must have

By Sam C. from Springfield, OH

Our church purchased this soundboard several years ago, and wow, what a difference in sound it has made in our sanctuary with the new soundboard. It's easy to use and operate during the service and with my laptop I'm able to run the soundboard from anywhere in the sanctuary with the software that I installed on it. I don't have to worry about someone messing with it because I can go to the scene I created for worship on Sunday and it would go right back to the saved settings on it. I would highly recommend anyone who is looking for an easy digital soundboard to run by the TF soundboard.

Good Mixer and Pretty Good Beginner Console

By Elliott B. from BLOOMINGTON, IN
Music Background: Bluecoats Audio Team and Audio and Sound Designer for multiple high school groups in Indiana

Overall, not a bad mixer. It is pretty good for marching band and indoor percussion, especially for directors who don't know much about the operation of mixers. Definitely a good "starter" console for small to medium marching bands. If you want a user friendly mixer, I like to think as the TF series to be rather user friendly compared to most other digital consoles. However, it is definitely limited. It doesn't allow for delay directly on the XLR inputs which is a big thing for me and you can easily snap the faders if you are not careful and drop something on it. Overall, it has its perks but once you become big enough, it definitely begins to hinder you.

Definitely not for my needs

By Chris C. from New Berlin, WI
Music Background: Sound for church and live theater

I do sound for live theater, and I'm currently using a TF5 for a show I'm working. Like many shows I do, this show has a number of people sharing microphones. On any other board I've used, I've been able to plug a microphone into a single input, then route that microphone to multiple channels so that I could have separate EQ settings for each user. Not on this board. This board is one-to-one. Input 1 can only go to channel 1. You can also set channel 1 to a single channel on the Dante box, but again, it's only one to one. That's a huge drawback. Also, there's only one reverb and one delay setting built in. This show has a live band, and the instruments all have reverb/delay set. I would typically also add some reverb/delay for my vocalists when they're singing, but the only quick way to shut that off for dialogue would be to turn the FX off for the entire board - thus removing it from my instruments. When I first found out I was going to use this board I started researching. A lot of what I saw said "if you know nothing about sound, this is a really great board, but if you know anything about sound, you're going to hate it." I can see how this MIGHT be good in a small church, but even the FX would be an issue in my church. I will say the sound quality is pretty good coming through this thing, but in all honesty, it's barely a step up from an analog board.

Awful

By David S.
Music Background: 43 years as a live and studio sound engineer.

Probably the worst digital mixer I've ever heard. Horrible sound and stupid design.
I have nothing good to say about it. Even at its comparatively low price point it's still a total waste of money.

By Sam C. from Springfield, OH

My church purchased the TF5 sound board for our sanctuary and ot has been amazing its easy to use I'm able to run it from my laptop on the stage while playing drums. We love it it's a simple digital Sound Board. If anyone is looking for a simple digital Sound Board I would recommend buying the Yamaha TF series board it will change your sound for the better.

Overpriced and hides limited capabilities behind a good name

By Rob M. from Philadelphia

Yamaha is a great brand and TF is a terrible console. It is designed to be easy to use for newcomers (which it is) and the praise stops their. Their board is costs the same or more than far more capable boards. Once novice users get past day one the limitations will begin to show. No graphic EQs on all groups. Only half the groups can be assigned to the mains. The master bus can't even take advantage of the full 31 band EQ - there's a software limitation locking you down to only 15 bands of adjustment. No gates, compressors, or four band eq on the last chunk of inputs. Do yourself a favor and buy an X32, or QU, or Wing, or SI impact. All those boards have huge issues but are still more capable than this overpriced garbage. As an integrator I cannot even properly commission one of these consoles.

Great for Bands

By Brett B. from Cortland, NY

We are using this for our 5 piece rock band. Our stage show uses 29 channels so we can side stage it or run it Dante with the Tios. Relatively easy to train our road crew to keep a good mix throughout the show. Having Dante on a board at this cost is great. Sound quality is top notch. Native iOS usb support is great. Ipad app is strong.

A Little Limiting and Not Mechanically Robust

By Louis from Orlando, FL
Music Background: Studio & Live Audio Engineer

We use this console at our church and in the past two years, we've had several sticky faders and noticed that the motorized faders aren't very high-resolution. Changing layers moves the previous fader settings ever so slightly. Some channels ignore scene changes as well.

When it comes to feeling limited, that's more in the FX department. There is not enough flexibility and the reverbs don't sound very complex nor rich. I was surprised there isn't an onboard de-esser or the ability to connect to a Waves Soundgrid system.

All-in-all, 3/5 stars. It is not a bad board for small churches with volunteers using the console, but it would not be my first pick.

TF-5 in a large Catholic Church

By William B. from Burbank, CA
Music Background: Synergetic Audio Concepts grad

After much internal discussion and technical advice from Sweetwater, my church just bought a TF-5 from Sweetwater to be used in a very large Catholic church in SoCal. First use target date was Palm Sunday. We only had two days to unbox it, figure it out, update the firmwear to 4.0, and set it up in the church for a dry run before Palm Sunday. Once we figured it out, it ran flawlessly. We learned right away that the TF Reference Manual is very poorly written and organized. Yamaha probably knows this because the Yamaha video training (TF Quick Tips Videos, and Youtube TF Series Tutorials) is very good. Go there first. That training will then give you enough background to use the Manual to figure out specific arcane tasks.

We already had six Yamaha DSR115 powered speakers installed on the inside walls of the church. We connected the TF-5 to the speakers through a drive rack with delays set as required. We heard very good comments from the pastoral team and congregation.

