people struggling with this pedal, so I know it's Digitech's fault. Sorry to say.

Trio Plus will make you or expose your lack of patience....

By Just s. from PC/ Fla
Music Background: This That and the other.

I've had a Trio Plus for Years now...It was a challenge at first. But I finally waded into it with surprising success..I've seen several musician reviews copping out on it. Simply because they had no patience or understanding of how the device works. WELL MY FRIENDS...GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO DON'T GIVE UP....I have found ways to use mine that aren't even written in the manual. YOU MUST FEEL THE FORCE OF THE TRIO.. THEN IT WILL BE STRONG WITH YOU..

Digitech Trio+ Band Creator and Looper

By Kenneth from AR
Music Background: Pro/Instructor/Educator/Critic

I have used devices of this nature a good portion of my musical career and consider myself to be an above average artist. The Trio+ has a good quality sound. The individual volume controls for the bass and drums are good for control. The footswitches on any brand of device will vary from the down stroke or up stroke within a few milliseconds which should be understood by any musician. I've yet to dive very deep into the Trio+ but I'm expecting great results. I am an owner of several Digitech products and have yet to find any major problems.

Trio+ Band Creator and Looper: A Huge Disappointment. Not Worth the Price. Avoid if you value control!

By Pat B. from South Florida

The Trio+ struggled to accurately capture the nuances of my playing style, often producing generic, uninspired accompaniment. The limited customization options and lack of control over the generated parts made it difficult to achieve the desired sound. Additionally, the short return window prevented me from thoroughly testing the device before deciding.

While the Trio+ might be suitable for beginners or those with simple song structures, it falls short for more experienced musicians seeking a reliable and versatile accompaniment tool. Given its shortcomings and the high price point, I cannot recommend this product.

Returning the Unit

By Arthur N. from Leland, NC

I was excited when I watched all the positive reviews on YouTube stating how great this unit is. I spend about 5 hours trying to get this to work. The drum patterns it crates are OK, but the bass lines are just awful, and off key. I tried playing full chords, and then just single bass notes, and the unit spit out one awful track after another. It seems like this idea has some great potential, however, the Trio+ is not ready for any serious use.

Don’t waste your money

By Glen W. from Iowa
Music Background: 50 year veteran musician and guitar player.

Too complicated to use with the multi function knobs and multi colored LED array you have to try and get all in the right sequence to do anything with it. The vague two page start manual may as well stayed in the box. I had one brand new out of the box and read the manual seven times over with and without going through each step on the thing and never did get more than one song on it purely by accident then couldn't find it again. After a few hours of trying after a week with it I was ready to run over it with my truck.

Over engineered

By Glen W. from Southwest Iowa
Music Background: 50 year guitarist and drummer with many bands over the years.

As it is in my opinion it's a disappointing piece of expensive technology. If you're old school with music gear I'd recommend staying away from it. They crammed too many functions into a small box with multi function knobs and led lights that all have to be in a certain mode in combination with each other to do what it's supposed to do. If they'd made the thing one inch bigger with one or two more dedicated knobs and led lights it might be useful for us older guitarists.

I couldn't figure it out.

By Carlos A. from Englewood, NJ

On paper this sounds wonderful. I pictured going to a gig and having the drums and bass accompany me on my repertoire. No such luck! The thing just does whatever it wants and the bass and drums are no help. On the video, the guy just plays a couple of chords and the bass follows. It didn't happen that way for me. I usually perform by myself with drum machines, you need more than one drum machine because they have a tendency to die on you in the middle of a gig. So you have to be prepared for that. I figured TRIO was my solution. Unfortunately it just let me down. Why can't they make something simple? There's so much going on you need to be a PHD in Rocket Science to figure this out. Sorry but this was a waste of good money and a lot of time and frustration. Get yourself a real bass player and drummer and avoid all these promises that don't deliver. No disrespect to anybody. I'm sure there are many people that figured this out and are even now using to their needs. My experience was different.

Not a time keeper

By Mark
Music Background: Pro guitarist...

The main problem with this unit is no metronome or will not let you select the drum patterns to record to...this would have solved the problem your rhythm sinking with the drums pattern the looper selects...I sent mine back as so many times the drums were way out of whack ...I've been playing professionally for years and my sense of timing is good ...really hope they could fix this problem to make this the coolest looper .

The Best Practice Tool Ever. Period.

By Chris H. from MYRTLE BEACH, SC

I should have bought this years ago. I've had it less than a week, and I've used it for hours each day since it arrived. This is such a well-thought-out piece of gear. First, I'm amazed at how easy to understand and use this pedal is. The learning curve is less than 10 mins if you watch a few short online videos. I also love the different output options. You can send all the sound to your amp, all the sound to a full speaker system or mixer, or split the signal so that the bass and drums go to a full speaker system and the guitar comes out your dedicated guitar amp. You can also send all the sound through the usb into your DAW. OR, last but not least, you can simply plug in headphones and quietly create your masterpieces. In addition to the ease of use and output options, I am amazed at how well this product recognizes chord progressions and develops a bass/drum backing. If if has problems recognizing the song, then it's easy to resolve by simplifying the strumming or providing power chords or root notes. In all honesty, though, this has rarely been a problem. Finally, saving songs/tracks is extremely easy, and they're easy to locate and play after they're saved. All in all, this is a fabulous product. Make sure you get the FS3X pedal to go with it. That makes the product much easier to use. You can keep the Trio+ at arm level for adjusting the genres and styles and control the looper and band functions with your foot. Brilliant!

More than just a looper

By Michael T. from OMAHA, NE

I don't have any musicians friends and I rarely get a chance to leave the house, so this pedal has been a game changer for me in regards to learning. I thought I had pretty decent timing before, but you don't realize how sloppy you are until you have to play with drums and bass. In the week I've owned this, I feel like I've progressed so much in my understanding of music, how it's structured, rhythm, and countless other items I can't think of right now. This pedal is so much more than just a looper. It's a one man band maker, a teacher, a looper. Now that Digitech is back, I hope they expand the capabilities of the Trio+ even more. I'd happily buy an even more upgraded version.

Nice Tool to Have

By Len

I got this during the pandemic when I wasn't able to play in a band. It works well, but I wish it wasn't so complicated to use (each button does at least 2 things).

It paid for itself when it came up with a great bass line for a song, one that I would never have thought of.

Trio + accolades

By John from Chicago metro area

I got the Trio + about 5 years ago, and after too short of a learning curve time on my part, I tried to introduce it as a backing "band" to the acoustic trio I was part of at. The other two musicians instantly mocked it as a "Wurlitzer " old rhythm box and dismissed me off . I wasn't adept at the Trio + yet, but I was deflated, and put the Trio back into storage, thinking I made a wrong purchase. Fast forward to Covid. After the 2 years of isolation, my two bands disbanded. I noticed that the venues we used to play were now only hiring solo and duo acts, obviously for financial reasons. I decided to try, for the first time in my 50 year playing career, go solo. Bought a PA, and brought the Trio + out of storage. OMG. I have the performing career I always dreamed of, and playing with electronic "musicians" that bring no drama or ego to the gigs. I wouldn't go back to the headaches of bandmates for anything due to this great piece of technology. The Trio + is just complex enough to be simple to use, yet doesn't require an IT degree to operate. No annoying menu option screens. Very well thought out! My only suggestion is to increase the song storage capacity in some way. I know you can swap cards, but a unit with a 50 song library would be ideal! Perhaps a Pro version, or an external mini hard drive for existing units?

What band?

