Fender Super-Sonic 22 1x12" 22-watt Tube Combo Amp - Blonde Reviews

22-watt 2-channel All-tube 1x12" Guitar Combo Amplifier

Fender turned heads a few years back when they crammed two classic amps and the high-gain crunch of modern amps into one box. Well, they re-tooled the Super-Sonic, dropping it down to 22 watts, and giving this latest incarnation a fatter tone and more bass. With a passel of tubes and two channels, you can dial in your perfect guitar tone. The Super-Sonic 22 is designed for serious players desiring modern high-gain tones and industry-standard Fender clean tones - and it delivers it all perfectly! The Super-Sonic 22 is built around a 22-watt all-tube amp driving a single 12" speaker. The Super-Sonic 22 boasts a 6V6 power section that offers up a deluxe reverb-style feel with moderate output. Like its big brother, the Super-Sonic 22 can conjure everything from classic clean to face-melting high-gain tones.

Great Amp

By Doug Bounds from Sharptown, MD on August 31, 2023 Music Background: gigging local bars & clubs since 1975

I've owned this amp for a month or two & have gigged with it twice. very happy with it. beautiful clean tones & the best distortion / gain I've heard out of a Fender since my Hotrod DeVille / 4x10.
the stock speaker is fine. but I did replace it with a Eminence Texas Heat 1x12 speaker. and I replaced the preamp tubes in the V1 & V2 with 5751's. great amp ... won't break your back either. I've added a 1x15 cab with an Eminence speaker as well. overall tone is FAT ...

This amp is incredible!!!

By Nicholas McArthur from HANNIBAL, MO on June 30, 2023

I did tons of research and I was on the fence on whether to go boutique, Mesa, or Fender. The mark iv and cali tweed from mesa were enticing but the price was a little high and it looked like I could get a very similar set up with this amp. I say that as a guitarist that prefers the cleaner/early breakup side of the tone spectrum. This amp delivers everything I need in spades! Beautiful clean tone, addictive early breakup tone, I am in heaven! I tried two speaker swaps with speakers I had on hand. I swapped a WGS 12C in as well as an Alltone 1250. Neither of them sounded as good as the stock Fender Lightning speaker. Very impressive!

Great Amp

Excellent amplifier does everything you'd expect a great fender product to do. Buttery lows Excellent drive channel wonderful reverb and the 2 gain controls. I've gone through many amplifiers many brands, but always seem to return to fender, glad I did buy this amp it's a winner!!

Call The Fire Department.

By mike from Saint Petersburg FL on November 30, 2022

Got this Amp the other day, took it out of the box plugged it in and let it warm up for about 30 minuets.

Stuck the jack in and played around with the clean channel, was blown away, then hit the burn switch, Wow this 22 watt amp scrams, had to stop and make sure my house wasn't catching on fire from the flame this little amp throws out.

It is almost as loud as my 73' black face super reverb, as for the overdrive, just as good as my Peavey 6505+

Just wish it had tilt backs,

THE upgrade for Supersonic 22's

By 2mnygtrs from Austin, TX on March 31, 2021 Music Background: Playing for 48 years

Get your Sweetwater Rep on the phone and order an Eminence Neo EM-12 for @$150. They are clones of the legendary EV 12L's but with neodymium magnets. EV 12L's weigh about 17 lbs. Eminence EM-12's weigh a little over 4 pounds. They also sound better (I have several of both) than EV 12L's in that their high end/treble is rounder and more pleasing to the ear. They're loud as heck. Yes, I have one in my Supersonic 22 and on the heavy channel, it sounds like a half stack due to the tremendous frequency (low end in this situation) range. Tight and huge. Been playing since 1972, yes, it sounds like a half stack with one of these 4 pound speakers. Buy one from Sweetwater and get ready. The Clean Channel sounds incredible as well with this speaker.
NOTE TO KEMPER POWERHEAD USERS: These are your speakers. Put these flat-response 4 pounders in a 2x12 cabinet like I have. They're PERFECT for a Kemper Powerhead gigging player. Lightweight and they DO NOT color your Kemper's tone.

Best sounding amp I've used, by far

By Alex Garnes from Austin, TX on December 3, 2020 Music Background: wannabe rockstar

When I was ready to step up to an all tube amp I called Bryan because I knew I'd get great advice. He asked a series of questions to help focus on some options. Separate from the amp review, I love this about Sweetwater. He didn't try to sell me something he wanted to sell, he found out what I wanted and helped me choose.

This amp is loud! It goes from super clean Fender sounds to raunchy hitting every note in between. I don't use my OD pedal because I don't need it. The onboard reverb is as good as I've heard. The only other sound I add is a delay through the effects loop.

I was worried that I wouldn't be able to discern the quality difference over my very nice and capable Boss Katana-100. I thought maybe I was just chasing the tube sound because that's what the pros use. The Super-Sonic just sounds amazing and makes the Katana sound stale by comparison. I've also played Fender's Blues Jr and Bassbreaker. The Super-Sonic is my favorite.

