Hughes & Kettner StompMan Guitar 50-watt Amplifier Pedal Reviews

1-ch, 50W Pedalboard Amplifier Head with Footswitchable Solo Function and FX Loop

If you're anything like the Sweetwater guitarists who buck the backbreaking heads and cabs in favor of convenience without tonal compromise, the Hughes & Kettner StompMan guitar amplifier pedal is fully prepared to serve as the centerpiece of your rig. Though sized to fit easily on most pedalboards, the StompMan's tone is nothing short of massive, with up to 50 watts on tap to serve you well in both studio and stage situations. Familiar amp controls like Gain, Presence, Resonance, and Tone fine-tune your sound to perfection, with a Sagging control front and center to adjust compression and overtone levels to taste. When it's time to bust out that searing solo, a built-in boost in the form of a Solo footswitch adds up to 6dB of gain in an instant. For all-tube tone at your feet, consider Hughes & Kettner's StompMan Guitar Amplifier Pedal for your next live performances!

This Is The Best Amp !!!

By Sweetwater Customer

Finally, I have what I need ..just like that, that simple.
this thing Rocks with just the right touch of 18volt boost.

the trick is, to tweak your boost and the Sag control together.
like put the sag where you want it, and bring up the boost until you hear it come to a pinnacle sound, ( it will get worse again with too much boost ) .... but you get it in that sweet spot, where the boost is working with the sag, instead of against it, and it sounds as good as any tube amp: Certainly at this price.

Dead after 5 tries

By Theodore D. from Burbank, CA

This item is OK - not more than that - while it works. Mine died after 5-6 tries, doesn't even power up. My intention was to use it as a practice tool, and have done so a few times. After sitting on a shelf for about a year this pedal went belly up. I'll try to choose better next time.

OK while it works

By Sweetwater Customer

The amp is OK for a little solid state gizmo, basic functionality without many features.
Mine died after using it a few times, doesn't even power up. Moving on I will spend my money elsewhere.

Gets the job done and then some

By Jeffrey O. from WESTON, MA

It sits in a corner of my pedal board. I run it into a 2x8 cab (which I built and wired myself and can switch between parallel and series) and it has so much power and range. Plugged into a 4x12 at 4ohm it rattles my house. It has volume.

Sparkling cleans, wonderful crunch, the ability to fine tune tone, crunch, sag, etc. just beautiful.

I'm planning on a second to play with stereo. Need to build out my shop first so I can build a second cab.

Too Noisy for me

By Tall T. from Portland, Oregon
Music Background: Songwriter and performer

I tried two of these units and the background noise (hissing) was too much for me. Unlike a tube amp noise when turned up, this is an unpleasant electrical noise. This is especially noticeable when using the preamp. Presence should have been labeled Hiss. I did like the power output and ability to shape the sound. Perhaps an updated model will deal with the hiss.

Sounded great..while it lasted

By Sweetwater Customer

Used the StompMan for 3 days. I was impressed with the sound, however on the fourth day, the volume went out.

Awesome

Love it
Now to upgrade
Sweet water needs an upgrade program if we buy from one distributor and want to move up in their same product line, customers should have 90 days to do so
Gives them plenty of time to truly use the product
I love the Stompman and only wish I had purchased the Ampman

Very impressed

By JMK2112 from San Diego
Music Background: Thrash metal

I've always wanted a decent sounding pedal sized power amp for my preamp pedals; but this is so much more. First of all, I'm running a 4ohm cab, so I'm getting all 50 watts. Definitely enough power. The amp itself has sagging, presence and resonance for a genuine tube-like feel. Besides that, you can put preamps/ overdrives in front (bypassing the preamp with a switch in back, which is awesome), and an effects loop for my delay. All of this fits on a small pedalboard too! I can't wait to use this live! Lastly, Sweetwater's customer service was awesome as always as well.

Adding something to my review: how to get SRV tones from Stompman

By Michael from Los Angeles, CA

In addition to my earlier review, allow me to add that diming the sagging control is crucial in one important aspect: you get the Duelist / SRV vibe in spades! Lower the Sag and gain from to 9 o'clock to noon for bells and chime (very reminiscent of my '65 Princeton I used to practice on years ago.). None of the YT reviews mentions that about the sagging. (I have the Duelist. The Stompman, depending on the settings, sits somewhere between the String Singer and the Heavy hand when the Sag is dimed.) Use a buffer when in SRV mode to get that extra zing from Stompman.

I am saving now for another...it's outrageous that I can go from Princeton to SRV powerhouse at this give away price. And then, they allow you to cut off the preamp for a top drawer petal platform as a free feature. Clearly H&K want to own the floor amp space. The Ampman threw down the gauntlet; The Stompman drew out the long knives. It's lights out for the competition. Buy one and I dare you to refrain from writing a five star!

Excellent pedal platform with tube-like chime

By Michael from Chatsworth, CA

Compared to the EHX Howitzer, the Stompman is much brighter and chimey with single coils and a much beefier power amp (when turning off the preamp to the Stompman). The Stompman sounds very much like a Fendery/Voxy kind of thing when used with the preamp, with their own signiture vibe predominating. Great amp sound. Compared to the EHX 55 mm power amp, the Stompman when used as a power amp sounds much more like an all tube power amp rack. Same with the Mooer Baby bomb. The Stompman makes distortion pedals sound much more amplike than these other two.The Mooer is more like the EHX 55mm, only louder. Moreover, Neither the Mooer nor the EHX 55 mm sound bright and chimey when single coils are played through them. Compared to the H&K Classic Vibe, they are close when the preamp is used with the Stompman, but the Stompman's ability to turn off the preamp makes it sound SOOO much better when used as a power amp for pedals. The H&K Ampman Metal version really is a powerhouse. Great cleans and great versatile metal tones. However, no ability to use it as a pedal platform because the preamp is always on. It's a tossup really because the Ampman is so good sounding and versatile (I would believe the same for the classic version.).

If you have lots of pedals and want an amazing power amp with true tube like backbone, along with the rare ability to sound nice and chimey with single coil guitarts, then the Stompman is a much better pick than the EHX Howitzer and 5mm and the Mooer baby bomb. For a little more, it makes the H&K Classic vibe mini amp obsolete. If you don't care about pedal power, the Ampman rules!

Just my two cents. FYI I have been playing these devices through the Vintage 30, The V-Type, the ManOWar, the CV-75, and the British version of the GT-75. H&K Stompman and Ampman rule. nuff said.