By DAN
Music Background: Everything

I've had this for a few years now and use it in performances since then. As a former combo member (lead guitar/vocals) it was easy to figure out. Like a band, one must bring a song and teach the other players (base/drums/rhythm) the body of the song. In a way, the Trio plus is very similar. I have "processed" close to 100 songs and store them on my laptop. For a 2-hr. performance I download 24 songs (2 chips) and I'm good to go. This, along with the boss VE-2 harmonizer and various pedals, mixer and powered speaker allow me to perform as a band. Don't hate me....I'm old and have done my time with all the drama. If you've played in a band, seriously played in a band, it's an easy win. Give it a try.

By Kevin S. from Keaau, HI
Music Background: Been playing most of my life.

Fountain of inspiration

By Geo H. from California
Music Background: Guitarist, vocalist, percussionist 40+ years

As many have said, this box is great for inspiring and developing musical ideas. I had tried some other loopers and the way the looper works in the Trio Plus works really well for me - arm the looper, start playing to engage, stomp to end and set the loop length, then any overdubs start automatically at the loop point. Easy peasy. The bass and drum samples are high quality and pleasingly varied. Super creative and versatile tool for practice, song development, and live performance.

1 main problem !

By Mark S.

I bought this and returned it! After repeated trys I realized the problem with the pedal is it has no metronome or let you select the drums to record to ...which makes it difficult for the unit to come up with a matching pattern. I tried several times to record blues tempos it couldn't come up with the proper beats ...if they made the unit so you could record to a drum pattern of your choice the unit would be perfect ...I don't understand why they went this route for recording without drums in the first place

Great Tool for Soloing Practice, Easy to Use

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Guitar- advanced intermediate

After having the usual and frustrating experiences of dealing with live musicians, whether in a band or just creative jam sessions, I needed a device that could fill in drums and bass so I could working on solo improvisation. I spent many hours reading about bass and drum machines, but the learning curve on those is steep, and more for professional musicians. I needed something that didn't require lots of time to get basic bass and drum lines. I must say, from the get go I was impressed- easy setup guide can have you creating basic bass and drum loops in minutes. Simply a great tool for solo guitarists who want something more than backing tracks. With the push of a button, the bass can revert to simple bass and alternating bass. Tempo and style controls give you control of the loops drum and bass tempo. The genre button has a selection of blues, rock, metal, etc when creating a loop. While I haven't tried all the advanced functions yet, as I don't need them, I have tried creating the bass and drum loops by breaking a long song into smaller loops. The sequencing control automatically joins all your loops to play as one. The
All in all, a great tool for that solo "" guitarist who simply wants to create custom backing tracks to suit their playing style.

The very best!

By Dan
Music Background: Jazz, classic rock, country, pop, Motown, Bossa Nova Whatever someone will pay me for.

I've had this pedal for quite some time now, and, can say with confidence, it is the best piece of musical equipment I have ever owned.
I played in "top 40" bands for a long time which means a new son or two every week. Whomever was to be the lead player on the song would present to the other band members a simplified version broken down into segments. (beginning, middle, and end. That's what you do with the TRIO+. It acts as the other band members. You tell it what to do and it does it! I take the processed song with loop and perform as a band. If you sing, like I do, all the better. If this one failed, I would buy another immediately. It's that good!

I wish I knew about this thing sooner

By Eric O. from Phoenix, AZ

I'm working with several music projects, one of which is an acoustic duo. I really wanted to include a percussionist into the mix to fill things out, but the Trio + does one better, it also adds bass (and a looper should I need that feature). We now have a rhythm section that doesn't need to get paid after each gig ;) I'm still discovering how useful the Trio + can be to make the acoustic project sound bigger than just me on guitar. Big shout out to Mark Magdich, who pointed me in this direction. The Trio + is easy to use, as I have yet to read the tiny manual thats included.

Needs Better Documentation

By Glenn

This thing is fun, and it really does get you excited about practicing, but it has 3 flaws that I wish Digitech would address. First and foremost, documentation. It has a single page manual (folded up), for a product that really needs a LOT more than that. Second, the when using the mixer out it only sends the bass and drums to the mixer (or in my case, a 2nd amp), so no matter what you do, you can't make the loop (guitar) go to a different source than your live playing. So if you have a really clean guitar loop, with a distorted solo over it, they are both coming through the same speaker. Lastly, and this is more personal preference, but EVERY single "Metal" preset is thrash (thrash with an H, not trash). Basically, someone at Digitech thinks that metal has one tempo and genre only, and it's very fast thrash. Sure, you can turn down the tempo knob, but then it sounds silly.

Would I buy it again, yes. Mainly because it makes practice even more fun than before. But I wish those 3 issues were addressed.

By STEVEN r. from CA
Music Background: Hobbiest

I purchased this unit over a week ago. Have been playing with it now for about a week.
I can tell you straight up it's a piece of JUNK.

• No volume control out of the pedal.
• No on/off on the pedal itself
• Doesn't track well at all. Even using single strums per measure, which his extremely annoying.
• Seems to pick its own style on playback whether I set it or not. Impossible to control.
• Overall The base and drum sound quality is poor.
Don't trust it for live paying.

it going back - don't waste your money..

Every Guitarist Needs One

By Down S.
Music Background: Rock, Blues, NWOBHM Metal, Funk

I've got around 35 years under my belt. Watched a lot of players around my area put the instrument down in those years. Life gets in the way. Lost interest. Stuff like this was science fiction at best way back then. The Trio + makes me sticking with it all the more satisfying. It's hard to find musicians around me that check the boxes. It's not a laundry list of boxes yet this is the norm. The Trio + fills that void. Shot of juice really. I still have a passion for the guitar. I like to come up with ideas so in the process of teaching it sometimes these ideas come out different than i intended and most for the better. I have a rhythm section that can handle any style. Real bass players are even more rare.

Lot of reviews have gone into depth so i don't want to be redundant. I honestly have no fault with this box. I used the original Trio for years so the upgrades included in the + i already knew the benefits. I have mine and the FS3X footswitch connected to my Helix out to KRK monitors and sub. It took up 2.5 loops on my Helix but i have it connected in a way that bypasses anything cab sim related on the Trio +. Drums are unaffected and all guitar cabs and effects are Helix. Even some final processing of all instruments through compression and reverb. Sounds really good to me. I'm a die-hard tube amp guy also.

Just get one. Even aside from being able to create this box is about the best practice tool out there in my opinion. Any mode, scale or whatever you might be weak on you can work on that without any worry until you get it down. I can't overstate if for nothing else the Trio + is the best musician friend you can have at your disposal. Especially if your in my situation.

Trio Plus

By Lee from TN

Just received the Trio Plus. Seems well constructed and has been easy to learn after reading the manual. There are some good videos on Youtube that also help. My main advice is to make sure you understand the various procedures for clearing (deleting) songs, parts, loops and overdubs. It's easy to inadvertently delete something. Ask me how I know. For me, using both the amp and mixer outputs gives much better sound than just using the amp output. For now, I'm sending the output to two different amps. I'm in the market for an inexpensive powered monitor for the mixer output; suggestions would be appreciated. Ultimately I want to output directly into my Tascam mixer but I'm not ready for that quite yet.

Great device for creating your own backing tracks and loops!

By Greg from Philly
Music Background: 70 year old retired Jazz guitarist wanna-be

This an amazing pedal. It gives you a complete back-up band to help you practice, make backing tracks and loops, and create many musical ideas. It's loaded with features and has all the right components you need to manipulate your sound. Read the directions and watch all the YouTube videos and you'll see this is a great addition to your pedalboard The only thing it took me a while to figure out was you may have to turn your guitar volume up until the TRIO picks it up, so turn the amp down until you get the balance you need. I love mine!