Finally, consider getting an attenuator to turn down the dbs without sacrificing sound if you practice at home. I use a Two Notes Torpedo Captor 8 to cut -20dbs off the amp. It helps but it's still a loud amp.

It's the best Marshall I've owned

By Jeremy Fischer from Somerset, KY on November 28, 2020

I've been a Marshall player since I started using tube amps. I've tried most of the model types on my tone quest. I eventually found a Fender Tonemaster -- a 100w beast designed by Bruce Zinky. The sound was amazing -- think vintage Aerosmith sounds -- but the only way to get that sound required the amp to be way too loud for home or even small gigs.

I reluctantly traded it away and kept on my search. I read somewhere that the SuperSonic 22 tone stack was essentially the same as the Tonemaster but scaled down in power. That was absolutely right. This hits those tones I always thought of as vintage Marshall without needing to be at deafening volumes. I never expected to be a Fender amp player but this amp just hits the beautiful cleans and the amazing growls and grit. I couldn't be happier with this amp!

Great amp

By Gerald from Louisiana on May 28, 2020 Music Background: Simi professional

I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't already been covered in all the reviews. I wasn't sure at first, about the dirty channel but the more I play it the better it sounds. It sounds pretty good at lower volumes but when you get it to 4 and above it's a completely different animal. The sound quality is amazing, clean and dirty with no pedals required. Thanks Sweetwater

The tone that makes you want to play

By Gerald Cook from Louisiana on May 25, 2020 Music Background: Simi professional

Out of the box I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. The clean channel is amazing, even better than what I expected. It breaks up around 4.5 volume and in my small room that's very loud. The gain channel sounded like a tin can at low volumes at first but I kept playing around with different settings. The card on top of the amp list some presets to dial in like Texas Blues,Heavy,Lo-Fi Fuzz and Plays Itself so I tried all of those and I realized how dynamic this little amp really is especially when you run the volume up to 4 or better. It's been a week now and it seems like the more I play it, the better it sounds. The tin can sound has faded and now it's getting this rich full tone that I can't stop thinking about. I'm guessing the speaker is breaking in and now I just want to crank this thing up and jam every chance I get. I could never settle for just one amp but if I had to pick 2... they would be Marshall and this Supersonic.

Awesome Amp

By Gus on February 2, 2019

Love it. Absolutely love it. Low volume is awesome on it as well and the reverb and Burn channel sound legit. It can get a little fuzzy if you push the gain too hard, but there are some truly musical tones you can dial in once you get a feel for the gain knobs and blend them. Newer models have definitely improved on past defeciencies as well.

Upgrade the tubes and speaker and BOOM.

Better Than The Reviews Indicate

By Don M on November 24, 2018 Music Background: Recording Musician

Fender outdone (or outdid) themselves on the latest incarnation of the Super-Sonic. Then, once they cleared up initial issues with the new and improved SS 22 (noisy reverb in particular pre-2013), they outdid themselves again, by out doing the only other Fender amp in this class. Specifically, they surpassed the Deluxe Reverb Re-issue.
So here we are now with a superb clean channel, and yes, overdrive channel, in the same Fender amplifier. But wait! There's more!
You can easily turn this into a pedal platform amp by utilizing what is an incredible FX Loop, included Spring Reverb, and sleep easy knowing it takes all drive pedals at the input as well....on either channel!
Not that by any means does it absolutely need an additional drive pedal. It doesn't, with one caveat. If you want metal type gain, it isn't built in to this and. Blues, yep. "Pop Rock", yep. Even Hard Rock lies within. But metal, it does not. But put a distortion pedal up front, and it'll breathe fire just fine. One bit of advice to turn this something even beyond simple greatness, is to pony up for a true, high-end speaker like a Celestion Alnico Gold. Not a WGS. Not an Eminence. A Celestion. A Celestion Alnico Gold. Don't cheap out or cut corners. Obtain and install this speaker and you're elevated to something 3 dimensional, crystal clear, and toneful on both channels, that has little by way of competition. Not at this price point, or at a price point far greater.

Where's the Love? An Incredible, Underrated Amp

By Conor Mason from Hermitage PA on July 3, 2018 Music Background: once an old pro and toured. I do home recording and jam for fun now. I'm an old pro

Hello all in Sweetwater land! This is my most recent purchase and, along with a funny story, comes a piece of gear that I am completely blown away by. I will give a friendly head's-up; Always make sure you are in a good frame of mind and mood before testing out ANY new gear...different mindset = different filter in your head and ears! Haha! I'll be honest at first...after having a really bad morning and getting, what I thought was a huge bill in the mail, I made the mistake of trying to cheer myself up with the new amp without giving myself a good break first. YAY new gear!! yeah...ahem...not a good idea! I was NOT impressed at all and everyone around me was like, 'what's wrong with you? that thing is AMAZING!!!' I was ready to send it back pronto. So, after a pep talk from my SE Dontae Harris and another round with the amp....just....WOW....I'm not someone who gives 5-star reviews at length, nor have I reviewed everything I have ever purchased from Sweetwater...but that will change now! This incredible amplifier really is the most underrated and underappreciated amplifier I have EVER heard or played through. I played the 60w version years ago and I am sad to see the Super-Sonic line so small now. So, on to the review!

