Xotic Super Clean Buffer Mini Buffer Pedal Reviews

Buffer Guitar Effects Pedal with +12dB Clean Boost and Selectable Boost Frequency

True-bypass pedals are great. They don’t alter your tone when they’re not in use. But — as the guitarists here at Sweetwater will attest — if you string a lot of them together, your tone will suffer. And if you throw long cable runs into the mix, the problem is even worse. So what can you do? Xotic’s Super Clean Buffer to the rescue! The SCB acts as a defibrillator for your tone. Its built-in high-performance preamp is built around the famous JRC4558 chip to ensure a classic sound. Its buffer circuit employs a discrete design, and it yields an open, wide spectrum of tone. Beyond that, it boasts a rich-sounding +12dB clean boost with a selectable boost frequency. Want to improve your tone? Get a Super Clean Buffer — it’s that easy.

I’m a Believer

By Mike from Lake Stevens, WA on November 9, 2022 Music Background: Tone passionate, casual multi-instrumentalist playing in church band.

After reading a lot of reviews and trying a number of other boost type pedals I pulled the trigger on the Xotic Super Clean. I am now a convert - this unit delivers on tone! Play with it on and then play with it off - "Hey, who stole rich, clear tone…give it back!" Yeah, it's like that.

It definitely is signal chain sensitive - if I put it in front of my overdrive, it pushes things dirty in a hurry. If I put it after and before reverb, modulation and delays, it gives me rich clean that I can more finely control that slight dynamic break-up with my over drive. So for me it has worked very well by giving me better, richer tone and enhancing my existing pedal performance.

And then there is running your acoustic through it - just the Super Clean with a touch of plate reverb - Deliciously rich with equally warm low end and crystal clear high end. Super Clean Indeed!

Just added this Super Sweet Pedal to my line up. Great addition for sure.

Wow!

By Jon from Vermont on April 2, 2021 Music Background: Beginner guitarist. Lover of the Rock ‘n Roll.

I playing into a Marshall ORI20 combo tube amp. Holy smokes! The ORI series is a low gain push, so it does need a little help. I wish I had purchased the Super Clean earlier. It woke up the sleeping Littlest Giant (my amp). Excellent tone. Nice gentle gain that leads to some breakup. Just right. Stack on some OD or high gain. It really ties my main effects together. Thanks to Ian A., for helping with all of my questions, and taking the time to help me with my purchases over the last year.

Always on - excellent tone enhancer!

By Russell from North Richland Hills, TX on March 28, 2021 Music Background: Professional guitarist

The Super Clean delivers excellent tone enhancement! Whatever your tone, it will make it sound better. I initially purchased it to use at the end of a long chain of pedals, but I was so pleased with the tone, that I purchased another one for my small pedalboard. I am a 45+ year professional guitarist and was already satisfied with my tone, but this little pedal makes what you have even better. It's difficult to choose adequate descriptive words, but when you hear it, you know it's a keeper. Always on - love it!

Excellent Clean boost

By James Huse from Carmel, IN on January 7, 2021

I am impressed. Very clean and powerful. I am using the Super Clean as an always-on pedal in front of my drive pedals. The gain control is set around 9 o'clock to give just a small push. I am running the tone switches at stock "all-off" setting, and it's perfect for my needs. The switches do make a surprisingly significant impact on the eq profile of the pedal. The stock setting is described by Xotic as a mid-boost. To my ears, this mid-boost is subtle, mild and very musical. The EQ shape is NOT like a tube screamer's mid hump; it's rather natural sounding and pairs nicely with my Strats and Les Paul.

This pedal can be run at either 9VDC or 18VDC. The 18V setting definitely opens up the dynamics and feel, but so far, I am running it at 9V. I have yet to crank the gain to assess the output, but based on the settings I have used this at, I'm confident that I have more than enough gain potential to boost my overdrives as needed.

On my bigger board I use RC Boosters for this same always-on roll. The RC Booster is perhaps my favorite pedal, but as I was putting together a small board, I (1) was trying to minimize cost, and (2) really like the smaller footprint of the mini pedals. All in all, the Xotic Super Clean is a total winner.

Another always on pedal

Another always on pedal at the end of my chain, EP always on front of chain. Tone tone tone!

Exactly what it says it is

By Doug on June 6, 2020

When they say Super Clean, that's just truth in advertising. I have this set at about ten o'clock; it adds just a little volume, a lot more tone, and NO distortion, even on double-stops and chords. I'm sure I'll play with it some more, but the sound is so great I don't feel like changing anything for a little while.

