The Synthesizer Box is the heart of the Pittsburgh Modular System 10, containing a Waveforms Oscillator, Lopass Gate, LFO, Envelope Generator, and VCA. Each of these components is fully patchable and can function independently of the others, giving you the power of five standalone modules. The Waveforms Oscillator is the core of the Synthesizer Box, delivering voltage-controlled waveform morphing, massive modulation mojo, and a sub oscillator for rich timbres and weapons-grade bottom end.

The Pittsburgh Modular System 10 has one multi-wave oscillator. The Saw is the oscillator's core wave - which is great, because saws are the lifeblood of analog synthesis. The Blade, a Pittsburgh Modular exclusive, is a complex saw wave you can modulate using the MOD CV input (which has no effect on the Saw). You can further manipulate the Blade using the Blade In jack. The Sub Oscillator is a square wave pitched one octave below the main oscillator, and it generates massive low end. A switch gives you control between Low Volume, Off, and Full Volume settings. All in, this arrangement wields firepower equivalent to many synths that employ two, or even three oscillators.

The System 10's Lopass Gate is a unique module that includes both a lowpass filter and VCA. The LPG is an agressive-sounding filter with retooled resonance circuitry for extra bite. It uses a highly tuned set of resistive opto-isolators to produce everything from natural-sounding filter sweeps and searing, res'd-out leads to organic percussion. It's also surprisingly effective at simulating the characteristics of acoustic instruments. In LPG mode, additional harmonics are added to louder sounds while quieter sounds pass through unmodified. This characteristic behavior imparts a rich, organic quality to your patches.

The System 10 sports Frequency Modulation that lets you modulate the pitch of the oscillator and switch the attenuated FM input between exponential and linear response. The FM input is internally patched to the LFO triangle output, but the routing is bypassed when you patch into the FM CV In jack. You control the amount of waveform modulation applied to the square and blade waves via the MOD CV input dial. Each wave type reacts differently, with pulse-width modulation of the square wave and wave-shape morphing of the blade wave. The MOD CV input is normaled to the LFO triangle output, however, the you can bypass the internal routing by patching into the MOD CV IN input jack. The System 10 also has a wide-range LFO that's ideal for long sweeps or audio-rate frequency modulation, as well as a four-stage (ADSR) envelope - both with Triangle and Square wave patch points.
