JHS Sweet Tea V3 2-in-1 Dual Overdrive Pedal Reviews

Dual Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal with Moonshine V2 and Angry Charlie V3

Fusing JHS's Moonshine V2 and Angry Charlie V3 into a single stompbox, the Sweet Tea V3 does it all — from screaming tube-like overdrive to British high-gain distortion. The Moonshine takes classic mid-heavy drive into new territory with enhanced gain, volume, and flexibility. The Angry Charlie turbocharges your amp with a JCM800-style tone stack, conjuring up the famous Marshall-cranked-to-the-max "Brown Sound." Having two pedals in one is awesome, but JHS didn't stop there. The "order toggle" lets you pick the order of the Sweet Tea V3's signal path, making an already flexible pedal even more of a tonal Swiss army knife.

Brand new

By John Frederick from Henderson, NV on March 12, 2024 Music Background: Beginner

Even though I'm brand new to playing the guitar, I know what my ears like. All the different grungy guitar sounds that this little brown box produces is amazing! The overdrive is so much more than I expected. I'm sure as time goes bye and I have more experience under my fingertips, I'll really love the sounds the sweet tea allows me to produce

Awesome pedal

By Sweetwater Customer on April 9, 2023

I have a fender style amp set up. Being able to instantly dial in Marshall sounds with the angry Charlie side is awesome to have at push of the button. The moonshine is a tube screamer type thing with more of everything. Stacking them is epic. Been digging starting clean angry charlie into dirty moonshine with a good amount of clean blended in.

JHS Sweet Tea

Great all-around pedal. A pedal that can really be the main one you need. Doesn't get shrill or anything even with a high gain setting like other pedals. Sounds like an amp for sure.

Another great pedal.

Another great pedal. Sounds great. Love it.

Outstanding Pedal (that does everything it says it will)

By Lou M on May 29, 2021

One side is an "amp" - you know your amp settings - BAM you're done.

The other side is a "ScubeTreamer" - you know your ScubeTreamer settings - BAM you're done...

And then the fun starts Angry Charlie into Moonshine? + or - on the Moonshine? How much Clean do you want to blend in?

This is a perfect pedal but you will not need a degrees in Musicology, Engineering or Alchemy to get the sound you want quickly. AND you can still twist knobs and flick switches and change it up.

Legally* every guitarist in a band should have to own this pedal!

Easy decision!!!

By Sweetwater Customer on September 17, 2020

I found myself caught choosing between Marshall in a Box or Tube Screamer type pedals and this pedal made that decision easy. I get British roar and green pedal smooth in the same pedal and to turn it up a notch kick the Moonshine into the Angry Charlie for real saturation.

Great tone

By Brian Mark from Fremont, NE on August 20, 2019 Music Background: Part-Time Pro Musician since '99

While I don't normally use distortion pedals of any sort or tube screamer variety of pedals, I bought this for rehearsals and doing videos. I also intend to use it as a backup for my JMP-1 rig, but haven't needed it yet luckily.

I can dial in a usable tone very quickly with this, switching the overdrive to the post position allows me to use it as a simple lead boost, and the harmonics and feedback feel very natural. I'm very happy with it.

Sweet Pedal from Sweetwater and JHS

By Adam Craft from Montgomery, IL on March 28, 2019

First off my Sweetwater rep Oscar is great! Had an email issue when I ordered the Sweet Tea and Oscar
was determined to make it right and did just that with a very friendly attitude.
The first thing I did before I put it on my board was to compare the Moonshine side to my early 80's
TS9. I may just take that old green box off my board and frame it. If the Moonshine does not sound
exactly like it that is probably because it is even better. The Angry Charlie offers tones I did not know
I even needed,but do now.
I recommend opening the back and reading the note. JHS is just a great company as is Sweetwater.

Just... Wow...

I have had this pedal for about 3 months now, and I absolutely love it. It was the first JHS pedal I have owned and I am super happy with it. It is definitely worth the price!

Sweeter than Tea!

By David Ruiz from Arlington, VA on December 21, 2017 Music Background: Pop, Jazz, Worship

Amazing dual OD/Dist pedal! Hands down!

About a year or so ago I was on the hunt for a good OD/Dist pedal for leads and solos. I tried so many that I would either take them off my board or sell them. Finally, I ran into the Sweet Tea V2, bought and immediately dialed in my tone I was looking for which ended my search. When I heard that JHS was releasing the V3 with the EQ on the Angry Charlie side, I immediately sold my V2 to get the new V3. Hands down it is the best dual overdrive I have ever had on my board, for leads it's amazing, for solos, notes are sustained for days! I couldn't be more happier with this. Highly recommended!!

If you're looking for something more on the low/med gain this will work as well! Although I recommend the Double Barrel for that!

