These are going on all my guitars

By Mark from Tampa, FL

These are objectively better than naked strap buttons. Are they better than other strap locks? I don't know. I bought one set of these and loved them. Now I'm three sets deep with one more set on the way.

Don't be fooled by the rest...

By Michael H. from PLANO, TX

Years ago I bought a set of Strap Locks for my Stratocaster from a company called, Walker and Williams. They looked and worked like Schallers but were a little cheaper. Yesterday I replaced them with these Schallers. Install was the same wither way.. I mean, you just unscrew the existing locks or buds and screw these in..It's just that easy, took maybe 5 min.

The Walker and Williams worked but the strap locks were loose compared to the Schallers: They rattled a little when you moved. They felt safe, but I decided to replace them after I got a set of Schallers for my Telecaster and could feel the difference in the quality.

Now, I need a gold set for my Gretch G5420TG-59 (it was a Sweetwater exclusive in Vintage Orange, beautiful) Gold Schallers will be perfect!

Legit upgrade

By Ryan from Oakland, CA
Music Background: Studio owner, pro musician for 30 years

This new design is a legit upgrade over the previous generation. The thumb screw is way easier to deal with than the former nut was, and the set screw makes sure that everything stays tight- a belt and suspenders approach. I am going to retrofit all of my band's guitars, which will add up, but it's worth it.

Required allen key not supplied.

By Brian O. from NIANTIC, CT

First off...I'm 55 years old and have been using Schaller Strap locks for as long as I can remember. EVryguitar I own (and it's more than just few) have Schaller Strap locks. It used to be an elegant simple desing. Now it requires a 3mm allen key for thr starp button and it is not included. Most people DO NOT have a 3mm allen key. The average guitar playerMIGHT have a 4mm allen key for truss rod adjustments on import guitars or small allen keys for saddle adjustments. Not only that but sometimes when you would install a Scaheller strap lock the provided screw will NOT work and you need to use the original strap button screw. You can not do this now because the strap button "allen" screw is captive in the button. If that allen screw strips you're finished. They took a simple design and made it overly complicated and it now requires what any normal person would sonsider a "special" tool. I assume the change was made because you could by Schaller "knock offf" from Grover and a few other brands....maybe a patent ran out? The Schallers were still much better, made from stronger metals and only a little more expensive than the knock offs.

I will no longer be using Scahller Strap Locks because frankly forcing me to use a special allen key that is not provided is a kivk in the nuts. I'll try the D'addarios or Dunlops or any of the many brands that offer strap locks.

The Schaller owner did me a solid!

By Pat T. from Franklin, CT
Music Background: Starving for non-musical talent reasons...

I made the mistake of buying a set of the nickel Shaller strap locks at a local Guitar Center store. They just looked interesting.

About a week later I took them out to take a better look, and found that unsurprisingly the staff had popped them open probably curious and played with them, but when they put them back in the clear case, they forgot to include a set screw that had fallen out.

For those who don't know, there is a very tiny set screw that, while they say isn't needed, keeps the round collar that secures the strap to the strap portion of the lock (hard to find good words for these things) from rotating loose. Even if it was loose, there's no way your strap would come off of these amazing latches.

I knew they were from Germany, and with no other recourse, I wrote to the company using the regular web form. I got a reply back from the owner of the company, asking that I send him some pictures because I guess my description was pretty bad of what the issue was.

After I sent the pictures, and they really responded fast considering the time zone difference, they confirmed that they should have had a set screw in them. Before anything else happened, I wrote to them thanking them profusely for at least confirming that a part was missing, and I asked if they just tell me the kind of metal rod, you know diameter and thread pitch, I should be able to have one made or make one in my shop. I was very clear in stating that the postage from Germany would make it prohibitively expensive, but if that was the only route I was perfectly fine paying the postage.

I didn't hear anything until a day or so ago, when I got this package in the mail, and what do you think was in it?

The owner had actually sent me some set screws, I guess he thinks I'm really clumsy because there's quite a few, and even two of their medium picks!

