PRS SE Silver Sky Electric Guitar - Stone Blue with Rosewood Fingerboard Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Poplar Body, Maple Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, and 3 Single-coil Pickups -Stone Blue

The original Silver Sky was designed in conjunction with John Mayer to elevate a familiar guitar aesthetic with PRS Guitars' world-renowned innovation. That collaboration is now making its way into the SE line with the goal of delivering a more affordable version of the Silver Sky — with all the same PRS quality! The SE Silver Sky features a lightweight poplar body loaded with a trio of 635JM “S” pickups to deliver all the glassy highs and round bottom end that you’d expect out of a classic three single-coil configuration. While the original Silver Sky kept the original 7.25-inch radius of its inspiration, the SE Silver Sky's maple/rosewood neck offers a slightly modernized 8.5-inch radius that feels vintage, but injects a dose of modern playability. Since its inception, PRS has been known to push the boundaries of guitar design. The Silver Sky SE combines that philosophy with a deep respect for tradition, resulting in a high-performance, vintage-style model of the highest caliber — but at a wallet-friendly price!

Love my Silver Sky SE

By Christian Montiel from Washington on March 18, 2024 Music Background: Worship Guitarist

This guitar was a major step up. It's a beautiful guitar, it feels great on stage and very lite. Loving everything about it.

Great guitar feel and sound!

By Michael Otto from Macungie, PA on March 7, 2024

This is my first S style guitar in almost 30 years. I still have my first MIM Strat, but rebuilt it. I liked how it sounded in all the reviews. The feel of the neck is thick, but very comfortable. The sound is unique and I really enjoy it. Some say it doesn't do well with high gain, but I have done it a few times and it sounded really good. The resonance of the guitar unplugged is nice and it sounds great plugged in to my Marshall half stack. I highly recommend this guitar

Beyond Expectations

By Art Martinez from Crowley, TX on December 20, 2023 Music Background: 25 years as a hobbyist, worship musician and blues enthusiast

So I had ordered a PRS SE Silver Sky which came sub standard to what I believe Paul Reed Smith himself would have approved of through his QC department. Somehow it even passed the 55 point inspection before being shipped to me.

I called my sales representative; Jason Thiele for help. Without hesitation, he said he had sent me a return shipping label and he would be shipping me a replacement. Jason has been nothing less than fantastic in helping me with my gear purchases. Sweetwater itself is bar none the best Music gear business for musicians. They aren't just about sales, they about people and building a strong relationship.

Finally, John Mayer can certainly be pleased to have endorsed and put his name behind PRS and the Silver Sky. This guitar is a dream to play and tone is fantastic. To think this isn't even the CORE model.

It's not all hype

By Michael Robinson from BEREA, KY on October 10, 2023

I was curious about the se silver sky and if it lived up to all the hype I've heard. I can tell you that this guitar is worth every penny. This exceeded my expectations and I am very well pleased with my purchase.

Amazing alternative to the traditional Stratocaster

By Roland Gomez from Bellflower, CA on September 14, 2023

Ive had mine for about 6 months now and here are my thoughts. If you want a Fender Stratocaster sound, get a Fender. The reason you should go for a silver sky is if you want a slightly different than traditional strat sound. The silver sky tends to have an overall brighter sound that adds a bit of sparkle to the top end of the EQ. So I would say this is not better than a fender strat, it is DIFFERENT. Where I do think the PRS is better than the Fender is the feel and playability. This beast was out of the box ready to play where some Fender Strats I have had in the past feel a bit clunky or rough around the edges in some areas.

Top Notch Instrument

By Rivers Martinez from Florida, USA on September 7, 2023 Music Background: Intermediate Guitarist and Producer

I can't say enough good things about the PRS Silver Sky SE. Honestly this is my perfect guitar. After playing a Squier for 7 years I figured it was time for an upgrade and man, did I choose the right axe. The playability, tone, and aesthetics exceed my expectations. Some specific parts that I love is the incredible sustain and the way the tone knobs gradually affect the pickups, unlike the on/off switch of a Bullet. I've already gotten compliments on how my playing has improved and how beautiful the guitar looks. And shoutout to my awesome Sales Tech Charlton Young for helping me find out when it came back in stock. 11/10

Single coil delight!

By Paul on June 28, 2023 Music Background: Hobby player

Haven't put it down since it arrived. Quality and playability live up to the PRS SE reputation for excellence. But it's the pickups that surprise me. They have great presence, clarity and a touch sensitivity - far better than my American Strat.
A great choice.
Thanks Derek and Sweetwater team.

