JHS The Clover Preamp Pedal Reviews

Preamplifier Guitar/Bass Pedal with 3-band EQ and Low-cut Filter

Based on a preamp pedal from the '80s favored by the Edge from U2 and other discerning players, The Clover preamp pedal from JHS is primed to be your always-on tone-shaping tool. It's equipped for acoustic, electric, and bass guitars, with your choice of 1/4-inch or balanced XLR outputs. In addition to the 3-band EQ, The Clover makes it easy to tighten up your sound with its side-mounted Low-cut DIP switch. And with plenty of boost available, you can use The Clover preamp pedal to overdrive your favorite amplifier.

Super useful in so many applications

By Marc

I actually bought this pedal as a bass and acoustic DI/preamp. I found it for a good price, so I took a chance, though I was skepctical at first. Even at full price the quality to price ratio is good, IMO. As a bass preamp directly into a PA or interface I love it - its exactly the sound I want - I actually prefer it to most bass amps I've played. As an acoustic preamp into a PA or interface it also sound great. I actually probably won't use it much as a guitar pedal, since I have preamps and EQs that already do what I need them to do, but I will say that the EQ capabilities of the Clover are excellent, and the volume serves as a big clean boost. It's a good unit for guitars. I found the "No EQ" and "No Mids" to have a pretty good set of frequencies that I could use in many settings, without having to switch on to "Full EQ" for tweaking, though the EQ controls are sensitive and useful. I think its a great utility pedal.

Always on

By Sweetwater Customer

I use this to sort of keep all my gain pedals under control, in between my last distortion pedal and the first modulation pedal in the chain (my Princeton has no effects loop). Thanks to Connor Bowdoin for his recommendation here, he nailed what I was after. I really like the eq as well, it has a very notable influence on the tone and really lets you dial in different sounds. I've neve owned a Vox, but this pedal makes me think I know what one sounds like with some tweaking.

Sweetens your tone

By Brian S. from Mass
Music Background: Life long musician

The clover preamp pedal makes an amp have the clarity in tone we can lose, due to signal loss from equipment that we use. I've tried it through a couple of my setup's: a modded fender deluxe, little practice amps and my Amplified Nation O D Reverb. It's a pedal you need that you don't know you need until you try it.

Best Acoustic D/I on the Market

By Bobby F. from Waxahachie, TX
Music Background: Professional Musician

I purchased this to use with my Martin OMJM for live acoustic gigs. This is by far the best tone shaper you can use for an acoustic guitar. It also doubles as a D/I Box which is extremely useful.

Most sound guys, unless they are professional audio engineers, leave your acoustic guitar sounding thin. Now I'm able to add breadth and body to my sound without having to plead with the AV guy.

FOR VOCALS!!!

By Sweetwater Customer

I use this as a vocal preamp to drive my voice into other guitar pedals. LOVE IT! It allows me to get a little sparkle and grit while cutting the low end rumble.

Sounds killer

By Kelvin M. from Indianapolis, IN

I run guitar into this, then UA Starlight, the UA Ruby … which is perfect for a U2 sound! Like the U2 Rattle and Hum sound. The EQ is very useable and sounds good… not something you need to struggle to dial in. Very cool "add magic to your sound" pedal.

Excellent Pedal

By Jay
Music Background: Guitar - Production

JHS is known for good pedal design and this is another great design. I've been wanting some kind of boost or pre-amp or compression pedal for a while now and tried the Xotic SP for a bit but returned it. Moving on to this pedal it's been great so far. I like how it can be very transparent on the EQ but add some nice harmonics to the guitar. Strumming a chord with it on is always much nicer as you can hear all the notes vs. them melding together. My amp is an Eggnater 15 tweaker which is very nice and sounds great - this pedal just makes it sound that much sweeter. It's also nice for my overdrive pedals - the EQ can boost back what they seem to cut. Overall very happy - it's an always on pedal for me.

Super tone shaping for Guitar.

By Matthew S. from Palm Harbor, Florida
Music Background: Guitarist don’t care to say how long!

The Clover is a really great tone shaping tool for your Guitar. The rotary switch gives a large palate to work with and as a bonus it works great as a boost as well to push your tubes to saturation.

5/5 Stars

By Bruce

This is a great pedal. It really shapes your tone or enhance your tone if you are wanting more. Bass, Mids and Treble have a wide sweep so it can really add or take away. For the price and what this pedal offers, 5/5...

