PRS SE Silver Sky Electric Guitar - Moon White with Rosewood Fingerboard Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Poplar Body, Maple Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, and 3 Single-coil Pickups - Moon White

The original Silver Sky was designed in conjunction with John Mayer to elevate a familiar guitar aesthetic with PRS Guitars' world-renowned innovation. That collaboration is now making its way into the SE line with the goal of delivering a more affordable version of the Silver Sky — with all the same PRS quality! The SE Silver Sky features a lightweight poplar body loaded with a trio of 635JM “S” pickups to deliver all the glassy highs and round bottom end that you’d expect out of a classic three single-coil configuration. While the original Silver Sky kept the original 7.25-inch radius of its inspiration, the SE Silver Sky's maple/rosewood neck offers a slightly modernized 8.5-inch radius that feels vintage, but injects a dose of modern playability. Since their inception, PRS has been known to push the boundaries of guitar design. The Silver Sky SE combines that philosophy with a deep respect for tradition, resulting in a high-performance, vintage-style model of the highest caliber — but at a wallet-friendly price!

My number one

By Norman Goldstein from Sebring fl on April 15, 2024 Music Background: Professional

Been more than a half year I purchased this guitar from Ray Gonzalez(great customer support) from Sweetwater. I gig 10-15 times pre month and this is my workhorse. Wonky pickup selector switch and no problem with the warranty as I was sent another. Great guitar and the band prefers when I play it. Paired with a quilter aviator cub us (which Ray also sold me) is pure bliss!!

Changed my mind about single coils!

By Aaron S. from Spokane, WA on March 22, 2024 Music Background: P&W, Alt Rock, Classic Rock

I've never been a Strat guy, or even single coils for that matter. But I got a chance to play one of these in a store and three things sold me on it - (1) For me, the Silver Sky is way more comfortable to play than a regular Strat. Something about the body size of the SS that sits better on me than a Fender. (2) The neck, my goodness that neck. It's slightly chunky and just perfect. I wish the necks on my other guitars felt this nice to play. (3) The pickups - I understand not everyone is a fan of them, but they sound a little sweeter/less harsh to me than regular Strats. Out of the box this thing plays beautifully. Fret ends are smooth as butter. Stays in tune extremely well so far. Side note - the moon white looks much much nicer in person than online, if you're unsure about this finish.

JUST GO FOR IT!

By MR.CPR from YORK,PA. on January 25, 2024 Music Background: RETIRED SEMI PRO, HOBBIEST

Just opened mine up today. It was very well packed and secure. This guitar really exceeded my expectations. Plays very well right out of the box. Spotless, and most important of all, it actually sounded as good as my G&L that cost twice the price. I ordered mine before their sale was over, but I put it off until the last hour of the sale, fearing the freezing weather's effect on shipping. No worries. It actually arrived still in tune! Don't wait until the price goes up again. Believe me, it will, as good as they are. Kudos to my salesman, Sean Geyer!

Very Happy

By RayRay from Phoenix, AZ on August 15, 2023

I was going from a Mexican Strat to this guitar. The Silver Sky SE far exceeds my expectations. The pickups sound amazing. The body carving makes it easier to play higher on the fretboard and the belly curve sits nicely. I would have been happy if I felt the guitar was better than my Mexican Strat but the PRS Silver Sky SE blows it away. I don't think a nice guitar makes you play better but it defiantly makes me play the guitar for a longer amount of time which makes me better. I enjoy the way the tremolo bar goes in and stays where its left, instead of drooping, like my Mexican Strat did until I wrapped the bar end with plumbers tape to stay in place. The color looks better in person. The tuning pegs feel like a luxury item compared to my Mexican Strat as well.

John Mayer and PRS did a great job creating this guitar.

Alex from Sweetwater was great to deal with.

Great guitar, worth every penny

By Tyler B on August 3, 2023

I've had a few weeks to play with my new SE Silver Sky and I absolutely love it. Pickups sound great, it stays in tune (I was surprised at how well due to the presence of the tremolo), and it is very comfortable to play. I have large hands but the radius feels just right to me, not overly flat like some other guitars I've played in this price range. My sales engineer Drew Foster took care of me, of course, and delivery was lightning fast and efficient. I don't have any complaints about this guitar and would highly recommend it. Sweetwater also gets five stars for their outstanding service, as always.

