Lovely aesthetics to it as well as function. The gain is a nice touch as well as the super bright LEDs :p

Add one of these to your setup. Run it in the effects loop before delay and reverb. You can mail in any sound from there. A+++

Change or refine your guitar or amp sound

By Tyler Moe from MN on January 24, 2024 Music Background: 20+ yr guitarist and Metalhead

In front of the chain, end of the chain or FX chain. You really can't go wrong. But I'm currently putting it in the FX chain of the amp. It's a Peavey 6505+ 4x12. While I'm not looking to change the guitars sound, I wasn't big on some of the upper high frequencies when that gain is cranked. Between this 10 band in the FX, and a speaker swap, the amp feels reborn again while still keeping it's characteristics. Really nice VOL and GAIN optional sliders as well! Well done and thank you MXR!

MXR M108S 10 band EQ pedal

By Sweetwater Customer on December 20, 2023

Great pedal! I can shape the sound of my small bass amp and removed some of those unwanted frequencies, get more low frequency and highs for slapping.

It's 18 volts, but does it die on 9 volts?

By Pat The IT Guy on December 19, 2023

Nope! Being a guy, I naturally toss the instructions and just hooked it up to my Truetone 1spot pro CS12 9vdc... Who reads instructions?!

I noticed something very interesting. I couldn't tell whether the pedal was active or not because the LEDs for input and output, the ones on the ends, we're lit all the time. The ones in the middle-the LEDs that show you the current level of a particular frequency-were off.

So what's the first thing you think? "I must have a defective product! It's never me!"... So I went online and looked at videos and sure enough those 10 in the middle were supposed to light. Better get that return started... " Why can't they check these things before they put them in the box?!"

But not because I'm an electronics engineer, and being too much of a guy to go dig up the actual paper instructions in the box, I went online to see the specs for the pedal and noticed it was in fact 18 volts. When I use my cell phone, instead of having the instruction spread out, I can hide my shame easier, and not my head slowly acting as if I knew it the whole time. It was all just a test, and of course the pedal passed the test with flying colors.

Even at degraded performance, the fact that it doesn't cut the signal chain is commendable.
The real bottom line here is that the pedal actually defaults to usefulness instead of uselessness if you underpower it like I did. And that is something that either is incredibly accidental, or incredibly insightful and smart by the people at MXR.

I wonder which one of the two they would admit to...

P.S. If it is truly designed to work to specification at 9 volts, but simply not using the LEDs for the power draw, then this is a truly remarkable pedal. However, it is likely from reviews I have seen online about running it on 9 volts, that the actual circuitry suffers. A recommendation to MXR would be to sense the 9 volts and forget the LEDs completely, thus allowing you to have the pedal run, albeit at higher current because you'd have to use a buck to get it up to 18 volts in order to give you the headroom the plus and minus 12 dB sliders offer. A redesign or mod would sense the input voltage under 18 volts, and switch on a buck boost converter that would give you the higher DC voltage, but at a frequency higher than the audio spectrum. A mod like this would be around $1.50 to $2.00.

Good quality, does what it's supposed to do!

By Ben Arnold from Kentucky on December 12, 2023 Music Background: Long time guitar hobbyist

I grabbed one of these for two reasons (as opposed to the Boss equalizer EQ-6 or whatever that pedal is branded). One, you get a 10 band equalizer instead of, and two it has stereo output and I run a stereo rig. Aside from that, I'm very happy with the pedal. It doesn't do anything particularly special it just does what it's supposed to do with no fuss.

Would definitely recommend especially if someone is running a stereo setup or if you have a Deluxe Reverb or something like that - which I do - and it only has 2 knobs - treble and bass - to dial in your tone.

Perfect

MXR E.Q. pedal

By Larry B. on October 19, 2023 Music Background: 40 plus years just learning new stuff everyday.

The MXR pedal has been a good decision in adding to pedal board. The pedal is well built and allows you to shape all tones you need depending on where you place in chain. Highly recommend having E.Q.that is quality and MXR is.

Very Effective EQ Pedal

By Robert Malone from Arnold, MD on September 19, 2023 Music Background: Playing since 1964

I bought this EQ pedal to pair with my Fender Blues Jr IV, which sounded OK, but seemed kind of anemic at low volumes. I only play clean, I don't use pedals, and live in an apartment, so I have to keep the volume reasonable. After connecting the MXR, holy cow, what a difference! The added depth and clarity of the tone, even at low volume, really surprised me. It's like a whole new amp. I would say I can almost get it to sound like my Twin Reverb now.
The adjustments on the sliders that I did were relatively minor. The sliders are very responsive. Even the slightest movement on the bands results in easily heard changes to the tone. I'm glad I made this purchase and would recommend this pedal.

What my tone was missing!!!

