The sound I have been looking for

By Sweetwater Customer from California
Music Background: semi-professional

Bought this pedal on the recommendation of a mentor and man does it deliver. I am a strat man and have always had a struggle getting a that thick lead sound. This delivers in spades. Plays well in front of my Fender Tonemaster Pro through a powered speaker as well as my tube amps and a Quilter 8" micro pro. Thanks Connor for the great customer service!

remarkable tones

By Tom J.

A overdrive pedal with remarkable Rich harmonic tones! Very capable and performs well as a clean boost. Control knobs are very responsive, sensitive to your touch for shaping your sound. One of my favorite petals on my board and never coming off!! Thanks to my sales engineer James ridings for taking the time to understand what looking for!! The dude overdrive pedal is one of my favorite effect pedals!!

The Dude is staying on my board.

By Dave B. from Masontown, WV

Searched for a while for an OD that hits the spot. I run it through my Princeton reverb. All I can say is "wow". Gives me sizzle when I need it and sings in a smooth, sweet voice like no other. This is a very nice pedal!

Amazing

By Jeff from NW Indiana
Music Background: Noodler for 30+ years

I've been playing for well over 30 years and I've owned a lot of pedals. I have yet to hear a pedal that compares to the Dude. It is in a league of its own. Highly versatile. I can't find a setting I do not like. I am somewhat bias though, I also own the Archer and El Hombre. I play through tube amps and solid state amps. I really believe these guys (J Rockett Audio) make the absolute BEST drive pedals available today, hands down!

"I got tone! I got tone!"

By Eric A.
Music Background: Ol' fut, gigging guitarist!

Wow! This surprised me! I thought it would only be an overdrive pedal. It does that including high gain! The treble and bass are very responsive so I can dial in my tone easily. Since the high gain is awesome, I use another pedal for overdrive.

Absolutely Love It!

By J.B. from Carmel, IN

I've had it for about a year now and I just find it incredibly hard to take off my pedalboard. It's just a fun, well tuned pedal. Try it. You won't be sorry!

over-compressed

By Sweetwater Customer from Grand Junction, CO
Music Background: 40 years on stage

You can feel the heavy compression breathing. It's so compressed that it does limit your dynamic expression. It almost has a limiting quality to the feel. Also, due to the compression, fast articulated note runs are not as clear as I like them. Lastly, this is the 3rd knob design put on these pedals, and they still didn't get it right. These new white knobs cannot be turned without the pointers hitting the other pointers. In other words, you get to adjust 2 knobs even when you're only wanting to adjust one.

Finally found a pedal that sounds like an amp!

By Edward from Long Beach, CA

After years of searching, I finally found a pedal that I can run through a clean amp, and the pedal sounds like a driven amp. I had given up on using single chanel amps. I could never get the EJ clean and the use a pedal for drive. It was frustrating. I always had to use a two Chanel amp. But recently, I decided to give The Dude a chance. I bought it, and ran it through my clean Fender amp. Wow! I'm so glad I did. It sounds amazing. I also bought the .45 for crunch rhythm. I use The Dude for lead tones. These pedals are amazing by themselves, but I do like stacking them with the Boss DS1. Anyway, I don't usually do reviews, but I thought I should for this pedal. Check it out!

I love The Dude!

By Peter P. from Aptos, CA

I know that sound is a personal thing. I am still trying to find that perfect tone and I think that the Dude has taken my journey the closer to that place. My amp is a USA made Peavey Delta Blues 115. I have both single coil and humbucker guitars. The Dude makes them both sound better, especially the Strat (Clapton Artist Series with stock noiseless pickups). Since I bought The Dude it has become my go to axe. Instead of just a crunchy overdrive (I like that most times) I have a tone that is warm, embracing, responsive to pick pressure and crisp on demand, that makes me not want to put down my guitar. I am still exploring but so far I can't say enough good things about this pedal.

Maybe it fell off the truck ...