The most versatile guitar I’ve owned.

By Randy A from SMTX on April 23, 2023

Never been a single coil, S type kinda guy. If I would have played this guitar when I first started, I would've saved a lot of money and time trying to find what I just found in this thing. I think we're gonna do some great things together, and I'm looking forward to it. I love my SE SILVER SKY.

Thank you Sweetwater for being such a fantastic company.

Favorite S-style guitar

By Robert Hepler from Shelbyville, TN on April 9, 2023 Music Background: Professional musician, writer, and producer

I will say this is my favorite S-Style guitar in this price range. The push in trem bar, smooth fast neck, and the pickups are warm and darker than typical. It stays in tune and I've gotten rave reviews the last two weeks at church. Highly recommend.

Can't Get Enough! Amazing instrument for the cost.

By Joseph Rock from NEVEDA, NV on April 9, 2023 Music Background: Bedroom Warrior / Song Writer

I purchase this guitar looking for a s-type specifically with SSS. Knowing PRS makes a great guitar in the SE line I did a deep dive with review videos and comparisons to the Fender Player Series. I was reluctant to order this not having had played one, but knew I wanted an S-type and felt the PRS was a good bet for quality and finishing. I was not disappointed! I expected to love it, but what I didn't expect was it to become my go to guitar. Every opportunity I have to play I find myself immediately reaching for the SS SE, while my beautiful 24-08 Custom SE collects a little dust. Unless I have a specific need for humbuckers the SS SE will always be the first picked up! Absolutely LOVE this guitar. The funny bit is before I bought one, I was not a John Mayer fan. Having played one I also did a deep dive into his music, and got to say, now I'm a fan!

Great Guitar!

By Sweetwater Customer on February 10, 2023

This is the 3rd electric guitar that I have purchased, and it's got to be the most versatile and all around best that I've gotten. Great guitar, perfect for really any kind of music. Will highly recommend!

Feels amazing

By Cam from SoCal on January 27, 2023

Absolutely love this guitar. Neck is very fast and can't imagine one that could feel better. Selector, knobs and tuners all feel top notch as well. I've had it almost a month and have yet to find any negative. Wish it had the locking tuners but that's just personal preference. The customer service from Sweetwater was absolutely amazing as usual. If your interested in one of these go ahead and pull the trigger, you won't regret it.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I GOT ONE!

By Dexter Joseph from Dover, DE on January 6, 2023 Music Background: Lifetime Guitar Player!

This guitar is the absolute best. I ordered it back in May of 202 and received it in November of 2022. It was well worth the wait. The sound from each position (Played on a Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp) is incredible. I especially like the dedicated Tone Control for the bridge pickup. Since I've had it, I have changed the setup to a floating bridge/tremolo, and I've changed out the tuners to locking tuners. Other than that I have left everything else the same. TIP: if you're not familiar with setting up a guitar, have a professional do it for you, I just happen to know how to do it myself. Shout out to my Sales Engineer, Bryan Campbell who kept in touch with me and kept me informed every step of the way. I have included before and after pictures for comparison. I happen to own 2 Fender Stratocasters and the Silver Sky SE just took their place as my favorite single coil guitar. I have ZERO complaints!! If you can get one GET ONE!!

Best Value on the Planet

By CHRISTOPHER NOETZEL on October 17, 2022 Music Background: Moderate player

These are tough to get but it may be the first guitar I would call a "must have" for every player. In the price point, I certainly have not played a better guitar. It is PRS end to end but has all the sparkle and snap of a strat. Probably a pinch warmer but to my ear, this is an improvement. It's not as fancy as higher end PRSs but make no mistake, this guitar is the real deal. Get one!

Great Guitar for the $$$

By James Black from Owasso, OK on June 3, 2022

First the guitar needed very little adjustment out of the box which surprised me. Second my first interaction with it was going to be to replace the pickups, but after playing it a bit I decided to put it off a while, the stock ones are much better than I anticipated. Fretwork was above par for the price point. The radius was the surprise that threw me, the greater radius neck than standard Silver Sky actually keeps my bends in bounds. I actually like it more in hand than the borrowed S. Sky I was playing. Cons- Yeah, I have two that are purely aesthetic. I hate the feel and shape of the horrid grey plastic tuner knobs and the matching jumbo trashy looking truss rod cover. They could lose those to dumpster dive ornaments next iteration. I'll be looking for something to replace them with. They can not stay. Otherwise I'm 100% satisfied with its sound and playable performance and would rate it on par with my American Pro II Strat. I'd highly recommend this one.