By Stanislaus Kaszuba from Iron River, WI on September 1, 2022

This pedal was game changing for my tone shaping capabilities, and the fact that it can act like a boost pedal is great! Really brings out the beautiful tone of my amp. Would recommend to any guitar player regardless of genre

The Best is not necessarily the most expensive

By Eric Gendell from Jersey City,, NJ on September 1, 2022 Music Background: Full Time Musician

In my pursuit of the perfect tone modulator, I purchased several different EQ's at a variety of different price points.

My first was a 6 band MXR, which I traded in for a 10 band MXR.

I later purchased and returned a Empress Parametric EQ, with which I was completely underwhelmed. I recently purchased a Boss EQ 200, which I did a side by side comparison where I determined the MXR was better by a long shot, so I decided to return the Boss, which also cost twice as much and buy another MXR 10 Band EQ for my bass rig, since I am using the first one in my guitar rig. Besides having far better tone, the volume and gain sliders are far louder than the than the BOSS 15 Db boost.

I did ano0ther side by side comparrison between the 3 year old and brand new MXR's don't know whether the difference is the result of decline due to age or manufacture, but the new one sounds more crisp.

I am not a fan of extra electronic bells and whistles, not only because they are a distraction, but because the more electronics, the more fragile and likely to break down and stop working at the worst moment possible.

The MXR is built like a tank and is not saturated in garish neon colors, with blue LED lights in the sliders which I happen to like very much. The MXR is just a simple, beautiful, well engineered product in an aluminum case that does what it is supposed to do. The People at Dunlop/MXR are lovely people who provide great service.

I could not be Happier with both of my 10 Band MXR Eq's. The degree of tone control for both guitar and bass is excellent and I have 23 guitars and basses of every type and description, each of which require different tonal settings.

Game changing for tone AND controlling volume!

By Kenneth Rose from CORDOVA, TN on July 13, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist, Sound Engineer, Producer, Associates Degree in Music

I run this pedal through the effects loop of my Peavey 6505+ head and it takes an amp that already sounds great to another level. An added bonus of running it through the effects loop is you can attenuate the volume of your entire rig without sacrificing tone, meaning I can jam this insanely loud half stack (running through a Mesa 4x12) with jaw dropping tone at bedroom levels. You can cut a total of 24db of volume so I just ride the volume slider up or down depending on whether the neighbors have pissed me off that day or not. Haha

Oh, it comes from the factory with REALLY bright LED's for each band...and as you see in the pics the outside faders (Volume and Gain) are always on regardless of pedal status. However, a simple mod found on Youtube shows how you can easily make those stay off as well as turn them all off permanently if used in an always on situation such as mine. Very cool pedal that sounds great, just be sure to use the included power supply as this is an 18 volt pedal.

MXR ten band Eq, Boost and Splitter

By Randal Bennett from DAYTON, OH on April 13, 2022

Having this for about a month I can finally make a good review. Very solid build quality and packaging with one quirk I'll get to later. Solid cast aluminum shell with brushed and clear coat finish. Solid foot switch action. Nice clean faders, able to supply 12 db of boost or cut. 2 outputs allow powering 2 amps or effect chains. When eq and boost is on 12 bright blue lights show everything when it's in bypass 2 light to show the power is on. The included "Dunlap Quick Guide" is 73 pages long in 12 languages. Print size is .048 much less than 1/16th of an inch and it mentions a few other products but not this one. It is very intuitive to use tho and everything you really need to know is printed on the unit. I'm a nut for reading the manual after try everything to see if I missed anything. Also it comes with a high quality MXR sticker.

Ridiculously great sound, ridiculously useful.

By Ted Preiss from Black Canyon City, AZ on March 30, 2022

Amazing sound for such a compact unit

By Lance from Ross on February 5, 2022 Music Background: I love playing guitar

I have a dual 15 band rack mounted MXR equalizer for stage use,and this 10 band MXR sounds just as good. I use this unit in my practice setup. This is an absolute must have for dialing in much needed frequency boost.

The most important pedal you can own

By Steven Smith from North Palm Beach, FL on January 8, 2022 Music Background: 58 years performing and still going

I did a lot of research before I purchased this and was not disappointed. If you play varied settings, especially outdoors, this is a must have. All equalizer pedals do the same thing but this fine tunes better due to the 10 bands. A real added benefit I didn't realize until I got it, it has a volume adjustment and a gain adjustment which makes a whole lot of difference as mine is the end of the pedal chain. Two outputs gives even more versatility for running 2 amps. The only thing that could have made this better was a switch for the outputs like an A B, A and B setup. Still for the price it has more than enough utility.

Great for reshaping amp sounds

By Chris L from OR on November 28, 2021 Music Background: Occasional bar jams

I put this in the effects loop of an Origin20 - Wow! I can now shape that bugger to sound like nearly any Marshall out there. I have it set for a nice JCM800 sound now....when I click the FX loop off - it is a glorious Plexi sound. Great investment to get two amps out of one.