PRS SE Silver Sky

By Russell Cornes on June 6, 2023 Music Background: Rock Music, Classical And Blues

I played this guitar in my local store and I have to say it feels so wonderful to play. I never felt any finger fatigue because the radius and neck dimensions are so spot on. It was nice and light and when I played it without an amp I played a hefty E chord and put the guitar to my ear and the whole guitar rumbled beautifully. This is a little test I do before plugging it in to an amp. I give the sounds 10/10 and build 10/10.It really a pro feeling guitar without the big price tag.
I am now saving up to buy this guitar and I can't wait for that day to come.

Cream in my coffee!

By Leo from N.J. on February 3, 2023

You can't help but but love the Moon White color. It's like the Beach Boys are back and it's 1965. I am old and suck at playing guitar but I know great tone when I hear it! Lower the neck pickup. The lower you go the sweeter the tone. Mid p/u
1/3 higher than neck p/u. Bridge p/u Raise it until volume is as loud or louder than mid p/u. Now you have a good balance just using the 5 way switch. Neck is as smooth as can be. Fit and finish are perfect. I like the fretboard radius, it just feels natural. The pickups are 7.3K to 7.5K. Fret work can't be any better. If your looking for an addition to your collection don't pass this one up. It will only go up in value. Most basses and guitars I own are all modified in some way.
Bridges, saddles, pickups, light weight machines etc.. The only thing I will do to my Silver Sky SE is play it to the best of my ability. It comes in a decent gig bag. Paul Reed Smith and his designers visions, are searching for new ways to propel the evolution of guitar manufacturing and ground breaking pickup designs. PRS is on a never ending musical Quest. Now I own one small part of that quest.

PRS did an amaizng job with this one, grab one if you can!

By Nico on December 9, 2022

Earlier this year I had a very good deal on a Silver Sky Core, and went for it.

The Core is a fantastic intrument in every way, felt just as nice and high quality as the PRS McCarty 594 I had before.

I had a strat already and couldn't justify keeping both. Had a hard time choosing between both and just wanted to try the Silver Sky and flip it at the time, but liked it much more than expected.

Now in my country a retailer brought now some SE's just a couple of weeks ago, and then the went into discount on Black Friday and omg, just couldn't pass it up. Was always thinking that if the SE showed at a good price here would go for it, and it did!

Recieved it yesterday and was trying it last night.

The SE overall is a very good guitar. I think it punches above its price for sure.

However for me, it does not have that same premium feel and quality as the Core, although Core PRS are really perfect guitars, so it's a bit unfair in that aspect. But the SE is very good quality for sure. I can see no issues at all in the construction and tuners and knobs all feel very good quality, nothing feels cheap on the guitar. It even has a big metal block in the back, that normally lower price strat style have thin Zinc blocks.

The rosewood looks very nice, is not as premium as the Core PRS, or FCS or Gibson Custom shop I have, but is as nice as the USa Gibson and USa Fenders I've had, which is good.

I think the only aspect that for me feels a bit cheap, or not as good as the rest is the back of the neck, the feel of the Satin. Feels very good and smooth on the hand, no doubt, but it's not like the Satin on Suhrs, or even the USA Fenders, that is a very nice satin feel, that has a very thin coat. Here it feels more rough.
Maybe it's just preference and I'm being very nitpicky with this, but it's not that is feels bad, I like the satin, it's just not as refined as other satin guitars I've played, just that.

The weight on these are great, ine weighs around 7.4lb, and the neck size is a bit thinner than the core, but still fills my hand great, so liek it a lot. I plike chunkier necks.

The 8.5 radius I can notice a difference with the 7.25, and for me I prefer the 8.5. Feels more at home and similar to the 9.5 on the Fenders that I really like. O fender I always avoid 7.25, I look 9.5 radius always.
7.25 was not bad in any way, but in my preference the 8.5 it suits me better.