By jeb p. from Arlington, VA

Maybe I just got a bad one.  My drummer and I both have Tim overdrives and while they should be identical they sound slightly different.  There is (I hear) variation in the manufacture of the components that get used and two "identical" pedals can, in fact, sound different.
When I get a new pedal I first play it by itself with all knobs set straight in the middle, i.e., at 12 o'clock.  When I did this with the Dude IT WAS INCREDIBLY LOUD. I had to roll the Level (volume) back to about 8:30 to match; and 9 would be too loud.  This was a bad first impression.
Many overdrives have a mid-range hump but this pedal had the steepest, narrowest upside down U I have ever played.  The Treble and Deep controls had minimal effect.
Playing at home, with a lot of work I did find a sound I enjoyed, with good creamy breakup.  But when I played live that sound got swallowed up (and getting louder was not the answer).  I wasn't really able to get much variation in tone.
Frustrated, I sat down and lined up all the ODs I could get my hands on and played through them: Fulltone OCD, Tim, Rat, Nobles ODR-1 -- all good pedals-- and this Dude.  Every single one sounded distinctly better and far more versatile (I have a Tim and a Rat on my board now).
I dunno, "Dumble in a box"? What does that even mean, since every Dumble (in theory) is unique?
Anyway, 2 stars for me, but YMMV.

Good OD pedal

By Kim from Tennessee

Unique sounding OD. Gives VOX-like sounds. Stacks well with TubeScreamer type pedals. Nice size pedal - in between full size and mini. Sturdy enclosure with access screws on sides instead of pedal bottom. Do not like labeling font. It is hard to read. Do not know if it achieves Dumble tones as I have no experience with this type amp, but this pedal is different from all my other ODs.

The Dude vs Dumble Amp

By Jim M. from Indiana
Music Background: Old pro guitarist. I've played all over the world and now I'm having a ball playing a couple dates a month with guys I enjoy being with! Life is Good!!

I bought this pedal because I love the sound of a Tumble but don't have the money or desire to own one much less carry one around. While it's not an amp, it does provide that Tumble sound if you are willing to experiment with it. I gig a couple times a month now and I use a Quilter Aviator Cub amp or a Quilter Superblock UK with a Mesa Boogie closed back cab. I get some very realistic Dumble sounds with the pedal using either rig. There are other pedals out there that can do the same thing and some may have a few more features but this is very simple and does not take up too much room on the pedal board.

It's the Dude, man!

By Aaron from Spokane, WA

There's a million overdrive pedals out there, but hear you me - this is absolutely one of the very best dirt boxes in production today. The sustain is unreal, the EQ knobs will take you anywhere you want to go sonically, and it just roars through my Friedman Runt 20. I only need a Timmy (lighter gain) and the Dude (heavier stuff/leads) and I've got it covered. Ok and a fuzz pedal too, but that's it, I swear!

Very impressed

By Paul J. from Acworth, GA
Music Background: 30 yrs semi-pro

I was hoping to hate it bc I bought it after a few too many but....it's a keeper. Sounds amazing and very volume responsive. Also the closest I've gotten to the Eric Johnson sound without even trying so color me impressed. I have the Lenny pedal as well which also delivers as advertised. Now I'm curious about the Jeff Beck archer....

You dig it the most!

By Mike from Las Vegas, baby!
Music Background: Pro- semi-retired

James, my sale engineer at Sweetwater, worked with me on this purchase, and I must say, I am not disappointed. This pedal does everything it claims, and more. I've ran it thru several amps (Mesa, Fender, and Polytone) all with the same results. That creamy, overdriven sound that you dream about. Highly recommend, and recommned James for all you equipment needs!

Cheaper than an $80,000 amp

By Shoemaker
Music Background: Mostly a producer

I suspect there's a clean channel that gets mixed in with a slightly compressed fuzzy channel. Result is a fairly sophisticated useful tone for jazz fusion and the blues. It probably does not djent, lol.

This is one KILLER overdrive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Greg R. from Michigan

I have never played a Dumble and don't know if this even gets in the ballpark. You know what? Don't care one bit. This pedal is the best sounding, best feeling od I've ever played. If you're looking for a trashy, garage rock pedal look elsewhere as this baby is so creamy smooth yet somehow retains fantastic articulation that it's unbelievable! Currently, I'm running this in front of my HX Stomp XL direct to FOH at church and the first time I heard a playback on YouTube I couldn't believe it. Even single notes played high on the fretboard are milkshake thick but never dull. And unless you have the ratio cranked it cleans up really well. I will NEVER be without this pedal again!

Super pedal

By tdc from Burlington, vt

I'm a relative newcomer to the world of overdrive pedals, but I had a pretty clear sense of what I wanted to hear. This was the 4th pedal I bought in the search. It took me about four minutes to determine that that The Dude is pretty much exactly what I wanted--something that could get me close to the Dumble tones on Robben Ford's _Talk to Your Daughter_. In short, I'm delighted with this thing. I'm primarily playing a PRS Hollowbody into a Fender Deluxe Reverb.

The Dude is outstanding!