MXR analog 10 band EQ

By Michael Mervin on August 24, 2021

For the $, its great and it will make
all the difference in applying the final
makeup on your idealized tone, providing
you've got a good tone to begin with

This is an all analog true bypass circuit, not the same as digital eqs on the market. I've been down the digital eq road. There ok and I suppose they have there place for some people

I'm just stating that this analog eq does make all the difference I was looking for

Absolute Must Have

By Ian from New York on February 17, 2021 Music Background: Technical Death Metal Guitarist

If you are serious about guitar playing and have a board set up, this is an absolute must have, always on effect. Is it the most exciting pedal? No. Is it the most fun pedal? No. But is it the most important pedal I own? Yes. It is the backbone of a good tone and if I was told to gig with an amp and 1 pedal, this would be it. I can find my distorted sound in the amp, but you need this to sound good. 10/10

Perfect for my unique use...

By Todd Crush from Arkansas on February 17, 2021 Music Background: serious

I am not using this in a traditional sense, but I am very happy with it. I play bass along with the music on my ipod. I use this pedal in the line with my ipod to take out the bass on the original track so that I am not competing with it. It performs this task wonderfully. I am able to dial in an eq with enough body but also cutting out the bass so that I can play along unaffected. Built very well and fancy lights....

One of the best pedals you can buy!

By Carry Osborne from Virginia on February 15, 2021 Music Background: Hobbyist/amateur player, play mostly modern metal

First thing's first: this pedal is a great, responsive EQ that allows for detailed tone shaping. So if you are looking for something more than a 3, 5, or 7 band EQ, this is the one to get. But more importantly, and more surprisingly, it does something else: when put in the FX loop, it makes an amp sound significantly better overall. I've only used the pedal with two amps (one solid-state combo amp and one tube amp mini head) and for both of them, the pedal made them sound fuller, punchier, louder (but not problematically so), and simply more pleasing to the ear. In fact, when used with a Boss Katana Artist MkII combo, the amp went from sounding pretty meh to sounding actually great! I'm not sure how the pedal does this, but honestly, it's worth buying for this feature alone (assuming it does this on all or most amps). Highly recommended!

Great equalizer

By Sweetwater Customer on February 5, 2021

The difference maker

By Tim H from Alum Creek WV on January 19, 2021 Music Background: Blues desciple

First eq pedal I have ever owned. Did my research and was impressed with the features. It definitely lives up to it's reputation. Just the slightest adjustments to the gain or frequencies makes a musical difference to your tone. Put it in the loop of my HT5mkii to give more control over the clean channel. Works great and is super quiet. The extra output opens the door to flexibility. Highly recommend.

Best addition to my pedal board

By Brian Drennan from MAUMEE, OH on January 1, 2021

This thing is the most magical pedal I own. I use a Fender Deluxe Reverb as my main amp, and the boost on this pedal help to really dial in the exact sound that I'm looking for. It also makes leveling the differences in output from my various guitars a lot easier during a live performance, to help maintain a consistent degree of volume. You could use this as a boost as well, which is very useful.

Must have.

By Alex on December 8, 2020

These types of pedals are some of the most under-rated pieces of gear one can get. They are versatile and can be used pretty much anywhere on your board, and can drastically alter your sound, or even be used as a subtle boost. Whatever your cup of tea may be, this thing is great. I run mine through the fx loop, and it was exactly what I was looking for: noiseless, accurate, durable, and full of options for sculpting tone. Really happy with it. The only thing that I can complain about is the fact that the leds in the sliders are absolutely blinding. So just like the sun, don't stare for too long.

Game changer

By Dan A Couvillon from CA on November 25, 2020

Was having trouble on rehearsal rig - moving to different spaces and playing at different volumes was frustrating. Could have the tone dialed in for solo practice in my garage only to have the sound turn to muddy garbage in our rehearsal space at volume with the band. The 10 band EQ pedal includes the EQ as well as gain and volume which really allow me to dial the sound I want and carry it with me. I use this pedal in conjunction with the MXR compression pedal and it's been a game changer. No more fiddling with tone when I move - just set up and play. Get it.

Tone beast

This gem can give that little extra to an 8 inch speaker or really round out your tone on your main rig. Fine engineering and construction. This is worth much more than the price.

MXR M108S Ten Band EQ Pedal

By Gary A. from Dallas/Fort Worth Texas Metroplex on October 18, 2020

I previously owned a GE-7 EQ Pedal that had quite a bit of inherent hiss so I was surprised to find this pedal is nice and quiet. It has added quite a few capabilities to my Bass amp. I mainly bought it to cut the 40Hz frequency to protect my speakers. It does this but so much more. I have it connected in the effects loop of my amp. The amp itself has some hiss when Drive is cranked over half. This pedal was able to reduce it quite a bit by totally cutting 8Khz and lowering 4Khz to flat position (mid). I am very happy with this Equalizer.

Versatile

By A.Tonesmith from MT on July 10, 2020 Music Background: Guitar : 57yrs.

