DSM Humboldt Electronics Simplifier DLX Zero Watt Dual Channel & Reverb Stereo Amplifier Reviews

2-ch Analog Guitar Preamp with 3 Amp Voicings, Power Amp Sim, Cab Sim, Reverb, Stereo Balanced XLR Outputs, 1/8" Aux Input, 1/8" Headphone Output, and Footswitch

The DSM & Humboldt Simplifier DLX is the natural progression of the original Simplifier — many weekend and worship guitarists’ favorite “zero-watt” analog amplifier. This pedalboard-sized stereo analog preamp and cab sim is every bit as versatile as having two fully independent amps at your feet. Dual independent signal paths allow you to meticulously dial in clean and dirt channels or, alternatively, run two wildly different tones in parallel to create elaborate wet/dry direct rigs. As with the original, each channel of the Simplifier DLX is driven by a triad of essential amp British and American amp tones. Only now, a 3-way Mode switch (Clean/Crunch/Lead) allows you to really slather on the saturation or dial up the dynamics in a hurry. Cab simulation and a new 3-way reverb can be dialed in per amp path, as can the Simplifier DLX’s simulated power tube emulation and critical feedback-based Resonance and Presence controls. Just like the original Simplifier, the Simplifier DLX makes a supreme pedal platform — its balanced TRS mono/stereo input stage and stereo FX return bring your boutique overdrives, stereo delays, and reverbs to life. Factor in a dedicated headphone out and aux in for live monitoring, an FX pass-through for handing off stereo effects to a pair of stage amps, low-noise stereo balanced XLR outs for sending signal to FOH, and a Spread switch that lets you achieve wide faux-stereo effects from mono guitar signals, and the DSM & Humboldt Simplifier DLX pedalboard preamplifier is a top-tier option for traditional players as well as those seeking to leave the amp at home.

Nicing sounding pedal

By thomas a. from Bethesda, MD
Music Background: weekend warrior

Not without problems - Simplifier DLX issue confirmed, the post return signal is bleeding back into the start of the simplifier causing it to feedback if you have a sufficiently long reverb or delay in "using Stereo effect loop". This happens frequently, Helix Stomp into Stereo loop on DLX, with cab sim on of off or either XLR and 1/4 outs. Sweetwater could recreate it from the Reddits researched. Tried to setup 7CM, and even the non dual block patch is affected sometimes. It's a nice little pedal, running mono might work. DSM support resolution was " change for a mono cable in the send and that will solve your problem".. It's a nice little sounding pedal.....?..

Quit working

By James W. from Vian, OK

Just a couple of months after the warrenty expired, one channel of the deluxe quit working. While I was playing through it, B channel has no sound and A channel sounds like it is just going through the reverb. It sounded great at first, and has worked great in the past. I have tested it several times with same results. I have sent a message to DSM Humboldt and am waiting for a reply. Giving it a 2 half rating cause it did sound great plugged directly into my pa system.

Best Amp Pedal available!

By Tyler from Tennessee
Music Background: Worship Guitarist

I am a worship guitarist, so naturally I was drawn to Strymon products. The Iridium is great, but when I plugged in the the Simplifier DLX, I entered a whole new realm of sonic bliss! The all analog circuitry makes an immediate difference in the "feel" under the fingers. I didn't really realize what people meant when they said things sound digital, but after hearing this thing, I absolutely get the obsession with analog pedals/amps. I'm honestly disappointed with DSM Humboldt for not putting more money into marketing, because they have an incredible product in the Simplifier DLX. Also, the reverb on this unit is absolutely perfect! I no longer need a reverb pedal as the reverb is extremely useful. My only gripe might be that you can't switch between reverb types using the footswitch, but it's only minor when considering how good this pedal is. Another feature I really enjoy is the "Aux In" line. I just plug in my bluetooth transmitter and can practice along with any music I want. This is an absolute must-try amp pedal if you are in the market.