This pedal does it all. I am a one-man-band and have no reason to invite a bass, rhythm guitar, or drum player to my house anymore. They have all been replaced by this pedal. I highly recommended this to players looking to create new music, jam by yourself, and get rid of your bandmates.

Great tool

By ElVee from Central MA.
Music Background: 50+ Years playing pro/semipro

I've had this for a couple of months now. I really enjoy it and it makes an awesome practice tool. I really like that the looper is smart enough to auto in/out. It's definitely worth the investment.

My only minor nit is that they made the lettering really dark and the font size really small so in a low light environment it's virtually impossible to read the various settings without the use of a flashlight - kind of gray on black. I end up having to pick up the unit and look at it with a flashlight so i can see what I'm actually selecting. It would be really nice if the text was backlit so you could actually read it.

Digitech Trio Plus Looper Pedal

By J K. from Tampa Bay

This is a great little tool for practicing, laying down ideas, and even playing out live - solo. It's very versatile and flexible. You'll want to make sure that you get the FS3X remote footswitch as well. A small learning curve to it, but, well worth it.

The best looper by far and so many great ideas spring from the Band you'll write in every style. Get the 3 pedal add on and play for hours with the usb drive to hold your creations.

Keith es el Numero Uno

By Jim from Catawba Island, OH
Music Background: 40 years playing....

Keith returned my call quickly as I am working through upgrading my live acoustic guitar sound. While looking at effects pedals, he took his time to talk through the ones I thought MIGHT work, and took one home to test it to report back to me on recommending or not. That is not only beyond the call of duty, it is the next best thing to brick and mortar trying it out. Maybe better, 'cause he is probably a better player!!

Awesome pedal

By Gerald

The Trio is a great looper pedal. It's great to be able to have a bass and drums playing along with you. There are many options to enjoy like being able to record a song with up to five parts and being able to keep it on a memory card. Another is being able to slow down or speed up the song after you record a part or getting a lot of different sounds from your loop. I am re ally enjoying it !!!!

An amazing pedal!

By Mac M. from Ofallon, IL
Music Background: Worship band guitar and singer.

I owned a looper for years. Found trying to use it to be frustrating and it ended up sitting on a shelf until i wanted to try again to use it. After seeing a YouTube video on the Trio +, I thought there must be a catch. It looked too easy. But the attraction of it adding a bass and drum track into the looper drew me in to buying it. I use a Line 6 pedalboard and a Taylor T5, and now I can lay in the bass and rhythm for the drums, add a simple rhythm guitar strum, change to another tone, and start layering in fills and lead licks, within 10-15 minutes. I am thoroughly happy with it. I'm still learning what buttons do what function in order to expand how I use it.

As always, Ryan at Sweetwater has been ready to help with any questions I've had. Can't beat the service at Sweetwater!

Disatisfied W.W.R.I.

By Armand J.
Music Background: Musician- Composer- Author

The band Trio isn't what it clamed to be. It doesn't follow along. you have to program it first, any changes have to be programed first. It is also not user friendly, as most Digi Tech products are. You have to keep referring to the manual to figure what button does what & when. I thought The Trio was like The TC Helicon Harmonizer The mike and the guitar are plugged into it and it harmonizes up to 3 vocal harmonies by the tune of your guitar. I need the Trio to play along Bass & drums when I play alone. As for drums I have a Vox Battery amp that I use to play in the park exs. In my Studio I have a Keyboards Both have Drums to play along with if that what your looking for. With the trio with the looper you can record multiple tracts with all they put into it, if you can understand it all with the different flashing lights an all. And the stick (flash drive) Is difficult to remove, it is so small and if you have stubby fingers you can't remove it. I've tried & still can't remove it.

Great, but nn TAP Tempo

By Robert S. from Missoula, MT

Great unit, but it has no TAP tempo that can be accessed by the Cntrl Port. This would allow both setting the tempo with the foot and allow switching a system like the Boss ES-8 set the tempo. I contacted Digitech concerning this and they responded with "good idea, maybe consider enhancement with the next firmware update". That was 2 years ago, so I won't hold my breath. Anyway, tempo can be set by other methods, but they are more clumsy. Overall very please with the product.

My New Favorite Pedal

By William from San Antonio, Texas
Music Background: Old School Rocker from the '80's

I really love this pedal. As a song writing tool, it excels. It is so much fun to use. the designers of this pedal did a great job of keeping it simple to use but still very functional. A very powerful tool for getting ideas down fast using just your guitar. It has made playing fun again instead of being cumbersome.

While the drum sounds may not be the best in the world (I also use EZ Drummer & Addictive drums) they do fit in the mix well. I run my pedal board into the Trio + and my Blues Jr. with a Bigshot ABY box. Guitar out of the Trio + into an Eleven Rack to an FRFR Monitor and my Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro mixer. The Drums & Bass from the Trio + go to the mixer as well. Guitar loops are sampled dry in the Trio + get whatever amp sound that's needed from the Eleven Rack. This is a must have pedal! The drummer is solid and the bass player never shows up wasted. If you're thinking about buying one I highly recommend it! I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I'd give a 5.0 but the software for the computer needs to be more capable so you can get your creations into your DAW without recording them in real time one track at a time.

Special Thanks to Caleb Lowrey at Sweetwater for making me a great deal and always providing great service.

Regards,

William

Love It!

By Tom E. from Oregon.

I bought this to aid in my practices. There are many variation on what it can do and the fact that you can overdub on the looper make this a complete package.Using the looper is really easy. I normally have a horrible time punching in and out at the right times. With this looper, you just tell it you are going to record a loop, wait for the rhythm to repeat and play. When you have reached the end of your recorded rhythm, it automatically ends your recording and begins playback. Very nice.

Tempo changes on your recorded loops stretch properly and everything stays in tune.

About the only feature that is missing is a metronome for recording multipart sections. I would just recommend using the metronome on a tuner if your worried about the timings on multiple tracks.

I am very happy with this purchase.

No musician friends, no problem!

By Daniel from Boise
Music Background: 20 years guitar, piano, bass

I have been playing guitar for 20 years and have been in a few garage bands. I really am in my element creating new licks and riffs, and this pedal is the perfect compliment to my creative flame. It listens and gives you instant backing(granted you have to learn the looper hurdle and how it works, if you understand timing you might get over this hurdle instantly). I have pro tools for when I want to record, this becomes tedious. This pedal is the bridge for good ideas between just noodling and recording to computer software; plus you can sequence your songs for live playing. I"m convinced anyone saying anything negative about this pedal really hasn"t took the time to learn the darn thing. I absolutely love it!!!!

Hardware Limitations

By Sweetwater Customer

The pedal helps retain some skills on your instrument of choice, but from the perspective of control the mix it doesn't quite cut it. The MIXER output is a TS (tip-sleeve), meaning a mono mixdown of the drum and bass tracks. This kills you from being about to route the bass track to a bass cab and the drums to the main PA.
This is failure to launch, when perhaps all they had to do was use a TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) jack for stereo operation and bring out the signals from the DSP to have stereo signals.

This limits the use of the pedal to very casual environments, like a living room. For $... I'd expect something more pro capable.

Digitech Trio plus

By Gary M. from Texas
Music Background: 50 some years 30 some years playing in Church

My second opinion of the Digitech Trio plus. I have had this for a few days, and me and my grandson are having a lot of fun with it. I do have a problem , and this by know means is Sweetwater Musics fault. I don't know if this bothers you are not, but I am tired of buying something then you have to turn around and buy something else to use and get the full function of the pedal. Its about like buying an amp then have to turn around and buy a channel switcher. Back in the old days we got everything we needed for one price,. they didn't make you pay for a channel switcher, you got everything to make that amp work. So now I have to buy a Diditech FS3X pedal... to get the full use out of it. It's just a way for them to get more money out of you. AGAIN THIS IS NOT SWEETWATER MUSICS FAULTH THEY ARE AWESOME PEOPLE. But it just makes this old guy upset, to me it's know different then buying a tube amp, but after you buy it you got to buy the tubes for it.