This unit is quite compact. With a VOL to set the Output, and a GAIN to set its Input, it can be used Before or After any effect, and produce any desired signal level needed. Its operation is quiet. With 2 Output Jacks, EXOTIC uses are available to the creative. It can perform as a straight Volume BOOST, or an almost, infinitely variable TONE shaping Volume BOOST as a STAND alone, being its Own Effect. The unit comes with an 18V Power Supply, adding $$$ to the value. When Power is applied to the pedal, the VOL & GAIN LED's come ON (think Pilot Light), regardless of any cables plugged in. The remaining 10 LED's go ON and OFF with the Foot Switch to indicate EFFECT status. They are quite bright for their tiny size. Overall, a Small Board Foot Print, with a Big Sound.

Useful Tone Shaping and as Signal Router

By Nathan King from Shawnee, OK on April 25, 2020 Music Background: Professional Musician and Educator

By Tim from PA on September 12, 2019 Music Background: Live Performance

The color this pedal adds to an acoustic guitar on a flat setting is worth it alone. But I usually cut 250 to eliminate hum and boost 500 and 1k. It really cleans up the sound. Paired with a QSC K8.2 you can"t go wrong.

Don't Be A Moron Like Me

By Michael Yolch from Ft. Wayne, IN on August 20, 2019

I've spent so many years swapping out countless overdrives and distortion pedals on my board without it ever occurring to me that I could have gotten so much more out of them with this EQ. So many times I would have a pedal and think..."Man, if it just had a big boost in this frequency range, it would be killer."

Or, I'd have an amp and think the same thing. Since buying this 10-band EQ, I have created so many awesome tones from all my pedals and amps alike. Don't be a moron like me, just buy the thing now!

Great EQ !

By Vanya from Los Angeles on March 5, 2019 Music Background: Pro Musician

I play bass (5 string Schecter Stilleto extreme) and I am using this pedal after my Tech21 DP3X pedal to do some extra sculpting and final touches to my sound. I think it's a great tool to carve out some rumble in bass area or low mids and clear that all up so bass can cut through better and fill the room with a nice tight low end Also if you wanna add some sizzle to the top or roll off some harshness in high end register, this will get the job done. It's very forgiving and musical in boosting AND cutting.
Every venue is different so it's really good to have an EQ like this where you can, in a matter of a few minutes, change or fix problems in your sound.
It's pretty looking pedal, it's rugged, simple to use n(assuming you know how EQ works) and overall great addition to any musician who needs a good quality EQ.

All I ever needed

By Blake from KY on February 17, 2019 Music Background: Hobbyist

I am 48 years old and have spent 3/4 of that time chasing tone, particularly distortion. Through 12+ overdrive and distortion pedals and at least that many tube and modeling amps, I have always come oh so close to achieving what I consider the perfect "CRUNCH & CHUG" but seem to be always lacking that one little element. After discussing my frustrations with a long time friend, who is a professional musician, he suggested I give an EQ pedal or rack module a try. With all the 3 band EQs on amps and pedals, a separate EQ interface never crossed my mind. After doing some research I chose the MXR 10 band EQ and WOW!!! I cannot believe I went around with my head up my u know what for so many years. This thing was exactly what I had been needing for all these years. It literally has transformed all my gear. Guitars that have been sitting around collecting dust are now getting much deserved attention. A real game changer, wish I new how well these things worked a long time ago; I could have saved a small fortune in pedals and amps. I would highly recommend and as always, thanks to Sweetwater and Jason Theile.

MXR M108S ten band eq

By Sweetwater Customer on December 23, 2018 Music Background: 40 years semi-pro player and full pro repairman

Truly quiet, as far as my ears can hear. I play pedal steel guitar and some of my guitars are darker tonally than others and my Quilter ProBlock 200, an otherwise exquisite amp, doesn't have enough eq capabilities to brighten up my favorite guitar. With the M108S in the FX loop and just a small bump at 2K and 4K the guitar sounds perfect to me. And the true bypass button gives me an excellent A-B test. Next I want to try it in my Mackie board, which doesn't have eq for the monitors or two outputs for the monitors. I'm guessing this will do the trick.

GREAT EQ!!!

By Jason McDermott from Little Egg Harbor, NJ on November 27, 2018

MXR makes the best pedals, man. I like the new design with blue LEDs and brushed aluminum box. Very responsive bandwidth, volume and gain sliders. Extra output is very handy too. A very solid pedal that is better than the original.

USEFUL TOOL

By Stanton from USA on November 8, 2018 Music Background: Former pro bass player, now just play for myself

I've used this pedal with several basses. No matter what pickups are used, whether the stock pups on a $299 bass or high-end EMGs, Bartolinis, Seymour Duncans and so forth, the MXR M108S allows a greater variety of tonal variations. With the 10 EQ bands, you can modify the tone a little or a lot. Makes inexpensive basses with low-end pickups sound much better. True bypass, no hiss, rugged build quality, 12dB of cut and boost, plus volume and gain sliders. The only complaint--not enough for me to downgrade it--is that the blue LEDs on each slider are, for me, just a bit too bright. But they're definitely bright enough to see if you're playing an outdoor venue on a sunny day. All in all, a great pedal, especially for the money. Kudos to my Sales Engineer, Matt Kreager, for recommending it to me.

