Lakland Skyline

By Wade Babcock from Tomkins Cove, NY on October 24, 2023 Music Background: Music !

Just got it two days ago but so far so good absolutely love it the sound and playability it's balanced very well and not heavy for now I go straight into my board a behringer euro power 4000 it's only gonna sound better with separate amp

best ss there is

By doug morton from VT on June 25, 2022 Music Background: 50 years at the bottom

If proper balance, powerful tone, easy set-up maintenance, light weight, you need a ss now (age issues), and perfect ergonomics matter to you get one. There is no better ss bass IMO, in fact get two so you can have one w/ rounds and one w/ flats.

I'm in Love!

By Sweetwater Customer on January 21, 2021

Such a phenomenal sounding bass. Coming from a Fender player series J-bass, this lightweight, Lakland hollowbody makes the Fender sound like a toy. Installing some Labella tapewounds, front pickup only and with the tone rolled down gives a sweet upright sound.

This bass is beautifully made and came out of the box with a perfect setup. No adjustment required. (Thanks to Lakland, Sweetwater or both)

The only con to this bass is the tone control is not set as flush against the body as the pickup controls are. (There's a visible gap where you can partially see the pot shaft.)

But that's just quibbling....All in all, I'm a Lakland fan for life.

Short Scale Vintage Vibe

By Marvin Leo Forte from Portland, Oregon on December 26, 2020 Music Background: Recording artist, studio musician, live band work

I've owned this bass for a couple of years now and it's one of my favorite basses. I usually have a few basses on hand in the studio, to give me tonal options to fit the track. This little beauty is perfect when you are looking for that shot scale, vintage sound. String it up with some flatwound strings and you get that short scale, hollowbody plunk made famous on so many recordings. It's not as muddy sounding as most of the basses in this class, but it's got definition and character. Not as punchy as something like a Fender Mustang, but more clarity than a Hofner. The neck is thin at the nut, perfect people who prefer a Jazz neck over a Precision neck. Intonation is impeccable.

Great tone range

By chris from Juneau Alaska on February 13, 2019 Music Background: semi pro....

I really like this bass. Nice round tone and it can growl when you lean on it a bit. I like the pick up layout, but slapping is hard to do unless you play behind the neck pick so you don't hit the pickup.
I got a "used" one from Paul at Sweetwater. I was told it went back to Lakland for some kind of buzz problems, and I couldn't return it since it is used.
It had a weird overtone on come notes, so I finally found that the neck pickup was vibrating against the metal mounting bracket. Now it's fine.
My first 30 inch scale, and it is easier to reach that low F! And it's light!!
Thanks Paul for being honest and helping out.

Butter....

By Garrison on January 1, 2017

Butter....That's the best word that describes how smooth this instrument plays. I'm a drummer that plays bass as my second instrument. I wanted to upgrade and was seeking a quality short scale hollow or semi-hollow body bass. I needed some guidance so I decided to check Sweetwater on the advice of my son-in-law. Well he wasn't wrong. I called and was directed to Joe Schafer who is a drummer and bass player as well. He was VERY patient with me...and after several phone conversations I followed his advice and bought the Lakland Skyline bass.
The Skyline is a full hollow body bass which makes it surprisingly light. Also, this instrument is well balanced - no neck dive. The fret board is clean (no rough edges), and I found no dead spots on the fret board which can be a problem with bolt on necks. Lastly, the set-up. I can't stress this enough...the wrong set-up can turn a quality instrument into a nightmare to play. This is where Sweetwater did their job. This bass plays incredibly smooth! Great Job Sweetwater!!!! Also, a recognition to the S.Koreans who have proven themselves in making fine instruments, and to Joe Schafer for his guidance.

Really well made

By Jeff from Queens, NY on October 14, 2016

I am a recent convert to short-scale basses, and when I saw this bass online I fell in love with the styling. Because they're basically impossible to find in an actual store, I took the plunge with the hope that I could count on Lakland's great reputation, plus the few reviews I could find. After just a few days of playing, I am very impressed with how solid and playable this bass is. String tension is fantastic and the whole thing feels as solid as a rock despite being a hollowbody. If I had any complaints at all, they would be: (1) it came with roundwounds instead of flats, and many reviews say with flats the tone is amazing, and (2) the pickguard is designed to not lay flat - there is a spacer under it so that it angles out from the body slightly. This is not a problem unless you try to do some slapping - now of course hollowbodies are not intended for that, but with the roundwounds plus how solid the body feels I wanted to see what it sounded like, and it does indeed sound great - except my right hand hits the pickguard which then hits the body and makes a noise.

Overall a beautiful instrument.

Great bass

By David O'Bryan from Virginia on July 23, 2015

This is the best short scale bass I have ever played. The sound is very rich and full. Tone is slightly on the dark side but great for my tastes. The single coil pickups have a barely noticeable amount of hum when soloed. The neck is PLEKed and plays very fast and easy. The bass is light and balances well. Highly recommended!

Very Nice !

By D.J. from So Cal on March 11, 2015 Music Background: Music Background: Musician, Hobbiest , Gear hound !

Lakeland has obviously chosen very wisely as with whom to partner with for their off shore manufacturing....All I can say to those Korean craftsmen is .....BRAVO ! Nicely designed ! Is a bit longer than you might expect with the in-line headstock contributing to that . No neck dive what-so ever and the bass is very comfortable on the strap ; doesn't feel constricted at all to my six footer frame ; thoughtful design indeed . Plays like a dream with a nice vintage tone . A winner !

The perfect shortscale bass...

By CB from NY on December 20, 2014 Music Background: Semi pro musician

This bass is a great blend of features, no sharp edges to dent your wrist, hollowbody but with a "real" bridge, pickup placement is perfect and it sounds like a Hofner but plays like a well balanced solidbody.

Well worth the $.

Way over priced

By TN Dave from Tennessee on September 19, 2023

Was really looking forward to this. Granted i orderd a show room or blemished one and have done this a lot with sweetwater..always a good deal and the blemished guitar usually looks great. This one not only had minor blemish but it had some kind of sticky glue residue all over the front of bass near the bottom ...I mean bad. Took a while to get it off and I think some of it has ruined the finish permanently. Not expecting a perfect guitar i even overlooked that. But to me the cheap feeling of this guitar is really sad. The volume and tone knobs are made of the cheapest plastic you could imagine. The sharpness on the edges from the cast process on the knobs are so sharp like they just came out of the mold and where never finished just slapped on. Considering this guitar is up there with a fender price wise personally I would never by another lakeland again. The Guild starfire is twice the quality for less than half the price. Probably going to off this one. The squires blow this away as well. Just got the paranormal 30 inch squire bass. It is absolutely a masterpiece build wise compared to this. Just about 3rd the price too. Buyer beware