I must remind you here that I was adamant about paying for any postage, even though it was a small package. I did not demand or ask that they send me anything.

Guess who is a scholar customer for life?

Basicaly one of the better options out there

By George C. from NY
Music Background: look me up on Youtube George Covetskie VIDEOS

Ok, Had these on my P-bass for 10 years and they were the older version, ever so slightly loose but held everytime.
These new versions are a little better. They seem to be more solid between the parts yet allows full freedom for guitar to swing at the meeting slot.
The Only Thing that pissed me off was that these new one's have the Set Screw to keep the nut from backing off the thred. That part works But The Allen Wrench was not in the Kit.
I had to dig out an Allen wrench small enough to fit the screw.
Did it, done and they are on now.
I think these are an improvement from the earlier versions. I recommend them.

New design is not an improvement

By Sweetwater Customer

I had a pair of these installed on an SG from years ago. At some point I lost the strap that had my locks on it, so I bought these as a replacement. I cannot figure out for the life of me why they would integrate the button and the screw together. It is much better to use the original screw that came with the guitar. Luckily the locks still fit the old button (with a little bit of play, so I kept them and used the old screws/buttons, but I really do not like the new integrated screw/button design. If I had known I probably would have bought something else.

The Straplock I Didn't Know I was Missing

By Beau S. from Marengo, IL
Music Background: Weekend warrior

Finally a design that checks all the boxes. I ha e used a similar style of lock for years, but even as my preferred lock it always had a couple of pet peeves. This Schaller is Super easy to install. The threaded posts that go through the strap are actually long enough to accommodate the thickness of a typical guitar strap, unlike other similar models. No more wrestling to get a skinny hex nut onto a thread that barely sticks out enough from the strap. I like that there is a set screw to (hopefully) hold the nut in place as well. I can't speak to durability just yet, but just from a design standpoint this is exactly what I was missing and I quickly ordered 3 more.

Best Strap Locks Ever Made

By Mike T. from ESCANABA, MI
Music Background: 65 yrs old from the motor city, 51 years of guitar, played in bands, some experience ;

Saw someone say the old ones were inadequate, and thats a laugh. I`m still using some I bought 25 years ago, and they work as great today as they ever did. I actually wondered why they changed them, I never had any problems with the old nut/washer design ( once in a while had to tighten a little)and Ive used some thick straps. Bought a new LP though and it deserved some nickel ones to match the trim vs. the old gold ones I have that Ive been using, along with a new padded strap. I will say the new nuts are a nice feature replacing the washer and nut. The old locks still fit onto the new buttons, glad to see that. But the coolest thing is the ramp cut on the lock peg. Just line the strap end up with the button on the guitar and give it a tiny pull and it just slides and locks right on. I had to wonder if there was enough peg left with the ramp to lock on as good as the old ones, but they are really secure. That is super cool. I never had a problem pulling the button to lock the old ones on, but the new slide/lock on design is a winner. Your only gonna have to buy 1 set of these for the life of your guitar, great product. You`ll have to punch the hole in your strap a little bigger to fit right. Hands down better than the push button styles. Heres a pic of the new ones, and a shot of the 25 yr old ones.

I was a Schaller fan

By Jonathon W. from PLANO, IL
Music Background: long time neighbor hater

These are garbage. I've been playing since '92, been using Schaller strap locks since high school. The moment I took these buttons out, I knew these are bad. Cast aluminum now vs the old steel design. The only good thing over the old design, is the longer threads on the lock side for the strap. But cast alum everything on these? And the screws cross thread on modern and vintage Les Pauls(1999, and 2021), Jacksons(1992), vintage(1989) Charvels. Avoid these. Get the Gotoh version, and Dimarzio strap screws(they are longer). They've been hanging around Fender too long. Dunlop's are pretty good too. The Gibson strap buttons are superior to these, since the screws are the correct threads. With steel screws too.

They Suck

By Randy H.