Honestly, this USA made combo is simply impressive on all levels. The build quality is SUPERB. it is compact and not terribly heavy for a Valve amp. The knobs, switches and pieces are all tight and assembled with real care. I see no quality care issues at all and it is readily apparent with the astounding tone, the more traditional build makes, especially with the Valves mounted to the chassi versus a PC board. There are no fit and finish flaws either and it was carefully packed in the factory. I think the pricepoint, albeit not the least expensive amp in the industry is really competitive for a USA made combo that oozes quality in the build, parts/components, and especially tone. I'd gladly take this over a less expensive amplifer and pay any extra for the quality here. The metal (yay) jack is tight to the chassi and is quality. My cables went right into place securely without any wiggles. And, Fender has not spared any expense with using Groove Tubes throughout and a high quality 'Lightning Bolt' speaker by Eminence. Every part of the amplifier is high quality and feels really up to handling the rigors of the road and rowdy kids if you are a bedroom rocker! Now, to the tone!!!

This style amp, which is based off the Deluxe Reverb platform and marries the retired Pro-Sonic amplifier to it for high gain sounds is new to me. I've always played Marshalls, a Mesa Boogie F-50 and a Blackstar HT Club 40 that will be gathering dust now! This is my first Fender, but I have played them. I rarely use pedals except for effects or a solo boost. I always get my distortion from the amp. This being said, I simply ADORE the tone. The 22w output section is plenty loud and literally fills the room with musical, inspiring, usable tone and volume. It not so loud where it's just noise. I do wish they hadn't gotten rid of the 60w version for folks who need that kind of power. But, believe me when I say this is NO slouch of an amp! It's LOUD....but usably so, and incredibly, sounds amazing at low volume levels! I am impressed. I have become an Instant fan of the 6V6 output tubes...6L6GC tubes, to my ears, are a little too scooped and 'woofy' for me dirty. The 6V6 tubes get really creamy when pushed and have a natural compression that really makes any guitar sing. The preamp section, using both 12AX7 and 12AT7 as the drivers for gain, reverb and the rest of signal path are top notch from Groove Tubes. This preamp section is exceptionally well voiced and I just love the cascading gain stage. It really is like having a compression pedal in the amp with gain 2 and you can get, literally, any sound from this amp. It will do anything from Blues to metal and everything in-between. The gain can get fuzzy or creamy and saturated with the turn of the two gain knobs and every bit is usable and musical. The tone stack is wonderful on this amp, especially in the way Fender set it up. After Gain 1 and 2, you have Treble, Bass then Middle. So it is affected in that order as the signal processes to the output section. Treble is always usable and musical, the Bass is usable all the way to 10 and you can push the midrange without getting the sound too strident and harsh. Conversely, it will also do a scooped sound without having to take the mids all the way out and turning your tone to mush. But, it will do that in spades if you like that tone. The gains are thick, but musical and singing and you can tailor it with the cascading gain stages. I LOVE this feature! I put almost every guitar I had through the amp and it took them all...and I mean, Les Paul, PRS Singlecut and CE24, the ZM model...I used my Gibson SG, my down-tuned Fender Double Fat strat with EMGs, my 7 string...my Squier '72 VM Tele with wide range HB's....it took them ALL and never masked the true tone of each guitar. It only enhanced it! It will go as tight or as chugging as you like! clean or filthy gain!

Now, what about the cleans? It does them with ease and in spades, as is classic Fender Tone. It is based off the Deluxe reverb model, so the 6V6 output section will affect things here. But you have two options. the Vintage which is more classic Fender...warm, but glassy and sparkly here...more traditional Fender Clean. Engage the Fat switch and it instantly reminds me of a more modern amp. It is fatter, warmer, adds a ton of Bass to the tone and rounds out the mids, more like a Bassman or the newer Bassbreaker. It is wonderful with Single coils but can instantly create a warm Jazz tone. Pedals, like practically every tube amp, work wonderful here. The Reverb is never over the top and is a long-spring Reverb. Classic fender, but is never over-the-top here. I am hard-pressed to find anything I don't love about this amp. The gain stages does everything I threw at it really. And, with a good EQ pedal and a gain pedal it will do literally anything i can think of easily. It is only 22w but don't let that fool you! It is a loud amp that is deceptively powerful. It may take some pedals and EQ to get a sound like a hard metal tone and a tighter bottom end, depending on your needs. But I had no problem unleashing my Metallica, Killswitch Engage and Pantera licks on this amp with the right guitar!

Thanks for reading this review and I hope it was helpful. I have found it is worth saving for a higher end piece of equipment after several bad amp experiences. Amplifiers is one place I will not scrimp on any more, especially for Valve amps. The difference is amazing. This really is the most versatile amp i have ever come across and is unique in its tone with the 6V6 power section. It is, by far my favorite now and I was a die-hard Marshall fan! My MG50 will still get used for more practice sessions and late night jams. Please give this overlooked amp a chance! It really needs more love from us musicians! There is a ton of value in this amplifier and worth a look and saving up for! And, USA built! Corona, CA. Check it out!