And what I think is the best aspect on the SE is the sound. It really sounds good. PRS did a great job on the pickups on the SE. Can't remember exacty the differences with the Core, maybe the Core was even more high fi and had even more clarity than the SE, but these are very good. I recently had a strat with Fender Fat50, and I liked them, but didn't love them, and seems I prefer the SE pickups a bit more than the Fat50. But will have to try them more.

This is probably the BEST guitar in the Price range. It sounds and plays FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!

By Steve from Rochester,NY on October 10, 2022 Music Background: 20 plus years of playing guitar

I bought the guitar when they were almost impossible to find and I wanted a blue one but Sweetwater was the only guitar outlet that had one and it was off white (which meant bright yellow). But despite the color the guitar fails to dissapoint. It plays like a dream with no set up right out of the box this guitar is a winner!!!. It does everything it says and so much more. Despite the color I was very pleasently surprised ay the incredible tones this guitar can play. So easy to play and sounds twice as good as it looks. You will not be dissapointed in any way by this guitar. light without losing sustain, Action was phenominal. Perfectly set up right out of the box, just a tuning and your good to go. I threw some 10-46 elixers on it and WOW what a beast of a guitar! I couldn't be happier. This guitar continues to grow on you and it is really hard to put down once you start playing it. To say I am delighted would be an understatement. I have been playing over 20 years and this was one of the best surprises of the year. I own some very nice electrics, a couple of reverends a Charger 290 a Jetstream 390. A PRS 'the Pauanother fantastic guitar that will amaze you A Taylor electric Acoustic and others but this is quickly becoming one of my favorites. If your on the fence, BUY IT!!! You will NOT be dissapointed.I don't have apicture of the PRS Silver Sky but I will throw in a picture of the "PAUL" guitar it too is a fantastic guitar and a joy to play it will not let you down. The Silver Sky and the "Paul" guitar are 2 that should be in ever guitar players collection enclosed is a picture of the 'Paul" guitar

Best buy for the money in the guitar market anywhere!!Got my moon white guitar from Sweetwater after searching all the major dealers (and the smaller ones too)

By Steve Giordano from Rochester, NY on September 26, 2022 Music Background: been playing over 20 years and there are very few guitars I haven't owned

I LOVE this guitar it does everything I wished my strat would do and so much more. I couldn't be happier or have found a better guitar at twice the price. Mason Moss helped me get the only one they had at the time and I am delighted with it. I own a variety of very good guitars and this rates right up there with guitar I have spent more than twice the price of this one that is why I feel it is one of the best guitars you will ever own. It plays so smooth and the sounds you get from ALL the pickups is amazing. I couldn't be happier. I own 2 Reverends, a Charger 290 and a Jetstream 390 and a PRS "the Paul" which. These are probably my 2 favorite in my collection of guitars including the Les Paul it is an amazing guitar in it's own right and a fantastic guitar for the money the humbuckers on The Paul are second to none but that's another review but it is also a guitar worth twice the price. I've sold off my Strats because they can't compete with the sound, feel or playability of my Silver Sky. I absolutely Love it and it's the first one I pick up in the morning to start my day. I can't recomend it highly enough and if your looking for an amazing guitar that is worth much more than the price pick yoyself up a Silver Sky you will NOT be dissapointed. You will be amazed at what you got for the money. Nothing in it's price range comes close.

I am glad I ordered it .... Short and sweet ....

Yes!

By Art from FL on August 2, 2022 Music Background: Yes

I have way too many guitars including 2 American strats, an Elite and a Standard. I just couldn't seem to find The One. I like the strats but there was just something missing. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't fall in love with the pickups or the neck. I have had this for a couple of months now and I absolutely love it. It's the only one I play anymore. The pickups are have even more clarity and sound fuller than the strats imo. And the erodynamics are just somehow more comfortable. The frets are also just as close to perfect, for me anyhow. I'd sell the strats but they're strats and no self respecting guitar collection can be without a strat or 2. But this will never be sold. I want to get the Core SS but this one is so good, why? At this price and quality level you cannot lose.

Holds its weight against the American strats!

By Ethan from New York on July 1, 2022

American pro 2 strat, player plus strat and mexi strat are what I have to compare this to… and let me see not one of them excites me as much as this one. Extremely smooth rolled frets, beautiful soft but bright pick ups and amazing QC.