Music Background: 50 some years 35 maybe Praise and Worship

I bought this to use for practice on guitar and bass, when I practice with bass I turn the bass off on the pedal. My grandson in the few days I have had are having a blast with it. I will use the looper play some chords, then he will play a lead with the machine, and he has a band behind him. I might use it to record with. I was thinking about putting it on my board with my effects, and telling our drummer the next time he was gone, he could be replaced kidding but maybe. it's an awesome pedal and a good practice tool. And again I must say Sweetwater Music is awesome and all the people that work there. Also again I say get yourself one of their cards very low payments and play now not later. They are my go to place when I need something and shipping is fast.

Amazing... love this thing!

By Richie from South Florida

I had wanted this pedal for more than a year, finally took the plunge and so glad I did. It's way better and more fun than I ever thought it would be. I'm fairly new to guitar... and I figured this would be a great way to get some "playing with a band" experience without a band. It's really simple to use... but so full of advanced features if you take the time to look. Every time I think "Wish it did this..." there's a button or combination that does it. Another reviewer mentioned instant record for looping... another option gives you a count-in. There's an alt Time button for half/double time after learning... and pressing it before you teach tells it to interpret your timing as faster or more slowly depending on its color. Each genre contains a number of normal, swing, and 3/4 styles. The guitar fx for boosting the guitar for lead parts gives you different sound options depending on genre. There's a metronome to assist matching the next part to the previous one... and then it will adjust them together afterward as well. I find out new, super thoughtful and useful features each time I use it. But you really can just sit and play, without getting in deep, and the Trio just joins in. It's the most fun I've had with my guitars.

DigiTech Trio Plus Review

By Brian from Lawrence, KS

I love this pedal! I started out with the original Trio and had to upgrade, and I'm not disappointed I did for one second. My favorite feature on this pedal is the added looper section and its ability to manipulate the tempo of the loop track imedeately after putting down the loop - ( there's no need to stop playing and save the loop before manipulating like many looper pedals out there). Also the added Genres like the Latin and Folk are super fun. I could go on forever about this pedal but you should really just go ahead and buy it now because you won't regret it.

Auto Record!!

By Jeff from TX
Music Background: Long time pro now retired

I don't know why they don't advertise this feature, AUTO RECORD ! You don't have to worry about timing your foot press with the start of a loop, it's starts recording when it detects your signal. With other loopers I can't seem to get the timing just right, but with this no problem! I wish it was stereo so I can use my effects but I'll just put something in line with the guitar output to sweeten in up before my rack mixer.

Thinking about a looper pedal or Beat Buddy?

By Road D. from The Blue Marble
Music Background: Gigging Musician

Forget regular looper pedals or Beat Buddy the Trio+ is a game changer.

The price may seem steep compared to other options but it was so worth it and the only buyers remorse I'd have would be buying one of the others mentioned and having a friend show up with the Trio.

There's two small up and running tips.

1. You can run one cable from the Trio to your amp but the drums will pick up the same coloring your guitar signal does (distortion, reverb...etc) so you'll want to run two lines off the Trio. It has separate output jacks to allow one for guitar to your amps regular input jack and another for the drums to your amps MP3 jack or effects loop or something like a monitor/PA/home audio speaker. That way you can keep the drum signal uncolored. The owners manual has a good diagram showing possible connections.

2. You can't just strum away to teach the band. It's looking for "the beat" not the rhythm. You're first few attempts may result in, "Whoa those drums are going way to fast." Blame it on all those fast up and down strokes you've become accustomed to playing alone. You'll learn to simplify things to get the new drummer and bass player that are never late for practice in the groove.

Plenty of Youtube videos are available showing it's functions and capability.

I spent many hours researching looper and drum machine options. Thirty-seven years of guitar playing has brought plenty of gear through the door looking for creative spark that was short lived.
By default just like playing with a real drummer and bass player the Trio+ will make you a better musician and easily justifies the price.

In the first couple days I laid down some tracks to House Of The Rising Sun, Rocking In The Free World, Kryptonite and others that drew a ,"wow that really sounds good" comment from wifey.

Bass player and drummer not interested? No problem. After a few months I'm still discovering what this little gem can do. One thing it did was teach me was that my timing really sucked. It's an infallible metronome along with realistic drum and bass tracks. I do what I want to do and pipe it direct to a Tascam 24SD. Who needs bandmates? ;)

Major amounts of musical fun with the Trio+

By Sweetwater Customer

I love Digitech's Trio+
I have one of the original Trio's and while it is a very fun device Digitech have really hit it out of the park with Trio+.
The addition of the looper, sequencer and 5 parts per song really make this an awesome way to work on my music.
It's great for writing (or in my case making up) songs but it's just as much fun practicing my lead playing.
I have already discovered a whole bunch of new music just from messing with the Trio+ for a couple of weeks.

Digitech have done a great job of providing a high degree of functionality in an intuitive and simple way.
Apart from the fact that you 'teach' the band by playing music (not tapping a touch screen or worse) their little push buttons use of levels of light, color and flashing to communicate in a very effective yet simple way.
The optional foot switch, which I also purchased, is a great addition with modes for live work or recording.

Highly recommend the Trio+ to anyone who wants to be creative with music.

Singer/Songwriter's Dream Come True

By Tom from Tulsa
Music Background: Memphis gigging and recording musician for a decade.

I'm a singer/songwriter who is a capable guitarist/bassist/keys player, but no lead player by any means at any of them. My standard M.O. these days is to bash out a a chord progression for my vocals to follow, then email the outline to a much more talented buddy who fleshes out the song.

This pedal will simply flesh out the song for you. Using this pedal with my acoustic guitar (and even with my bass guitar, oddly enough) I can easily outline an entire song with with bass, drum and guitar before adding my vocals into my DAW.

If you are a songwriter into recording or playing out live, this pedal is truly amazing. It would be worth purchasing at three times the price.

So far So good

By Phil M.
Music Background: guitarist 40+years

I had been pondering grabbing one of these for months...I have the Digitech RP500 that I really enjoy and had the 20 second looper upgrade when it came out....I decided I needed something more. After reading pretty much all the reviews of the majority of loopers out there, I decided on this, especially since it has bass/drums and looping ability. I also picked up the FS3X as well...I am really enjoying it...I have only had it a few days now, but am really getting the feel for it. As one reviewer said, keep the learning chords straight forward and then embellish on the loop and it works great. I read where some were not happy that they could not get a fade or decent ending...I added a volume pedal between the out put and amp and can create a fade out while playing....still experimenting.

Lost confidence

By Larry from New Mexico

Unfortunately, I have to give the DigiTech Trio+ a one star rating. The concept of the Trio+ is great, but in my case, I had to return the item because the product continued to fail. The first Trio I received worked beautifully for about a month then fail, it was returned to Sweetwater and DigiTech replaced the first unit with a refurbished unit, which was ok because the unit looked new. However, the refurbished also failed. After talking to Sweetwater Customer Support they agreed to replace the refurbished unit with an off the shelf new unit. The new unit failed out of the box at the first plug in. I am sure that there are persons out there that have had better luck than I have had with the Trio+, but given that three units failed to perform has forced me to lose confidence with this product and after reading my review, if you decide to buy the Trio+, hopefully will have better luck than I. Finally, I contacted Sweetwater again and without any problems, Sweetwater agreed to accept the unit back and provide me with a full credit for the unit and accessory foot switch. Additionally, I have to include in my review and thank Sweetwater, without problems, stood behind their 2 year Guarantee, as over a year had gone by since I receive the first unit. As always, thank you to Aaron Cieslikowski for expert advice and help.

