Perfect Bass
For me this bass is absolutely perfect. Personally, everything I wanted and I liked in my equipment.
Amazing bass
What an amazing bass! I want to add a 5 strings to my colection, but I didn't want to spend lot of money because I enjoy more the 4 strings. I tryied a lot of good basses, including the Yamaha Trbx505 witch is the next model to this one. This is by far the best 5 strings under $600. My main basses are a Fender Geddy Lee signature and a Warwick Corvette and this Yamaha TRBX305 easily kills both in sound, versatility, balance, playability and the price is half of the others. I change the strings for LaBella 40-118 and I got a nice low action without buzz. Yamaha really take care or the details. A+ bass.
Worth it
As a lifelong guitarist, I bought this bass for writing and recording demo material with. I honestly don't know if I could have expected any nicer of an instrument for what I was after. I've had it for several months now and I can say that the 305 is a solid instrument, you can tell before you plug it in. It plays effortlessly, stays in tune, and a the EQ circuit makes finding the tone in your head a lot quicker, especially for a novice bassist like myself. Fit and finish are top notch, too.
Also: Buy it here. Seriously, the inspection is worth it - even if they don't immediately have it in stock. I just bought a completely unrelated guitar (for $1k more!!!) from a competitor and I didn't even bother plugging it in because it had so many cosmetic defects right out of the box. Your patience will be rewarded.
A home run by Yamaha!
Wow, what a sweet bass! Feels great in the hand, looks great, sounds beautiful. I have several Fenders and love them, and I almost bought a 5-string P, but I'm happy I chose this one. The tone is deep and powerful with a sweet top end. The EQ presets are very useful for quick adjustments and the preamp is quiet. Bass and treble control frequency centers are just right. In fact, the preamp sounds as good as, and is less noisy than, my Sadowsky outboard. Don't let the low price fool you, Yamaha really hit it out of the park with this one!

I honestly was not sure about getting the 305 instead of the 505 with slightly better pick ups but after using it last week when I received it it REALLY didn't matter. This bass is awesome!!!!! The 5-way switch had me!!! LOl this bass plays fantastic,sounds fantastic and for 400 bucks I'll put it up against ANY "boutique" basses !!! just remember friends,it's ALL in the amp and player!!!! LOL btw i'm running an SVT0410HLF and a Hartke-LH100 !! sweetwater ROCKS!!!!!!!! p.S. thanks Nick!!!!!
One amazing bass!
I haven't been able to put this bass down since I brought it home! Excellent quality, sound and ease of play. Very versatile, far more than I was expecting for a bass of this price. I reviewed many basses before purchasing this one at the Sweetwater store. Yamaha has always been great guitars and they still are.
I also purchased a Hartke A35 amp at the same time for practice. The combination sounds as good as the Zon Sonus 519 through a Trace-Elliot 210 amp I played a couple of years ago! You won't go wrong with this bass!

YAMAHA TRBX305
I received this bass a few days ago, and was surprised for a bass at that price. Seems to be constructed very well, not the prettiest bass I own but nice. I bought this bass because I wanted a 5 string I could use at church. Also if I wanted I could just leave it there and not worry about it, and some of the younger bass players could use it. I also found as an older man in his 60s the wider neck was easier on my hands. I like the EQ better on this bass then the TRBX505 for just one reason. The church I go to we play very contemporary worship, then may throw in a couple of older hymns. So the little selector switch which has slap, pick, flat,finger, and solo is like an auto EQ. So it's a fast way to change your sound quick when needed. If you have ever played worship in church you go from one song to another sometimes without a lot of time, and in my church the song leader might just throw in something your not expecting. Would Victor Wooten play it why would he, if you got the money buy his bass. But for $399.99 its a decent bass, good work horse it looks like. I got a $1500.00 Fender J bass sitting right beside guess what they both make great music, if you practice and hang in there. I wouldn't be a shame to gig with it anywhere. And again Sweetwater music and its staff are awesome as always. I don't even go to that one place you know the initials a G.C.. Most of the time they just tell me they can order it, well so can I from Sweetwater and get what I want at a good price. And its at my door 3 or 4 days. Sweetwater your awesome. AND I DON'T HAVE TO HEAR SMOKE ON THE WATER BE PLAYED OVER AND OVER.
Pleasantly surprised.
I never give anything 5 stars, and was going to give this bass 3, until I thought about the price. I don't really think you can beat this bass for the price. I wish it had a better B string presence, but I can't expect it to sound as good as my high end basses. I'm very pleased with this bass, and will be gigging with it, when I play somewhere that I don't want to take my expensive bass, AND will have a great time playing it. Matt Fawcett is great to deal with! I think he needs a raise, lol! In all seriousness, Sweetwater is the only place I buy from. It's great to have a company like Sweetwater to back my music needs.
Not good luck with this cass
I received this bass and thought it would be great,, but it had a problem with its preamp. it was 5 times louder than any other bass with a pre that I owned it distorted the output. I replaced batteries same result. I returned it. The team at Sweetwater was great and really helped me with my issue. Unfortunately I dont have time to get another one of these with the same preamp problem, so I went with a different bass. "Really disappointing". I expected more from Yamaha. I hope its was just the bass i got and not a overall design problem. when you see the demo video is sounds awesome and to its credit it has a wide verity of sound choices, just the one i got was in overdrive and distorted badly , To Bad because it has a lifetime warranty :-( However having said that it looks and feels great to play.
