Ibanez TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer Overdrive Pedal Reviews
There is no single stomp box more famous than the Ibanez Tube Screamer. The Edge from U2 uses a TS9 for most of his overdrive tones, as do countless other famous rock and blues players. Thanks to tubelike distortion, smooth sustain, and fat tone, the Tube Screamer has been and continues to be the world's most popular solid-state overdrive. So much so that after production of the TS9 ended in 1984, used TS9s were going for as much as 4 times their original price at vintage shows a few years later.

Great sound
Got this for my brother. He can't get enough of it. Still looking for his favorite sound but it makes a big difference.
Tube screamer
Exelant pedal. Sounds great.
There's a reason it's a standard.
Like I said, you see these things everywhere for a reason. Had the TS9 for years and loved it. Using the TS9DX Turbo now and it definitely gives a little extra kick. At the end of the day, I challenge you to find a better overdrive pedal for this price range. Imo a must have.
Love it
Sticking with the traditional ts9 setting. The others add low end which act more as a fuzz face, nice option if you need it
King of the Overdrives!
I've tried a lot of overdrive pedals. The TS9 has always been my favorite for any smooth rock and blues tones. It has that clean transparency without any extra color, grit or fuzz that makes your vintage sound come alive and adds sustain. My only complaint was there was no option to push it a little hotter when I needed that extra kick without going to a hi-gain metal pedal. That's where this TS9 DX comes in. You get the original TS9 with options to fill the gap between a transparent push and hard rock tone. It's built like a tank and nicely built in Japan which was a nice surprise. You cannot go wrong with this!
Love it!
I didn't know if I could use a dc supply for it, coz it says Ac on the pedal but the instructions say "ac (only use dc tip negative) so I use the battery.
It's just an awesome pedal.
My origin 50 loves it
Classic for a reason
I'm sure you know what a tube Screamer is. I had gone the route of buying budget alternatives. They were fine for awhile but the clarity and build quality of the real thing is awesome. I don't think I can go back to budget versions now. The different voicings are pretty cool although even just the ts9 setting is just a fantastic clean boost. Thanks to Nick for his help.
Great
Best sound I've ever had matched with a marshell amp
Recommend both Sweetwater & the Screamer
I got this for my husband as a gift. He loves it, he said it's just what he expected since he had done some research and watched videos while looking for his new future pedal.
He says it has good tone. It's versitile and he likes the way it sounds. He has another pedal from MXR that gives different effects, not really comparable.
Ordering from Sweetwater was a great experience. The package came super fast and the pedal was well protected in the box. Highly recommend.
Best overdrive I've tried
I've tried a number of different overdrive pedals in last year and ended up going with this one. I'm using it mainly on clean channel for a mild overdrive tone. I chose the "+" setting on this one which adds bass that was lacking (in my opinion) on regular TS-9. Incredible warmth and touch sensitivity - partly because it blends some of the original clean signal with the overdrive. Highly recommend!
Really Good Buy
So a few years ago, I had about $200 to spend on pedals and I had no idea what I was doing when it came to pedals. I heard that the tube screamer was good so I got this pedal and a cheap Chinese delay pedal. The delay pedal already broke but this thing is amazing. In the past couple years, I now know a lot more about pedals and this one shines above the rest. It made a solid state practice amp bearable and a tube amp shine. My Favorite setting is Turbo with a low level just to give your signal that extra edge. I've had people with regular TS9's tell me that this is way better than the TS9 and I definitely agree. It's built like a tank and if you take care of it, it will literally last forever. As always, Sweetwater's service is exceptional - shout out to Randy.
Exactly what u expect....and more
Very usable overdrive from just a little signal boost all the way to crispy crunch. Plays well with others as well. Front of the line or last on the chain. It colors tone but doesn't overwhelm the natural sound of the signal. The level control is especially responsive. It does darken up a little with humbuckers as they seem to be less receptive to the tone control but not so much as to blow out Eq. Perfect for single coils. If u are reading this then u most likely already know what's up with the 808 but to my ears the TS9 has just as much character with some added kick.
Love it
Well worth the extra money for a regular TS9. So adjustable you can't help finding the sound you're looking for.
Worth every penny!
This is one of the most incredible overdrive, for not only you have
the same electronics of a regular Ts9 tube screamer, this pedal gives you options
of three more, a plus overdrive, A hot overdrive and the unique Turbo overdrive.
You can get a variety of sounds with different combinations with the drive, tone
and level controls. An interesting piece of gear for different needs of the music
that I play. It's built well and very sturdy. I will recommend this pedal if you are
looking for a regular Ts9... pay the extra $10 and get the Ts9dx....It will be
well worth it the investment.
Tube Screamer with some added versatility.
If you like TS style overdrive but want some more voicing options without adding more pedals to your board, this is a solid choice.
If your wondering, Yes it chugs, really good in my opinion too
This pedal is a beast, Ibanez has always made great stuff that's a bang for a buck, this is no exception… the ts9 with the drive at 0, Tone around 3 o,clock and volume at max, is absolutely gnarly with a mesa dual rectifier, the other voicings… especially "Turbo" mode… are gained out with all the eq boosts as well. Absolutely incredible, better then the ts9!
5 star sound...3 star design
Great pedal for sound...which is what of course really counts. Poor power supply design. 9v battery drains dead if left in even with pedal off and no cables attached. Will have to drill hole, put in miniswitch on battery lead. Will use 9v dc wall adaptor as well. Otherwis wud have been a 5 star pedal
Crafty dynamic!
I've never had experience with the original, but this one is very dynamic and has the potential to craft alot of different tones. I'm pretty happy with it!
Ibanez TS9DX
A pedal I should have bought years ago. I always saw pro guys using this pedal. I always relied on a Mesa Boogie amp for tone. But this pedal works for all types of genres. Rock, Blues, Country!
Good sound, circuit board prone to breakage
I really like the sound of this pedal. I have had it for about a year or so. However, one day recently it just didn't turn on. Took off the back cover and found the circuit board was broken at the single screw attachment - see pics. Besides the screw at the upper LH corner of the board, the left and right edges of the board sit on some flat bosses, and the back cover compresses a foam-backed plastic sheet against the board, which helps hold it down against these bosses. Unfortunately this design doesn't seem to be sufficient to prevent the board from breaking at the only secured attachment, which is the screw.
I suspect this happened from the pedal getting hit or dropped or something. However, you have to expect this to happen to pedals in a performance environment, and a more robust attachment - for example, one screw at each of the 4 corners - would be a simple way to prevent this from causing board breakage. Of course this means at the very least the cost of new tooling for the outer case, some changes to the circuit board footprint and 3 more screws, and possibly some cost reduction if the foam-covered plastic sheet could be eliminated. So I don't really see Ibanez springing for that. But I wish this had been considered up front.
You can see from the closeup pic that the capacitor lead is sheared off at the solder joint. However, I super-glued the board back together and reattached with a washer under the screw head and it seems to be working, for now.
Don't buy this
