Fender American Professional II Telecaster Deluxe - Mystic Surf Green with Maple Fingerboard Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Alder Body, Maple Neck, Maple Fingerboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Mystic Surf Green

Fender’s American Professional II Telecaster Deluxe puts a new spin on the hugely popular model, with upgrades aimed at the professional player. The iconic Tele Deluxe styling remains, but it benefits from a contoured neck heel and a redesigned 3-saddle bridge, which makes it easier than ever to get a clean setup with perfect intonation. Tim Shaw V-Mod II Double Tap humbuckers provide the fat sound you would expect from a Tele Deluxe, but they pull the wool off the top end, yielding a stunning hi-fi tone. The American Professional II Telecaster Deluxe also sports a satisfying Deep-C profile neck with Fender’s new “Super-Natural” satin finish. Guitarists at Sweetwater agree this may be the most comfortable Fender neck yet! Classic and contemporary, the Fender American Professional II Telecaster Deluxe is a world-class axe primed to dominate the studio and the stage.

Great guitar!

By Justin from Ohio

Well alls I can say is this guitar sounds and plays amazing!! Neck is fabulous! It did come with deep gouges on the pick guard, wasn't super happy with that, a slight vibration on the 16th fret but all in all an amazing piece!! Comes with nice case all the paperwork of authenticity! I can only give it 4 stars tho since it was damaged when I got it!

Great guitar, but overpriced with bad QC.

By Danny L. from VIRGINIA BEACH, VA
Music Background: 36 year old professional musician.

Note: I have several Fenders and love all of them to varying degrees. This one is no different, great feel and sound. It's also clear however that for a $2k guitar, Fender really needs to up their game when it comes to assembly and quality control. Mine arrived with two blemishes that can be noticed with a 3 min study of the finish. The knobs seem to get worse with every Fender I buy, nearly guaranteeing I have to do some serious knob adjusting after having just bought a brand new guitar. They arrived at varying heights and stiffness, but more critically the tone is wildly inconsistent with the actual knob positions for the tone and volumes.

I'm not bringing it back because for one it's too much of a pain, but secondly I'm confident I can work these kinks out over time. But I maintain that one shouldn't have to "work out kinks" from a two thousand dollar guitar, and I think you may agree.

P.s. Fender for the love of God please stop wrapping your pick guards in plastic making the unboxing of your guitars very annoying rather than elating.

GOAT

By Jim from Upstate New York
Music Background: Professional bedroom player

I'm not a professional player, but have been playing for 25 years and have owned at least 30 guitars. I love this guitar. I have the surf green. It looks beautiful and is flawless. There is nothing bad I can say about this. I love the 70's Strat headstock. I love the maple neck. Feels like it was custom made for my hand. Frets are perfect. Not a sharp edge anywhere. Sound is absolutely fantastic, live these humbuckers.

Problem Solved

By Scott from Waukegan

Since my review above of this guitar I replaced the bridge and saddles with a Glendale raw steel half plate, and Callaham stainless steel compensated saddles. This refocused the tone of the guitar so that I don't need to change the EQ from the settings I use with my standard telecasters. Not only that- it also fixed the tone of the volume jump that happens when going from 9 to 10, making it very usable and intuitive. This is now the guitar I was looking for when I bought it 7 months ago, perfectly intonated, fantastic neck, and lots of different sounds with the 3 way switch and push-pull pots. I was happy that is was so easy to do, the half plate bridge in the guitar has the same dimensions as any other half plate.

Why Does It Do That?

By Scott from Waukegan, Illinois

I love telecasters. And I love working on them. I've put together teles from scratch, tried 20 or so pickup sets from Klein, Fender, Rio Grande, and Seymour Duncan. (And a big shoutout to Glendale, they make the best sounding "Raw Deal" bridge you'll ever hear.) But I wanted something different.

I've owned this guitar for 5 months. I have read all the reviews I can find, and watched all the demo videos.

