Evans SoundOff

By Janet M.

My husband likes this - works great, better than a previous brand he had purchased. We live in a condo so trying not to annoy our neighbors, next door neighbor says she can barely hear the drums

Evans universal bass drum mute

By Bryan E. from Kentucky
Music Background: Drummer

This product is a good upgrade from previous designs, no more worry of a adhesive part wearing out and not coming off over time when playing drums, the adhesive things that would stick on the drumhead would always run its course.

Not Recommended

By John Z. from St petersburg, FL

Destroyed after 2 days of playing. Beater (felt) went completely through the pad, which also separated from the foam it's cheaply glued to. Great concept and idea but zero stars for construction and material. Waste of money.

Good but...

Had to re-glue. Evan's gets 4 stars for that

Waste of money

By Mike from OH

You should just get $ and duct tape it to your kick drum - broke 2 in 5 hours of playing after exchanging the first. Very poorly constructed, glue came undone within one session. Would give it 0 if possible and hoping the Aquarian super pads come back into stock ASAP.

Evans Soundoff Bass Drum Mute

By Glenn from Limerick, Pa
Music Background: Pretty much self taught. Played in a few bands around the Tri State area. Always liked music and playing drums.

I bought this bass drum mute a week or so ago. It works and is adjustable to fit most any size bass drum. It gives me the option to play quietly when I need to.

Very good mute!

By David H. from Washington, DC

Mutes the bass drum but not so much that you can get nothing but a dull thud. It is also very easy to mount. Very satified.

Excellent Drum Mute

By abraham b. from lakewood, NJ
Music Background: Drummer since 1987

The Evans SoundOff Universal Bass Drum Mute works great. It really improves my drums practicing when I need to keep the tone down. The drum mutes make all the difference and they are great to have for drummers, especially for quiet practice. Please, see video.

Quiets the drum until it breaks

By Sweetwater Customer from DE

I bought one, it worked great for a few weeks. Then I had to glue it back together, as it's glued very sparingly. Beat chewed through the pad next. Finally, one of the side claws snapped off. I called Evans, and they replaced it for free. Then exactly the same thing happened to the second over the course of a couple of weeks. Way too expensive for this lack of quality.

A Little Trick

By Kenny S. from Saint Louis, MO
Music Background: Experienced Drummer

I have already reviewed this product, but I have gone through at least four by now. I had a problem with the arms breaking off at the clamps, but I have learned not to tighten the clamps down against the hoop very tight at all. Also, it helps to position the mute under the horizontal tension rods. If you put it on top of those rods, the mute can rest against them, work them loose, and scratch your hoops.

Good, but fragile.

By Sweetwater Customer

I bought this about 2 1/2 months ago. It worked great, and my wife couldn't hear my bass drum from the next room over. Unfortunately, one of the arms that holds the pad to the bass drum snapped today. I only have the time to practice for around 1-2 hours a week, so I haven't put to much play time onto this item, it just seems like the one I got was a little fragile.

Falling apart

By Cody R. from WASHINGTON, IN

I've used this thing for a few weeks and I've gotta say it does its job at dampening the sound of my kick, but after a little while, the black pad started to peel off, and eventually it fell off. The whole thing feels really cheap and I wouldn't recommend it.

The More You Play, the Faster You'll Replace

By Kenny S. from Saint Louis, MO
Music Background: Experienced Drummer

I use a single pedal, so when one spot on the pad wears out I can move the pad a little and prolong the life of the mute. I recommend using a felt beater on these. I typically use a rubber beater, and they are too tough for this product. I play a lot, so I feel like this mute pays for itself quickly.

It works, but …

By Bill from Virginia
Music Background: Returning to drumming after a 50-year gap.

It does mute the bass drum, so that's good. But the drum key clamps are inconvenient to use and require me to move the floor Tom out of the way to position it. Since I take the mutes on/off frequently this is inconvenient. Plus, the pad's being as thick as it is, the feel of the pedal is different than without it. The other drum/cymbal mutes go on/off quickly and easily, but this one takes a bit of time and effort. I'm experimenting with replacing the drum key clamps, but haven't found the right solution yet. So I continue to use it as is because it does, after all, work.

Excellent Product

By Jesse H.