Amazing guitar, unbeatable price

By Christopher Fuller from Medfield, MA on May 25, 2022 Music Background: Classic rocker at heart, classically trained vocalist, gigging guitarist/singer

I was lucky enough to grab a demo model with a nearly unnoticeable ding on the back of the body near the neck and crack in the volume know. I'd been staring at these for months and waiting to be able to compare with a Strat Player. When the chance came to get one now (instead of late this year) I couldn't pass it up and I'm glad I didn't. Have played it for a couple weeks and out at a gig. The things you read and see in reviews are accurate. The pickups sound fantastic, neck feels great (rolled edges of the frets are a nice touch), it's light and just plays incredibly well. It's the tone that keeps me picking it up day after day, though. Truly great!

Excellent Guitar on a Budget

By Grant Dailey from OLD HICKORY, TN on May 24, 2022

First let me say that the Sweetwater staff is top notch. Due to international shipping delays, my order was delayed several months from when I purchased it. Sweetwater kept me updated routinely - and even got this guitar in my hands a few months before they anticipated.

Onto the guitar: this is my first PRS. I have a Fender custom shop strat that is my main point of reference for comparison. Right out of the box this guitar felt amazing. It does not feel like a $900 guitar. The body is light and comfortable. The neck and action are smooth and quick. Everything frets cleanly and bends feel smooth and natural. The aesthetics of this guitar are great. I love the color and the matching tuners and other features. The pickups sound great and have a tone distinct from the traditional strat sound. The gif bag is a nice addition.

I love playing it and love finding new tones with it.

Best buy for the money bar non!!

By Steven Giordano from Rochester NY on May 16, 2022 Music Background: Been playing everything you throw at it.

I have owned strays for 20 years but this guitar the PRS SE Silver Sky isoneof the finest guitars I have ever owned. It's tone is majestic, plays like a dream and is light enough to wear all night without killing your shoulder. A fantastic guitar for well under a grand and plays like a dream I LOVE this guitar and can tell you from experience it is a joy to play and sounds even better than you can expect.

Just amazing!

By Sweetwater Customer on May 13, 2022 Music Background: Hobbyist, gigging musician, producer, writer.

You know how you want something for so long, and when you get it you're disappointed? Well this is not the case. This guitar has exceeded my expectations In tone, intonation, playability and just everything. I can't put it down! I got mine yesterday and would have slept with it in my bed if my wife wouldn't have gotten mad. I have two other PRS guitars and love them. But this one is going ahead of my 2017 American Pro Strat! The pickups on this guitar can go from sweet and mellow to gnarly and mean so quick. And there is never a point where you lose the twang. The high end rings out in the bass notes! How did they get these tones!!
The action was setup high for my taste and the tremolo needed balancing, but that took 5 minutes and it hasn't gone out of tune yet. Just a great guitar!

Absolutely Amazing

By Brooks from Fair Play, SC on May 7, 2022

I preordered the Silver Sky SE in Stone Blue back in January and I received it on April 21st. First let me say, I've been playing Fender Strats for 17 years, but I wanted to give the Silver Sky a shot, so when this price friendly version was announced, I jumped on it. I have been blown away since Day 1. The neck plays so well, the color is gorgeous and changes a little depending on how the light hits it, the guitar is actually lighter than my strats that I play, and the pickups sing! The 4th position pickup on this machine has to be one the best tones that I've ever heard. I play mainly through a Fender Blues Jr. and I am blown away by the beautiful tone that this thing produces. If you're on the fence, I say go ahead and give it a shot. Mayer and PRS did an outstanding job with this guitar.

Love it!

By Tim from Brighton, MI on April 25, 2022 Music Background: Lifetime guitar player.

I received my Silver Sky on April 20, 2022 after ordering it on Jan 14, 2022. It was worth the wait. The pickups are amazing and give me the strat tones that I have been waiting for. The clarity of chords is great. Just strum and open E and you will be set back. The string height was a little high and I had to adjust the saddles since the neck was straight. After that adjustment, it played great with no buzzing. The frets are dressed well and don't hang off the side of the neck. Also, you may want to dampen the strings at the headstock if you play it without an amp. But you will want an amp every time you play this.

Excellence

By Steve Brown from Syracuse, NY on April 21, 2022 Music Background: Engineer, Producer, Worship Leader

Paul Reed Smith never disappoints. This guitar is no different, the feel is great, very comfortable. Playability and setup is amazing, this guitar just makes you wanna play it every time you walk by it. I love it! The tone is great, and the build quality is what I expect of PRS, fantastic! Don't sleep on this modern Stratocaster.