Incredibly Useful Pedal With Many Uses

By Sweetwater Customer on August 13, 2018

This is the first EQ pedal I ever got, wanting to have more tone shaping options for my guitar, but found that it has more uses than i expected. The obvious use for it is as a regular EQ, which it does really well as +-12 db is a very wide range, and far more than you would think. Some other uses are using it to shape your gain sound (tighten it up with less bass, more ir less mids to controll the crunch and cramyness, etc.) or boost your signal into higher gain, possibly both at once. A different use I wasn"t expecting was that since it has 2 outputs, you can use it to take a DI track for reamping later if needed while recording. I think that this is an essential pedal for any guitarist.

I never knew how much of a difference an EQ pedal could make. You can really get that sound that you hear in your head. I also really like the way it looks compared to some other EQ's. No noise and very powerful.

Very clean looking, bright LED's, low noise and perfect tone shaping at a great price.

Cut the crap

By Roger Whiting from San Fernando, CA on January 20, 2018 Music Background: Musician, composer, engineer

Very simple and easy hookup. Clean look and shapes but does not color my sound which is what I want. Glad I went with the 10 band, giving me more cut/boast options. The included 18 volt power supply is a bonus in this day and age.I currently use it through the Fx loop of my Boogie 5:50 Express.

Best $ I’ve Spent

By Kris from Austin on January 12, 2018 Music Background: Professional Bass Player

Great little pedal at a great price. I play bass and was always running into the problem of having my otherwise great sound compromised by horrible sounding venues. I"d find myself turning the bass down to get rid of boom only to have my bass not sound like a bass. Now you can dial out the frequencies you don"t want more specifically. My bass has never sounded better. Even other members of my band have commented that my bass sounds better than ever.

GREAT pedal that you didn't know you needed!

By Sweetwater Customer from California on November 2, 2017

Bought this on a kind of whim seeing as I've read so much about it and wanting to mess with my tone/sound.
Amazing what it can do with and without distortion. I play (mess) with it every-other day to see what else it can do.
Very fun and enjoyable to have in my pedal chain.

Dynamite

By Rich from Texas on September 27, 2017

Never knew how an eq pedal can make such a difference on tone, feel, and overall space in a mix... it's important in any application. You'll have a more refine tone and sound, create more space for vocals or other instruments, and get different tones you regularly can't get from your rig. Endless possibilities and very adaptive, one of the best but overlooked pedals to have. You'll be able to make your instrument pop in the mix and get sounds you've always wanted at any volume.

Just what I needed!

By John D from Philadelphia, PA on September 20, 2017

This EQ Pedal just makes everything sound much better. It lets you fine tune pedals that you were not quite happy with. Great purchase as far as I am concerned. I thought it was going to be bigger than it is considering that it is a ten band EQ but it does not take up too much space on the board. Also it comes with an 18 volt power supply so that is also good if you are running out of outlets on your pedal power brick.

Just What I Needed!

By Bill from New York City on September 5, 2017

The MXR M108S 10 Band EQ Pedal has worked out to be more than I expected. The tone quality is fantastic and the volume and gain send solos to the right level to cut threw the mix to shine. I play threw two amps so having two outputs on the pedal is right up my ally. My only complaint is it could be a little larger. But overall this is a great sounding pedal for anyone that needs a little EQ in their life.

Great EQ

By Robert from Oklahoma on August 15, 2017

Very simple to set up and use. I was able to dial out some tones I didn't care for and bring out the ones I wanted. Seems pretty solid so far.

Great pedal

I have the older model as well. The newer version sounds much cleaner to me. Throw this in your effects loop and the party starts.

Amazing

By Jeremiah on February 21, 2017

This is a great pedal. I run it through the effects loop of my Peavey 6534+ and the tone of the amp couldn't be better. It took only a matter of minutes to dial in the tone I was loooking for. I recommend putting it through the effects loop which changes the tone of the amp. Much tighter and better sounding than running it through the chain which will just change the tone of the pickups.

What a difference this pedal makes

By Jay from North Carolina on February 15, 2017 Music Background: Professional

I have been trying to dial in the sound in my head and was finally able to accomplish it with his pedal. I use it in my effects loop and it has an amazing effect on my overall tone. I could not imagine playing without this pedal now; my amp now sounds dead without the pedal engaged.

Great EQ!

By F.X. Schmidt on February 12, 2017

I finally added an EQ to my pedal chain. I was always hesitant because a lot of them create too much noise! This new M108S It is quiet, sounds great and has true bypass. It hardly weighs anything and the blue led's are really bright( you could use it as flashlight). The included 18 volt power supply and stereo out are great to have! Tone shaping or lead boost, you can do it!

Makes good guitar amps great!