READ BEFORE YOU SPEND $!!

By Steven L. from Manhattan Beach, CA

I recently purchased the DigiTech Trio. My expectations were high given the many favorable reviews. I will advise in advance that I am a Beat Buddy user and I find the Beat Buddy Beats to be the best for live performance of all of the drum machine/track options. Also, I used, and then stopped using "Band in a Box" Software in consideration of the "cheesy sound".

The Trio is an excellent tool if you want to practice your lead riffs. For this alone the pedal is worth it if you have the spare $ (you need the switch). The pedal is not adequate for live performance. The sounds are:

*Very mechanical sounding and not pleasing, essentially "Casio" sounds
*There are many choices of styles for a track, but none of the drum choices sound good
*None of the drum sounds are pleasing or could be used for live performance
*The bass is inconsistent in how it follows your playing when it learns
*Again the bass quality is pretty low
*The various bass settings don"t help the poor quality of the bass

So buy it if you really need to enhance your lead playing. For this it is excellent and my lead playing has improved even after only a few uses.

If you really need a track to play to for certain songs, you could accomplish most of what this pedal does with your regular looper. Just record your track with your drum pedal and guitar both going into your looper and overdub a base line from your guitar.

Another feature is that the operation of the buttons and controls sometimes do not match what is in the Quick Start Guide. This was very frustrating and I had to accidentally discover how to do certain procedures. DigiTech should take a look at the Guide. I read the entire 80+ page manual and it does not help that much.

Lastly I would note that my rig includes a good mixer, Bose L-1"s and top quality connectors and instruments so things sounded how they sounded.......

i haven't had the pedal too long yet but it seems to do what it is advertised to do . it certainly is a great practice tool as well as a great way to get your creativity going . i'm hoping to make backing tracks i can use for playing songs that have already been written as well as creating with it . i have successfully made one pretty good one so far . i was hoping to be able to record the count in for my tracks but so far haven't found a way to do this however i'm still getting used to it ! over all it's an amazing tool for those of us that don't have very many non-digital musicians to collaborate with
the manual seems to have been pretty well written however i had to learn from various u-tube videos
the importance of learning how to teach the trio what you want it to learn...

Incapable of playing b5 chords

By Sweetwater Customer

Brilliant concept with a huge execution flaw. The pedal does not handle chords with a flat 5th.

If you plan on using it to practice any mi7(b5) from jazz or blues, or any diminished chord in any style, unfortunately it won't do. I bought one, updated the firmware etc., but my suspicion was confirmed by Digitech's customer support.

Wish it worked. Would have been really helpful! Come on guys, fix the design!

Trio+

By Lance D.
Music Background: Non professional play for charities etc

As with any new hitech gear there is a learning curve. Some of my older musician friends would give it an initial trial and say "its too complicated" or comment "i don't go for all that gadgetry" however like a new piece of music you are learning, keep at it and soon you will have it figured out. I personally think this is a great new wave of technology in the stomp box world. I would say to others, "give it a try".

So far, so good.

By Bob B. from NY
Music Background: Ex band. Home player for now.

Just received this pedal, so I've only had a few days to play with it. It seems to learn the chord structure rather well. It may be my learning curve, but there's so many options I'm focusing on obtaining a rhythm section combo that I like for each song I enter. Time will tell, but I confident it will cover what I'm looking for. I'm hoping to be able to record the tracks. I haven't quite figured out the best way to accomplish that. It's more me than the Trio+. Great practice tool. Just noodling around with it is awesome.

almost but not quite

By Shreddy M. from Colorado

Got one of these about 10 days ago and it's pretty cool, except there are two major flaws which limit it to being nothing more than a really fun metronome. First, you have to stop playback to clear a loop, which is a major bummer. You should be able to build a new loop without stopping the band, like all the other good loopers out there. If you mess up the loop, or decide you can do better/different, everything has to come to a halt and start over before you can record a new loop.

Second, you have to let the band play all the way through a progression before you can record a loop. It would be very useful to start recording a loop immediately when the band starts, right? If you are trying to be musical or play for an audience of even one person, you have to let the band play all the way through before you can start looping. If your chord progression is 16 bars, that's a lot of just sitting around.

Another thing is I mostly play Rock and Country, and while there are "rock", "alt rock", "country", and "folk" settings, they mostly suck at just playing a normal beat. I tend to use "R&B", "pop", and "hip-hop" more, they are just more useful. The sounds are functional but they are pretty cheesy, it would be cool if you could upload your own samples and make something more organic. I think this sounds best for somebody who is into synthy pop or 80s sounds.

My final suggestion for DigiTech is that it would be nice to be able to have more inputs and outputs, and be able to assign a loop to the "mixer" output. For instance, build loop with acoustic guitar, send that to the "mixer" along with bass/drums, then have electric guitar to to the amp for overdubs and soloing.

The band is pretty cool, but i might sell this, get the trio band creator, and use it in conjunction with the RC-30, which is just designed more for performance. Hopefully the next model addresses these obvious issues that... should be able to do.

Great but not perfect

By Chris from Cary, NC USA
Music Background: Amateur musician

I've had the Trio+ for about a month now, and I must say, it's musically more intricate than I expected. I expected boring drum and bass lines, with non-distinctive styles, but the Trio+ provides very live-like patterns that are great for solo jamming or with a group that lacks a rhythm section. I'm able to compose rhythm tracks that my trio can use for live gigs that forces us to respect the song's tempo and song structure. I'm also able to create tracks for song ideas that I can easily present to my band members that have the "feel" of the song.

However there are two features that I don't like about it.

First, the knobs are TOO easy to turn and so it's very difficult to judge how much to turn them to get to a certain location. Having knobs with more a "drag" to them would be better. It's like having the early power-steering mechanism on cars that made it easy to turn but lost the feel of the road. I asked Digitech to consider changing the knobs on my unit.

Second, you can only store 12 songs on an SD card, regardless of SD card size, since the song number is designated by the Style knob, and there are only 12 styles. I asked Digitech to consider implementing a "Bank" feature while in Song mode, chosen by the Genre knob. Hence users can then have 4 banks of 12 songs each on a single 32GB card. This will make the unit more user-friendly for live gig situations so users do not have to pop SD cards in/out of the unit to change sets for example

Digitech Trio+

By BlackFeather from The AuDioAsYLuM

I have wanted one of these since I first saw it demo'd. I finally broke down & got one as an early xmas present. Was helped thru the Sweetwater card application fairly smoothly & had one @ My door less than 5 days later. Aaron Chandler was pretty kool about helping me thru it all. Ive been a drummer all My life & due to an injury have decided to take up the guitar finally & this pedal is the best hing ever to practice the basics with. Was fairly easy to figure out even to a layman like Myself. Hardest part for me @ least was figuring out how to connect it to My Digitech RP500 but after that it was ON!! Had it a couple days & already My fingers are SORE AS F***! lol. A solid purchase & a great pedal. Thanks Sweetwater!

Practice, practice, practice!

