Bridge a Thunderbolt 3 PC to Firewire Audio Interface

By jdh from WAKE FOREST, NC

Just upgraded to an Alienware laptop PC with Thunderbolt 3 and wanted to use my Motu 828mkii firewire audio interface so I am happy to report it works as it should using the Startech adapter in conjunction with Apple's Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter. There is a Firewire 800 to 400 cable adapter as well. And yes it all works glitch-free!

Given the number of Firewire devices manufactured which produce reasonable quality results in the A/V realm, it's just plain *dumb* that it requires stringing together a Frankenstein of cables to support them, but at least this works and I don't have to continue using an older laptop, nor was it necessary to "upgrade" my audio interface and spend close to a grand (again) just to get the same number of line in/out and preamps.

Doing a google search on this topic, the Startech adapter is recommended by Presonus as they found Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to 2/1 adapter does not work correctly on PC.

Great Computer!

By Gary from United States

Without doubt, anyone looking for a studio computer should take a serious look at Sweetwater"s CS450. After years of dealing with the quirky moods and breakdowns of the other platform, I decided to go with a PC this time.
After researcing quite a few systems, I found that Sweetwater"s CS450 computer would be the best choice for me. The unit came with everything I wanted, a Thunderbolt 3 motherboard, 32 gigs of ram, expandability, along with many other features perfect for my needs.
As advertised, the CS450 was set up at Sweetwater and ready to go when I flipped on the power. After installing Presonus Studio 4 and plugging in a Thunderbolt I/O and other peripherals, I was ready to go…it was amazingly easy and headache free.
I"m really happy with my decision to go with the CS450 and I would certainly encourage anyone else looking for a great system to take a close look at the CS450. How can you beat a free two year warranty and free support?
I would also point out that Sweetwater associates Aaron and Jed provided straight answers to all of my questions. If they didn"t have an immediate answer, they would quickly find one and get back to me. Great service!

Apple Hardware on PC!

By Bartrinsic

OK this is an expensive converter. But UA has achieved an significant engineering feat at the forward edge of what is possible, while many other audio companies are waiting for it to be easier. If like me you have a PC that is a few years old but supports a Thunderbolt 3 upgrade card (e.g. ASUS Z170), the integration may be a bit tricky, but I had it working within two hours. On such retrofits some software may not be happy with the combination of Thunderbolt and ASIO drivers (e.g. MIDI players/Guitar Pro), but once I found what worked it worked great (e.g. try routing PC playback through JRiver or ASIO4ALL). Using a newer laptop with native Thunderbolt 3, I've had no problems at all.

Functions as should

By Sweetwater Customer

This adapter was needed to connect my Apollo 8P to my PC that has Thunderbolt 3 usb-c port. I also needed a Thunderbolt 2 cable to go from this adapter to the Apollo. These two items were $ extra just to be able to use the Apollo. Seems a little overpriced just for one adapter and one cable. Sure wish these were included with the Apollo.
