meh

By Matías from Buenos Aires

I was just looking for an octave pedal to loop bass lines. I never liked this one. tried it and left it aside real quick. also, I hate the micro usb app thing. I spend money in pedals because I don't like dealing with digital UIs. and I love playing guitar because, amongst other things, it doesn't need a stupid digital UI. so, yeah. wrong turn. the pedal sound is just not nice.

decent

By Duane
Music Background: acoustic guitar/bass

As a former bassist, I might be picky about latency. But as part of an acoustic duo, can't cover Marley w/o some low end. I think this is the best out there.

Perfect, does its job

By Zac C. from Slaughter, LA

Very simple pedal with big tone. 3 controls, sub-octave, dry-signal, octave-up. Sounds great and has a wide variety of options for tone. Very small size, fit right in a tight spot on the pedal board but made a huge difference to my clean tone. Two thumbs up.

Versatile compact pedal

By Lawrence M. from Jacksonville, Fl.
Music Background: Intermediate. Talented amateur.

There are a multitude of tonal variations this little unit can generate. On the clean side, you can dial in a sound similar to a harpsichord. Increase the gain and you can make it growl. Crank up the sub and you add a bottom like a bass guitar. Add the up side and you get more of an ethereal voice which it's hard to explain but if you get one and set it like that you will know what I mean. For such a small unit, you get a plethora of different tonal variations.

Okay for a moment and a space saver.

By Paul W. from Fuquay-Varina, NC
Music Background: Degreed professional musician studied Jazz, Blues, Reggae and other stuff.

I use pitchers/octavers/harmonizers frequently. I have 3 on my board. I bought this to save space on my board as a replacement for the big footprinted POG2. The POG2 bottom is much tighter. That is the main complaint. The +8 is okay but the POG2 does a better job of that for my set up. Overall, if you need something for a minute and need to conserve space, it's fine and reasonably priced.

The original but smaller and just as cool

By Matt F. from Saxapahaw, NC
Music Background: Lifetime Musician

Takes chords and multiple strings like it's nothing, works on bass guitar below low E, I play in drop A and it tracks pretty well all the way down that low. Octave up and down is clean, adjustable, and awesome.
I still haven't played with the software that connects to it and wonder if I even have to, because it's already awesome.

Exactly what I needed.

By Carlo B. from Alameda, CA
Music Background: bass player and vocalist

This pedal is perfect. It's the least expensive, tiny, solidly built, not noisy, easy to use and does exactly what it is supposed to do. I always though of octave pedals as toys to make weird sounds that I would never use live. Most online demos show octave pedals fully engaged which give this over the top three basses playing at the same time nonsense. I added a little upper 10% and lower octave 5% and kept the dry signal at 85% and it gave me a fuller sound without sounding like a space ship landing. Like most pedals, if you don't turn everything to 11 and use it with restraint it is a great addition.

Superb n' Up Mini Octave Pedal

By Don P. from Pensacola, FL
Music Background: Songwriter, Guitar Player, Musician, Home Recorder & Producer

Works extremely well and can't imagine anything more most guitar or bass players might want from a mini pedal like this one. There are many good choices of Octave Pedals in the market. Yet, if pedal board efficiency and ease of use are priorities, hard to fathom a better choice. Love the quick, simple, and 'tweakable' tones that can be dialed in with this little gem of a pedal. Whether using in full-on Octave mode or nominally to provide a bit of depth and resonance, or anywhere in between, the tones are really quite good. No discernible floor noise level that I could detect.

Awesome Sounds

By Rick F. from San Jose, CA
Music Background: Worship musician, producer, bassist and drummer

Wow, what a cool pedal. Tracks really well on bass, and the notes have no delay. This is so inspiring, I was looking for something to really standout and this is it.
Great pedal, great value and built like a tank. Yep, go ahead and get it.

sub n up mini

By Curtis T. from Dorset, VT

great pedal for great price. I had tried others and returned them. good compact size to boot. I went through the tone prints and stayed with the default. tone print cannot handle an active acoustic sound hole pickup, so I switched out to passive. that is the only issue I had. plenty of options for carving out sounds from organ to bass guitar to 12 string. very useful. grab it now before another shortage comes along.

Its good

By Suke from New York, NY
Music Background: professional guitar player

I love the idea of a mini pedal with an 8v up and 8v down with blend. My only complaint is that the octave lower is loose and floppy with a bit of latency. Its better than other pedals ive heard but I would love for it to be tighter. It adds more of a low end ambiance than an actual octave doubled.

Subnup Octave Pedal

By Wayne R.
Music Background: Rock, country, blues and more. Many years a player and singer.