Sweetwater is the greatest!

By Chris from Pa. on April 26, 2018 Music Background: Blues/Rock

Man,hats off to the guys at Sweetwater for such outstanding service and super fast one day shipping. Ordered my amp yesterday and it arrived next day, well packed and in perfect condition. The Fender Super Sonic 22 combo sounds amazing! It is everything I was looking for in a mid-size Fender combo, the cleans are very good and the overdrive channel is awesome as well. I was undecided on this or the 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb, but I'm very happy with my choice, this amp gives up the goods and then some!

Finally found what I've been looking for

By Dean from Kentucky on November 25, 2017 Music Background: Weekend warrior for many, many years

I've owned so many different amps throughout the years that I would be typing all day if I listed them. And I can honestly say that my Fender Supersonic 22 is my favorite. It's got the 3 dimensional, warm, room filling clean sound of an old Deluxe. Then you switch over to the dirty channel and you get lost in all the amazing sounds you can get from this thing. From light breakup to seriously heavy gain. No matter how much gain you use it retains note clarity and definition. I usually play with light to medium gain, and this amp absolutely SINGS at that level. I just played another show with it tonight, with a loud, aggressive drummer and it has absolutely no problem at all keeping up in terms of volume. I had PLENTY of room left that I could have cranked it on up. This thing is louder than you ever, realistically need and the clean channel stays clean when you get it up to ridiculously loud volume. The reverb is what you expect from an old classic Fender, it sounds the way a real spring reverb is supposed to sound. The amp sounds so good and is so versatile I don't even use pedals anymore. Just my G&L Comanche straight into my Supersonic 22. And I could not be happier with my tone... I love this amp and recommend it very highly. And if you're wondering about it shipping safely, do not worry. Sweetwater has packing amps down to a science. I am very impressed with Sweetwater and plan to be a repeat customer.

Pure Awesomeness

By Zeb from BFE Montana on October 3, 2017

this is the most versatile amp I've had the pleasure of owning, it's got a growl that is just mean, put the gains at 12'oclock and it sounds like a pissed off dog ready to tear somebody up. the clean is great, it breaks nicely just has a great sound. it is loud! I was very surprised what this thing can do the tone controls are very responsive it really accents the guitar plugged into it. the reverb is great, has a nice crunch, awesome fuzzy Hendrix sound. really angry metal sound.

Excellent, Versatile Amp!

By Hesh Breakstone from Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 2, 2017 Music Background: Profesional Luthier, Ann Arbor Guitars Co-owner

Been playing my new Super-Sonic (blond) from Sweetwater for about a week now and I could not be more pleased!

The Super-Sonic has ample power for practicing, recording and gigging in small venues but most importantly it has great tone and is very versatile. I wanted the clean sound that Fender and the Deluxe Reverb are legendary for but I also wanted a "burn" channel as well with easy foot switching between the two. I was also prepared to pay twice as much to get where I wanted to go.

The Super-Sonic delivers on all fronts and has motivated me to start playing longer and more often. It's so much more fun through a killer amp!

Sweetwater and my rep, Jon Faloon were perfect in making my purchase experience stellar in all respects. I also wondered if it was safe to purchase a tube amp that would require enduring the rigors of shipping.... The amp came very well packaged, a factory box "floating..." in a larger, more rugged box cushioned all around by durable air cells. The packaging alone is an engineering achievement!

Lastly I'm no stranger to amps, guitars, etc. As co-owner of one of the most successful and busy dedicated guitar repair shops located in Ann Arbor I work on guitars for novices to the stars every day. With this said it takes a lot amp wise or guitar wise to excite me these days.

The Super-Sonic may be one of Fender's best offerings ever in so much as it delivers on all fronts, tone, quality, features, and value.

Highly recommended!

Very happy with my Super-Sonic 22

By Hesh B. from Ann Arbor on August 31, 2017 Music Background: Professional Luthier, co-owner Ann Arbor Guitars

Received my Super-Sonic 22 yesterday and played it for several hours. The amp is amazing in it's simplicity and tone but still offers many different desirable voices. The speaker is also a very good match for this amp's power output which although low, 22 watts it's still very loud and clear if you wish.

The amp came double boxed and in excellent condition which was a concern of mine. How do you ship a tube amp and Sweetwater clearly has this down to a science.

My Sweetwater rep, Jon Faloon was a bonus too. His diligence in the background to assure my satisfaction with my purchase and it's on-time arrival was much appreciated.

I would highly recommend this amp to anyone who wants that famous Fender clean tone but also a very versatile tone machine for rock, blues, jazz, etc. I'd also recommend Sweetrwater for perfect customer service and excellent selection and prices.

I love this amp so much. I don't turn it on till I'm in a club or a bar, I don't really want to keep it at bedroom levels,it's so Beautiful.,all by itself. I don't have to do anything. Love it. I have really not even begun to tweak it. So far all I've done was plug my Les Paul traditional Into it. I haven't even gotten to the clean channel yet, nor have I opened the beautiful foot switch, still perfectly shrink wrapped, But I'm about to, looking forward to it.thank you so much for this beautiful instrument.

