Squier Affinity Starcaster - Candy Apple Red Reviews

Semi-hollowbody Electric Guitar with Maple Top, Back, and Sides, Maple Neck and Fingerboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Candy Apple Red

The Squier Affinity Starcaster is descended from the infamous Starcaster that debuted in 1976. Made from laminated maple, the body is contoured for comfort and creates a mellow attack. The Starcaster has a unique two-tiered headstock design that is only found on the Starcaster models, oozes cool, and guarantees that you'll stand out on stage. This axe doesn’t just look good: its awesome tone comes from a pair of Squier Standard humbucking pickups that you can control with the master volume and master tone knobs. This affordable semi-hollow guitar will wow you with its fat sound and impressive sustain. Featuring multiple classic finishes, the Squier Affinity Starcaster is the ultimate choice between awesome semi-hollow tones and vintage good looks.

100% Satisfaction

By Ray from Victoria, TX on September 25, 2021 Music Background: Amateur (for 54 years now)... :-)

I've been drawn visually to maple neck guitars for years - and generally, I seem to prefer them to rosewood or other types of fret boards. I was looking for a Gibson style E-335 style and ran across the Starcaster - which I vaguely remember from the '70's. Fender currently isn't making them, but Squire is. The maple neck drew me in as did the double humbuckers. The guitar arrived a couple hours ago and this is the 1st break I've taken since un-boxing it. First of all, it's beyond me why anyone would buy a guitar online from anyone other than Sweetwater. They know how to ship a guitar so it arrives undamaged. Kudos... I love the fact that it was checked at Sweetwater and re-boxed. There's not a flaw on the guitar, nor damage. Surprisingly, I didn't even have to tune it. It stayed in tune from the time Sweetwater tested it until I received it. It plays really well, sounds fantastic and looks just as fantastic. My wife appreciated the Bit-o-Honey too... :-)

The workhorse

By Brian Hulstrom from Western Kentucky on December 20, 2019 Music Background: 28 years playing guitar

I bought this guitar for my daughter as her first new guitar, she was beyond excited when it came in, and has been putting in a staggering amount of hours on it.I picked it up and was presently surprised at the tones i was able to get out of it. from country to metal i never had any problem getting it to voice what i wanted it to sound like. I ordered the full set-up with it and it arrived literally ready to hit the stage and in full tune.
The service I received was industry leading, I got callbacks in a very short amount of time and all my questions and concerns were addressed on the spot and with non-confusing answers. I was taken care of above and beyond what i expected. I wont be going anywhere else for all my needs.

Squier Affinity Starcaster

By Sweetwater Customer on December 27, 2022

I bought this Squier Affinity Starcaster because the Classic line was not appealing aesthetically. I thought I'd really prefer the control layout and pickups in that line, but I knew I wouldn't make a connection based on the offered finishes. I had some doubts regarding the Affinity after watching mixed reviews until one reviewer pointed out that at this price you could just view this as a "project guitar". Anyway, I bought it with that attitude and the knowledge I could just return it to SW if it was not acceptable.

So glad I bought it. This is one sexy beast of a guitar. It plays very well and the pickups are quite good. I saw a review claiming the volume/tone didn't do much, but that's not the case. You can dial in the jangle or silky smooth jazzy type tones and all points in between.

Will I upgrade it? Most probably, I'll likely put in dual controls plus a coil-split, black covered HBs, and black metal control knobs. Regardless of that, this thing is an awesome value, it's a pleasure to play, and a real looker.

If you're looking for something a little different, then definitely give this a go. Also, this would be a great guitar for any beginner. It won't break the bank and you're not going to buy some poorly made instrument that might stifle your passion.

Side note: You can't really tell from most photos I've seen, but the red finish has metallic flake. It's really beautiful.

No complaints...

By Frank Schaffer from Baltimore MD on February 16, 2022 Music Background: Playing 50+ years...

Only my second ever from a store instrument. All my previous guitars have been second hand or maybe pawn shop acquisitions.my other store bought was a beautiful Telecaster deluxe... Mom bought it in 73 for my birthday. Got the hard she'll case with it too. All totaled it cost her 450 bucks. Worth almost 3 grand today. Unfortunately I sold it only a few years after she got it. So this is my second as I said. I am extremely pleased with everything about this great guitar. Finish is perfect, as are the frets and intonation. Stays tuned like it should. The 09 strings seem to be the right choice on this guitar so I will stick with them. Got the tweed gator case. Lots protection but not a custom fit although the guitar is well protected in every respect. Delivery was less than a week. Customer service as always was and is superb. If you want a great inexpensive guitar that will fill just about any need you may have this is it. I give it 4.5 stars because nothing is perfect.

Nice guitar

By Michael J from MI on October 3, 2023 Music Background: 20 years amateur player

This was really setup nice out of the box. It is very comfortable to play. The pickups aren't the best and the switches could be upgraded too. But I love the satin neck. For the price it is a great guitar.

Great Bargain

By Sweetwater Customer on August 5, 2022

This is a fantastic guitar for the money. The overall build was really nice and just needed a few items polished up on the setup to get it playing just as it should. It came decently setup from Sweetwater. When I got the guitar it just needed the action lowered and truss rod slightly tweaked. I did have to polish the frets because they were pretty scratchy. Still a great deal even if you had to pay someone 70$ for a quality setup. My only complaint is the tuning machines and the pickups. The pickups are pretty awful to be fair and have very low mid range output. The tuning machines work but they just aren't as smooth as they should be