I have used Schaller strap locks my entire life. The old style locks worked great. The S lock sucks. The pin doesn't fit into the button so it never locks and occasionally the strap pops off and luckily I've been able to catch my guitar. I will NEVER buy their strap locks again!

Their best product yet!

By Robert from Florida
Music Background: Experienced

I swapped these out for my old Schaller Strap Locks. I had started experiencing shoulder pain and had to get 3" wide leather straps, which help a lot with shoulder pain. My original Schaller strap locks weren't really adequate for the job, and I almost dropped my guitar in worship. So when I saw these, I immediately got three sets. This is a vast improvement. First, the button for your guitar is one piece, and hex head, which means it's easier not to strip out. Second, the beefy lock ring and longer spline mean I can use my thick Boss leather guitar straps without cutting them up. Third, the locking screw keeps that sucker secure. Fourth, the guitar buttons have felt pads. So this immediately felt way better, and was a heck of a lot more secure.

The Schallers are meant to replace your own buttons. That's NOT a design flaw. That's an improvement. Now if you want to swap back to the originals if you uninstall the Schallers, you can do that. The included buttons that had built-in screws (not separate) screwed in with confidence, and tightly.

I am very, very pleased with these. Definitely five stars!

Where have you been all my life

By Randy from North Carolina
Music Background: Weekend warrior and builder

After researching and reading tons of strap lock reviews I decided to give these a shot and am I glade I did. I've tried a couple of other brands/designs but never felt very good about them. Most of the reviews for these were so good I ordered a set for each of my guitars. I absolutely love them and doubt I will ever try or use anything else. They are very well made and lock your guitar strap on solid. I am very confident that my instrument is safe from a fall using these.

Can't use your own screws

By Sweetwater Customer

Unlike the classic Schaller strap locks, the screw is integrated with the post. This means there is no way to use the stock screw from your guitar with this. To get the "ultimate" Schaller lock, you end up needing a set of classic Schallers just for the post, your stock screw, and then a set of these new ones for the superior lock design. This is what I did, and I'm very happy with the result - it's just an expensive solution.

One screw size

By Steve from Florida

These new design of these strap locks only come with one screw size and it is larger then what most guitar manufacturers use in their strap buttons. So once you screw these in you will not be able to put your old strap buttons back on without filling the holes. I have many guitars and all I've ever used is schaller strap locks but I think these were a bad idea.

Schaller Strap Locks

As I've just read in several other reviews, the securment nut that threads on top of the strap will unscrew and fall off. I was at practice the other day and I looked down to find that it had fallen right off! I make sure to tighten everything down well when its holding my guitars too.

Not a Fan of the New Design

By Andrew K. from Norwood, NJ

As the title states, I was expecting the original Schaller Strap Locks, but was then, unpleasantly, surprised by the fact that they came out with a new design. Personally, I preferred the older model because it kept your strap on and was easy to remove from the guitar. I bought these to put on my Fender Coronado II Bass Reissue. It could be that since the strap lock on the neck side is placed in an odd spot, I had trouble attaching and detaching the strap lock from the bass itself. In addition, I was not expecting the screw to have a hexagonal shaped end. Luckily, I had the right tool to install it, but I really don't see the point of changing from a Phillips head.

The fact of the matter is that they work and get the job done. However, these just weren't for me. I'll be looking to buy the Grover Strap Locks next time as they're closer to what I was looking for.

The Standard

By James R. from Hurleyville, NY

Whether I install these nickel strap locks, the chrome or gold ones, Schaller Security Strap Locks are my go-to. They install easily and require almost no maintenance. Once a year I'll spray a minute amount of DW-40 in the U-shaped fitting (the piece that goes on the strap) but that's it for maintenance. Otherwise and across the board these strap-locks are not only strong but also both handsome and utterly reliable.

Schaller is the way to go not only for easy on-off guitar straps, but also for the security, knowing that your guitar strap will not slip off during a show. Screw to small= they come loose.
Bottom line= they mite work on a PRS, using the PRS screws! But that's it-they just come loose.

These are FANTASTIC!