By Michael from midwest on February 26, 2024 Music Background: blues, classic rock, classic metal

I have a couple of "British amps" that I've had a love/hate relationship with. They sound good but a little muddy with a strange upper end harshness. I tried different speakers, different cabs and every EQ setting but couldn't get it quit right. Bought this, threw it in the effects loop and in about 2 minutes the amps came alive and nailed the sound I had been chasing.

The great thing is that it gives you fine control over all the key frequencies. I got rid of that weird upper-end harshness, tightened the bass and got that all important midrange that was too specific for the very broad amp eq controls. Best of all, no added noise, in fact, it actually let me dial out most of the hiss I was getting at higher gain settings!

It's MXR so, of course it feels quality and I have no doubt it will last for years. I also love that it came with an 18 volt power supply. Bottom line, I can stop churning through amps and can now concentrate on making music. That's what it's all about.

Nothing is perfect

By Steven M from Idaho on May 19, 2023

All in all, I'm happy with this pedal. It definitely enhanced some issues I was having with not having enough base in my set up. It is very sensitive on the gain in volume but that may be different with other amplifiers and set ups. It's all a matter of individual needs, but all in all, I like it better than the six band equalizer that I bought before. Spend the money and get the tan band.

Incredible

By Alex from Austin on June 3, 2021

I don't usually use a crispy clean tone, but lately I've really wanted to. The clean on the 5150 works, but it's trebly, obviously. Enter this beast of a pedal. My keeley compressor has earned its spot on my board, but this thing has too! I take the gain either down or at neutral, cut some of those highs, put my guitar into the single coil mode, and it sounds warmer yet still retains some of that strat-esque characteristics.

This thing is a tonal weapon, and I know I haven't even scratched the surface of it. I don't think it'll completely change an amps core characteristics, but I'm not using it for that. The 5150 is it's own beast that I love, I just wanted to have an inspiring clean tone once in a while, and this pedal delivered on it!

I've had one for 12 years

By David Trammell from Geismar, LA on April 14, 2021 Music Background: 25+ Years

This is one of the first things I bought from Sweetwater, 12 years ago. It's a great tool. However, I noticed a long time ago that one of the 10 bands didn't have that physical "click" in the middle that locks it in at 0 dB gain. Yesterday I ran this into a DAW and spectrum analyzer for the first time and noticed that this problem slider is actually entirely broken (it doesn't do anything, though the light comes on). It was probably broken from the day I bought it and I just never noticed because it's one of the lowest bands.

So I just wanted to recommend to other purchasers to carefully check all bands that they actually work. Each band has a broad effect that exceeds the neighboring bands, so if you crank the lowest 31.25 hz band to +12 it should still boost your guitars low frequencies a little. I suppose the bands must be processed in parallel rather than series hence the product continues functioning even if one band breaks (a good thing). Although I suppose the design may have changed in 12 years.

Tame your amp with this pedal

By Ben Prusinski from Sacramento, CA on September 2, 2019 Music Background: hobbyist

I wanted a way to shape the tone and volume of my loud Peavey 6505 100 watt tube amp for bedroom levels without upsetting the neigbors and also to filter out the boxy low bass noise for cleaner tones. This pedal really delivers in so many ways. It is great as a boost pedal or to change tones easily for all styles of music. I use mine in the FX loop of my amp and it works wonders.

It is well worth the money and I wondered why I lived without an EQ pedal until now. Most amps have crappy EQ knobs so this makes a world of difference. Not cheap but love 10 band EQ.

Great but LED's are too bright

By Douglas Jones from Humble, TX on May 22, 2019 Music Background: 20+ years guitar

Okay first things first, this thing is incredibly flexible. Its an EQ so there isn't much else to say about that. sturdy construction. I haven't had any issues.

There is, however, one flaw this pedal has and to be fair its a trend in modern pedals.

*ahem*

why the HECK does everyone insist on using superbright ignite your retina blue led's in everything?! I can't look at this thing without it burning my EQ shape into my brain. Its annoying and I'm looking to swap these led's with something less bright visually.

EVERYONE is doing this, though, so maybe its the market dictating what oughta be and I'm the oddball.

If you need tons of flexibility buy one of these... and a paint pen.

Excellent tone shaper

By Wayne Kiladitis from New York on April 12, 2019

I'm no expert on EQs, but I'm liking this one. Great tone shaping and very visible on stage. My only gripe is that it's not as quiet as they advertise. It can be a bit noisy, especially if you're pushing that gain.
I definitely would recommend it to others though.

Great tone shaping options

By Tom from Middle of Nowhere Iowa on March 6, 2019 Music Background: Picky Hobbyist

This is a wonderful pedal in terms of its functionality. So let me first get this out of the way. I"ve seen other reviews that mention how bright the LED"s are and WOW they weren"t kidding. Once I got my tone where I wanted it, I had to cover the pedal because I could feel myself getting a headache from the glare. Now that that"s out of the way, let me say this pedal does everything you would hope a 10 band EQ would do for your guitar sounds. You can get very specific with how you dial in your tones, you can really dig in and sculpt your sound. If you"re playing a lead and need your notes well defined, kick up the mids, playin Metal need that nasty growl, scoop out the mids give it a slight boost in the 125/250 range...the point is, you have lots of options with this pedal. I will definitely recommend this pedal to my friends, just maybe get yourself some sunglasses while gettin it set

What a difference

By Ray from Brooklyn CT on November 18, 2018

Got it to clean up the blue channel on my EVH 5150iii EL34 50watt and man what a difference. Really diggin the versatility of this pedal. The LED"S are the only downfall way to bright but easy fix. Just pull the light out and turn it around and plug it back in. There chained like Christmas"s lights. And big props to the sales rep"s that helped me make a great choice! Always a pleasure doing business with sweetwater!