By Dang! from NJ
Music Background: pro

The Dude is the single best od/dist pedal I've EVER owned (and, I've owned boatloads!). Sweet or Tangy, Subtle or Saturated it is simply the best sounding. From just a touch of hair to full-on Santana sustain it's all here.

Sweetwater has great service and selection. I buy from SweetWater whenever possible.

Too humble to own a Dumble?

By Steve D.
Music Background: Former gigging guitarist.

Well, here's the next best thing. This pedal is a little box of magic. I can't get a bad sound out of it. I typically use a low amount of gain, but cranking the gain on this thing sounds so good, I may be rockin' out more often! Sounds killer with my EJ Strat and my AVRI '52 Tele. I'm only using this for playing at home so I can't comment on how this would perform in a live situation, but I would think it would be stellar. If you like Robben Ford or Larry Carlton, this is the pedal for you - but you can totally rock out with it, too. The Dude abides! A big thank you to Mason Moss for the great customer service, as always. Sweetwater is the best.

The Dude boost overdrive Pedal

By Charlie M. from Gulfport, Mississippi
Music Background: Fifty plus years of Blues, Rock , Country- Rockabilly

If Your going to buy an overdrive pedal that actually exceeds expectations, this is one well worth having. There isn't much that this little jewel can't do! It works exceptionally well with every guitar and amp that I own, single coils and humbuckers alike. Fender, Marshall, Seymour Duncan Convertible, etc, the Dude loves them all, and it is so dialable that You can get just about anything that You need tone wise and all thins in between! A keeper for sure!! Well worth the price of admission, and of course, Jared Kalish at Sweetwater always gives Five Star service whenever I have ANY questions about any product that I'm considering to purchase. Sweetwater always delivers the goods!! Also, JRAD really builds top notch pedals, I'm now a fan for life!!

Pricey, But

By Sonny6string
Music Background: life long guitarist, past simi-pro, worshipper of the Almighty

Ok so I chocked it down and paid the high price of admission, I didn't need another pedal (our did I:)... it fills a space in my tonal pallet that was missing. Currently on my board I have the Archer (silver), which is a great pedal, I even like it better than my Klon KTM... a KoT, another great pedal... and a Clay Jones OD, for drive pedals, a E~H Green Russian Big Muff (not a big fan of fuzz) and a Dannenburg SuperRanger for the sweet sauce (Dallas RM clone). Even still, something was missing and The Dude was the missing link, it gives a deep smooth type of clipping with a little touch of fuzz around the edge, it's has a low noise floor, cleans up nicely with the volume control, it stacks well with ours drive pedals and pumps my DSL40CR, and EVH iii, OD channels into meltdown mode, sweet screaming sustain breaking up into great overtones, of course your amp plays a part in that too. So yeah it's a keeper, although the price of admission is steep... if your willing to suck it up then pull the trigger, took me a couple of years, but I'm glad I did.

Better than the others.

By Coolbreeze from Dallas, TX
Music Background: Blues based music of all genres.

As far as amp in the box pedals go this ones a keeper. I already own and love my Andy Timmons @+ that delivers the best pedal Marshall tones I've personally experienced and I would say that this is its Dumble equivalent. I also thought it stacked real well too, Dude into the @+. The blend feature really gives a lot of control over how much distortion I want and the treble and deep controls gives me all need to dial in what I'm wanting.

One of those I gotta give props to.

By Jeff from Kalamazoo, MI
Music Background: Weekender and tinkerer

For context: running mainly a strat with a DRRI so it's a pretty typical setup. I bought this as the drive for a small board with four pedals. I just wanted a basic, very portable, but tasty setup and have been wanting to try one of these.
First, I've never played a Dumble but have owned several pedals that are trying to emulate that sound. This is not only the best sounding of those but is very versatile, VERY. Low gain has that awesome little crunch that sounds so great with single coils. Tight bass, strong mids but not nasally and perfect amount of compression. Using the treble and deep knobs, almost all of the gain range is not only useable but a legit great sound. It can be detailed and grainy or smooth and soaring. What will keep you playing for a long time though is the higher gain range where it can get those beautiful fat sounds that I expect a cranked Dumble to sound like. Robben Ford all day long. The deep knob will get you fat, and then the treble will blend in clarity where you want it. I really wish other pedals had these two controls. They are intuitive and simple. I've owned a lot of drives over the years, and use Kingsley on my big board and am thrilled by this little pedal. Totally worth it.