I first saw this pedal and thought it only did an octave down but I've been looking for an octave up function so I kept reading. I was struck by how small this "mini" is, since pedal board space is always at a premium. the TC Electronic "TonePrint" functions I've appreciated in other of their pedals also got my attention. The ability to alter the function of the pedal with the editor is stellar.
The sound is good and holds up nicely with full and partial chords. The ability to blend the original signal, octave up and octave down really makes this very versatile for my intended uses.

Easy to use and takes little space

By Shawn from Tennessee
Music Background: Part-time gigging

Three knobs…..that's it. I've used it to create a bass tone that almost sounds real and a hammond b3 without ever owning one. Haven't messed with the tone print yet but I imagine it only adds to the creative possibilities!

Depends on what you play

By Sweetwater Customer from N Midwest
Music Background: Worship leader, recording

As an acoustic player, I was interested in fattening up the bass notes. After demoing this product, I have some observations. First, the dry signal adjustment did not have enough depth to cut the octave volume so that chords didn't sound muddy. Second, the sub adjustment did not work until the 10 o'clock position. At 9 o'clock I heard latency, and below that it sounded as if the pedal were on bypass. I'm guessing that electric players may not have an issue with this, but it doesn't work for fingerstyle acoustic. If you are looking for a highly adjustable octave pedal that can add a little fatness for solo acoustic with a high-pass filter [so that only E, A, D strings are processed], you will be disappointed and will need to wait for more Boss OC5 pedals to ship.

TC Electronics Sub N Up

By Styles B. from Fl
Music Background: Guitarist and songwriter for 45 years.

Nice inexpensive pedal that does what I need it to. Haven't used the Tone Print feature yet, but mixing the high and low octaves to taste can give you a big guitar sound. I use it with a Marshall DSL 40 and a Fulltone Deja Vibe 3 and get a growling Hammond B3 sound that's pretty good.
Be aware that the speaker on your amp works hard to hit the bottom octave.
So far it is a nice addition to my setup.

Subnup

Nice little device.... get some cool sounds out of it. I got it mainly for dive-bombing on the tremolo to get a deeper sound.
Very impressed with this Subnup pedal

Decent pedal, bad Toneprint experience

By Mark from Milford, MA

Sounded good out of the box, and in retrospect I should have just left it there. The problem starts with the fact that you are able to load Toneprints to this pedal that aren't really compatible with it - they are meant for the full-size Sub-N-Up pedal, but in the Toneprint app they are available under the Sub-N-Up Mini category. These presets employ the Sub 2 knob that the Mini doesn't have, so you can't directly control the parameters assigned to that knob. This also means that if you load a preset that was meant for the full-size unit and then try to go back to the default 'Poly' Toneprint, you might still hear artifacts from previously loaded Toneprints, presumably because the 'Poly' Toneprint doesn't properly override the parameters associated with the Sub 2 knob, along with some others (including modulation). The workaround for this is to edit the 'Poly' Toneprint, setting 'Wet Level Sub 2' to -100db (and turning off modulation if needed), saving it as a new preset, and loading it to the pedal.

Great Little Box

By Sid S. from Cleveland, OH

This little octave box is very versatile and super easy to use. Mini size takes up less space on your board too. Great price and arrived super fast as always. Thanks Sweetwater!

Not a bad little sub. Some settings make it a little robotic sounding but overall a good unit.

Great Sound, Outstanding Bang for the Buck

By Rob N. from Oregon
Music Background: Home recording hobbyist, guitar/bass for over 40 years

Bought this to add some serious low end to a mandocello I had recently acquired. The ability to balance the amount of direct and effected signal allows me to get just the right mix of power and bite. And being able to add a note one octave up is just gravy. This little box works perfectly, does just what it's supposed to do, and all at a very fair price.

Buy something else.

By Mark from MI

The upper octave on this was okay, but once I made the mistake of trying to use the TonePrint app, it rendered the pedal useless. One of the patches I "beamed" into the pedal (from my phone into the pickup - as instructed on the app) introduced a warbling, organ - like chorus, which could NOT be removed. I attempted to restore it to the so - called "Default" patch, only to discover (in an online forum) that some of the patches were set-up to work with the regular Sub n Up, and NOT with the mini, because it doesn't have enough knobs to control all parameters properly. When I attempted to beam less offensive patches into it, that annoying warble would NOT go away again. The end result is a totally useless pedal, once you infect it with the TonePrint presets. I am returning it immediately.

Tracks perfectly

By Joe from Mass
Music Background: GB guitar and bass player

Tracks perfectly. Solid tone. Not too synthetic. Top octave is great, but be careful with the low octave. It pushed my speaker too hard. I was hoping to use this to emulate a bass, but it's too boomy in that capacity. If you're a guitar player and need to play a bass line once in while, I highly recommend the Digitech Bass Whammy (it's a space hog but worth it), otherwise this a really solid octaver!

