ESP LTD Bill Kelliher Sparrowhawk Electric Guitar - Vintage Silver Sunburst Reviews
The LTD Bill Kelliher Sparrowhawk from ESP comes generously equipped and primed for performance. Co-designed by Mastodon co-axeman Bill Kelliher himself, this offset-body axe slings gracefully over the shoulder and sits comfortably on the lap. Its maple-capped mahogany body delivers a taste of that timeless '50s/'60s-era dual humbucker guitar tone. Meanwhile, its thin "U" mahogany neck with an ebony fingerboard offers stellar playability and response. Tonally, a pair of Bill's signature Mojo Tone Hellbender humbuckers unleash a duality spanning raw, raucous riffing to surprisingly lush and glassy cleans. A TonePros Locking Tune-o-matic bridge and a set of LTD locking tuners ensure singing sustain and rock-solid tuning. In short, the LTD Bill Kelliher Sparrowhawk is built for sound, and its unique offset design is built for hours of comfortable play onstage.

An Excellent Instrument
After a bit of time debating whether to get this version or the single-cut BK-600, I decided to pull the trigger on the Sparrowhawk. I'm glad I did! This is a wonderful guitar. Its contours are well-suited and ergonomic--it is very comfortable to play seated and standing. The body is also very well-balanced. I was concerned about neck-dive, but this guitar doesn't have that problem. The finish is beautiful in person: not too bright, but it still has a very rich burst.
What surprised me most about this guitar is its sound. I expected it to sound great in high-gain situations--it's a Mastodon artist's signature, after all--and it certainly does sound great for metal. What I was not prepared for was how rich, warm, and chimey the pickups are in low-gain and clean settings. These MojoTone Hellbenders are some of the best pickups for rock I've ever heard, and they're extremely versatile. They are voiced very well for crunch and clarity: turn the gain up, and you still get excellent articulation and string separation. Really wonderful pickups, and they can certainly do more than metal, though they do that very well.
Overall, this is a wonderful guitar, and I'm delighted with my purchase. I'd like to say thanks to my sales engineer, Jordan Garrett, for his help in getting me squared away with this guitar. Jordan's always a great help!