By K2 from York, PA
Music Background: 7-yrs gigging musician/ singer/ songwriter

PERFECT solution to a guitar strap on which the leather eyelets have become a bit loose. Super simple to change out the old pegs and to install these. Took me 5 minutes. The security of not having to constantly check my strap every time I put it on is a relief-- I can switch between instruments (keyboards and bass) between songs and have one less thing to think about during a gig or practice.

They're beautiful, functional, easy to install and use, and don't stand out noticeably. For the price, these are a steal. It would be a no-brainer if strap manufacturers would just include these kinds of locks with all their straps in the first place.

Perfect swap for Gretsch bass

By Steve J. from Fairfax, VA

I bought a Gretsch bass that had the knurled strap retainers. I found them to be annoying, so I wanted to swap them for strap locks and since Gretsch installs Schaller on some of their guitars, this seemed like a logical choice. I was afraid that the screw would be a different diameter and that I would have to modify the bass. Nope... it was exactly the same size. Perfect and simple swap.

Great Strap Locks!

By GuitarGirl from Colon, MI

I have these strap locks on both my Fender Strat and Fender bass. Before I purchased them I looked at others and these were the highest recommended so I decided to give them a try. They are extremely sturdy and I like that you have to intentionally pull up on the locking mechanism in order to release them, unlike the Dunlop ones that you press in in order to release. I know of an incident where someone had the Dunlop ones and accidentally bumped the release button on the lock against something while playing live and the lock released and the guitar fell to the floor causing damage. Though it's not likely to happen, just the fact that it did was enough for me to choose the Schaller ones instead. The only thing that I don't like and it is minor, is that sometimes the washer wants to loosen but it has never loosened enough to cause a problem. I just always make sure they are tight when I put my strap on and I'm good to go. That is the only reason I didn't give this a 5 star rating.

I do not know why I waited so long to put these on. I wrongfully thought that these would somehow change the look of my new, beautiful Stat. Wrong, wrong, wrong. They have no aesthetic change whatsoever. The only effect is one in which your guitar becomes protected.

These are simple to install and are non-marring. My guitar feels so secure hanging from its strap now. Really, I've got no complaints and I am usually able to come up with some type of complaint.

These are the worst design possible.

By Don
Music Background: 25 year player

Be warned. If you are going to use these make sure you use a little locktite on the ends of the plungers. They unscrew very easily. Without he little tip on the end the the plunger falls inside and it is extremely difficult to retrieve the plunger and to remove the lock. The little ball on the end is designed to screw onto the plunger on the outside. I am done with these. Check the internet. There are a lot of people who have had the same problem.

Strap Locks are great but...

By Ohiofan1989 from Athens, Ohio

You can't go wrong with these locks so if you need them, buy them. What I don't like is that I needed a cheap set of locks and saw these listed for what I thought was $10.99. (I'm going to come right out and say it.) When clicking on the product it read "as low as $10.99" when you buy three sets and while I know Sweetwater does this regularly...it's annoying. The actual price for one set was $14.99. If you have ever heard of a "bait and switch" that is a tactic that new users of this site need to get used to. I don't like it.

one of the best - but needs an update

By Nigel G. from NYC and Bahrain
Music Background: Live sound, hobby musician + audio dealer

I'm an engineer, with 12 guitars. Straplocks ARE essential, but...
a) body screw threads too shallow, not same as many original threads, they mash internal screw thread routing, so can loosen or pull-out.
Eg. wood dust and superglue, or re-use original screws if possible, but most original screw heads are too wide: Schaller posts need drilling for both shank and countersink = messy/dangerous.
b) diameter of Schaller thread for washer and locking nut on strap:
too wide - stretches leather, necessitating messy trimming
too short - locknut turnable only once on thick leather (then loosens?!)
c) only black screws!
In brief: Schaller posts should be remodelled to accept original screws.