Simple and effective

By Jake D. from Ohio on September 2, 2018 Music Background: Amateur Guitar/Church Sound

This pedal isn't anything fancy, but of course everyone needs a good eq. This fulfills that need for me, and I don't see myself replacing it with a different pedal any time soon. Note that the lights are very bright and each slider has its own light. If there is a drawback to this it is that you can't stare directly at the sliders for long without getting a headache. Not a big deal, since I don't do much with this pedal on stage.

Perfect EQ:splitter

By C Gaffga from Louisiana on February 15, 2018 Music Background: Project studio, hobby band

So many ways to use this little guy. I"ve used it at a headphone monitor booster, which also helped take out unwanted frequencies in my singers voice. And able to notch out feedback.

I"ve used this live for bass-gives me more attack in the verse and less finger noise in the chorus.

Adds a little bottom end to my Tele...allows me to run a second amp.

Pretty transparent. No complaints!!

Excellent EQ

By John Derrico from Derry, NH on February 15, 2018

Allows me to dial in what I need. Used for recording and with rig.
Used with both guitar and bass. This is an upgrade from an old (still working) DOD FX-42 Bass EQ.

I'm only giving a 4.5 because of the damned blinding lights. Might use a Sharpie or even change some internal resistors if I have to.

Outside of looking at the sun (so to speak), I'd still recommend this to anyone.

Sound shaping magician

By Slacker from Syracuse, NY on October 22, 2017 Music Background: Hobbyist

Thinking about buying a new amp? Save yourself hundreds or thousands of $$$. This ten band EQ is a tone shaping beast. Fatten up lows, boost mids, cut highs - whatever you’re after this pedal can give your amp and tone a different sound. I’m so pleased with this addition to my pedal board. I would have rated it 5 stars but my only distraction (and it’s total personal) is the LED’s are SOOO bright, I’m afraid airplanes will be trying to land nearby. Buy this unit, it won’t disappoint!!

Not just for guitars….

By just Jeff the Dj from Maryland on December 15, 2021 Music Background: Years, used stone and bone as turntables. LOL

I was looking for a Eq to put between my microphone and my board. I have a deep voice and was looking for something to ease the rumble. Years ago I used a similar set up and loved it. So, going back in time and not seeing anything useful in todays market, I reverted to this type of set up and am not complaining. It performs well and does exactly what i was hoping for. The led lights are very bright, looking down at them. The switch could be a little better, seems a bit antiquated and is difficult to turn on and off without moving the whole pedal.

I’m going blind…

By Sweetwater Customer on December 6, 2021

I like this pedal. It sounds great and does what you'd expect a 10 band EQ to do. Its quite when operating in my pedal chain and looks/feels well built.
What I didn't expect was how crazy bright the LED's are.
Admittedly I got this because of the LED's on all the bands, as I like the idea of keeping tabs on my settings.
I just wish they'd have toned down the intensity of the lighting. I think I'm going to have to use a sharpie or something to try and mute the lights. I wouldn't return it because of this but if id known in advance how much it would hurt my eyes, id have opted for something else.

MXR 10 band

By Steven from Nashville on January 14, 2021

It does what it's supposed to do. One thing worth mentioning is that the LED's on this thing are bright. Like seeing into the future bright but they pull out if you don't like that.

10 bands, 0 drummers. Everybody wins.

By Sweetwater Customer on September 13, 2020

Downside? None that I can hear. Tone? Yes. Equalization? Highly likely.

If you're looking at this pedal because you need an eq pedal, just buy it already.

The pedal was a good value.

By Jerome from Deptford NJ on August 22, 2020

I have been with Sweetwater for a little less than 4 years now. My business with them really picked up when I started recording with computers. I used to buy non-technical items from some of the cheaper outlets just for the price.
I stopped doing that. Sweetwater guarantees anything you buy from them for two years, even if the manufacturer only gives you one year.
I had one studio monitor go bad. They took them both back and let me pick out new ones. There was a sale so I got the next size up for no additional charge.
Their tech support department is extremely useful, especially when you're buying software.
This is where I shop for all of my gear.

Great EQ pedal

By Ben Prusinski from Sacramento, CA on June 2, 2019

I needed a way to clean up the bass of my Peavey 6505 amp for better scooped sounds for rock and metal. I placed this in my amp FX loop and wowzer what a big difference it makes! Plus I can use it to get metal distortions and good tone at bedroom levels without an expensive power attenuator which is useless on high gain amps like the Peavey 6505 because you have most of the gain at the preamp level anyways. It helps manage the volume of the amp easier as well as quick change from clean boost to dirty leads.