Super awesome

By Brian Morgenstern on March 26, 2020

The xotic super clean is fantastic. It enhances the tone of my guitar so much. So far i have used it on my classic vibe 60s strat and the tone boost depth of sound clarity and ability to eq the tone with external dip switches is great. For my strat i cut the highs and beefed up the mids and lows for a fatter richer tone and it works great. Cant wait to try it on my gretsch and Epi Sheraton

Great sounding always/on pedal

This is an excellent pedal that makes your
guitar have a fantastic clean sound through an
amp

Great little boost.

By Jerry from St. Louis MO on December 28, 2019 Music Background: hobbyist

I purchased the Super Clean to boost my pedalboard signal through a 20 ft. cable to give the OD channel that "10' cable. direct in feel and response". The buffer (pedal off) does improve the tone but my rig seems to do a bit better with the boost on with upper mid boost on. This is highly dependant upon the CABLE you use and the length of it. I power mine with 18 volts and run it below 9:00 just for added sustain, sensitivity, and to reduce tone suck in the cable. It does seem to overdrive the bass tone a bit when turned up too much, but your rig and cables may perform differently than mine. Big thanks to Paul Rowan for his input, and service. One of the best things about Sweetwater, they pair you with a sales rep that you get to know over the years so the service is very personal!! Always a pleasure to deal with a friend.

Super Clean

Does just what it says. Amazing pedal.

Xotic pedals, are they the best?

By Paul from N of Dallas on March 24, 2019

I used to not bother w these small pedals considering many of them to be just cheesy cheap, low budget offerings. Then I tried some Xotic, I realized how amazing these small pedal really are. While I just don't need another drive or comp I would not hesitate to grab any of these little wonders up. I have been using an EP3 booster pedal for ages and it will not only never be turned off it will never leave my board. Just got the clean buffer boost and man, once again floored over the built quality and headroom clarity and campers if you're having trouble telling if you have or need a buffer, hook this one up you'll hear a difference and my board is mega top shelf. I started running my EP3 and CleanBoost on 18v and wondering why I had not tried this sooner. The headroom, clarity, quality improvement to the over all tone is just superb. After recently getting the Xotic Wah I am wondering if these cats just might be the best pedal makers to be found. Their stuff survives my constant pedal changes and progression and has be seriously considering maybe I need to replace others with more Xotic goodness! I think I need to seriously look at the larger pedals they do as the small ones are astounding.

Ahead Of The Crowd

By Mel B. from Buffalo N.Y. on March 10, 2019 Music Background: Hobbyist

What separates the Super Clean from the crowd is low intrinsic noise level. While adding gain always seems to add noise, too many pedals have what I hear as excessive noise. Many guitarists regard these high noise levels as part of the program. Reviewers seem to accept the noise & never mention it. In my quest for less noisy volume/gain this pedal moves to the top tier. It is very clean.

Nice pedal

By John from Nevada on November 22, 2022

I purchased this pedal as sort of a buffer line driver in my effects loop.but it was more powerful than I needed(for that purpose) & in fact I'm still not totally sure how I will utilize this pedal. But I can say it's good in front of an amp as as a solo boost,a buffer,I also used it to increase the volume on a mismatched volume levels on a stereo effects loop, the dip switches allow for tone sculpting (& there on the outside of the pedal) so this is very good pedal & packs a big punch in a small package .

Not for Mesa Dual Rectifier

By Thomas Seymour from Pasadena, TX on July 29, 2020

Tried this hoping to brighten up the dual rectifier clean sound. I put it after my SP compressor, which works great by the way. It did help the clean sound. But when I start playing leads on channel 3 it started chopping off the higher notes. Even when the pedal was off. Like it was too buffered. My rig likes true by pass pedals. Anything buffered and it alters my tone considerably. I took it out of the chain and my tone was restored. Had to send it back.

Not impressed

By Sweetwater Customer on August 7, 2022

I was unimpressed, I have a fender twin reverb and run mostly earthquaker pedals and found at all times it made my pedals sound worse, want to sound better, just buy more earthquaker pedals

Uh…..not so Clean

By AJ from Columbus, OH on July 6, 2021 Music Background: violin, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, worship, folk, funk and fun!

Hi,
I'm a violin player who amplifies my instrument with an LR Baggs acoustic pickup. After seeing a video by an acoustic guitar player using this pedal, I thought I'd try it on my violin. In addition to the Baggs bridge pickup, I use a LR Baggs voiceprint to produce a more natural "woody" instrument sound. HOWEVER….. the voiceprint, while adjusting the sound, also lowers the signal output a bit.

SooOOOoOOo….the SuperClean absolutely DOES amplify the signal, however it adds in some distortion. My violin almost had a 'trumpet' sound because of the distortion at the attack of the notes.

Just an FYI for Acoustic Musicians!!
