Elektron Syntakt 12-voice Drum Computer and Synthesizer Reviews

12-voice Drum Machine, Synthesizer, Sequencer, and Groove Machine, with 4 Analog Voices, 8 Digital Voices, 12 MIDI Tracks, and 64-step Sequencer

Swedish powerhouse Elektron has returned with a Syntakt, a new iteration on their groundbreaking line of drum computers, and the production pros here at Sweetwater couldn’t be more eager to get their hands on it. Though it is a drum specialist, first and foremost, Syntakt's compositional capabilities far exceed simply being a rhythm engine. Analog sounds intermix with digital FM synthesis to produce a prismatic aural texture worthy of its techno-punk aesthetic. The beauty isn’t just skin deep, however, as an assortment of distortions, filters, FX, parameter locks, and trig modifiers harmonize across upward of 64 sequenced steps. Synthesize the future through the past and hear what this music mega box is all about.

Best groove box I have ever owned

By Sweetwater Customer

What an amazing groove box. The step sequencer is a game changer. The work flow is so intuitive compared to the Akai and Roland machines.

Bottom line… this is a drum machine that will change your music for the better.

Syntakt - A Compact Sound Design Powerhouse

By Robert O. from Mahomet, IL

I don't usually write reviews, but I'm so digging this little box that I felt compelled to share. The Syntakt is a seriously cool groovebox that's way more versatile than its size suggests. It's got this awesome combo of digital and analog sounds, and they all sound fantastic. Seriously, from punchy drums to weird spacey pads, this thing can fill a large sonic stage.

What impresses me is how much you can tweak the sounds. Definitely belongs in a sound designer's toolbox! And Elektron's sequencer & workflow is fun to use. I've been coming up with crazy beats and melodies that I never would have thought of otherwise.

Honestly, the Syntakt has become my main synth for gigs. It's small enough to throw in my backpack, but it sounds huge. My Digitone is collecting dust for now... sorry, buddy.

My only minor gripe is that the button combo for switching mute modes is different from my Digitakt 2. It's a small thing, but it messes with my muscle memory when I'm switching between the two.

But honestly, that's a nitpick. Overall, the Syntakt is an amazing little machine. If you're looking for a synth that's fun, inspiring, and sounds incredible, definitely check it out. You won't be disappointed.

My Sweetwater sales rep, Alan Moon, is always quick to help me out, fun to talk to and really knows a lot about pro audio!

Overall, it's been a good experience so far with the Syntakt!

Nothing like it

By Kevin D. from Chicago
Music Background: Hip Hop / EDM

I've own the Syntakt and Roland 707,TR8S for a few years now. I love all my gear. That said: The Syntakt is a Totally different Monster. I mean ,yes. It is NOT a sampler. And??!! So , what! You can create ALL TYPES of sounds within the sound browser or sound packs and chop them like a VINYL sample. It's CRAZY FRFR. The Sequencer is PERFECT IMO. You can edit or Copy Paste everything!! It's Crazy. I usually pair my Syntakt with a SP404MK2 for Vocal sample intro's for that extra sweetness. I have 110 Projects and NANN one questionable. They all BANG!! If things go right. I'm gonna buy a Digitakt 2 to pair permanently with my Syntakt and just segregate Roland with Roland. I would sell everything for a Digitakt and Digitone. FRFR. LOVE MY SYNTAKT.

Great!

By Cesar V.
Music Background: amateur guitar, COVID-19 GAS, just like to make sounds.

Highly recommend it, I'll start the sequence and get lost just turning the knobs and seeing all the little changes taking place and morphing the sound. Thick, full, immersive sound you can make on this box. Be sure to spend some time to get to know the workflow but once you get it is very fluid. As many already mentioned I'm still learning and discovering all the sounds you can get out of this box, all the machines can sound so different, don't let the name of the machine trick you, you can get glass bells out of one of the snares or kick drums! It's the most fun I've had 'learning' my way into it, more like playing and discovering. I think I've become an Elektron fan! :D

I adore my new Elektron Syntakt

By Sweetwater Customer

I own all the Digi collection. This Elektron groovebox is extremely addictive and the best complement to the Digitakt. The concept of machines dedicated to different types of sounds is great. I wish they add more in future updates. For the price I would expect more additional effects to its fx block. I'm running the Digitone into the Syntakt because sidechain and drive sounds great with fm synthesis. My live set is now compact and complete. Using the H90 efx pedal is the icing on the cake to my dawless setup.

Great creative tool

By Sweetwater Customer

I've had a lot of fun with this. The workflow is real fluid once you get acclimated and the sound shaping is quick, useful and has more variety to it than you would think coming from the set of "machines" as opposed to raw, from scratch sounds.

Overall I feel like I can get ideas down quickly and gain inspiration from the flexible sequencing. As a previous owner of the model cycles I can say I'm not someone who thinks it's just a "beefed up" version of that. This feels like it's own thing and a much more flexible tool (though the cycles is a lot of fun and great for a particular feel.)