Gives the fatness my tone needed.

By Art from Chicago on May 16, 2018 Music Background: Guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, song writer

This is a great compact EQ unit that can be used to shape your tone or give it the edge it needs. My original intent was to use it as a booster pedal for my guitar leads, but decided to keep it on all the time and use the MXR Micro amp as a boost instead. It comes with the 18V power adapter which is great because my pedal board's 9V power supply won't work with this unit.

My only complaint is the ridiculously bright LEDs. You can unplug them individually, but I wish they had a dimmer or a single LED to indicate the pedal is on.

Very nice

By Ken Gilman from Albuquerque on February 23, 2018 Music Background: Somewhat professional, Celtic

Primarily an acoustic mandolin family guy, but I have a small set of solid body electrics—mandocaster, tenor mandolin & mandobass. Was never able to get even tone and volume across the 3+ octave spread with the usual 2, 3 or even 5 band eq's. I think this one has done the trick. About 4 - 5 sliders land in the functional shaping range for each instrument and do the trick.

MXR tries to cover all the "basses"...

By Russ House from Illinois on April 19, 2022 Music Background: Bassist, Vinyl Tap Rock Band (facebookDOTcom/VinylTapBand)

I only purchased this because the Whirlwind Bass 10 EQ is not in stock. I chose this one because, of the 10-band EQ's out there, this is the only other one I found that covers the low E string on a bass guitar (which is 40Hz). I don't use the 1K and up sliders because they don't really affect the bass guitar (19th fret on the G string [E note] is about 400 Hz). But I find that it does a fairly good job of shaping my tone with the lower bands. I can definitely tell that what I REALLY want is an EQ that is made for bass guitar, not one that is really more suitable for keyboards or guitars.

I also echo the frequent comments about the blue LED-lit sliders...WAY TOO BRIGHT! I don't intend to keep this EQ, but if I did, there would be black marker on the tips of the sliders. They could be dimmed quite a bit. But I guess that if I was to be playing an outdoor venue during the day I would have no trouble at all seeing the EQ settings.

Operationally, this EQ is nice and smooth. I leave the gain and volume sliders centered, but adding a little gain gives the bass guitar a bit more growl (distortion).

I don't like the 18V power requirement, though. All my other devices on the pedal board are 9V. But I guess the 18V makes the thing work well.

I will say this: I find it works acceptably well for now (which was a pleasant surprise), getting me closer to the warm tone I want, so I will continue to use it until the Whirlwind comes in.

Nice job, MXR.

This is an EQ pedal

By Brandon from Sacramento on November 29, 2021 Music Background: This is where Boomers brag about nothing

Lots of folks here must live fairly mundane lives to be rating this as an unbelievably fantastic pedal without which they could no longer survive and now there's no going back to the before-times. Calm down. All equalizers do the same thing, this is no different. It's not a magic cure-all to every tonal imperfection you've ever encountered. It's just an EQ. The pedal is roughly double the width of a typical pedal. I appreciate the ability to use as a boost or attenuator. I think people forget that 3 stars is average. This is just above average.

Very bright LEDs

Great sound - terrible design

By Steven Gowan from Columbus, GA on November 10, 2021 Music Background: Professional recording, producing, editing, mixing / Video and podcast production

I have absolutely no qualms with the way the pedal sounds. I'm glad to have it, because the EQ works well and it has 2 outputs, allowing me to key the second output into my FX loop noise gate. The freaking, overwhelmingly bright lights render it pretty much useless outside of the studio. I would never put this on my board to play on a dark stage - it will, quite literally, readjust your eyes - when you look away, you'll have 12 dots floating in your vision. Heck, even in the studio it's uncomfortably bright. Who, on earth, designed this thing? lol

If not for the lights, this would be a 5 star review and I'd stand on the rooftops proclaiming its virtue.

Sterile and a little unpleasant

By Sweetwater Customer on February 17, 2020

I had hoped to use this as an always on boost pedal, but it makes my PRS Sweet 16 sound like a very good solid state amp which, of course, it is not. The MXR sounds sterile and a little harsh, and compares unfavorably to my TC Electronic Spark. The MXR is a great looking pedal, quiet, really like the lighted sliders, sorry it didn't make my pedalboard.

Was great then it wasnt

By Donna from New Orleans on April 28, 2018 Music Background: Starving artist

Worked great, then the switch or something got wonky and I had to hit it multiple times before it would kick in without distortion. Well built, otherwise.

Kinda sucks

By Donna on June 26, 2017

After about six months of light usage the switch got wonky. It might turn on, it might not, it might cut the level when it shouldnt, it might send out nothing but distortion, it might not send your signal thru at all. . The box itself is very durable but the switch is the weak link. Very disappointed in this unit