Grade: WOW-minus*

By Jon R. from Pennsylvania
Music Background: Guitar, 50+ years, acoustic & electric, 6 and 12-string.

I've only had mine for a few days, so I need to qualify my review by saying that I'm on a learning curve. Out of the box, I noticed that the USB cable promised in the packing list was missing. Not a very big deal. Then, after I plugged it in, I noticed that the default setting produced no discernable up-octave sound. Not a good start. The bass, however, was awsome (playing my acoustic 6 with a sound hole pickup).

Then I got down to business loading TonePrint on my phone and the TonePrint editor on my laptop. I tried some of the TC Electronic templates (Polyphonic Organ Generator, Sub Plotter, etc.) and was blown away by the capabilities of this little box. I'm looking forward to exploring it's capabilities and understand it'll take some time and effort.

One more thing, in the negative column... TCE's documentation is really crap, written and/or QC'd by morons. References to battery power, battery replacement, and switching from True Bypass to Buffered Bypass don't apply to the Mini version of the Sub-N-Up. Don't go looking for the battery compartment or dip switches on your Mini. They aren't any! I only wonder what else they forgot to mention.

subnup

By Sweetwater Customer

Well, I wanted a mini pedal, read the reviews, tried a few of them...and the TC subnup was clearly the winner. It sounded crisp, not "electronic", and did what it says it should do.

Accept no SUB-n-up-stitutes

By Jon from Texas
Music Background: 54 years of playing for fun, for money and more.

Exactly what I needed and wanted. I watched Mark Lettieri sharing about the gear on his pedalboard and he was using the Sub•n•up mini. I was instantly reminded of how much I loved the Boss Octave pedal I had 25 years ago (long gone) and the even greater option this TC pedal offered. You can be your own bass player, mimic a 12 string, get baritone low or create some synth like sounds with this pedal AND AT A GREAT LOW PRICE!!! No regrets, and I'll be adding another to my second pedalboard as well.

Fantastic pedal!

By Paul B. from MD
Music Background: Playing, composing, recording and performing

Disclosure: I have only had about one month's experience with an octave pedal. Recently, someone recommended that I incorporate the effect into some of my recording; I bought a cheap one just to try it out, realized that I liked what it could do, then bought the Sub 'N" Up Mini in order to have a better-performing effect. I chose the Mini over the larger version because of its simplicity; the larger one has a number of features in which I have no interest. The Sub 'N' Up Mini suits me perfectly and exceeded my expectations.
Its precise tracking enables the effect to function well even on fast runs and chords. The "sub" effect provides a good approximation of a bass guitar sound, and the "up" effect approximates a twelve-string sound. Using those two controls in conjunction with the "dry" control provides a wide range of tonal possibilities with various musical applications. This is the first TC Electronic pedal I've ever bought, and the design and construction are solid. I expect that this pedal will last forever and that -- in various settings -- it will be one of the most frequently engaged pedals on my board.

Better for guitar than bass

By Tom W. from Pittsburgh
Music Background: Anything but country

Pro:
- Truly polyphonic
- Great build quality
- Moron-level simple
- Nice price point
Con:
- Not enough volume on the upper octave for bass, imho... do not have this issue when I use it with guitar, though.

Overall, if you're looking for a Nano POG, but don't want to break the bank, and you're playing guitar (rather than bass), this is the pedal for you.

Perfect little octaver!

By Clark from Minnesota
Music Background: 20+ years

I use this for electric guitar and it"s perfect. Small size, it"s very well built, and has an easy to use layout. I"ll admit that I didn"t care for the sound that it produced the first time out of the box, but once I used the TonePrint feature I was quickly able to dial in any sound I wanted. It doesn"t add noise to my signal like other octaver pedals have. The Sub"N"Up Mini is a welcome addition to my pedalboard.

Sub n Up Mini Octave Pedal

By Rich from Edwardsville, Illinois

Great on Acoustic Guitar!

By Matt from Hawaii
Music Background: Hobbyist/Open Mic-ist

I got one of these mini Sub 'N' Ups (only needed the simple controls and small footprint) to put on my acoustic pedalboard so I could do basslines while looping. I figured if it didn't work, I could always add it to my electric pedalboard. I hadn't een anyone use a Sub N Up with an acoustic guitar, so I was a little hesitant, but it sounds great. My amp is less than ideal, but it sounds great with the Sub N Up Mini. I turn both the Dry and Up knobs all the way CCW and turn the Sub knob all the way Clockwise and it sounds like a real bass guitar. If you're on the fence like I was, take the plunge. It also sounds really good on electric guitar as well. As always, TC Electronic has blown me away and further backed up why most of my pedals are from them; they just sound great and are very reasonably priced!