One week later, on Easter, we had a praise band (acoustic guitar, stereo keys, and bass, all direct), small acoustic drum set (SM-58 kick and SM-81 overhead), 14 individially mic'd singers (SM-58's), a string quartet (SM-57's), and flute (SM-58). That's 21 open mics and total of 25 channels at the same time. We ran 9 separate mono monitor mixes into 9 powered JBL and Yamaha wedges, using Aux 1 though Aux 8, and Aux 9's Omni Output as a mono aux output by panning its sources hard left in the aux 9/10 stereo mix. All the singers/musicians could hear themselves very well. The TF-5 ran perfectly. We used the same setup for all Easter masses.

The pastoral team and congregation went absolutely nuts (in a good way). After each mass we heard the comment 'concert quality sound' over and over.

We used the StageMix iPad app through a Linksys AC1900 router to mix from the pews. 2.4GHz gave us the range and performance we needed even from the rear of the church which is 120 feet from the front altar where the band, singers, and router are located.

Bottom line is the TF-5 is an excellent mixer for us, especially at Sweetwater's price. Once we climbed the learning curve, it is actually easier to use than the old Mackie Onyx 1640 it replaced. The next goal is to record all 32 channels live to a MacBook Pro running Logic Pro through the 'USB to Host' output on the back of the TF-5.

Software Issues

By Michael C. from N.W. Indiana
Music Background: Praise Band director

There are many good features about this unit, but my main complaint is about the software. You are supposed to be able to store "programs" or a configuration of a band lay-out. It seems the software has a mind of its own in that when you "recall" a program, it is modified or it will be scrambled. Also - Be careful not to inadverently erase a configuration! I have had all these things happen. It took me several attempts to "store" a configuation before it would finally recall in the format I set it up.
If you "store" a configuration, select another program before you shut down the machine. Select a program that you won't care if it is deleted or altered; That is - don't leave the configuration you want to keep as the "default" configuration when powering up the unit. It can easily get erased.

Awesome mixer for church

By Joshua W. from Moorefield, West Virginia
Music Background: Music director at New Life Tabernacle Church

This is an awesome mixer that allows for easy use and understanding for church settings. Really enjoy running this board. It should be worth about 5 times the price tag. Couldn"t have asked for better customer service with Paul Eckert who cares and was very willing to help and had an awesome and easy install with Ron Sims who really puts his clients first and does an awesome, professional job. All of these factors have changed our services dynamically.

It is limited...

By Kenneth C.
Music Background: Church sound engineer

After 3 months of having this mixer, I can say that it has software limitations that are quite annoying and do not tell you in the specifications. The equalizers are limited to 12 bands, which is very annoying and forces you to install an external equalizer, at least in the case of the PA where the control is extremely important.
If I had to choose again, I would look for another option that would not limit me.
For the rest, the sound quality is good and the benefits of the digital system are excellent, but it always hurts to see that you missed something.

Intro To Digital

By Sweetwater Customer

Perfect first step into digital mixing with plenty of room to grow. I was initially going to go with a Yamaha QL series board, but began to research the TF. Not only was a MUCH better price, it was going to be a lot easier to train my volunteers on. That said, there is still plenty of horsepower. Very intuitive with multiple ways to accomplish almost any task you want to complete. The digital stage bases are also a great deal and product.

15 dÃ

By Kenneth C.

Missing a lot of key features

By BennyGreen from Canada
Music Background: Live sound engineer

The TF5 would be an OK board in some situations but I have not enjoyed using it yet. There are no matrices so any delays or fills have to be run from post fade unity send auxs. No easy way to delay outputs; you have to use a stereo aux and insert a delay effect as you can't insert effects on mono auxs. No internal routing of auxs to LR; if you want to group channels to a graphic you have to patch the output back to an input with a physical cable. Flipping graphic to faders takes every fader so you can't push your channel fader up more. The RTA seems very insensitive, I didn't even realize there was an RTA until hours into using it. Touch screen isn't great, and lack of physical pots. I like the custom fader bank. Buy an M32 instead

New to Digital Mixers

By Cary L. from Huntsville, Al
Music Background: Worship Leader

Suggested a Digital Mixer for a Church I was a worship leader at. Worked with Paul at Sweetwater and he recommended the Yamaha TF5. I have never set up a digital mixer. Downloaded the TF Editor software on my Mac. I had the complete mixer set up before I even unboxed the mixer. Sync'd my Mac to the board and instantly the board was configured, named, etc...There are some great videos on You Tube to help you navigate this board. We got tired of people coming in and screwing with them mixer. Now we can press one button and the mixer goes back to our pre configured settings. Thank you Sweetwater for all your help.

Very bad console

By Sweetwater Customer

The only thing is good thats sound quality, but software is very bad, freezes randomly on the middle of show, sometimes is very slow responding, i press the button and wait 5 seconds until it select it, if you record live using on-board recording, dont expect it to start recording right away after you press the start button, it will think about 3-5 seconds before it will actualy start recording, also usb cannot be used as insert for plugins running on computer. I wasted money when i bought it.

Great sound from a user friendly board

By Ron from Washington
Music Background: Church sound engineer

Its not often enough that something affordable does what it says in the description then goes and performs perfectly to what has been described. I have used other digital boards in this price range and found them lacking the tone and ease of use. I have to hand it to Yamaha they put out an easy to use great priced board.

Review Yamaha TF5 - 32 Channel

By Joel H. from Sedro Woolley WA
Music Background: Guitar man (bass, electric and acoustical)

we absolutely love our new mixer! The main reason is that it is so user friendly! Its amazing what you can do with this thing! Being one of the guitarists in the band, my favorite feature is the ability to adjust my own monitor mix from my iphone or ipad. Yamaha did a wonderful job with this mixer. And of course Sweetwater lived up to their excellent customer service reputation. Thanks for all your help Jason!
We will be purchasing more equipment from Sweetwater!
