PRS SE Silver Sky Electric Guitar - Piano Black with Rosewood Fingerboard Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Poplar Body, Maple Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, and 3 Single-coil Pickups - Piano Black

The original Silver Sky was designed in conjunction with John Mayer to elevate a familiar guitar aesthetic with PRS Guitars' world-renowned innovation. That collaboration is now making its way into the SE line with the goal of delivering a more affordable version of the Silver Sky — with all the same PRS quality! The SE Silver Sky features a lightweight poplar body loaded with a trio of 635JM “S” pickups to deliver all the glassy highs and round bottom end that you’d expect out of a classic three single-coil configuration. While the original Silver Sky kept the original 7.25-inch radius of its inspiration, the SE Silver Sky's maple/rosewood neck offers a slightly modernized 8.5-inch radius that feels vintage, but injects a dose of modern playability. Since its inception, PRS has been known to push the boundaries of guitar design. The Silver Sky SE combines that philosophy with a deep respect for tradition, resulting in a high-performance, vintage-style model of the highest caliber — but at a wallet-friendly price!

Trust John Mayer on this one...

By Corey Risner from Iowa on January 8, 2024 Music Background: Professional Bedroom Jammer

John Mayer is a man who is very particular about his tone. He knows the best because he has tried everything. This guitar reflects that. Every detail about this guitar is perfect. I am astonished of how well it plays outside of the box. Playing it is wonderous. I feel songs just write themselves with this guitar, with incredible tone and feel to back it up. I feel as though this guitar unlocked a player inside of me I wasn't aware of. It made me try new chords, try new sounds, and it just works so well with everything I throw at it. If you, in any way, shape, or form, are thinking about getting this guitar, do yourself a favor and buy it. You will not regret it.

The Classiest of the SE SS

By JDM from California on January 3, 2024

My favorite SS to date (besides this one) is the Onyx colorway from the original core line. This piano black SE might not have the sparkle that the Onyx core has, but the solid black — as well as the finish — on this is truly beautiful and classy. Not to mention it plays like a dream! I bought a demo version of this Silver Sky while the SE line was discounted for the holiday season at the end of 2023. I felt like I was robbing Sweetwater for the amount I paid! Long story short, it's an amazing guitar, and in my personal opinion, piano black on an "S" style guitar like this is a timeless look!

A truly nice guitar

By John from Detroit on January 2, 2024 Music Background: Singer / Songwriter - Soft Rock and Folk,

I play solo in coffee houses, Farmers Markets and open mics. These environments can be very rough on equipment, so my working gear is more budget than top of the line. I am very pleased with the PRS SE Silver Sky. It is well built, sounds great, somehow (the spooky bit) the neck just sits in my hand so comfortably considering I am one of those awful "Thumb Over" players. Playing through a clean channel, the pick ups sound mellow to my ears if you play with the tone "up" but yet have some good bite with the tone "down". The tone control on some of my budget guitars in the past are either on-ish or off, these pots actually work and provide a smooth transition which allows you to dial in the tone you want. Should be a reasonable assumption that it will also work well for the "Stomp Boxers" out there. Overall a very nice guitar that sits there and says Play Me. Thanks to my Sweetwater Associate Chris Finton who helped advise me when I was down the final two guitars to pick from. And Sweetwater for their 55 point inspection that takes the worry out of ordering on line.

Fantastic value!

By Brad Jeter from Georgia on December 22, 2023

I had tried a Silver Sky when they first came out and I really wasn't impressed, especially given the price. I had forgotten about them until I had a chance to play an SE Silver Sky and was very impressed--so much so that I ordered one from Sweetwater. I got the guitar (super fast ship--overnight actually) and it was very good out of the box. I spent about an hour setting it up the way I want it (polished the frets, string change, fine tuned the intonation and floated the trem). I am so happy with this instrument! Pickups sound great, fit and finish is wonderful.
I was instantly inspired. I made a short video less than two hours after receiving it.

Best bang for your buck!!

Let me begin this review by stating this was my second Silver Sky SE purchase from Sweetwater! I regretfully sold my first SS Stone Blue SE and wanted to get another one in Piano Black. When the guitar arrived, I noticed that it felt great, but lacked the signature clarity in the output of the 635 JM "s" pickups. I reached out to my sales engineer, Alex Berglund, and he worked some magic for me! I quickly received a replacement guitar! The playability and overall feel was better than the first and the sound was exactly what I was expecting!
If purchasing an instrument or gear online without seeing or feeling it is a struggle for you, let me encourage you to get a sales engineer that will work overtime to make sure you have a great experience at Sweetwater! I highly recommend Alex Berglund, and Sweetwater will continue to be my favorite gear retailer because of Alex's excellent customer service on this purchase!

Where the light is

Absolutely have fallen in love with my silver sky and the sounds that comes out of it. It did take some getting use to with its overall high output but once you can make the adjustments in finishing the right sound and setting in your amps or even through amp modulator. It sounds like a dream. The overall feeling of the guitar leaves me to never think how Im playing but rather just play.