By nate from Redwood City, CA
Music Background: FunkJazz&Metal

Well this pedal alone won't get you to Carnegie Hall, but all the extra practice hours you're likely to get by owning one just might. The trio is the best thing that has come along for serious guitar practice since Jamey Aebersold play along records! Simply play some chord changes and the Trio creates the backing track to loop and improvise over for hours and hours. Even works with really weird changes! My only gripe is that it doesn't catch the guitar performance the first time through. You always have to make one pass to "train the Trio" and a second pass to record the guitar part. Perhaps there is a good reason for this? In any case, that's just all the more practice you get right?! Anyway, I love this little box. I use it every single day. It is a fundamental part of my practice rig.

Band In A Box for Dummies

By John W. from Ludington, MI
Music Background: Lifelong amateur, Jeff Beck worshiper

I haven't had my unit long enough to have figured it all out, let alone master it. But, as a certified techno-dummy, I've been unable to pull myself away from the thing.

All I've done so far is plug in a couple of I, IV, V progressions. The bass lines are fairly clunky, there are few passing tones, and, in one attempt, I'm not sure if I programmed "The Thrill Is Gone" or the guitar solo chords from Pink Floyd's "Money." No matter. I've wanted to practice my lead playing with a music track for years, and, for that, the Trio Plus is fantastic.

The bass sound is amazing. It's as if a real bass player is in the room, except that the playing doesn't amp up along with my solo parts. The drums sound fairly "synthy," but I've heard worse. Playing along with this device enables me to really work on my clunky turn-arounds, tempo, phrasing and contextual tone. And when I'm hot, I'm my own guitar god in the spare bedroom.

I'll take time - I am a dummy, after all - to get comfortable with the various combinations of rhythms, styles and tempos, as well as the addition of dubs.

Like many reviewers, I recommend the foot switch, which enables me to put the Trio on a table and read the dials up close.

Bottom line: I love this thing. Buy it.

More fun than a metronome

By Thomas W. from Hayward, CA

An excellent practice tool that inspires creativity. Great for warming up and much more. Would have been 5 stars but DigiTech doesn't include the full manual. I read technical documents as part of my real job and find it is a lot easier to have the manuals in front of me instead of having to look for information on a PDF, especially at 60+ pages.

great tool

By Gator M. from Texas
Music Background: 40 years playing rock and blues--US and Europe

This is a great little box. It takes some time to get yourself trained, but once you understand how to use it, the creativity juices start to flow. First, make sure you get the foot control pedal.I recommend you plug the out for the bass and drums to a PA mixer or some full-sound type of amplifier. Plug the out from the looper into your guitar amp.

Start with some song that is easy and you know well. Play the chords cleanly at the speed of the song that you want. Try to deaden the strings between chords. Remember--this is just to teach it your chord progression--go ahead and use minors, majors, 7ths. Play the song to the ending part of the verse or chorus or bridge and hit stop. now hit play and you will hear the bass and drums---now, experiment with the more than 144 optional settings. When you find the one you want, then play it back while recording your guitar parts on the looper. You will be amazed at the degree of authenticity. It does not sound like a drum machine. You will hear cymbal and hi-hat touches and change-ups. you will hear drum rolls between verses, etc.Same with the bass. It's great for songwriting.

Example--play Ain't No Sunshine, once the bass and drums are correct (and before you add the guitar on the looper), let the song play while you twist the two knobs for Genre and Style. For instance, go to the Latin beats and see how Santana might have played the song. Sometimes the changes and effects of different styles will help you with the song you've written. No longer will you teach your band your new original and then, 4 weeks later, tell them you want to change it. And since you can record the verse, choruses and bridges on different tracks within the song, you can mix and match the order as you actually listen to how it will sound instead of just hearing it in your mind.

For you one-man bands out there--this can really be great for you too---just be careful and make sure that the tracks you record are for backing--you'll need to put your live guitar and vocals at the front of the mix to make it sound right.

Get one.

By Tdogg from Detroit
Music Background: beginner, w/ 45 years experience

My birthday present to me & Straty - a most patient and forgiving rhythm section, that sounds really good. After a month, I am still studying the manual, and learning about the various backups available - still working my way through blues, R&B and country. I showed it to an accomplished family of guitarists, who contrasted it with their BeatBuddy, "why didn't we buy this instead? - couldn't get over the drum fills (Nashville cats, apparently). A very solid piece of equipment that is a lot of fun. I bought the footswitch after - works very well, and makes this a nice tabletop unit. If nothing else, it is the fanciest metronome you will ever use, and it has really sharpened up my timing and increased my pace. One feature is the various effects you can turn for rhythm or lead in the different styles - twang for country, grind for metal - pretty cool if you lack pedals. Nate was always willing to help, but Sweetwater did such a good job - we'll chat next purchase (RP 100?)! Let me say this - if I broke it, I'd buy another one.

Digitech Trio+ Band Creator and Looper Pedal

By Dean K. from Columbus, Ohio

I am a guitar player of over 50 years and have taught guitar and bluegrass banjo along the way. I have practiced using metronomes, click tracks and even drum tracks over the years, but have rarely played in groups live, or practiced live.
The Trio+ has made it possible for this old "living room" musician to practice tunes with a drummer and bass player that never tire or drop the beat!
I found that I could quickly play a part and loop it, then overdub more parts, leads and solos in no time.
I was playing a tune with several parts in less than an hour after receiving the Trio and setting it up.
I then found that I can record the drum and bass part of my choosing into Pro Tools on separate tracks as well as the practiced guitar loops I had created!
I consider this the best practice and learning tool since the 70's when I learned tab and taught students by recording the lessons on cassette tapes, and giving them the tape and tabs for practicing.
Once again, I say to all the youngsters learning guitar (or other instruments), "If I had learning tools like Trio and Youtube lessons, I could have been...???" Well, maybe?
Thanks to Digitech for reigniting my passion!

still discovering the intricacies of this box. fave settings so far are country and jazz. i'll admit i had a tad bit of skepticism despite all the great reviews. but as i told a friend...worth every cent. wrote a new tune and played for 3 1/2 hours straight this past saturday after i set it up.

with my maiden voyage utilizing tube driver/ego compresser/cathedral reverb & evidence guitar cable pumped thru the effx loop....the results were ethereal in tone--the Trio+ creating impressive bass & drums writing. in short, this ain't our 1980s drum machine. have no trouble saying one of the most innovative tools for guitar i've acquired thru Sweetwater--& their trademark warp 9 shipping.

would have scored a perfect 5 except....you HAVE to download "complete" manual. hey...if Roland can do their massive manual for their guitar synth--digitech can, too. AND...a footswitch is integral. so why make clients buy it separately? [which i did]. suggestion....digitech--at least offer discount if you buy together. marketing should be on same page as design--which has invented an all time classic practice and demo machine.

Great premise but....meh...

By Drew S. from New Franklin, Ohio
Music Background: semi-amature hobbyist

I was very excited to try this out but after the first few minutes I already made up my mind to send it back...It is not that it is a bad pedal....just a little too 'busy" for what I needed. I also don't like things making decisions for me and this pedal does just that....it took me a while just to get a normal straight forward drum beat. If it was a lot less expensive I would keep just to mess around with, but the price tag was just to high to have a novelty item... I will say is very well built and I think this style pedal will be well fined tuned in the future...

DigiTech Trio +

By Edward S.
Music Background: long

First of all, Sweetwater was spot on. The order arrived well packed and on schedule. The Trio+ is taking me a while to figure out. I've watched the tutorials on You Tube and read the literature that came with the pedal but I'm finding that arming the bass and drums can be challenging. I can see that this is going to be a great tool for practicing when I finally get it under control. So far I have had to make do with what it gives me. I think that initial simplicity is the key. It is a well made pedal and I have faith that it will live up to its promises. I'm living in Central America these days and it is my hope that this box will become my band so that I can avoid musical withdrawal. Keep the beat.