I agree with nearly everything in all the reviews. I had Sweetwater set it up, even paid for the plecking. It's true, it plays like a dream. I generally like a 7.25" neck radius, but this neck is fantastic. It's the smoothest playing guitar I own.

Yes, it's voiced darker than my other 5 teles, but I can adjust my amp settings to get a great EQ.

But there's one thing that I can't live with. I haven't read a review, or seen a video, that mentions this:
Both volume knobs have a smooth taper, from 0 to 9. Past 9 there is a large volume jump, with a tonal shift to increased mids. The highs and lows are cut. It's really drastic. I can actually hear some other circuitry click in, most noticeably on the neck pup.

Did I just get a lemon? Has anyone else experienced this? Is it supposed to do this? I love to work the volume control but when it jumps into a whole different sound, it's a total buzzkill.

I'd love to hear if anyone else has this happen, and if they see it as a good or bad thing. I'm selling mine soon.

Sweet Ride

By PBZ from Northern VA
Music Background: Gigging Musician

Just got my new Fender Telecaster Deluxe American Pro II. It's a sweet ride for sure and there are very few things to gripe about. This guitar is a "work horse" but also so nicely appointed and good looking classic! I paid a bit extra to have Fender locking tuners installed and had Sweetwater do a "set up" with Elixir 10-46 gauge strings. The guitar arrived perfect, in tune, dialed in, and ready to rock! I own a lot of guitars. My main guitar is a Schecter USA PT - this Tele is every bit as good and better in many ways that warrant having both in my guitar stable! Complaints: The 9.5 radius is fine for me but I wish it were a bit flatter, like the 12-14 radius on my Schecters. I wish there was a bit more resistance in how easy the volume and tone knobs turn, the feel is a bit "cheap" and "loose". Otherwise I have no gripes. The guitar is addictive, its light, stable, stays in tune, sounds fantastic, plays like butter, and looks good too - not much more you can ask for and it really doesnt get much better! Thanks to my salesperson Mark Magdich for making the purchase fun and easy as usual. :)

Fantastic Guitar

By Nate from McAllen, TX
Music Background: blues, rock, church worship

This one caught my eye from the website, and it's just as beautiful in person. The sound is very versatile with the single coil/humbucker option on both neck and bridge pick ups, and I think I'm gonna paint my bedroom Mystic Surf Green. Dang!

One comment - and this has nothing to do with Sweetwater, nor the quality of guitar - but the case has a very strong smell of glue or something, not sure. Still giving 5/5 stars, and the smell will probably fade over time, but it'd be nice if the leather strap I store in the case still smelled like a baseball glove, not adhesive chemicals. All in all, I love Fenders, and still feel like it's the genuine article. Also, you can't go wrong with Mexican or Japanese models, but these American-made take the cake.

Best Guitar I have played in years

By Lance from Calif is on Fire
Music Background: Noise Maker

The saying goes "You get what you pay for" and this Tele Deluxe you get it all, I took this to my luthier for a new setup and almost had to fight him to get it back, because he loved it so much, really solid tone, the neck plays great all the way down to the 22nd fret, the pickup options give you so much different choices in tone than your standard Fender, I don't have a bad thing to say about this guitar, I just love it!

Many Thanks to Ryan at Sweetwater for all the help, too!

Another Great Tele!

By Jeff from New Jersey
Music Background: Retired Live Music Production

Just wanted to pass along my thanks to my Sales Rep Jason and to all of the staff at Sweetwater for delivering another great guitar. Fender seems to have hit their stride recently and my new AP2 Tele Deluxe once again meets all of my expectations. Outstanding looks, craftsmanship and playability right out of the box along with great sound and lots of tonal variety. This is my 5th tele, from MIM to Custom Shop - all with different pickup combos and electronics. And in Mystic Surf Green, this is certainly one of the most attractive. There is something very real about how a guitar sitting in a stand can call over to you to play every time you pass it. Thanks Jason and thanks to Sweetwater. Much appreciation for maintaining such high service standards in such challenging times. - Jeff