Yes!

By Art from Stuart, FL on June 14, 2022 Music Background: Yes

I have two strats. An American Standard and an Elite. I like them both. Like Dottie! But I could never love them. The strat PUs make a very unique noise when the string is plucked. The best way I can describe it is "thu." It just never seemed to me to ring out clearly like it should especially on the wound strings. Anyway, the SE SS just rings true like I always imagined a strat should. Yes!!! Then there's the strat neck which I like. Like. But again, it always seemed I was working just a bit too hard, especially with bends. The neck seemed a bit long, but just a bit. The SE SS somehow pulls the forest fret closer to your body. Since the neck is said to be 25.5, I can only guess they shortened the body a bit. The thing just fits me so well. The neck is so easy to play. The whole setup is just so comfortable. Overall, the Silver Sky SE is the guitar I was always trying to imagine my strats were. I feel like I'm bad mouthing Jesus when I talk about strats this way. They're just somehow sacred. But the truth is, the last thing I thought I needed was yet another guitar (25+?), but I think this the SS SE may be "The One." It just feels so very right after a very long, very expensive search.

The BEST Guitar you can buy for the money and a true strat killer

By Steven from Rochester, NY on June 3, 2022 Music Background: Very experienced

This guitar is a strat killer. It sound is like nothing you'll ever get from a strat and one of the most comfortable guitars you'll ever play. It's a guitar lovers dream come true. Truly fantastic and for the money second to none!!!!

The best buy in a guitar you'll ever fiind!!

By Steve Giordano from Rochester, NY on June 3, 2022 Music Background: been playing over 25 years

I heard a lot about it and after watching many videos on different guitars this was a no brainer. It plays like a dream and sounds way better than you'll expect. In it's price range NOTHING comes close. This is a guitar that will never dissapoint. I could not be happier and due to it's scarcity I had ro settles for the off white (yellow) and I've come to love it. I have been playing over 225 years nad now I have MS (probably from getting sprayed with agent orange in Vietnam) But now it's about all I do and I feel so gifted to have some GREAT guitars, The PRS "the Paul" PRS "Siver sky" and 2 Reverends "with P-90s" Great guitars and I could not be happier with them. I must have gone through at least 40 guitars in all my playing days and I could not be happier with what I have and I can not recommend the Silver Sky highly enough. It in my opinion is the best 3 pick up guitar money can buy in it's price range. I could not be happier or ecommend it highly enough!!!!

Bought the Siver Sky Se in Moon White for my Son.I got to exam it and play it and all I can say is,Believe the Hype. The neck is absolutely perfect in feel and play.Pickups are the real deal with John Mayer's tone.Fit and Finish are impeccable. If you're on the fence about purchasing the JM Silver Sky SE it's time to get off the fence. My Sales Engineer,Jon Krempel came through for me yet again.Sweetwater and Jon Krempel are the BEST in the business.I've been dealing with both for years and if they say they they'll do something to help you, they do it.Highly Recommended.

Love my first PRS!

By Pedro Ibanez from Houston, TX on May 13, 2022

This is a great guitar... it sounds great in any pickup setting. I like that you are able to control the tone on the bridge pickup... you can't do that on a standard stratocaster. The look is outstanding as well. It appears smaller with the headstock being three-and-three and the body similar to a strat. I'm digging the "moon white" color too. It is unbelievable the value that is packed into this guitar.

Silver Sky Moon White

By Michael Renteria from Burbank, CA on May 11, 2022

I just wanna start by saying I I wasn't a fan of Mayer growing up, I knew of him but never stopped to listen to his music. So iv been looking for a strat with these specs for years, I tried custom shop strats, Nash and Danocasters and the felt wonderful but something was always off. I bought this one with out trying first. Let's just say it was a good choice. Straight out of the box it played really good, but once I added my strings and set it up how I like it, chefs kiss! I'm glad JM and PRS teamed up the guys have good taste. The one thing that surprised me was clay dot markers on the side! Also shout out to Matt LaMarch. He helped me choose this guitar and listened to my preferences.

Worth the Hype!

By Michael Hudson from Wendell, NC on April 28, 2022 Music Background: Intermediate Player of 35 yrs.

