Squier Mini Stratocaster Electric Guitar - Black with Laurel Fingerboard Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Hardwood Body, Maple Neck, Indian Laurel Fingerboard, and 3 Single-coil Pickups - Black

The Squier Mini Stratocaster solidbody electric guitar makes a great instrument for beginners, younger players, and travelers. This 3/4-size guitar might look cute, but it’s also capable of becoming a tone monster when you plug it in. Like its big brother, the Squier Bullet, the Mini Strat uses three single-coil pickups, volume and tone controls, and 5-way pickup switching to give you an array of great sounds. It also includes a comfortable maple neck, an Indian laurel fingerboard, and a chrome-plated hardtail bridge. It’s perfect for smaller hands and sized just right for taking on the road.

I love this guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on January 5, 2024 Music Background: Hobbyist

I am a petite person with small hands, and I think that an adult electric guitar would be far too cumbersome. However, this mini electric is the perfect size for a petite adult or child. With this guitar I am able to achieve my dream of learning guitar at an affordable price. It is easy to handle, very cute, and fun to play. I would recommend it to anyone of any age.

Amazing guitar

I love this guitar. It plays like a dream, it is perfect for people with small hands, and sounds beautiful. It does tend to go out if tune, so make sure to tune every week.

Great 3/4 solidbody electric!

By Ray Futran from Rockville, MD on December 14, 2020 Music Background: Been playing guitar for 56 years.

This is for my 6 year old nephew who saw his uncle (me) playing electric guitar 3 years ago and has been chomping at the bit to get one.....well......now he's got one!
Well made, good value, and sized just right for his hands.

If you get a good one, it's a serious instrument for a kid

By Patrick from VA on December 6, 2020

These are very good instruments for the price, and come to think of it, good instruments period. The usual problems with Squiers are tuners that don't hold, nuts that bind, and pickups that sound thin, but on a very short scale guitar like this (22.75" scale length) the string tension is so low that these issues are almost invisible. The same low tension makes them easy to play for small hands and soft fingers. I have a seven year old who is charmed by his. I would caution you that the quality control on them is not terrific around the frets. Some have nice fretwork, some don't. But you are probably as well off buying them from Sweetwater as you are in person because you can be sure that the ones in any physical store have been picked over and what's left are the ones everyone else has rejected! Sweetwater won't send you a bad one.

Be aware that these are genuinely tiny. An adult male player, unless very short, will find them to be unusably small. Unlike some other smaller-scale guitars, these are too small to find a niche as a practice guitar for adults. But for a kid under the age of 12, especially a smaller kid, they are a great option. Also, they hold their price pretty well, so you can sell them later when the kid has grown up. If your kid is a bit bigger, though, buy the Duo Sonic with its 24" scale length, or a Jaguar or a full sized guitar.

My Son loves it!!

Excellent first guitar for learning to play.

Quality & Value

By TJ on March 19, 2020

Make no mistake, this Squire Mini Strat V2 is not a low quality child's toy! Yes, it's easy and fun to play. It's considerably easier to play than a more expensive full-size (25.5 scale) Fender Strat and the Mini sounds just as good.

The Mini Strat features quite low string action. The .009-.042 gauge strings are comparatively gentle on the fingers. It's perfect for those who prefer to play with a relatively effortless or lighter touch.

The tone and sound quality is absolutely beautiful, providing plenty of good solid bass and bight clear mid/treble. Surprisingly, the frets required no filing, but could use a little fine smoothing/polishing. Moreover, I've not experienced any difficulty keeping it in tune. Although, I have tuned it down from standard tuning to D-A-D-G-A-D.

The Mini Strat has exceeded my expectations. Definitely a bargain for the price. Well packaged and very fast shipping. Sweetwater's customer service is second to none!

Great choice for my grandson's first electric guitar - Squire Mini Stratocaster

By Don from Delaware on October 19, 2021 Music Background: Playing guitar for 56 years

My grandson enjoys trying to play my full size acoustic and smaller hollow-body electric but at 6 years old the necks are too big for his hands and my stings are not light enough for him. He loves to sit at his mom's piano and at his own small size real drum kit and play what ever comes to his mind. He asked his mom for a real guitar like pop pop's for Christmas and this was just the ticket. I order a Black Squire Mini Stratocaster (also comes in red and pink) from Sweetwater and had it in five days. The order process and delivery was top notch as always. I unpacked the guitar, plugged it in, and tuned it up. I had so much fun with it that I played it for an hour. Next step is to order him a Fender Champ 20. I can't wait to see his smile at Christmas and help him learn to play his own real electric guitar. The cool thing is that this 3/4 size Strat look alike looks almost identical to Eric Clapton's famous "Blackie." I printed out a picture of Eric with Blackie and put it in with his little Squire. Hey, Quinn Sullivan started playing at 4 years old so 6 is old enough to start.

Can be a great little guitar with some work

By Sweetwater Customer from Tucson on September 26, 2022 Music Background: hobbyist

I'm happy with this guitar, but it was not playable out of the box. I took it to a reputable local guitar shop and had the tuners upgraded, the strings replaced with 11s, and the guitar set up properly. They had to do a lot of work at the nut. But I ended up with a very nice little guitar for a total amount of money that was quite reasonable.

For kids, you might replace the strings with 10s. With 11s I can only bend a half-step.

I am a small adult woman with health issues that make a full-weight/scale guitar too challenging. This guitar weighed 5.68 pounds.

If you buy this guitar and can't get it to sound decent or stay in tune, don't return it, take it to a real guitar shop for a professional setup.

Great beginner guitar for children

By Roger Radcliff on November 27, 2020

Great beginner guitar for my four year old son, as a guitar repair guy did some nice minor mods and this thing rocks, it did come from Sweetwater set up nice though. Rounded the fingerboard edges, smoothed the fret ends and lowered the nut slots. This thing played like butter!

Great choice for a travel guitar

By Dave from ft myers on September 26, 2019 Music Background: Professional musician

Just as I expected. Nice hard tale bridge, good action and fun to play. Not necessarily a toy, this baby has full sized Squire tone and quality. I also bought the fender gig bag, excellent choice if you plan on traveling or just keeping your guitar clean and scratch free. I was pleasantly surprised in the quality of the guitar and gig bag.

Wow

By Sweetwater Customer on July 9, 2021 Music Background: 10 plus

First off am thank you Sweetwater for your awesome service.

Problem: Horrendous intonation and guitar would not stay in tune. I had same issue after receiving a replacement. After taking it to GC For a setup it turned out much better but tuning the G chord is still a problem. Don't understand why the 5 stars nor why this is not being looked at. I see the 5 stars and even viewed videos on YouTube without complains. Go figure.

Bottom line I would not buy again.