The Groovebox I've been searching for

By Sweetwater Customer

The Syntakt's focus on using Machines for the various sounds it can make gives just the right amount of constraints to make it easier to learn than the Digitone (for me at least). While there are ample presets available, being able to pick a machine and get something usable from scratch is much easier than I've found with other grooveboxes. While I love the Digitakt, the fact that this device can make all the sounds all on its own with no other prep/devices involved is extremely appealing. I don't plan to get rid of my other Digi boxes but for when I just want a simple setup to make music with this checks all the boxes for me.

Elektron Strikes Again!

By Francis R. from Holbrook, NY

I have a digitakt, and the interface is pretty much identical. It's easy to sequence beats with the initial patches, workflow isn't too hard to make something efficient, and it is extremely fun to make your own sounds (almost exactly what this machine is for!) Loads of preset sounds to experiment with, and the preset beats are all reverse engineer-able to get ideas or inspiration from. It's can be standalone, but can't wait to integrate it with my other gear for trigger happy goodness.

Elektron addict here, great product.

By CroatoanMusic from Nevada
Music Background: 22 years playing guitar/bass, 30 years on piano

So I may be a bit biased, as I have loved every Elektron product I've ever purchased, but the Syntakt is wildly fun. I had the Cycles (was my first Elektron device), and this is similar in some ways, but so much more expansive than the Cycles, and it definitely does a lot more things than the Cycles can do. Now, with song mode, you can do SO much with it... I also have a Digitone and Digitakt, and having all 3 is just so much fun, and has opened up my writing a lot. I use the Syntakt via Overbridge these days (used to have the Digitone into it, and it into the Digitakt all via audio), and have had 0 issues with Overbridge. While I like using the plug-ins in DAW, there's something about doing everything on the devices that is just more tactile and enjoyable. If you're on the fence, I saw jump off and get a Syntakt!

I'm In Love :3

By Nick T. from pisgah forest, NC
Music Background: Musician

After a year of owning and adoring my Elektron Cycles [which I still love and use], this is exactly the next step I was looking for. This thing is amazing. Incredibly intuitive, the color coding rocks. Wildly flexible. I feel like I can make nearly any sound with this. Jamming on the presets and tweaking them to be your own is such a fun way to learn the machine. Mute mode is perfect, as are the separate retrigger / mod buttons.

Coming up with original patterns is super fast and fun. I haven't had this much fun away from my DAW in a hot minute. Did I mention the buttons FEEL good? Like... very satisfying to push and touch. Nicely weighted too. She gets just the right amount of warm. 11/10 would recommend.

She's special. Love her. Treat her well.

The Elektron Syntakt is a magic music box!

By Dave
Music Background: Professional musician, Keyboards, synths, guitars, bass, and drums.

The Syntakt is like my Model:Cycles X 100.
Same basic work flow, with lots of extras and improvements, to make things easier and more flexible.
Incredible new sound options, great ergonomics, and build quality.
I could not be happier with my purchase, and am having a blast creating new music with it.
If you like groove boxes, and can afford it, I highly recommend getting it.
Also mention that I had a good purchase experience with Sweetwater, and their telephone support, when I had some questions.

One Month Review

By J. B. from Indiana
Music Background: I have never used Elektron gear before and have about 3 years of experience in electronic gear … prior to that I focused just on guitar.

I had been on the fence with the Digitakt for several years but wasn't yet ready to dive into sampling. I'd seen enough videos that I was semi-familiar with Electrons' workflow. So, when the Syntakt was announced … basically the Digitakt with digital and analog synths (something I was familiar with) I rolled the dice and got an early pre-order in.

The build quality is excellent. The sound quality is excellent. The screen is easy to read from all angles (top notch) for someone with moderate vision in all light (I have not taken outdoors). It gets a little warm due to analog synth components, but not hot to touch. The instruction manual (digital expanded one) is very well done and there is a good wealth of instructional tutorials available … Elektron got these out early to reviewers. I would suggest working along with a tutorial to get accustomed. 12 tracks seems like more than enough, I often have to trim sound out of the mix. Each track can be set to a MIDI channel and the encoders can be set to control parameters of your other gear.

One other bonus is that you can route audio thru the Syntakt and add Reverb and Delay … my Synthstrom Deluge doesn't have the best reverb and delay and the Syntakt solves that problem. Once you understand the basic of the Elektron workflow and button layout, everything gels quickly. I'm a rocker and don't know EDM, but even I have some killer beats going on. The sound design is top notch. The abundant preset sounds can be molded to your heart's desire. (double bonus … Overbridge makes the Syntakt an excellent Audio Interface for incoming audio)

Another great Elektron device

By Keith R. from Medaryville Indiana

Sounds great, and having a lot of fun experimenting with its sound design options. Still far from unlocking it's full potential, needing to learn the intricacies of the elektron sequencer,.. but I'm happy with it,