Secret Sauce

By Sweetwater Customer

Even in "No EQ" mode this pedal enhances your tone. In "Full EQ" you can precisely dial in your tone. Incredible range on the 3 band eq.

just what I wanted

By JON from IL

I put this guy at the end of my chain for a little tone sculpting and to push my AC15's pre-amp/tubes and it does both of those things perfectly.

The Perfect Solution...

By Tim L. from OH
Music Background: Former studio musician , guitar - vocals... Also toured as band member and soloist / contemporary christian music.

The JSH Clover is the perfect solution for the issue I was dealing with. Going direct into the board playing at church was causing a lack of signal with my foot stoppers . The Clover Preamp Pedal boosted the signal to allow my guitar to be heard...

Gets the job done.

By Wilks
Music Background: Church, small gigs, and bedroom player.

I wanted to start a small acoustic pedalboard. I wanted a preamp/boost so I could adjust most of the EQ with a pedal instead of messing with my mixer. It sounds great and is easy to use. I always trust JHS and sweetwater.

Swiss Army Knife of guitar pedals

By Sweetwater Customer

I guess this pedal is based on a classic boost pedal that is out of production, but the features make me see it like a highly versatile DI. It's got plenty of gain, EQ that can be bypassed, a low-cut switch, ground lift, & XLR out. It sounds great on guitar and bass.

Multi-tasker

By Dave from DC

Love this pedal. Was using it as a pre-amp on a pedal board used as a practice headphone platform. Then used it in front of a tube pre-amp to push and add sustain & sizzle. Worked great for both of those applications. It also works as an EQ and an always on sort of sonic maximizer deal. It really opens up my guitars and makes them all sound better, and works well in different locations in my signal chain.

This is the holy grail of tone

By Gregg from Williams
Music Background: Singer songwriter

I received the pedal last night, plugged it in and was impressed instantly. Josh and crew at JHS have created the perfect pre-amp/eq pedal. I'm not really sure if there is anything comparable out there. I use two amps in my rig with humbuckers, strats, P90's and my telecaster. Each guitar has different frequency ranges which required me to adjust each amp for each guitar. I've tried eq pedals but they are all tone suckers in one way or another. The clover allows you to set up your amps and just adjust the eq needed for each guitar prior to going into other pedals and amps. The pre-amp is super clean and the clovers eq choices are all usable. You need this pedal. I'd also like to give a shout out to Darius Beats and crew at sweetwater. You folks are the best in the business:)

Brought my P90s to life!

By G from Peoria, IL

I’ve never been this impressed with a pedal. I was looking into replacement P90s until I plugged into the Clover. Pickups I thought were lifeless came alive with character and nuance. The way it overdrives your amp (I have a Supro 1970RK) sounds more true to the guitar than my Keeley Aria pedal’s overdrive. In addition, I no longer need my EQ pedal to help my stock Gibson P90s. Amazing!

A Pedal You Didn’t Know You Needed!

By D. P.

Simply an amazing pedal. I have this set at the front of my chain and it’s amazing what a little tweaking on the EQ can do for your sound. It works extremely well as a boost pedal. This pedal is extremely versatile on its own and working with other pedals. I did not realize how badly I needed one of these.

Handy Dandy Versatile Pedal

By JYelton from Logan, UT

I got this primarily as a preamp for my Tele which has lower output than other guitars. I had an EQ pedal next on my wish list, but soon realized I wouldn't need it. The Clover is more than adequate for some quick EQ adjustments and provides a nice clean boost which is exactly what I wanted. Adds punch and power to otherwise ho-hum signals with very little noise. Josh is awesome. His pedals are too. Go and get one. You won't be blue. (Unless you play blues, that's cool, too.)

Great for Acoustic!

By Brett
Music Background: Worship Leader

I bought this pedal to use as a Preamp/DI for my acoustic guitar. It does not disappoint. Easy to dial in and has great tone. Works as a wonderful boost as well. Simple eq options makes it easy to dial in. A great simple solution for someone that wants to build a small pedalboard for a grab and go setup.

JHS Clover pedal!

By David from Texas Blues Country
Music Background: Blues and classic rock

I never thought that I needed a preamp pedal until I tried the JHS Clover. Wow! What a difference in sound quality! I"m getting rich tone that I never knew I had, and by the way my 70"s Crybaby has been awakened. I run the Clover on the front end before the amp. The EQ is very nice as well. Try it you won"t be disappointed.
