PRS SE Silver Sky Electric Guitar - Summit Purple with Maple Fingerboard Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Poplar Body, Maple Neck and Fingerboard, and 3 Single-coil Pickups - Summit Purple

The original Silver Sky was designed in conjunction with John Mayer to elevate a familiar guitar aesthetic with PRS Guitars' world-renowned innovation. That collaboration is now making its way into the SE line with the goal of delivering a more affordable version of the Silver Sky — with all the same PRS quality! The SE Silver Sky features a lightweight poplar body loaded with a trio of 635JM “S” pickups to deliver all the glassy highs and round bottom end that you’d expect out of a classic three single-coil configuration. While the original Silver Sky kept the original 7.25-inch radius of its inspiration, the SE Silver Sky's maple neck and fingerboard offers a slightly modernized 8.5-inch radius that feels vintage, but injects a dose of modern playability. Since its inception, PRS has been known to push the boundaries of guitar design. The Silver Sky SE combines that philosophy with a deep respect for tradition, resulting in a high-performance, vintage-style model of the highest caliber — but at a wallet-friendly price!

Silver Sky SE (PURPLE!)

By Joe from WV on November 13, 2023 Music Background: Semi-Professional, and the most OK-est Guitar/Ukulele Player in WV!

I've been a guitar player for over 40 years now. I have been playing PRS guitars for most of that time, but I have ALWAYS wanted to have and love an "S-Style" guitar, but those necks never feel right to me. I was looking at the Silver Sky SE, thinking that I like the PRS necks, so I knew I'd like this one, and I did. This guitar HAS the 3 single coil pups which give you that real good "S-Style" guitar sound, but with a neck that feels better to me. And of course, when they brought this guitar out in Summit Purple, I just had to have one. I LOVE Purple Guitars. I've played many different guitars over the years from different companies, and for the price, this PRS SS SE, is a good deal, it feels good, plays well, it's very versatile, and it looks great too. If you want to spend a couple grand on the Silver Sky.... if you can afford that, go for it. But for those of us who don't want to spend upwards of 3 grand on a guitar, the SS SE is a good deal. I'm very happy with my Silver Sky SE. OH....BUT... I would STRONGLY suggest that when you get yours, the FIRST thing you're gonna wanna do, is CHANGE THE STRINGS to your favorite brand. Once I did that, it made a big difference in the guitar. It just felt and played better once I put on my EB Slinky 10's. I'm hoping someday to get another PRS SS SE.

PRS makes great guitars… and the SE versions are well worth your time and $. The guitar is and A+

First a shout out to my Sales Rep Andy Rice… he is simply terrific, as is the crew at Sweetwater, with providing me with great guitars and great set-ups. They're perfect out of the box. The Silver Sky SE is a versatile guitar, it handles everything I throw at it, whether it's metal, blues, jazz or straight up classic Rock n' Roll. The fret work is on par with guitars twice as much and the neck plays super fast. The pickups are substantially articulate and really push the volume to my Fender Blues Jr. IV tube amp. The 5 way selector switch really offers you a wide range of tones and sonic qualities. The unique neck carve gives you great access to frets all the way up the fret board. It's not a Strat (which I love), but you can dial in Strat sounds plus it's own sound characteristics. The Strat and Silver Sky… I'm glad to have em' both on hand. You will too! Long live Sweetwater.

The best.

PRS is great and all but this is actually a perfect guitar and the maple neck ties it all together. Don't think about it, just get it.

Fantastic Guitar from Sweetwater and PRS!

By John Dunn from ROCHESTER, NY on June 27, 2023

The guitar is everything you would expect from PRS. The pickups really sing. Blues, Rock, Metal, Pop or Country… this guitar can do it all. I had a bone nut installed and a complete set-up. The luthiers at Sweetwater are fantastic. A big shout out to my Sales Rep Andy Rice. He's handled all of my purchases and is outstanding. Andy is my go to guy and a real asset when purchasing. I'm happy to have him at Sweetwater!

Summit Purple is absolutely stunning!!

By William Gilmore from Round Rock, TX on June 16, 2023

I got this SE Maple Board Silver Sky a half hour ago. Thanks for the help getting this one Ian Angle!
I have two other SE's Stone Blue and Evergreen. They all play excellent. This purple one is set up perfectly.
The maple board seems to have a little more Hendrix vibe to it, Pickups I can't tell any difference vs my two Core Model Silver Sky's. These are addictive to play and the 8.5 inch radius of the fretboard is awesome.
PRS has broken my desire to buy another Fender Strat for sure. (I have 3)

Purple Gold

By RKM from Florida on June 12, 2023

I own a silver sky with rosewood and wish it had a maple neck.
Went out of my comfort zone with the purple. It is beautiful and the feel of the SE with the maple is more my style. May be a little more Stratty than the US model. Very responsive at all pickup position. Prob will put on locking tuners.
Also, always appreciate the service and follow up from Jared at Sweetwater.

Not what I expected

This guitar plays well and the sound is good from her. That's about it for good. Come on PRS. I realize this is a SE but it's cheep tuners combined with how light it is make it feel like a toy. I have been play for 51 years and have had other PRS guitars and I am very disappointed in this model.

Very disappointed

By Sweetwater Customer on April 15, 2024

I have owned PRS guitars for years. All SE models because, for the price, they have been the best deal I could find as far as quality, playability, and sound for less than $. To say I am disappointed in this model is an understatement. The fret work was absolutely terrible. I had to clean up rough/sharp fret ends on EVERY fret on both sides of the fret board. Additionally, there were 3 high frets I had to level and crown, and all of the frets needed to be polished. There is also a small gap on both side of the neck in the neck pocket. I dont know if the necks are being made at a different factory and put on the guitar after the final quality check is done, but the maple neck models are a total miss for me - and Im not the only one that has issues. There are several youtube videos where buyers are pointing out the same issues with the maple neck models. I spent hours cleaning up the fret work on this guitar to get it playable - shame on you PRS. Do better.

So as not to completely leave a bummer review, the tones that you can get out of this guitar are amazing (which is why I put the time into the neck instead of getting a refund). I got the summit purple which is gorgeous. The guitar feels good in my hands and its very smooth to play (now that the frets are right). It is very different from a strat - but in a great way! Its not a strat copy for the sake of having a strat that is not Fender branded, it is it's own unique instrument, with its own unique feel and sound.

This review is also not a knock on Sweetwater. They are always superior to deal with and they didnt build the guitar. If you are interested in this guitar and have to have a maple board like I did, try to find a demo so at least you are not in it for $ and dealing with quality issues, or be prepared to do some work yourself or return it