A Massively Overlooked ‘Amp-In-A-Box’ Option

By SEAL from LA
Music Background: Recording Artist

In my opinion what DSM are doing is nothing short of incredible. The fact they opt for an 'all analogue' approach rather than the common IR one is to me the key as to why their devices sound so good. They just have a sonic integrity that sounds both natural and hard to beat. I found when using the DLX with its two-channels, it was possible to utilise this pedal much in the same way I would a two-channel amp. Therefore opening up options like using it in a 'low-gain / high gain' capacity. I personally use it this way with the addition of a an extra boost pedal on the high gain channel. Obviously one can choose to taste whether it's an OD or DIS you use with it. I have tried and still own a few other options like the UA, Two Notes, Tonex, Fender TMP, Quad Cortex etc. I find this to be the most tactile and sonically pleasing of all.

Thanks.

Great sound for live sound silent stage use

By Mike S. from Sturgeon Bay, WI
Music Background: Band musician for decades

My band has gone to a silent stage situation in 2023 and moving forward. We used in ear monitors already. I tried various direct options. All had two problems. Either they were close but not close enough to my normal tube amp and pedal board mic'd sound, or they were very hard to program for a knuckle dragging caveman guitar player like myself. My long time Sweetwater rep, Bob Furlong, said many guitar players he talked to really liked the Simplifier Deluxe. Now I remembered Don Carr's video when this came out and remember the sounds seemed legit, but it was an internet video. I indicated a good Fender clean and Marshall overdrive sound is all I needed and the Vox sound would be a nice bonus. I longed to twist knobs and flip switches to get a fast workflow sans menus. I plugged this thing in after the family was asleep and could not stop and played for hours. In minutes I had to my ears fantastic sounds and most importantly they felt real. This same feel connection was missing in many higher end modeler's and profiler's I tried and many other units. Then I messed with the Vox sounds and all the other mic placement options and again found fantastic tones. I'm now getting good at "on the fly" knob/switches changes before a tune I need a specific sound for. Normally the two sounds- American and British are all I need. It is all in there and easy to use. An HX effects is in the effects loop with a few overdrives and wah run before the input (just like a real tube amp.) It sounds so good with all these pedals, just like an amp. The analog difference they discuss on numerous videos on the internet is a real thing. Thanks Bob for this recommendation. It stopped my search for an easy to use silent stage solution.

I'm speechless about the Simplifier DLX

By Francisco O. from OSSEO, MN

I got the Simplifier DLX about two months ago and, I've been using it as my toy to go during my last 2 shows.
The sound quality, features and FX-loop capability in a tiny box are out of the world.
A quick shout to my Sweetwater rep. Jordan G. He is amazing and helped me out to get the Simplifier DLX on a timely manner.

Amazing

By Erik B. from Dillsburg, PA

I feel like I am constantly chasing the best guitar tone while saving my back.

In the Simplifier DLX, I think I have found it. I am having so much fun just playing.. no menu diving or button tweaking.. turn a couple knobs and go.

I've ditched my amps in favor of the DLX.

By Adam G. from Vancouver, WA

I'm closing in on 2 years since purchasing the DLX from Sweetwater and I'm finally getting around to a review. I love this thing. Sonically it's magnificent. I primarily use the Vox and Fender channels. The Vox channel is convincingly sparkly/chimey and the Fender is warmer and punchier in the low end. I'm using this with an array of pedals and it plays nice with all of them. The stereo loop is spectacular. There's no going back to mono. Tremendous flexibility with all the cab/tube/placement choices - and the ability to dial everything in to taste whether going into Logic Pro or into the 2 FRFR cabinets [stereo] I use playing live. [If you're gigging, just make sure your FRFR cabs are up to the task.] There's no disappointment though in using this vs most amps in most situations. With a good pre amp pedal and some of your favorite gain stages up front, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between this and an amp, either as a player or a listener. The DLX still seems to be under the radar but it's a fantastic piece of gear, especially if space or weight are issues you need to conquer.

Dsm humboldt is awesome

By Steve p. from Minnesota
Music Background: Music pro

I've had my simplifier dlx for two weeks now. There simply isn't a bad sound in this thing. Only complaint is the writing is super tiny, but the layout is super easy to memorize.and my sweetwater rep, Braden, is the best!

This thing is the best!