A+++++

By Jake from TX

So I love "d style" overdrives. I've owned an ethos, dumbloid, twimble, multiple zendrives. Through my J-Mod 100, the ethos just didn't work, dumbloid was cool but too much gain for my taste, zendrive meh. The twimble sounded close but too much high end for the amp. I've been looking at the Dude for a few years now but it always sounded plain on the review videos. Once I saw johnnathancordy's demo I felt I needed to give it an honest chance and wow. It's super versatile and plays very well with others. The idea of a second one isn't out of the question. If you like the ODS style tone, give this a shot before you put some of those pricier options on a pedestal, they really aren't better.

Like No other

By Michael from Fort Wayne, IN
Music Background: Everything

I texted a fellow pedal/pedalboard/tone-chasing fanatic buddy of mine that I was getting ready to re-wire and finalize my pedalboard. My board had just 9 pedals on it after being scaled down to all my top picks over 35 years of playing. I asked him, "Before I do this and finalize my board, is there anything I'm missing?" Knowing that I'm obsessed with playing Blues, he replied..."Try The Dude from J. Rockett."

I already have the J. Rockett silver Archer on my board, so I was intrigued. I'll skip all the details of running it through all my amps with a bunch of different guitars. The end result is a pedal that sounds like nothing I've ever played before. And that's saying an awful lot when you're talking about literally hundreds of Boost/ODs on the market...many of which sound very much the same.

The Dude pedal has an incredibly wide range of varying tones, all of which are incredibly stunning, inspiring, and stank-face inducing. My pedalboard is FINALLY finished!

Great Pedal

By Ian

Available tones range from a barely discernible soft clipping to a distortion suitable for most needs (I was playing Metallica Orion on it earlier today). At lower Ratio (clipping) settings the over drive is smooth as silk. At higher Ratio settings the pedal growls. The Treble and Deep knobs allow for a lot of tone sculpting. The circuit does not seem to like to be driven via a preceding boost pedal, but does act as a good boost pedal itself. I run The Dude into my Nobels ODR-1 mini with great results. Finally, someone described The Dude tone as being similar to a Klon tone with more available clipping. I agree with that assessment.

Great Overdrive for Single Coil Pickups

By Moe
Music Background: Gigging musician and many years as a hobbyist

After taking a break for a few years to focus on keyboards, I've recently gotten back into playing guitar. When I first learned to play, I never really used pedals, so there's been a bit of a learning curve, and I've found that my guitar (Squire Jazzmaster) doesn't play well with a lot of overdrives out there. While the guitar sounds beautiful when playing clean, overdrives tend to amplify the hum of the guitar nearly as much as the actual tone. In particular, I had tried a Rat 2 and just couldn't get any usable sound from it. My brother lent me the Dude, and my initial impression was just that it worked well as a boost. After playing with it a bit more, I realized that I simply didn't understand the controls, which break from conventional naming conventions, and it really works like any other pedal of this nature. Level is exactly, what you would think, Ratio is a blend knob for completely dry to completely saturated, and the Treble and Deep knobs serve as a two-band EQ, which is very effective for on the fly changes and dialing in just the sound that you want. Best of all, though, is that there is very little noise from this pedal no matter the Ratio setting. I must admit that I am not familiar with the inspiration for this pedal Fuchs Audio's ODS Series of amps, but this sounds great. Lastly, it's a very compact pedal, and the top mounted jacks are great for saving space on the pedal board. There are some overdrives that I want to try, and I am not quite committed to buying it for myself and keeping it on my board, but this is certainly a contender, and I feel some reluctance at thought of giving it back to my brother. Very glad to see J. Rockett pedals on Sweetwater and feel that they are good boutique option to consider.

J. Rockett is great addition to Sweetwater's lineup of

By Nicky

Carson, Congratulations on excellent choice.
Not long ago I did rebuild of my pedal board using JROCKETT pedals. In fact it was The Archer & The Dude.
I"ve been endorser of Hermida Audio (Zendrive)and Mesa Boogie pedals for some time. Like many geetar players swapping pedals or building newer boards is a monthly trend. I"m more like a yearly plan. (-;
I"m really enjoying the interaction of The Archer with clean, over drive, and Fuzz. Not every Klon style pedal is that versatile.
I"m a fan of "Dumble like" pedals, and I"ve had a decent collection over the years. I was very interested in how The Dude would fit. It"s been more than I expected. The ratio circuit and the tone stack are an excellent design.
The build quality is fantastic.
I feel that JROCKETT will be added value to the Sweetwater pedal line up.
Best to you.