Changed my (guitar) life

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: 25 years of playing

As someone who plays alone in the guest bedroom, I've always missed jamming with a bass player, or drummer, or anyone for that matter. For years I've gotten by with a looper. When the Ditto+ came out, I was skeptical about its functionality and its sound -- namely, whether it would sound good through my DRRI. I finally pulled the trigger after mulling it over for a year, during which time I also bought a reverb pedal.

Well, the Ditto+ has blown me away. My huge Boomerang looper is off the board. The Ditto sounds incredible through my Deluxe Reverb (with the amp reverb off), and the pedal does far more than I expected. If you are considering getting one, go for it. You will love it. My only criticism is that it does not sound nearly as good running directly into headphones. But that's not why I bought it.

By Mark from Kansas Citry
Music Background: Pro

I've been working with this pedal for a short time, and it pretty much does what I expected it to do.

What I didn't expect is the proprietary 9v power supply. There was absolutely no need at all to deviate from the standard. Now I have to find ANOTHER power supply on my board.

For shame, Digitech. That's pretty short sited.

Buen trabajo

By Juan C. from San José, California.

Finally!

By surf from San Diego

You know what it's like to be in a band where EVERYONE gets along? Of course not! Nobody does. LOL
This is as close as it gets. AND it makes those countless hours of practice worthwhile, and dare I say...fun. Finally.

It inspires one to practice...and to even try new things: change up the tempo, change the genre, smack the bass player upside the head and have him simply play and not try to show off... LOL

I don't know that I would use it live...but then that's not my thing. Though I CAN see quite a number of people using I that way. But...for practice, composing, and sharing your ideas...I think this one is hard to beat.

Tempo button frustrations, feature request

By Tim E. from Alabama
Music Background: Wannabe Open-Mic Hero

I love this pedal, it opened up alot of new possibilities for me. I would recommend to a friend and will be keeping mine for a while ...But,...:
The one thing i will complain about is the 'Tempo' option - if it gets activated, even just slightly (and it is a very sensitive knob) it will disable any looping functionality. I had to use a hot-glue-gun to glue the knob to high-noon (off). It was too easy to bump the knob when programming sequences or changing the Genre or loop-level knob.
It'd also be nice if a Sequence could be copy/pasted to another Sequence position to include the drum/bass parts and any pre-recorded loop part.

The trio + is a great pedal that will provide hours of needed solo practice.

You will need to get familiar as to to how it responds to the entry's, sometimes it may not be what you wanted but, with tweaking one will always find something to play along with.

There are many videos on YouTube showing what this pedal is capable of, watch them, get what you can from them and enjoy.

This pedal will make you a better guitar player.

Fantastic looper

By Jon from San Jose, CA

Just got the Trio Plus and I have to say this is one of the best practice tools I've ever seen. I've only had it a short time and already I can tell that my lead playing has benefited from having a band to synchronize with. The Trio Plus is very intuitive to use (I had a whole song going in about 5 minutes - use YouTube to get some ideas for how to use the pedal) and it sounds great. The drum and bass parts aren't studio-quality, but they are more than adequate for how I will use the pedal. Some of the generated backing tracks have a surprising amount of nuance and subtlety; I taught the band a fairly complex jazz rhythm and was pleasantly surprised at how the bass track followed the guitar rhythm in a natural-sounding way.

A few points to note:

- If you're playing back through a guitar amp, use the effects loop in the Trio Plus for your effects. I actually run the amp effects loop as part of the Trio effects loop (ie. from Trio effects send to dirt pedals, then into volume pedal, then into amp main input, amp effects send to mod/delay/reverb pedals, mod/delay/reverb pedals to Trio effects return, then Trio out to amp effects return. That way the Trio Plus isn't getting in the way of dirt pedals pushing the pre-amp section of the amp, and the drum and bass output isn't getting distorted by the pre-amp. It works without the amp effects loop but if you push the volume the whole loop starts breaking up rather than just the guitar parts that you want.

- This thing is a major power hog; not surprising given how much compute power is stuffed in there. If you have ambitions of putting it on your pedal board and connecting to a central isolated power supply it will not work; the Trio Plus pulls too much current for even strong power supplies like my Voodoo Labs 4x4 to be able to power it. Not a problem for me since it's a home practice tool, but be aware that you'll need to carry the (very nice) included power supply along if you plan to gig with this.

- I bought the FS3X footswitch to use with this pedal; I recommend it as have others reviewing here.

As always, Sweetwater service was top-notch, even though I didn't need anything this time Ken Davis always follows up to make sure everything is OK.

Great pedal but not perfect ,,it would have been nice to be able to move parts and tracks around where ever you wanted to put them or copying a track so i don,t have to record the same thing again,,yes you can move the style around but not the genre,,maybe I want to start a song in blues and then have it go into rock,,etc,,intro and outro drum parts would be cool also,,,the looper gets a little overdriven or distorted if you turn it up too loud ,,another frustrating thing about the pedal is the elastic audio,,yes you can slow down or speed up the tempo but you can,t save the setting on to the track so what,s the point,,I,m looking at it as a live performing pedal ,,,all in all it,s an awesome pedal but it could be better and they probably will make it better ,,at a price ,,maybe add some strings ,piano parts ,,I just hope they keep it as simple as this one is to use ,,, great pedal !

Trio Plus makes practicing fun

By dave p. from San Diego, CA

I am an intermediate guitar player who is just getting into performing. I have tried to supplement my playing by using different means to create a back-up band. I tried Band in a Box. It was interesting but seemed too complex to get songs to sound right. I used karaoke-version for some songs but it is limited to popular songs and single arrangement. I turned to this expecting it to be pretty limited and/difficult. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to arrange my first song (Sympathy for the Devil) with 15 minutes of opening the box. It has made practicing so much fun. Sometimes I will just endlessly practice playing rhythm guitar and singing with Trio performing the Bass/Drums and other times I use the loop to play my rhythm part while I practice soloing. My guitar playing and overall performance is jumping quickly by practicing with Trio+. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a band with which to practice. I haven't used it in a performance situation but it sounds better than many of the rhythm machines that I have seen used by musicians who busker in the park.

Trio Plus

Music Background: 40 years

This is a great little box.Very good for one-man band or for creative songwriting. Takes a few hours to "get it." but then it works fine. Just keep the rhythm guitar simple when you teach it a song and it will pick up what you're doing. After you input the chords, try variations on the settings til you hear what sounds right. Once you your basic track set up, the additional sections or tracks are much easier---just make sure that you match the settings on addition tracks to the first track before recording the additions.
Adding your "live" guitar with the looper is very easy. Read about the count-in feature which really helps in recording and performing. Only negative is the mini disks which will only hold 12 songs. The manual says that you can use mini discs from 8 to 32 mgs, but save your money and only buy the 8mg discs.Even with larger storage, the machine will only let you record 12 songs. Be careful to set your volume inputs on the looper so they are consistent from song to song if you want to use it live.

A save feature would have been great, but it saves whatever you did last whether you want it or not, so if you make changes and don't like them, delete immediately or you will lose the previous recordings.

Overall, this is very impressive and well thought-out. It's a huge asset to song-writing. Let the creative juices flow and you won't be slowed down by the rigors and time consumed by adding your own bass and rhythm tracks while trying out your ideas. You can always perfect those later in a traditional recording situation.

Useful tool

By Rod from Marion, IN.
Music Background: Gigging Musician

I bought this to help with song writing. Easy to use, lots of options in music genres and styles. It does not have 3/4 timing mode. I don't think I'd try use this in live performance situations, as it is not a hands free operation. If your eyesight is not perfect, the labels can be difficult to read. The writing is a gray on black surface and most of the lettering is very small, especially the connection labels. I have to pick it up to read them. The optional foot controller pedal is highly recommended. Overall, it does what I needed and I enjoy playing along with it.