I'm not a big review writer but here are my facts. I have owned probably 4 Strat style guitars so far in my musical journey. And they have all been a labor of love as far as tweaking, and modifying, and tweaking some more.........

I'm also not a PRS Cult follower either. I do own a PRS Custom 24 SE that is probably my favorite guitar. But that is also after new saddles, adjustments, and Seymour Duncan Pickups.

This guitar........the best guitar I have ever pulled out of the box, tuned, and just started playing. I play through a Quilter Aviator Cub and this thing sounds amazing. John Mayer....no problem. SRV....no problem....I really am blow away for the money. A choice between this and a Fender Player? It's not even close. Just a great guitar that I think would inspire anyone to play beginner to advanced. My 2 Cents.

AMAZING

By Jakob from San Diego on February 27, 2022 Music Background: Working Professional

Blown away by this guitar. I've owned countless strats throughout my career and I can honestly say that the Silver Sky SE is an absolute gem of an instrument. Well crafted all around; fretboard and frets are beautiful and I was shocked that they were able to get such a nice piece of rosewood for the fretboard. Pickups are outstanding. EVERY pickup selection sounds amazing. Most strat snobs (like myself) will pretty much only use positions 1 2 and 4 but the bridge absolutely slays. Best S style guitar for under a grand, hands down. I think it can even hold its own against most standard USA fender strats.

I've played the USA core model silver skys and while I don't think the SE is 'just as good' the differences are microscopic. The USA model (in my opinion) has a slightly better neck that feels more premium but do yourself a favor and buy an SE! You will not regret it!

Excellent

By Chad from Lafayette, GA on February 11, 2022

Absolutely phenomenal guitar. Neck/frets are nicely finished, pots are smooth and even. Great sounding and playing instrument! Color is not as yellow as it looks online. Nice, faded vintage cream white. I prefer it to my 2021 MIM Fender Vintera Road Worn Strat. Props to Ian my engineer for help with the preorder!

Almost Perfect

By Sweetwater Customer on February 6, 2022

I received one of first arrivals and have spent a great deal of time with mine which is totally enjoyable, After owning so many Strats in my lifetime, I feel confident in offering an informed review of this instrument.I say instrument because this guitar makes music and responds to your personal expression better than any Strat I have ever owned. The pickups are full of tone and very balanced. You can play this guitar hard or soft with equally satisfying results. Too bad it takes PRS to build a proper Strat. I describe it as almost perfect because I did hAve to tweak the setup fairly intensely to get the action just right and I swapped out the bridge saddles to quiet down the noise the originals seem to produce. Intonation was challenging, but once achieved, it just started to sing. Chords are articulate and the neck is smooth for lead playing. I won't ever sound like John Mayer, but I finally own a Strat that I actually love and would not trade for anything. If you hAve struggled with Strats like I have, and you still want to own one, I think this is the one for you.

PRS Silver Sky SE

By Rich Saltz from North Carolina on January 23, 2022

I have played the guitar for a couple of hours and can give you my impressions and comparisons with the Core Silver Sky. The SE is a fantastic guitar, especially for the money. For less than one third the cost of the Core I would highly recommend it. There is a difference in the neck carve, neck finish and the radius. The SE has a slightly slimmer neck but not all that noticeable. The finish is satin where the Core model is gloss. I like both of them and I think over time I will probably like the SE better. The radius is slightly flatter on the SE and might be a bit more comfortable. The pickups aren't the same. I think the Core pickups are more articulate and to me seem hotter but all the reviews say the SE pickups are hotter. I might need to adjust the height of the pickups. The SE pickups do get you real close to the Core pickups. The guitar does sound great. A difference in the tuners where the Core has locking tuners and the SE has traditional tuners. A small difference that affects the price difference. Bottom line is the SE is a fantastic guitar...especially for the price. I would put it up against a Fender Player especially at the price point. You do get a gig bag where the Fender you get nothing but an added cost to purchase one. I think the PRS is overall a better guitar and measures up well against my American Professional 2. If you are looking for a Strat style guitar for a price point under $ I would go Silver Sky SE. They are going to be hard to find.