Attn: Les Paul users: ANGRY CHARLIE

By Paul from N of Dallas TX on November 22, 2017

If you're like me it has always been a struggle to find pedals that work well with a Les Paul, as we tend to really use the vol and tone controls a lot on the LP for various sounds.
Many OD and Dist pedals seemed to be geared more for an on 10 Strat single coil thing.
I have come to a hand picked amazing pedal array for the Les Paul which brings just about any style or tone you would care to imagine. This V Sweet Tea was my latest acquisition in the never ending quest for cool pedals.
I had long used a Pinnacle Deluxe V1 for my high gain Marshall JCM800 stuff ranging from Pagey's more cleaner sort of tones (vols dwn) to all out EVH brown sound. I never really imagined anything could bump the Wampler not even the V2 Pinnacle!
Well I knew of JHS, pedals but not their newer stuff, ...wow, ...what can I say, this pedal is just astounding! A range of OD to high gain which just sounds utterly clean to Cranked Marshall JCM800.
I just could not stop playing it.
It has that feel, that tone, that response, headroom, just everything!
You can adjust the tone EQs any which way you chose and there is never a bad sound out of this puppy.Cut the mids for that particular tone or boost a little for mix cut leads.

Love the Moonshine V2 side as well and either before/after the Angry Charlie, or alone w something else this is a jewel in itself. A tubescreamer mod never sounded so good, two amazing pedals in one!

What is also amazing is no matter what I combine with these pedals the stacking just comes out with more and more tones that are musically useful.
I have my D&M Keeley drive in front of the Sweet Tea and man there are endless combinations of stacking and tones here. I love these pedals. If you're a Les Paul fanatic like me, stop looking, get yourself a tall glass of Angry Charlie Sweet Tea (V3) and enter into the gates of Avalon!
I fail to comprehend that there is a better sounding Marshall AMP in a Box pedal than Charlie!
Thank you JHS crew, genius stuff here!

SWEET TEA V3....DOESNT GET ANY SWEETER THAN THAT!!!

By Jim Phelps from Massachusetts on September 13, 2017 Music Background: 30+ years playing

Another overdrive home run from JHS pedals. Version 3 is a step in the right direction compared to the previous sweet tea version 2...which is an amazing overdrive box of ultimate TONE!!! The addition of the clean blend knob on the moonshine side and the 3 separate EQ knobs on the Angry Charlie side definitely kick the "dial in tone" factor up a few notches. The sweet tea v3 is the perfect example of overdrive options galore....its a ten trick pony capable of smooth soft fuzziness for jazz/blues all the way to face melting, paint peeling metal high gain. A great dual overdrive worthy of a permanent spot on any board.

wow!!!

The best overdrive pedal combination!!!!

What a great pedal

By Tim on December 10, 2021 Music Background: Tone enthusiast and candy junkie

Outstanding tones inside this bad boy but I would recommend a noise gate. The angry Charlie side is a bit noisy.

I would recommend it.

Who needs a drive channel anyways

By Judas from the Sin Cakes from Toledo, ohio on June 23, 2018 Music Background: Guitarist/recording hobbyist

Since getting this pedal I have virtually stopped using both of my amps built in drive channels. Everything from blues to classic rock to metal I"ve found inside the sweet tea v3. Is it the end all be all of any of those sounds? Probably not to some, but I"m having a hard time finding a sound I don"t love out of it. Really can put that cranked Marshall tone into the cleanest of amps.

Just Nasty

By Jared from GA on March 22, 2018

JHS couldn't have chosen two better pedals to put together. The Angry Charlie is a monster alone. Throw in the Moonshine and you have one of the best overdrive/distortion pedals on the market. Only reason it isn't a 5 star is because they must have updated the switching on the pedal but not updated the paper insert. It doesn't work exactly how the paper has it laid out. JHS is the best pedal company out there if you buy one you will not be disappointed.

Now I Get It

By Anonymous from New England on February 15, 2023

I've had the Sweet Tea for a while and was underwhelmed to be honest. I have two excellent Marshall in a box pedals (Catalinbread DLS and ZVEX Distortron) and this one didn't seem as good. But picking up the JHS Double Barrel (and loving that) made me break the Sweet Tea out to give it another go. And I'm glad I did.

The secret to this pedal is the mid control. It has an especially broad and musical sweep that takes my tone from scooped high gain rhythm to mids forward JCM800 lead tones. This one control helps make this one of the most versatile amp in a box pedals I own.

Add to this the Moonshine modded Tube Screamer side of the Sweet Tea. Its clean blend knob makes this an especially versatile Tube Screamer unique from my Bonsai, TS808, TS9 and modded Maxons.

The Sweet Tea is magic. The only reason for four stars instead of five is is that it is nearly impossible to read the labels on the knobs be ause of dark ink on dark finish.