one of the best - but needs an update

By Nigel G. from NYC and Bahrain

Can't Imagine not using Schaller Security Strap Locks

By Bruce R. from Fredericksburg, VA
Music Background: Hobbyist

I've seen too many "close calls" when someone's strap slips off the strap bolt. To me, strap locks are a no-brainer. And installing Schaller Strap locks is also a no-brainer. If you love your guitar, (and you know you do) protect it with Schaller locks. (No, I don't work for Schaller and yes, I have Schaller locks on all my straps.) Highly recommended.

the best strap lock

By Matt L. from Carrollton Ga

This is my first strap lock pair, but based off of the feel, if I get another guitar, I will get another pair. Have them on my 2008 Gibson Les Paul Studio and these things are awesome! No need to drill any holes or anything. Someone told me that I had to drill holes in the guitar, wrong, didn't do it. wouldn't do it on my Gibson anyway

Perfect Staplocks

By william d. from chiefland, FL
Music Background: Struggling musician

Perfect fit for my Gibson Les Paul. No modifications needed. Screws were identical to the stock Gibson screws.

they work great, should be standard on nice guitars

By kdog from northern plains

I no longer worry about dropping my les paul. I love the peace of mind of having such a secure connection to the guitar. If you ever watch any of your guitars fall when you did not put on the strap right, you know what I am talking about.

I wish Gibson would have these factory for what we pay for there guitars!

Very Secure Protection for That Favorite Guitar

By Dave S. from Richmond, Indiana
Music Background: Played in a band for 21 years. have played solo the last 13 years

I have used Schaller Straplocks on a number of different electric guitars over the years, including Gibson Les Paul Customs, and they have always stayed securely locked until I released them to take the strap off the guitar.

I consider them a "MUST HAVE" accessory for an electric guitar. When I purchase a new electric guitar I have Schaller Straplocks installed immediately.

Think of them as "INSURANCE" against dropping that favorite guitar because the strap slipped off of the strap button.

The best

By Larry from Lakeview Ohio
Music Background: Musican

Started using these about a year ago. I don't believe I'll be using any other unless they come out with something that just blows these away!

Great stuff but...

By Atsuhiko from Brooklyn, NY

I expected felt pad for guitar body would come with this set but not. I think it should. Although I admit that the product itself is great!

WOW Should have put these on YEARS AGO

By Joe K. from United States
Music Background: Worship Leader, Musician, Song Writer

I began having trouble with my strap slipping off my Les Paul Custom. I put a set of these on and the strap becomes part of the guitar.

The buttons sit very secure little cups and also lock in place with a satisfying spring loaded click. On the strap side the piece actually bolts on to your strap, and it doesn't matter how tight you make the bolt in fact the tighter the better. The button fits so well that the guitar swings easily and allows even more freedom of movement than if you connected the strap directly to the guitar.

From now on these are a must with every guitar purchase along with a case, capo and a strap. It is piece of mind you can buy.

What a neat invention!

By Bill H. from Warsaw, IN USA
Music Background: Picked up my first guitar in 1964 and am still playin'.

I wish someone would have told me about these years ago. We all live in fear of having a strap slip off a guitar. These things solve the problem. They lock up like a brick and can't shake loose, but can be removed by a two year old. Switch strap to another guitar in seconds. Awesome product.

schaller strap locks wear & unhook

By Ed from Iowa
Music Background: guitarist 25 years

purchased locks, I don't change straps much but don't want strap to come off and break my guitar neck ! But locking pin is very short in lock and end has worn round and pops off very easily and unsuspectingly . I was able to catch it but has happened often enough to make me remove it . Pin is not sticking but has worn round and will not stay locked. Dunlap locks are the best or Ernie Ball .

Shaller Security Strap Locks

By Carl from Orlando/Tampa
Music Background: Been playing for about 40 years and can still crank it up loud.

I have used these for dozens of years and I have them in nickel, chrome, and gold. Even the gold ones still look new. Excellent plating on all three.

I have always prefered these because some strap locks have a push button instead of a pull like the Shallers. That means that if you bump into something, it could come loose, but not the Shallers.

I see no reason to switch to anything else. All the ones I have still work perfectly after tons of use.