Phenomenal Amp

By Ben from Colorado on April 16, 2015 Music Background: Gigging musician

This amp has it all for me. Chrystal clean tones on the vintage channel and you can dial in just the amount of overdrive you want on the burn channel. I particularly like the two overdrive knobs in the burn channel - one for the level of distortion and the second that acts like a compressor/sustainer to get that rich creamy overdrive that's great for blues. The spring reverb tops it all off nicely. And this puppy is LOUD for a 22 watt amp.

Supersonic IS Super!

By Ray Blanks from Wallingford, CT on November 5, 2013 Music Background: Rock, Jass, Christian (Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman)-style, etc.

My Sales Engineer, Carson McLain, steered me right again! I've been a Rock Star Wannna Be all my life, and right now am a Worship Leader musician at my Church. I still love to play Jazz, Blues, etc., and this amp can do it all. The 1x12 and 22 Watts is plenty for a small-to-medium sized venue. This is made in Corona, CA and the quality is very impressive, from smooth dialing knobs, to soft rubber on the cables...... it screams "Made In America"! This is basically a Deluxe Reverb with Drive vs. Vibrato. The clean and drive channels are amazing. For "Marshall-like" drive, a stomp box would be needed. This comes with a foot switch and cover. I am very pleased with this purchase.

The Fender I Always Wanted

By Planet Dave from Bay Area Ca. on August 19, 2013 Music Background: musician

It's been quite awhile since I was totally confident to gig with no pedals. Yeah I like having a delay but when things sound really good you don't miss it that much. Even though this amp plays well with overdrives and other dirt boxes I don't even miss 'em. Hey less crap between me and the speakers. The Burn channel is a thing of beauty, so flexible. I have a collection of amps, you know the usual suspects, and this is the easiest to get a good tone out of. I mean put all dials at twelve o'clock and go. That's a good sign, and you can still dial in other shadings of tone. The foot switch has buttons for two Cleans, Burn, effects loop and reverb. Audio taper volume pots would make it perfect.

This is the one

By Quinton from Kansas City, MO USA on February 8, 2013 Music Background: Gigging bassist and guitarist

I had Sweetwater bias this amp before shipping to make sure it would sound it's best. The clean channel is very thick and rich, everything you would want from a Deluxe Reverb except the crisp top end chime is pleasantly a bit subdued (I suspect the speaker is the reason). The Fat switch on this amp does a great job of getting you into Bassman Land. As for the Burn channel, I expected that it would sound like a completely different amp as with many dual chan amps. This was not the case, the SS22 retained the sonic character of it's clean channel while being pushed over the edge. The Reverb is solid state and I can usually hear the difference but, on this amp I could have been fooled if I hadn't known ahead of time. Over all this is a great investment, at 22 watts you get to that great cranked fender breakup quickly in a box that mirrors the old blonde Bassman.

killer combo

By john from san diego ca on October 16, 2012 Music Background: pro musician

amazing amp and at 22 watts very usuable at small gigs .You can mike it for larger venues. I use a clean boost infront and man did that make her come alive! vintage deluxe channel is stunning really close to a old blackface. The bassman switch adds some mids but cuts too many highs for a real fender like clean run the verb on about 2 and its fender heaven.. The overdrive is stellar. With a clean boost and just using gain one you can get true texas strat blues or danny gatton type twang with a tele. One of the best amps i have ever played . If you are trying these check the 22 the 60 may be a bit much for all venues. The 22 you can push to that sweet spot and man its sweeeeeet

Best Fender Ever

By Jim Greene from Lansing, MI on October 8, 2012 Music Background: guitarist

I got this amp after narrowing my extensive amp collection down to two gigging amps, a British Vox AC15C1 and on the USA side of the pond, a Fender Supersonic 22. The Supersonic 22 has a delicious Deluxe Reverb clean sound that Fender is famous for PLUS an absolutely killer cascading overdrive channel that alows me to gig without one single pedal. This amp has clean headroom for days (way more than the Deluxe Reverb) even though it is only rated at 22 watts. Dead quiet at idle - no buzz or annoying hiss. The stock tubes are exceptional as is the stock speaker. If you are a modder, stay away. This amp could not be more perfect and is the amp I chose, even over way more expensive boutiques as my go to amp for that famous Fender USA sound.

I doubt you can find a better amp for under $1000 ..........

By Kbrooks from Va. Beach - USA on September 5, 2011 Music Background: Rhythm/Lead Guitar- Lead/Backup Vocals

I rarely give a perfect score to any hardware. I've had this about a week, but I was in love with it the first time I demo'd it in a local shop.

Sound:
To use a quote from one of my favorite books the sound is "Honey poured over Thunder" (Makes my old amp sound like "Piss poured over a fart") Seriously though, sound is so subjective I wont get into all that, but I will say that I think most people will be able to find a sound they will love from this. It's really versatile when it comes to the sounds you can get from it.

Quality:
The construction is really high quality ofcourse, with great components, comes stock with GrooveTubes, Eminence Speaker and the foot switch is really heavy duty. (The foot-switch is a little large though, I think it could of been smaller)

If your looking for a good practice amp or something for small venues (Or even large venue, since it sounds pretty amazing through a good P/A) Buy this amp.