Incredible....the real benefit of this, is having so many styles for your song to be played in, that it gives plenty of ideas that you hadn't thought of before using it.....a big plus is having an outfit like Sweetwater behind you with your purchase......my sales rep actually called me with as a follow up to my purchase to inquire about my feelings with the device and made sure I was happy with it - and to let me know to call if I had any problems or if I was unhappy with it, to just give a call.......I mean, what other store does that?

Addictive...

By Kelly C. from Monroe , NC

This thing is so cool, great tool for songwriting and practicing in general. Packed with features, and built solid, just really finding tons of uses for this little pedal. The bass and drum tracks actually sound good, and there are lots of variations and options. It's rare that I am impressed by a pedal at this point, but I must say this is one of those rare times that a piece of gear honestly surprised me, and exceeded my expectations. This pedal is worth the money for the "fun" factor alone, just strum a simply progression and check out all the interesting variations the Trio Plus comes up with, then practice your scales, or noodling in general.
Also--the backing tracks are tight, Digitech took the time to use serious musicians, unlike some other pedals out there claiming to do similar things. Very clever pedal, already planning on ordering the additional foot pedal. Very impressive.

Trio+

By jonathan t. from Wilmington, NC
Music Background: Been playing for 40 years

I like this pedal for the most part. One thing that I don't like is the inability to use the rhythms without first 'Teaching' your song to unit with NO BEAT! I would like to be able to start rhythm (even without bass) to a) listen to the different drum patterns and sounds (PRE-teaching) and b) have a beat to play to WHILE teaching unit. Also, there is no 'end' function so when you stop playback, it just stops wherever it was. The only way that I can tell to have a normal sounding ending, is to use the sequence buttons and tell unit how many times to play loop/song. You can't do that on the fly, so as a live looper it's appeal is only fair. Feels very solid and well built. I will be buying the footswitch for easier operation.

Make sure you get the FS3X footswitch to go with this. Setting it to the second position when first using the TRIO+ makes life so much easier. Put the TRIO+ up on a desk so you can adjust Genre and Style and not be bending over after every song to adjust what needs adjusting ! The TRIO+ is so amazing. It's like having bass and drum without the drama. You teach the TRIO+ your riff then dial in the way you want it to sound, and the possibilities are endless. Whether just starting or more advanced, I highly recommend. It comes with an 8GB memory card so you can dub and over dub as needed.

Spectacular

By Eric W. from Manson, WA

I love this thing!! I am a novice guitar player that practices alone with a metronome - not any more! This thing helps me develop my rhythm, playing with a bass line involved and drums, and allows me to start working on soloing over the chords to challenge myself without embarrassing myself in front of other more seasoned musicians.
I recommend this to any closet guitar player who wants to make practice more fun, as well as more productive. You can rock at your own pace with the Trio Plus, and sound better every time.
Nick and the people at Sweetwater, you are terrific! I used to order from another company, but no more.

Erratic

By Luke from Sanborn, NY

Cannot depend on the tempo being the one just played into it. Very erratic. Not dependable enough for live performance, It doesn't work for me.

trio plus

By chuck m. from nebraska

I could not give it a 5 but a 4, ive worked with this thing constant since ive had it.
I play both bass&guitar since im a bass player the bass in box is not for me so i looped my own
bass line in then its more realistic to me and works into my songs looper is great i would
hope in the future that they could do some firware upgrades to improve this box even better.
with the large storage on the sd card i would think 2 or 3 song banks could be added to use
less cards other than that its great wish i had something like this 20 yrs ago.
sweetwater great service

TRIO+

It's great & works as described. They're right, it won't steal you beer at a rehearsal (& I've had that happen!).

Very Cool

By Bill H. from Green Bay, Wi.

I recently exited a 59-year career and needed something to help me keep my chops up and help me not miss performing. This thing is cooler than sliced bread! I'm still in the learning curve stage, but I've come to realize that the optional footswitch (FS3X) will be very helpful. With it, I can put the Trio+ on the desk and not have to bend over whenever I would want to make adjustments. Thank you, DigiTech for a great pedal, and thank you Sweetwater and Ryan Holquist for your excellent service and support.

100% happy 60% of the time

By Eric B. from Bloomington, IL
Music Background: singer songwriter...solo performer

Sounds great but I have some issues with trying to use it for live performance. Not really hands free operation, even with the optional foot switch which I have. Would be much better if the SD card was larger and if there was a display screen for loading and selecting pre recorded songs on the fly as needed. Not at all unhappy that I bought it......just think future models should be more user friendly. Price was reasonable but I would be willing to pay more $$$ if it was easier to use on stage.

Outstanding

By RJ from Oregon
Music Background: Praise Band

Not only is the pedal and outstanding tool for practicing, but the service tha Sweetwater provides is exceptional. AJ made sure I received the product as soon as it arrived. Thank's AJ.
The pedal is fairly easy to get started with the quick instruction guide.
It's easy to store songs, which makes it easy to come back to the songs you played.
Speaking of come back, a week or so after I purchased it AJ came back with a nice follow up to ensure I was happy with the product. Sweetwater has class.
I'm very happy with the pedal and I haven't even started sequencing the parts yet.
"Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth!"

Incredimazing!

By Dave Q. from Battle Ground, WA

This thing is a hoot! So easy to use right out of the box! Guitar Nerds will really dig this pedal! Very intuitive with no noticeable latency. Decent quick start guide but you will need to practice using it just like your instrument to get the full benefits and there are a bunch! Mahalos nui loa Sweetwater and my sales representative Skylar Willis for the great customer service as always!

Fantastic backup

By Aaron
Music Background: Serious hobbyist

From the somewhat mixed reviews of the original Trio, I was wary of trying the Trio Plus. I don't know if the Trio Plus's algorithms have been significantly improved relative to the Trio or if the Trio just works for some and not for others, but I cannot imagine a better tool for practicing in a band-like environment, minus the other people and their issues.

Based on reviews, I first tried inputting a basic rhythm (on beat only, etc.). The results were ok. Then I decided to go for it. 12-bar blues, shuffle. Bam: perfect accompaniment: a shuffle feel, a great groove on the bass, etc. Next, 12-bar blues, a nice little single note rhythm with swung eighths and triplets. Result: perfect accompaniment again, with the bass line obviously taken from my rhythm. Straight 5-6-7-6; again, perfect, with a bass line following the 5-6-7-6. Throw on some jazzy chords. Once again: perfect --- I felt like all I needed was some good wine and a cigarette smoke-infusion. I'm an engineer by day with some experience in DSP, and I am totally blown away by what the Trio team has accomplished with this pedal.

The integrated looper is a huge upgrade over the original Trio. I played without my rhythm guitar accompaniment for a short while and realized that my rhythm contribution is indeed an important part of the overall sound. Perhaps the original Trio suffered for creating a trio rather than quartet sound. Then again, when my wife joins on keys, I don't see needing the rhythm guitar.

Caveats: I'm not a sound snob --- I spend my time learning and playing rather than chasing tone. And I've played extensively with a looper, so perhaps my input to the Trio is sufficiently "regular" to make training easy.

Added a lot of nice features

By Sweetwater Customer from Ohio
Music Background: Semi Pro

Really like what the pedal does. Able to save loops ect. Only reason for the 3.5 rating is
the snare drum sound is just ok. Was hoping they would have upgraded snare sample.
Other than that would have been a 5