I have a core Silver Sky, this one is better at half the price!

By Jay from AZ on April 2, 2022 Music Background: Guitars: Acoustic and Electric guitars (6 &12 strings), keyboard, pedal steel--I've tuned way too many strings! I am also an engineer (CSE)

I have been blown away by this guitar. The workmanship is just as good as American model. The pickups have a wider tonal range than the core and can sound more like a telecaster than a fender telecaster. The bridge pickup has more "bell" than the core. I like the neck-back finish which is not glossy like the core.

I had the tuners replaced with PRS locking tuners, which looks cool because they have the black top and chrome handles.
Even with those added, the cost was only $ more than half the cost of the core SSky.

I am not a neuro scientist, but a better guitar at half the price? Yes please!

Pro-grade guitar with looks to match!

By Brenden on March 10, 2022

I was one of the lucky ones that didn't have to wait for them to restock, and I have to say the SE Silver Sky is the most incredible "budget model" guitars I've ever played. If someone played one of these and told me it didn't play and sound like a $2,000 instrument, I'd call them a liar. One thing that really surprised me was the sustain! Every note rings like a bell. It almost reminds me of a piano in that sense. The neck is extremely comfortable to play, PRS' quality is always unmatched, and the pickups are amazing right off the bat! I'm a strat guy all day, but the Silver Sky is in a league of its own…

Amazing, amazing guitar!

By Sweetwater Customer on February 16, 2022

Amazing guitar! I just received this guitar yesterday - it was incredible! Could not ask for a better value guitar.

Tremolo stays in tune 100% Looks nice in this stone blue finish.

SE Silver Sky Exceeds Expectations

By Stella B. from California on January 15, 2022

I received my Stone Blue SE Silver Sky yesterday. I hope my initial impressions might help those of you on, or considering joining, the waiting list.

Background: On my good days, I'm an intermediate player. I have small hands and stiff, sometimes arthritic, fingers so I need an accommodating neck and a body that feels like a perfect dance partner or playing just isn't fun for me. I own two SEs (Custom 24-08 and Paul's Guitar) and love them, so I expected this SE Silver Sky to be of good quality and a good fit for me. My expectations were exceeded.

Fit and Finish: this guitar does not come off like the Core (USA) Silver Sky's 'lesser' little sister. The SE is beautifully crafted and feels fantastic to hold and play. I am especially delighted with the neck. Frets are dressed nicely, the rosewood fingerboard is beautiful and the best: a minimally finished back that is more satin than gloss so my hands glide with little effort. The shape of the neck is also a winner for me. I didn't expect to love the "plastic" tuning pegs (have them on Paul's Guitar and they're just OK) so I am surprised that I really like what's on the SE Silver Sky. Other's may feel differently and want to mod them out with something else.

Playability: this guitar makes me feel like the sky's the limit. What more could anyone ask of their guitar?

Tone: I play clean tones, and really like how this guitar sounds. There are lots of videos out now with sound demos; see what you think.

Negatives: So far the only thing I'm not happy about is that my (Boss) Waza Air headphone amp and WL-20 wireless (amp) transmitters do NOT fit into the guitar jack. The jack is designed such that it blocks the Boss transmitter from completely inserting. This has not been a problem with the two Fender Strats I have. The SE Silver Sky jack has had no problem accepting regular guitar cables or my (cheaper) Fender Mustang Micro Headphone Amp.

Positives: this guitar is GREAT value for the money, but more importantly it is a beautiful instrument that makes me want to play and play and play…

Finally, thanks to my SW rep, Mihir, for getting my SE Silver Sky to me quickly!

Solid construction, leveled frets and great intonation. Pickups has higher outputs than most Strats, but keeping clarity.

A quality instrument with tones for days

By Tom Aton from St. Johns, FL on November 25, 2022

After just a few days of ownership, here are my impressions:

The build quality is largely impeccable. I noticed a beveled corner on the bass side of the headstock near the nut, with no other corners beveled, which struck me as strange - but irrelevant to operation. The fret ends are well dressed, the frets are smooth, and the satin neck feels great in the hand. The finish is pretty good but not perfect on my instrument, but you have to look pretty hard to see imperfections. The tremolo bridge works very well, and the ability to secure the tremolo arm in the bridge with a set screw (rather than threaded in a la Fender) is a nice touch. The tremolo bridge comes from the factory with the trem block resting on the body per John Mayer's preference, so no pull-ups - but you can change that if you like.