By Steve p. from Hines mn
Music Background: Professional musician, 40 yrs experience

Just got my simplifier dlx. Wow, is this thing versatile! The real gem of this unit on the dirty channel is the resonance knob.but there are tons of things to explore on here. And as usual, Braden my rep is the man! Painless transaction, super fast shipping. I'm definitely hooked on sweetwater!

Great sound, and output options

By Sweetwater Customer

I love the sounds you can get from this, the cab sim is pretty convincing too, and the reverb sounds good. Only gripe is how small it is, and the knobs are crammed but that might be a positive to others. I can reproduce some very solid cleans and distorted rock sounds from this, and it keeps a quiet noise floor from guitar to pedals in front to the Humboldt and out to a uad interface.

So, SO good.

By Ray from New Orleans
Music Background: Pro guitarist.

This thing...

Best innovation for gigging musicians since beer. All sounds are fire. No noise, no problems with good power, which is YOUR responsibility as a gigging musician.

I just have it set up like this:
Tuner=> Keeley Tone Workstation=> into Simplifier =>FX Send=> Dunlop Mini Crybaby => Keeley Supermod Workstation => EHX 720 looper=>FX return. So good. Just get it. The single-channel one is pretty amazing, too, I just prefer the "amp" distortion. This is really an amazing marvel of engineering. Whoever had noise issues probably just had bad cables or bad power, because this thing is actually super simple and only has top-notch components.

DSM Humbolt simplifier deluxe hum problem

By Sweetwater Customer

The first one I received had a loud hum. Ty and the tech team sent me a replacement unit. It also had a hum but Ty figured it out that it was most likely my power supply. Ty suggested and sent me a power supply and it works great, no hum. If dsm humbolt would include the power supply this could have been avoided, and they should for this price. Thanks to the great team at sweetwater for saving the day. My advice is to get the suggested power supply to use.

Fantastic

By Kyle C. from Nashville & 30a FL
Music Background: Worship Guitarist

I bought as a replacement for digital modeling (Line 6) to have an analog direct amp option. Incredible innovation! I play in a worship music setting that covers everything from gospel/soul to modern pop/rock.

You could integrate with a large board but I am
more an organic amp tone based player so I'm using just an overdrive and delay into the unit then using the onboard reverb - direct to house. This is closest to having a great amp. I've owned a Matchless, blackface Bassman, Div/13, etc...and this is about as good. Only issue is headphone amp picks up noise/RF. Not an issue when I use XLRs out and sound guys love it.

Running the the two 'amps' in parallel and there's great clarity in the nuances of my playing and fantastic fidelity to whatever configuration you have set up.

Eventually I will get one that works right...

By mike from Texas
Music Background: 50 years experience

I have had: Strymon Iridium, Walrus ACS1 and now this... sorta. The DSM is the best IMHO, even with issues. The first one had volume balance issues (well except for number 2... it sounded like poo). The second barely worked. The third one; the top two rows of knobs and switches do nothing... Luckily Sweetwaters customer service is awesome... I am confident I will get a good unit eventually.

A versatile piece of gear

By Tyler B. from BOULDER, CO

This thing is amazing. It's quiet and super convenient. I love all of the different configurations. Being able to dial in two completely different amp tones and switch effortlessly is awesome. No more bringing multiple amps to gigs for me! It's especially nice to be able to have stereo in and split the amps. For smaller shows, the other guitarist and I can plug in our own pedalboards and each get an independent input straight into FoH. This makes smaller gigs incredibly easy. I use the Fender on the pushed channel and he uses the Vox on the regular channel. It's so much better than lugging a Deluxe and AC30 around. The Simplifier doesn't quite feel same as the real amps, but you can dial in an extremely similar sound. I think it sounds better than the Iridium, but I do miss the midi control... That could be a deal breaker to some. I can't praise the reverb enough. I'm not using my RV-500 nearly as much. I'm not a fan of the room (though it isn't bad) but I absolutely love the Plate and the Ether sounds great as well.

Amazing

By Sweetwater Customer

I love this amp.
It sounds real. Even the clean fender settings. I play in a duo with a piano/vocalist and it reduces the stage volume exponentially. It takes a little getting used to, but it's worth it.
Haven't tried it with drums so I can't say what that is like. But I have recorded with it and like it.