Just listen and you'll fall for it instantly!

Killer Amp with a lot of Personality

By Robert Kalberer from Boulder, CO on July 15, 2010

I got my Super Sonic 22 two days ago and it sounds great. I have played every current production Fender tube amp except the Vibro King, Vibroverb and the new Super Sonic 60 and would say if you’re comparing amps without any modifications just taking it out of the box and turning it on this is the best amp fender makes.

This is a killer amp with a lot of personality. Advertising says it’s sort of a combination of the older super sonic and a deluxe reverb, sort of ironic that I would buy it as these are two fender amps that I always felt were some of the biggest disappointments from Fender. What surprised me is that it sounds way better than a DDRI reissue. Compared to the DRRI the Super Sonic 22 sounds bigger and richer sounding, has more chime, more punch and is louder (sounds about as loud as my 40 watt 68 Vibrolux). The fat switch replaces the Vibrolux/Bassman switch of the older supersonics. The strange thing is toggling the fat switch on and off actually gives you a really good vintage Vibrolux or Bassman sound, way better than the old supersonics were supposed to do. I stick mostly with the clean channel as you can get a good edgy growl by turning it up or hitting the fat switch if you want. I didn’t spend as much time with the burn channel as I never liked the sound of multiple stages of gain as much, but I could tell you get some really good sounds off of that as well if that is more your style.

Works equally well on my Telecaster as well as my Les Paul Junior. Compared to most other Fender amps the EQ controls are much more sensitive so little adjustments make a big difference. Because of this you will probably spend more time initially to find just the right settings.

I’ve never really been a big fan of Eminence speakers they always seemed a little too airy for me but this one even without any break in sounds exceptionally full and rich. Gives you a really nice warm 3-D sound.

Love the amp in every way but one, wish the footswitch cord was quarter inch instead of the midi cord like it used to be

This thing is for Real

By Jeff Levesque from Maine on December 8, 2022 Music Background: Gigging and Recording guitarist. 30+ years. (holy schit)

I've been breaking this amp head in for 2 months with a few gigs. Impression - a very loud Double Reverb that morphs into a Vibroverb with the fat switch. A dirt channel that flows right through hot Tweed/Bassman through some dirt with real shoulders into a molten Mesa-like wall of guitar. This is not an amp you can hide behind. All the classic clean tones are "right there" and the dirty channel is a gigging guitarist's best friend. STP anyone? A very well thought out amp. It takes pedals very well. Very very happy here. I will check back in when I put a Plexi pedal to the clean channel.

Great sound -Good deal

By Donald Long from Elma New York on November 15, 2020

I am thoroughly impressed and satisfied with my new fender supersonic 22amp, it fits my needs perfectly I am also very satisfied with the professionalism and promptness of Sweetwater! I would happily recommend the company to others and wouldn't hesitate to use them again in the future!!

The amp I have been looking for.

By Sweetwater Customer on January 9, 2020

I read somewhere that if Hendrix were alive today, he would be using this amp. Maybe, maybe not but it surely would be deserving of his attention. I have been playing a friends' Super Sonic a couple years now, and though I have tried to find an amp more suitable to my playing, I just can't. So I pulled the trigger today and bought one of my own. Basically I just play it on the burn channel, but not always burning! I set up both pre-amps to about 10 o'clock, and leave it there, controlling my volume with the master volume and my guitar volume. At that setting I can get 90 % of my tones from clean to slightly clipping, and they are all as chimey or smooth or creamy as I want. Need overdrive? I just kick in one of my many pedals, which I have pre-set to a variety of tones. This amp takes pedals like none I have ever seen, no splattiness, no grimy or nasty clippy tones, just nice smooth drive that SINGS! What you dial is what you get. I just can't say enough good things about it. And the trebles, mids and bass is perfect, not artificial or fake sounding, not fizzy or woofy, just right. If you don't get what you want out of this amp, I don't know what you are looking for. Death metal maybe? Its not THAT. Buts its definitely just about everything else, and very easy to dial in on top of that. This may be the first review ever written before even getting got my amp, but I have played one of these plenty, and I can honestly say: Great job, Fender, this is perhaps one of your best efforts ever! And that's goin' some! Can't wait 'til it gets here.

Great Sound versatile amp.

Thus amp has a great response to your playing. Love the Fat channel! I've had mine now for 2 years. Have had a couple issues. Handle broke Sweetwater sent me a new one right away. My reverb channel is not adding reverb. I believe it is a tube burnt out. I have ordered all new better preamp tubes. Will update when installed.