The pickups, pots, switch and output jack are all high quality. The instrument sounds simply awesome, and the variety of tones seems almost limitless.

Since it's a poplar body, it's about a pound lighter than a Strat, but the balance feels excellent and the body is pretty resonant. The neck heel is more hand-friendly than a Strat at this price point, and the treble cutaway depth/shape gives better access to upper frets. It's also a 22-fret neck rather than a 21-fret Strat neck.

A couple of nits for me:

The gig bag is pretty flimsy IMO. I will probably invest in a hard case, although it's no surprise to get a gig bag at this price point - I just think it should be better.

The gray plastic truss rod cover and the gray plastic tuner buttons look chintzy. Yes, I know the core Silver Sky has gray plastic buttons - and I think they look awful on a $ instrument. The tuners work well and hold tune well, but they're butt-ugly.

All in all, this is a pro-quality instrument for serious musicians at an appealing price.

First single coil for me

By C$ from MA on January 21, 2022

I am intermediate bedroom guitarist at best, one time I almost played in a living room but Covid came and canceled all living room gigs. I am a fan of PRS, John Mayer, and the Grateful Dead. I have a SE Hollowbody II piezo and love that guitar. Since there are no issues with the HB II, I knew SE Silver Sky would be a quality instrument at a decent price. The guitar feels. plays, and sounds great but somehow I still don't sound like Jeff Beck or Jimmy Herring(my2 fave strat players). My rep Tyler was really helpful in ordering the guitar and having locking tuners and the trem floated. My only issue is I wish all guitars came with locking tuners, seems obvious by now. Aside from not making me sound like Jimmy Herring or Jeff Beck, I would totally reccomend this guitar dudes.

Another Signature Guitar is all Reminds me of the Eric Clapton Strat, Good But Not good. Mediocre if ya ask me, I expected more.

By Henry Martinez from OGDEN, UT on December 7, 2022

I think this guitar is worth the price of 8-900 tops. Nice Color, Neck was typical, reminded me of the quality of the eric clapton strat, made me think that its just a money making prop with John Mayer's name on it is all. Kind of a fluke thing imho. I did buy a s2 american made prs once, neck was worse than this, and no the neck is not chunky, thats nonsense. and the neck is not real wide, thats nonsense too. and No the consistency versus a strat is better in a Prs, thats nonsense too. I put this against my Made in Mexico Strat 2022, the Strat outperformed this Prs John Mayer Prs Foreign Made from indonsesia. most the time the indonesians make great guitars, better or just as good as the N Korean's. the knobs were crooked in this John Mayer prs strat. the Pickups were not bad good tone for the money, the mid pickup sucked as most single coil strats have. the Mexican Player series strat had not as good as finish as this Prs, and the Pickups were about the same. But I had already changed the pups to fat fifty's on the mexican player series fender strat, the Neck was the deciding factor and the tone for me. Fender outperformed this Prs strat on a foreign level. the neck was much better on the fender strat. and the tone better on those pups not by much though. for the money, its a good buy for a new beginner the neck is about a 6 1/2-7 on a scale of a 10. and the pups are about a 7 1/2 on a scale of 1-10 as well. finish is about a 8 for the PRS Signature John Mayer. The neck was rosewood... which i like the fuller deeper more full sound better for the music style i was using it for. I would buy again for the finish, and the neck would have to be better if on an American Made Prs, and the Knobs would have to be drilled and set in straight. that was pure nonsense. or bs. i did like it came with a typical prs soft case. hope that PRS one day will do something about that foam block in their soft case, like make it stay there. ha ha. I has the blue grey prs, my fender strat was black. and yes it was very consistent. in the price value range. hope this helps. I played both through a practice fender amp lt25. I suggest the grid spark amp for more tone and quality sound.

Very disappointed in this guitar. To start off with the nut fell off when adjusting the neck no hint of any glue. The freat job was hedeus, buss every where. Tried to adjust neck and string height was and is way off. The 2 stars are for the looks of the guitar. Would recommend a plex job and set up before buying..

SE Silver sky

By Tony Ramey from LA FAYETTE, GA on May 18, 2023 Music Background: 50 years of music and still loving it!!

Great job to my friends at Sweetwater as usual.
The silver sky that I received had a lot of problems,1. The neck looked OK. The freat work was par for the course at this price range. Bussing on the b string at the 13 freat and on the g string 13th freat. The nut fell off while taking the strings off to fix the freats, that surprised me! But I got it smooth out. The good part are the pickups awesome!!!