Great Guitar & Great Experience

By Marc from Rutledge, GA on November 10, 2023 Music Background: Intermediate Guitar Player

I'm not really a strat guy, but I've been intrigued by the SE Silver Sky ever since they came out. I finally decided to roll the dice and I'm glad I did. I ordered a demo model on a Friday and it was delivered to me on Monday double boxed and packaged very well. It was in tune, intonated, and in perfect condition when it arrived. I literally pulled it out of the box and it was ready to play. The fit and finish are great, and the pickups are crystal clear. The overall quality of the guitar is second to none at this price point. I think if you really like Fender Strats you may not like the differences the Silver Sky guitar brings to the table, but, if you're like me, and just never enjoyed playing a Strat but really liked the overall Strat tone then I'd highly recommend giving the Silver Sky a try.

Just buy it, you won’t regret it.

I purchased this Silver Sky in piano black for my daughter to upgrade her entry level single coil guitar. I own and have allowed her to play my studio Strat which is an American professional model priced at over twice the cost of this silver sky.
After I received the order, I opened and inspected for potential shipping damage or anything that was off. It was in absolute pristine condition, big shout out to sweetwater for the stellar packaging around the guitar and it's gig bag.
I noodled on it for a few short minutes before restringing and treating the fretboard, as I do with any new guitar purchase, and I was blown away at the playability of this thing straight off the shelf. I had to forego my free plek service as it was a guitar month promotion through Sweetwater because I had made a hurried choice in this guitar needed delivery in a hasty timeline, and unfortunately the plek would have pushed delivery back considerably. That being said, I don't know how much improvement the plek could have made. Seriously one of the best off the shelf setups I've ever seen.
For the icing on the cake, my sales rep Cory sent along an additional box of accessories, strings, headstock tuner, strap, picks and a stand to compensate for missing out on the plek service at absolutely no charge to me. This is just one more reason I will always be a returning customer to Sweetwater.
Long story short, just purchase this guitar, at its price point, I don't think there is a better s type guitar on the market, and you already know Sweetwater is going to take care of you.

After much deliberation....

By Jimmy Dominy from Canton, GA on June 13, 2023

I finally pulled the trigger on this Silver Sky SE when the Piano Black option became available (personally not a fan of the 4 original release colors). I own and play many different guitars-PRS CORE, Fenders (custom shop, American, Mexican, Squiers),Gibsons, Epiphones, Gretsch, Danelectro, Partscasters..you name it. I am not picky or precious about where a guitar was made, how much it did or did not cost, nor what name is on the headstock...it's a tool for making music and if I am inspired by it and enjoy playing it, I'm all in! I have been intrigued by the Silver Sky as an interesting Strat variant since it's release in 2018 but my current post-Covid guitar budget did not warrant the steep price tag of the core SS, so the recent new colors released for the SE made my decision easier. I am NOT disappointed... The build quality of this instrument from the Indonesian Core-Tek factory is impeccable. All the positive reviews I have both read and YouTube'd are dead on...this is a great playing, great sounding and, yes, inspiring instrument. After a couple of personal set-up tweaks (I prefer a floating tremelo), I played two worship services at my church with this new addition and was beyond happy with it's performance. Can't wait to get it out to some of my trio gigs!
Special thanks to my Sales Engineer, Nate Hutson, for his patience and navigating several change orders, and for getting this sweet Silver Sky SE in my hands quickly...as always, Sweetwater makes online gear shopping a pleasure.

Not up to usual PRS SE quality.

By Parker Merkley from Moses Lake, WA on July 12, 2023 Music Background: Bedroom player

Let me say first that this guitar sounds great. The pickups sound wonderful, the bridge is great, the tuners are good, most of the guitar is fantastic. The majority of my guitars are PRS SE guitars, and they are all amazing for the price. I'm not sure if it's because I bought a demo model, but PRS/Sweetwater missed the mark with the neck on this unit. There was undisclosed scuffs that the pictures of the demo did not show. There are several high frets that cause buzzing on the treble strings no matter how high or low the action is. It also arrived with several frets having sharp ends and starting to sprout. It's a shame since most of the PRS SE guitars I have bought have all been exceptionally good quality for the price. But this one must've slipped through. I'm torn how to review it, because aside from the fret issues, the guitar sounds great. It's just a shame that it's going to need some money and work to get it to play up to the high standard of other PRS SE guitars I own.

Pickups are souless.

By JAMES PRESTON from Baltimore on September 14, 2023 Music Background: Playing in bands since 19642

Actually purchased two of these, believing the hype. The pickups are meh. Specifications are that all 3 pickups have the same output. It doesn't come close to stratocaster like tone. Save your money. Purchase a proper Fender Stratocaster.

Not the quality you would expect from PRS.

By Alex T. from Wilmington, MA on July 18, 2023

The guitar sounded great. Very "straty".
Setup was ok. Just had to adjust the intonation.
This is what was wrong:
* The output jack was loose and dirty
* The 5-way switch felt very flimsy. I got sent a replacement directly from PRS, which felt nice and solid.
* Small dent on the fretboard
* Dull finish area around the output jack
* Missing color coat on a small spot
* Pickguard not sitting flush on the body

I asked for an exchange. That went smoothly.
The new guitar had some loose tuning pegs, and heavy buzz on the low E-string. It also didn't sound as good as the first one. I returned it.

I really wanted to like this guitar, but the quality was poor.