Super Sonic

I received my amp and have had time now to get to know its capabilities .
I am going to use this amp for my Ibanez AF200 archtop guitar. At first I wasn't wild about it, but as I played it for a few hours, I began to realize that this is indeed a great amp to use for warm rich jazz tones. The clean channel really delivers the tone I had hoped for. I love the smooth tube driven delivery of sound. It is also nice to know that it can get dirty with the click of a button.

super amp

By Zydeco Ray from The Heart of Texas on July 4, 2013 Music Background: teacher, semi-pro musician, sound engineer

After I ordered the Super-Sonic 22 in white, I read some reviews that were right on. The reverb is not as great as the 60 watt version, and there is a channel switching noise. However, overall, the clean channel is very good, the overdrive side is outstanding. It's a little heavy for 22 watts, but those 22 watts go a long way, and there's a 4 button footswitch! The folks at Sweetwater were their usual great selves......Play on, as they say.....

Exactly what I was needing

By Jeff Roley from Big Rapids, MI (USA) on July 1, 2012 Music Background: I've been playing since the mid-60s and now am in OldManWorshipBand.

I purchased this at 2012 GearFest from Robby who was great to work with. It was shipped and at my home in Michigan within three days. I was looking for an amp with a clean tone that accurately projected my american deluxe telecaster and american standard stratocaster. It does not disappoint. The fat switch on the vintage clean tone is a great feature, and the burn channel does exactly that. And I don't know if there is a cooler looking amp than this one in Blonde. Maybe if they put it in a surf-foam green?

I was comparing it to a Dr Z Maz 18, and for the money (at least $1K less) it meets my need. Bandmate and Sweetwater customer, Martin Vipond, has the Super-Sonic 60 (Blonde) and I am pleasantly surprised at how it holds up in comparison.

I didn't give it a 5 star because in the original Fender packaging the amp was in the box upside down and the velcro holding the footswitch had come loose.

Enjoying my Supersonic 22!

By Mike from Fargo on June 14, 2012 Music Background: Music lover and player for 30 years!

I've had my Supersonic for over a year now and it's the best amp I've ever had. I've got an HSS Strat and I can get about any sound I want on it. Love the clean and use the burn channel in combo with my overdrive pedal. I did have the high pitched squeal issue but they swapped the tubes around and haven't had a problem since. I'm very pleased with the amp and I can't see why you would need more than 22 watts. Anything over 2 and it's hurting my ears. I mic my amp at church and have to keep it pretty low on volume. I love my gear!

S-S 22, an alternative to the '65 DR

By Gord E. from Edmonton, Alberta- Canada on November 10, 2011 Music Background: Classic Rock Band- part time

I finally found the perfect amp for me- the Super Sonic 22. I traded in my '65 Deluxe Reverb because it was just too clean and one-dimensional. I'm 59 and have been playing mainstream rock and now classic rock for about 45 years- the S-S 22 allowed me to get rid of my overdrive pedals. My only complaint is that the footswitch cord is 3X longer than it needs to be :) Highly recommend this blonde beauty!

Great Sound in a Small Package

By Josh Searls from Southside, WV, USA on May 18, 2011 Music Background: Semi Pro? I've played with pros, studios etc.

Well to start off, I am on amp #2 the first had an issue, Sweetwater had another amp the next day, I can’t say enough about their great customer service. I play southern gospel in which I need a great county sound, a great blues sound and every now and then a little more distortion for some praise and worship songs. I usually use a POD HD500 which is great, but I wanted an amp that could nail the sounds live that I get in the studio but not so much power that I can’t take it into small churches. The clean channel is simply amazing, all the sparkle you would expect from a Fender. The Fat switch adds more mids in the mix and a bit of a volume boost that gives you a fuller clean sound. Now for where the amp differs from the Deluxe Reverb, the Burn channel gives you as much or as little distortion as you like. It gives me a great blues tone on my Strat, or Tele neck pickup, and a great dirty country sound similar to a (DR Z). I cranked the gains up with my humbucker tele and it will get mean. If you need more info on this great little amp just ask for Tim Harrington.

Dope

By Aaron from Lexington, KY on May 17, 2018 Music Background: Gigging musician, recording artist,

Okay, to start off, there's some history, I didn't get the blonde one. I didn't even get the black one. I got an earlier model that was made in 2011, it's the Surf Green model with the wheat grille cloth used off a guy that hated the color. I respectfully disagree with him on the color, it looks like a technicolor madhouse on stage in certain contexts, but beautifully classy in others, but I digress. He had loaded it down with a Jenson C12N instead of the stock lightning bolt, it gives it breath and thickness the likes of which I would have never believed until I tried it. I bought it right away.

So now, this thing is a permanent mainstay of my rig. It has been since I bought it all the way back in 2012 from the guy. I keep both of the overdrive knobs around the 11:00 mark, and just keep the overdrive on because of how responsive it is to your volume control. I rock an Epiphone 335 Pro with the coil taps simply for the control. It has a bright jangle with just enough bottom end with single-coils that gives you an almost dumble-like tone. Hit it with humbuckers and suddenly your in Zeppelin-meets-Allman territory. Put a TS9 in the mix? Perfect. Just perfect. I'd highly recommend this amp to anyone that's looking for all of their tones rolled into one amp. Even though I never stray from the OD, the amount of control from the included footswitch is absurd.