Almost Perfect

By nolan on April 21, 2023 Music Background: guitar nerd

I bought this model in evergreen about 6 months ago and I can't remember but I think I left it a 5 star review. overall for nine hundred bucks im not sure you can get a better guitar if your looking for a vintage Strat reissue. I believe the consensus is that this is suppose to compete with a player Strat and I must say I actually do prefer the maple board and pickups of the player Strat however this has better craftsmanship and setup out of the box. I think if PRS would make this exact guitar but with a maple board it would be an even bigger hit. Personally for me the maple board is just more playable and feels so much better for bends and vibrato than a rosewood board when it's glossed maple like on the player Strats. I also appreciate that the guitar comes setup essentially faux hard tailed. I personally use a Strat for anything blues and usually that means a lot of bends and vibrato and floating bridges at least for me I never feel like im in tune with that style of music. the decked bridge basically eliminates that. although its obviously fun to use the whammy bar and im not gonna lie I do miss that from time to time. anyhow the reason Im deducting 1 star is because of the finish. This is also a complaint I have of Fender as well... I hate poly finishes.. Why is gibson able to put out a USA made guitar with a nitro finish for a thousand bucks in some cases but every other company doesn't use them unless its historic reissues or custom shop.. Im not even sure PRS uses nitro period. Pauls always talks about wanting a super hard thin finish which doesn't make sense to me... the greatest vintage guitars of all time had thin soft nitro finishes... anyhow my point is that even it it made this guitar cost a couple hundred more I would gladly pay that to get a finish that will actually wear and become MY guitar over time not look like a toy forever.

A little disappointed - perhaps my expectations were too high.

By Brett on September 8, 2022

I own two PRS SE class guitars that were made in Indonesia that I bought from Sweetwater a few years ago. The quality of their craftsmanship was excellent. Both guitars are played daily and were and remain virtually flawless, even though they were very reasonably priced.

This guitar at nearly twice the price of those had several issues: minor fret sprout, a lot of fret buzz, and a poor fit at the neck/body pocket. The pickups also needed to be adjusted to match the volume levels between them.

Other than those issues, I'm reasonably happy with this guitar. I'm just not used to having to do setup work on guitars I buy from Sweetwater.

Once I eliminated the buzzing and adjusted the pickup heights, I was very happy with the tone/sustain/overall sound, and the intonation was good.

The neck has a smooth feel, fits my hand well, and is comfortable playing all day long.
The fret ends were well rounded despite sticking out a bit much, so I've left them as they were for now.

The body of the guitar is slightly lighter weight than my Fender Strats, but basically, this plays just like a Strat.

The tremolo has four springs, so it's held tightly against the body, even with #10 strings, so there isn't an option of increasing tension - only lessening. That is evidently by design, and it's fine with my playing style.

All in all, to me, this guitar is on a par with a low-end Mexican Strat, which is to say, not bad for the price.

Lazy Man's Strat

By Jay from Greenville on September 1, 2022 Music Background: aging buffoon

I was apprehensive about a signature model and more so about an imported one. I read good things about this instrument and wanted something Strat-like with a rosewood fingerboard and a tremolo. I can't compare it to a new import or American Strat, but I have a couple of US ones from the eighties. This thing takes a lot of the work out of getting classic Strat sounds. Basically, every configuration offers a classic sound and some ability to tweak it; these sounds take experimentation to get with an actual Strat! I suppose that this sort of truncates the spectrum, but the devoted bridge pick-up tone control offers some more unique options. It plays good. I think that the poplar is quite resonant and the neck, board and frets all feel good ... no complaints. I think that it could be a gigging workhorse or fun for a homeboy ... even one with a couple of Strats.

I got a really bad one

By Dino on August 23, 2023

I got a really bad one. My frets were very sharp. PRS always touts the SE line has very good side finished frets. Go watch the David Grissom SE video interview, they talk about it pretty extensively. The neck Didn't have too much relief it was flat out bowed. I Went to change the strings the nut fell off. They all can't be bad like this I think I received one that never passed QC at PRS China nor was inspected at SW. Really disappointed I received a Guitar in this condition.

Of course my Sales Person is killer and really except for the tech that did the so called 54 point inspection this was not SW fault at all. I hope the replacement is a good one.