This is an excellent product for those that have to practice in their home with others living in it. We have our music room in our upstairs with hard floors and with these sound offs on all of the drums you cannot tell that someone is going to town practicing on the kit. These are great for those that want to practice but don't want to necessarily make everyone listen to them. I would recommend this to anyone with a set at home. Well worth the money for sure.

Fits well on 18" bass

By Sarah
Music Background: Gigging, recording, education

I switched from Remo Silent Strokes when I bought a new set. If you need to be as quiet as possible, Silent Stokes are the better option, but the SoundOff do allow you to hear yourself (a little bit) and the feedback is invaluable. I exert significantly less energy playing, so I can play for longer and faster.

HMMMMMM !!!!!!!!

By MG

After purchasing this product, I couldn't wait to try it !!
I opened the box ( which was way too big for nothing compared to the original box that was inside ie; excess plastic and cardboard)
there was no instructions ( it's actually not that hard ) but I hooked it up and manually used my bass drum pedal and it didn't sound right at first so I re positioned it several times and it still didn't sound "muffled" enough and made strange sounds, I had to put EXTRA crazy glue on the pad that was glued on the foam and it still wasn't helpful enough !!!
Overall, am I satisfied ?? Not really, the previous "Regular" padding I had was better to my ear !!!
I'm not even sure if I will use it or not now !!!!
Sorry Evans "Soundoff" !!!

Didn't work for me, unfortunately

By Steven W. from Redmond, WA

I've tried it with different beaters (two plastic, one felt), in different locations on the head, and over different batter heads (but with the same ported resonant head). Placed on top of a regular batter head (tuned with the right amount of rebound for my liking), it doesn't seem to be any quieter, but it is really unpleasant to hear. It also takes quite a bit of response off of the head, too, which is of course not what I wanted. Just for completeness, I tried it on a mesh head, too (again, tuned for rebound, and also with enough masking tape on it to get a nice, but very quiet, tone). On that head, it's substantially louder than without it on, and (again), it ruins the rebound and it sounds unpleasant. An unnatural, clattering, rattling smack. If anything, a felt beater makes this thing clatter even worse.

> Fits drums from 18"-26" / C-clamp attachment is easy to install and remove.

Yes, and yes.

> Reproduces the natural feel and rebound of an un-muted drum.

I'd have to respectfully disagree on that one. It doesn't sound anything like the demo video, and it kills the momentum of the beater stone dead (so, it'll suit you if you're a beater burier). I'll store it away in case I ever figure out what I'm doing wrong with it.

If you want a quiet bass drum, I'd highly recommend replacing your batter head with a Remo SilentStroke. Tension the Remo to emulate the rebound of a regular batter head (use a ported resonant head if you have to, to keep the batter-bounce manageable). At that point, the Remo will essentially be silent, and you won't even be able to hear it over tippy-tapping a low-volume hi-hat. So, then, slap an impact patch on the Remo and keep sticking strips of painter's tape onto it until you get the volume and tone you want.

Not professional grade.

By Bob M. from Connecticut
Music Background: Rock Drummer

Padding lasted a couple of rounds of practice and completely failed. The foam is very cheap and the playing surface is nothing more than a computer mouse pad. The bonding between the playing surface and the foam started to fail after the first use and finally fell off. I'm very disappointed. I think that if Evans really was serious about this product they could work with some materials engineers to make it much more durable. I couldn't honestly recommend this to anyone.

wears out fast, affects technique

By bill from nashville

mine lasted for about a year, and i don't play that much. the beater eventually wore through. also, the thickness of the mute shortens the travel off the beater. when i took mine off, after it was worn out, i felt like that extra distance straight to the head affected my playing. i got used to pedal impact with the mute on, and now that it's gone, i have to get used to that again.

i now just play without it, and use more padding inside the drum, and cover the drum. i won't try a bass drum mute in front of the beater again.

Perfect BD Practice Muffler

By Rick T. from Chicago, IL
Music Background: Pro Drummer

Very quiet. I peeled off the extra pad on the front to further reduce the volume. Attaches fast as clamps can be adjusted for a press fit on the hoop. Using as pictured. With the extra front pad off, the beat rods can click against the horizontal mounting rod but only if you play too hard. You can easily pad that are if you want. But fast and easy to setup is the best thing.