A bit of warning though. It wasn't all happy times with this amp. I've played it relentlessly and there have been a few hiccups. When I first bought it the reverb tank wasn't worn in, so it had a microphonic quality; once it gets broken in with about a week of play-time you'll be fine. Also, do yourself a favor and get a 10 pack of the knobs, they will fall off. And a good leather strap to replace the funky rubber one is a decent idea, plus it'll give it the vintage vibe that I think Fender was looking for, plus it'll be way more comfortable to carry.

Oh, and not that it'll happen to you, but this thing has been sat on, stood on, knocked over, dropped, and submerged in water and dried out a couple times, and it's still kicking. It's a Fender, they're tanks.

Great Amp! Just add a reverb pedal to your order.

By Brent on March 23, 2016 Music Background: TV Composer

First off, this amp sounds undeniably amazing. If you can't get super useful tones form this amp, then its likely either your guitar or your ears have problems. That said, beware that these amps STILL suffer from quality control issues. The reverb is completely useless. Nothing but weak reverb and a super loud hum. I tried shuffling the tank around and replacing the feeder cables, but there must be a problem on the board because even with the cables detached, there is nothing but hum when the reverb is turned up. So I've just disconnected the darn thing. Apparently, this is extremely common. That said, I STILL love this amp for the tone I'm getting. Luckily, I have a fantastic external delay and reverb setup that sounds perfect in the FX loop.

So Far So Good

By Huey from Lafayette, LA on January 29, 2015 Music Background: Young man gigger and now old man bedroom player. LOL

Love the tone and mostly the versatility. Can dial up so many tones. The two gain controls is the best feature as far as versatility. Foot switch is a big plus.
I have only had this amp for a short time but, mine is pretty quite for a tube amp. Very little his or hum, even when I am sitting two feet from it facing it with a Strat or Tele. I had read reviews complaining of noise but I have not had that problem with mine.
I do think that the reviews I read about the speaker is accurate. It sounds pretty good but the high end doesn't roll off soon enough on the clean channel and it can get piercing at times. Some call it shrill or what ever but it does make me fool with the treble control a bit more. I am breaking the speaker in right now but I don't think this issue will resolve with a break in. I read a lot about speaker swaps for this amp, and in time I will change it to a Cannabis Rex or something else.
The speaker is the only issue so far that keeps me from giving a 5 star rating. Well, maybe if they used something other than Groove Tubes would help also, but honestly they have been good so far.
I drove my sales rep crazy here at Sweetwater trying to find something that would work for me, and he was great about it all. I am happy now!

Super-Sonic 22

By Michael Sumwalt from Fort Wayne, IN on November 3, 2013 Music Background: professional guitarist

very nice amp, the in-store sales associate was extremely nice and helpful. I would definetly purchase from him again

great!

By joey z from seattle, wa on November 12, 2014 Music Background: recording engineer

It's great all the other reviews are accurate, i'd just like to add that using a deluxe reverb and one of the new boss overdrive peddles would be the same as this in terms of quality, but slightly different stylistically to the point of not getting super excited about it overall; if you down tune or use an octave fender speakers have a tendency to bug out, since they are precisely attenuated to sound best with fender guitars in standard tuning; but clearly this amp is for power chords and it sounds dope, but for the price it's not blowing anybody's mind;

Breaks up !

By John Dierlam from Port Lavaca Texas on January 8, 2017 Music Background: Singer Songwriter Band Leader

well Fender finally built an amp that gets great tube break up. However the clean channel starts breaking up as soon as you pass four on the volume nobb . If you are needing the patented clean fender sound at decent stage volume don't buy this amp. I was thinking I could get all the tones I needed in one amp . I am going to try playing through the super sonic and a silver face prinston at the same time. Useing an ABY box !

Fender Super-Sonic 22

By Sweetwater Customer from AL on June 9, 2012 Music Background: hobbyist

I bought this amp with high hopes of it being what it is advertised as being - a great amp with great cleans and great overdrive sounds. Well, it did those things, BUT at certain frequencies there was a harmonic squeal and also a rattling noise. There is some type defect in a tube or something. When I was researching this amp, I saw that other people had experienced this same thing. Anyway, I returned the amp because of these issues.

Fender super sonic 22

By Tguy2 from NE Ohio on April 12, 2012 Music Background: Pro

Loud right off the mark. Doesn't get louder after 5, crap reverb. No where near a Deluxe. Channel switching is ok loud pops at times. This amp is a good example of not listening to customers and rushing an amp to market. If Fender had addressed the problems of the 60 watt model this could have been a decent amp. I always wonder why you can get a decent tapper on the volume controls. instead they blast at almost full volume on one. My advice is to try it out first. Especially the reverb which only approach's the Deluxe.

Another clunker

By Tguy62 from Usa on September 21, 2012 Music Background: Playing over 45 years

Clean channel is dull and lifeless. Overdrive channel is OK but there ism nomwaymto balance it with the clean channel. Reverb just pain stinks.
Fender needs to go back to a,tube reverb instead of this crappy digital version.

Great sound for a short time

By stratcatj from NY,USA on January 9, 2011 Music Background: semi-pro

Had the amp 45 days and it smoked, been at the fender reair shop Dec.1st.......If this was a car it would be a lemon law case for sure...
